BR in the 1990s Falkland Railway Yard in Ayr between 1990 and 1993

  • Falkland Railway Yard lies just North of the town of Ayr in Scotland and was another one of my regular haunts in the early 1990's in order to capture as much of the class 26 locomotives, as they were often stabled in the depot there. I have put together a 30 minute compilation of trains that I captured on film between May 1990 and September 1993. Mainly filmed from the footbridge on Newton-on-Ayr station or from the road at the far North of Falkland Yard opposite "Falkland Junction" always exposed to the coastal winds, Classes I encountered were the typical 08 diesel shunter responsible for marshalling the yard and many class 37 hauled trains to the various industrial locations scattered around the area. The occasional class 20 either working in pairs or with a class 37!!. were also witnessed.The classes 47 and 56 also made an occasional visit. Most trains of the "MGR" type heading round the sharp curve towards Ayr Harbour were hauled by classes 37 or 20. The passenger services were predominantly EMU Class 318's in "Strathclyde" livery working between Glasgow Central and Ayr, with "Sprinter" DMU's running through to Stranraer. The London to Stranraer sleeper service which I used once was still running in 1990 and was class 47/4 hauled as from Glasgow Central. I Hope you enjoy the nostalgia from that period, and the video evokes fond memories to those of us who were there to witness it, and indeed enjoyment to those that did not.

    Mark, thanks for posting this excellent video, it's a great reminder of the one and only time I visited both the Depot and Falkland sidings at Ayr in 1987 whilst doing a 7 day all line rover, it was amazing to see so many 26/27s on both the depot and in the sidings, I believe some of the photo's I took at the time are somewhere on my channel, thanks for the memories, it's a like, keep them coming, great stuff, cheers...Bill

I missed the class 27's by literally days when I started to focus on Scotland, much the pity, but in my early days on the Railway I worked on many of the class as I was based in Perth then.........Many thanks Bill........Mark

    Excellent video I really enjoyed this, brings back a lot of memories. It's a salmon that's on the side of the 08, that indicates it was based at Motherwell.

    Thoroughly enjoyable film! Used to pass through Ayr a lot in the mid-80's, bashing 37s on the Stranraer boat trains, and sometimes the Euston-Stranraer overnight when it had a class 20 as a pilot from Ayr. Glimpsed memories of Falkland Yard, usually when half asleep on the run back to Glasgow in the morning! One note- that's a (much more local) Polmadie / Shields Road 'leaping salmon' on the 08, not a Thornaby 'kingfisher'. All the best, Jon

      I visited the yard 6 months ago and it is still there but did not see any trains. The depot round to the south is there but as far as I could see was just an EMU stabling point....Best regards to you and a very happy new year....Mark

    Pretty sure I cabbed that 08 on a primary school visit to Ayr harbour around about this period. Unfortunately this was long before I had a camera of my own, and I did not think to take a note of the number.

      Many thanks for the comment and viewing, Yes there are many occasions when I wished I had made a recording of railway events that I witnessed as a youngster, such as noting down the numbers of loco's back in the late 60's and early 70's I traveled behind, such a pity as you can never gain that lost information. I only remember seeing one 08 at Falkland yard at any one time, but whether they periodically exchanged it with another one I do not know, my best regards to you....Mark

    A great video, many thanks. I can see that the MGR trains are being exchanged in those curved sidings, but were were they running from and to? and why did they have to go through this seemingly complex and expensive maneuver in the first place?

To answer your questions I need to go back and have a look at my records, but as far as I know the trains that rounded the curve by the depot exit came from Killock quarry and some came from the SW via the same freight only line. I will explore this more and get back to you shortly....best regards for now....Mark

      After a look at some records from that era, there was a lot of MGR traffic from Point of Ayr colliery to Fiddlers Ferry in the south also to Hunterston. The place at Killoch was a washery and as far as I can recall the reason for such a fiddly manouvre at Falkland was due to no direct connection from the branch to the mainline South. Maybe a local person will know much more about the set up than me and correct me on my knowledge so far. I must revisit the yard again soon....many thanks .....Mark

      Korschtal I think some of them will have come loaded from Killoch washery and been discharged into a ship in the harbour. (The curved siding leads to the harbour where there was a conveyor system for loading ships. You can see the trains are going in loaded and coming out empty.) A fair bit of coal was being exported through Ayr Harbour at the time.

    I'm sure someone has already said, but the emblems are Westie (West Highland Terrier) dogs. Although this is my own view I think the reference was for the West Highland Line that many of the locos served

      spompeytransportvideo ok thanks. There's not been any trains brought down the harbour for years. I assume it was loaded on to waiting cargo ships and exported like you say..
