  • Magload founder Conners takes a look a the Australian made Lithgow Arms LA101 22lr bolt action rifle. Priced at c.£1000 it's in the top end of kit available on the market, is it worth extra? Lithgow think so and we'd be inclined to agree!

Thanks for reviewing some Aussie gear :) we might be upside down but we do occasionally make some great firearms gear. They're a hugely very rimfire rifle over here.
A few Aussie manufacturers are making more aftermarket gear for the La101s to make it even better!

Ya, that failure to fire is definitely not the lithgow's fault. The spring in the striker is more than ample and the bolt is absolutely precisely machined. This is an Heirloom quality rifle hands down, I have the WMR version and if I had to criticize anything, it would be that it's better suited for medium to small frame person. That's not really a fault, it's just what it is. Extremely wieldy, but what heft it does have from the excellent barrel and such. gives a rock solid stable accurate shot. Bore is gorgeous and the laminate stock that I have, I think is sexy as hell. The two scope mounts are not machined in, they are fastened, which means you can slightly adjust them, which in my case was necessary. My suggestion, would be to not ignore this, put a dot on a wall or if outside your options obviously increase, line your gun bore up with that by taking the bolt out, visually bore sighting the gun, Easiest with a bipod and stacking a book or two under the butt pad and then mount your scope with the windage and elevation neutral by counting the clicks, center it out. your crosshairs should be damn near on target with what you can see through the bore, if not, correct the scope mounts, obviously this is for windage, elevation cannot be adjusted but that isn't what we are worried about. You can use a small level to level the gun with the flat spot that the scope mount rests atop the barrel once removed, get the gun set right then reinstall the mount back on, making sure its level to the already leveled gun. Even if you get the one piece rail, you could potentially have a cant if not done this way. My first attempt before figuring this out had me completely out of windage adjustment and still not on target, after bore sighting it, I didn't even use a laser, no need, I was literally 2 clicks off of the 25, yard zero I wanted, done benched at the range. Now you have all the scope adjustment you will ever need, and your scope will be atop the gun level and not slightly canted which will only at best give you one true zero. And by scope mount, I'm talking about the little weaver rails not the scope rings. Just my 2 cents.

In Australia we feed our Lithgows with Winchester subsonic hollow points, and CCI stingers!
Grew up shooting a 50s Lithgow still very accurate after much use

I've got two of these guns - one in 17HMR black polymer, and one in 22WMR titanium polymer. Excellent guns, great build and finish quality, good accuracy. You can usually get them for below £900 (polymer at least). The biggest problem with Lighgow (in the UK) is the distributor (Highland Outdoors) are a nightmare to deal with. I wish Lithgow would find someone else to represent them who would do the brand justice...

We deal with Highland on a regular basis and have never had any issues! In fact, we reckon they are one of the best wholesalers/distributers in the UK, certainly in the top 3 for sure.
For the record, we have no financial relationship with them as Gunroom.tv and they don't pay us for reviews, but they did supply the rifle in this video for review.

@@Gunroomtv I've never had a problem with stuff they stock (slim pickings) but everytime they have to order stuff in (most of the time) they screw it up. My last order for a Lithgow rifle and some accessories took over 18 months, and what I received was an ex-demo rifle without accessories, no box, no paperwork, and they didn't even offer my RFD a discount for it. Take it or leave it. Its just not good enough...

They are around the £1200 mark depending on spec:

A good review, but lose the music I like to hear the shot ring out and the bolt action noise.
Also just a thought why did you get up every time to use the bolt? Your hand,It is near your trigger just lift your hand and cycle the bolt.
    An Aussie Point Of View.

Take your point about the music, but some like it and you can't please everyone all of the time! The up and down when shooting is a funny one, basically we forgot the range stool so Conners is actually standing for each shot and it was a really awkward position!
