I gotta say, when I first got into solo board gaming about a year ago, I watched this list and was like "What? Hoplomachus? pshhh" I went out and bought Mage Knight and several other games in your top 20. Only because NO ONE else had this game in their top solo lists. Now, I finally broke down and bought Hoplo Origins and I gotta say. I'm sorry I didn't believe you. Truly the best solo game I own now and I will be getting the big box games very soon. I say this being the proud owner of Too Many Bones as well. Hoplo is simply amazing. Sorry I didn't trust in Ricky haha. Thanks man!
:D EXCELLENT CHOICE! Sometimes the popular choice is not necessarily the best! but sometimes it is.. so MK is still awesome :) But You know, I've found some other real beauties in the last 12 months... Too Many Bones is a great addition for one, and a whole heap of other solo games. But throughout, Hoplo is still my number 1 !
Wow, Mage Knight went to #2. I love Mage Knight, but you definitely have to be in the right mood to play it and have plenty of time. It is so rewarding, but can be exhausting afterward. I compare it to another hobby of mine, hiking 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado. The experience is great and when you make it to the top it is such an accomplishment, but you have to plan for the trip, prepare to travel, take the right gear and also make the physical commitment to making it to the top. It is so great, but nothing you do on a whim. Mage Knight is like that for me. I have to mentally prepare. :) Great list and thank you for your videos. Legendary Encounters and Lord of the Rings have been on my "maybe" list for some time. I'll need to check out your #1 as well.
Great analogy :) I find it pretty fair going now I've had lots of practice (!) Not as challenging to set up and play as some others on this list, but it sure is a challenge with the difficulty ramped up!

5- Star Realms / Darkest Night 4- Apex Theropod (2nd ed) 3- Legendary Encounters 2- Dawn of the Zeds (3rd ed) 1- Kingdom Death: Monster I also own Lord of the Rings LCG, Robinson Crusoe and Mage Knight but find them way too cold and don't have that fun playing them (while I admit they are solid solo games). I only own something like 30 solo games and the three of these above are among the 5 last items in my top 30. And Hoplomachus seems fun but it's unavailable in this part of the world. Ordering it from the USA would cost me too much in shipping fees.

Ricky, love your 'Play-through' series', and 3 of this Top 20 are definitely going to be in this year's Christmas-present stack, assuming I can persuade Adam @ Chip Theory Games to ensure that 2-3 weeks delivery really does mean that! I've come to Gaming late, so it's a little like discovering an author with a serious body of work behind them - so many things to catch up on, with so little time, outside of work, to squeeze some gaming in. Having said that, yourself, Rahdo, Yer man @ Game Fondue and "obviously" the Boys @ The Dice Tower have persuaded me that there's a space on TH-cam for another Game channel - New Year's beckoning, along with hopefully some Vids, with enough of a USP to fit in a gap or two!! Have you tried Forge War? I was really quite pleased with how good it is solo - I probably enjoy Mage Knight more, but this is quicker, simpler and easier to get to the table. I definitely enjoy it more than Robinson Crusoe.

I don't know exactly where but in my solo list I would have also Viticulture Nations and Forge Wars. I have been ignoring Historia and Hoplomacus just because the appeareance, time to give then a look. My top is LOTR LCG, I play it 10 times more than any other
Great info. It interesting to see how your interest in history seems to affect your game choices. I watched your Mage Knight play through and was surprised at how quickly and seemingly easily you won it. Now that it is in re-print I am tempted. Just got LOTR for Christmas and only played it 4 times. Lost horribly to Treachery cards and Hummerhorns, etc. LOTR is incredibly easy to setup and play. I was so surprised that many people said that it was complicated. Anyway, first year buying boaord games and I find myself liking Pathfinder for its D&D feel, Legendary for how nice the setup works, how random you can make your decks, and how easy it is to play. I only have Marvel Legendary, not Encounters. The Encounters theme might be too grim for my household with a pre-teen. So, 3 years later and how is Scythe? What about the other big ones like Gloomhaven, Terraforming Mars and 7th Continent? Is Mage Knight still in the top 10?
Scythe is great for sure, and Terraforming Mars. I'm only just getting into those two. 7th continent kind of faded for me, and Gloomhaven I was never drawn to. As for Mage Knight? Still top 10 !!
Interesting to see not a mention of the Fantasy Flight Games "Warhammer quest Adventure Card Game". Have you tried it yet? It feels like LoTR-light game, with a decent campaign feeling. Highly recommended for the soloist.

I'd like to grab one of the big boxes, and can only afford to get one at this time. I know in the distant pass, you've unequivocally recommended getting The Lost Cities over RoR. Now that you've had more play time, and gotten to play the Titans, is that still your recommendation for the solo gamer? I'm looking for the best solo experience, and while I hope to get both games someday, if I don't, it seems like the Titan battles might be more fun than the TLC solo options. has you viewpoint on this changed, or would you still say TLC is the clear cut first buy?
Great question Ben. It is certainly a tough one to answer. If you think you might buy more in the future, then TLC is the best place to start for sure, with the solo bundle added as an extra. RoR is beautiful too, so if you are looking for just one set, with the most challenge and variability, maybe RoR is the one to go for. It will be a very personal decision, but for me, I would have to start with TLC.

Sam Healey wasn't a massive fan. Also, this is a new video upload and Origins is nowhere to be bought in the UK. For a game (the Origins version) that comes in from nowhere to number 1, I find your choice bit odd.
It was #4 last time, so it has only climbed 3 places rather than out of nowhere - but yes, the addition of Rise of Rome, the new solo bundle for TLC, plus Beast and Master, as well as the solo trials of Origins all ejected its position a few places. I've not seen Sam's review, but I'm sure we have differing tastes. Meanwhile, the publishers have not established a distribution model yet, so you can only buy it via chiptheorygames.com right now, and yes they do ship to the UK ... Happy days!!

Tough question ... of course Renegadevis the best , though not strictly just a deckbuilder. Pure deck building : probably Legendary: Alien. Mage Knight and Descent are still holding out strongly in my collection!

Also, have you heard about the card system called Decktet ( boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37301/decktet )? It allows playing some cool solo games too.
