I forgot all about Consulting Detective. I've probably had it long enough that I might not remember a single detail. About time to bring it out again. Thanks!
Nice list, Rick. I have played them all except Gears of War, which I own and really should get to the table. I look forward to seeing more of your picks!
Well, if that is your 15 to 11 then I'm really looking forward to your top 10. I'm almost certain I know what your number one is. It involves numberless dice, a hand of cards, and an emerging map, right? Almost all of these I love to play with others, and solo. Great show (as is the usual from you).
Awesome stuff! Would you do a play-through of Ghost stories, my gaming group we want to play but the curve of the rules has kept us from playing it and the only walk-through/play-throughs are really bad quality and would be awesome of you could do it for us ^^. Merry Christmas!
ah man, Arkham Horror should of been number 1, lol I love that game to death. But you're right though, it is more fun to play with a group of people than by yourself.
If anyone finds the Sherlock Holmes game for sale, please share the link. Can't find a copy anywhere. Everything on eBay looks like very old versions and/or PC game versions.
Ricky Royal Guess I should have clarified that I'm a Yank. Technically I'm a Texan which makes the most superior type of Yank but either way shipping costs across the pond for a board game is probably cost prohibitive :)
I think this is a long conversation, there is a ton of pros and cons. Yet I think in the long run the streamlined rules of EH, what with its built in reminders so your not forgetting triggers and of course it is in active development with tons of expansions expected to soon increase the complexity, variety and add in some of the cool stuff from AH we miss... well I think EH will be very popular in the future. Also the theme is protected from dilution so all that should mean the expansions can stack and stack and be extremely complex with out making the game cumbersome to play. EH has a ton of potential, as yet not fulfilled some would say. Still I think AH will for a long time to come have a devoted fan base of people that consider themselves to be playing a "pure" game... and the truth is no matter how good the remake is we all respect the original... yet the TRUE original is nearly forgotten.. So yeah , it s a big call. All I can say for sure is that I do not see either being unpopular for years, at this exact time of writing I think I still prefer AH. EH somehow seams tamer. Like I'm 5 turns in on my play though not a single doom track movement, always getting to roll a single die on a skill test even if the modifier brings you to zero, have chainable and stackable items rather than hand limits... and more... I dunno.. there is no doubt EH is better designed, it fixes so much... .. but I haven't experienced the tense dread and feeling of over whelming odds just piling up and up and up leading to that super satisfying win that AH produces. ... .yeah.. I... I am just not sure were I stand yet.. All I know is I still love AH. Time will tell.
that sounds like they are not as much alike as people are saying (for what it's worth, I see them as very different games at the moment). I guess the question should be, for the theme, and for solitaire, which do we think would hit the table most often .... (?)
I think they are different games. Well, really they have different design philosophies which leads the same "idea" into different game experiences. Yet they are for all intense and purposes the same "game". I think EH is designed to be more assessable, user friendly so to speak. One of the big surprising things about AH is that it was, imo designed as a bridge between the RPG players and the board game players. So it was intentionally complex to try and capture the massive amount of things a RPG entails. Yet, a strange thing happened somehow this beast of a game because practically a gateway game to the hobby. A game of this weight and length with so many moving parts seams to have such appeal to "non-gamers" and digital gamers alike. Now.. EH is designed for THOSE people. It is designed for ease of play, simplified rules and a lighter experience of the same theme, that will allow it to be digestible as a slightly more casual game. Two different philosophies of the game design and this is why it seams to most experienced gamers i have spoken with that these games have a very different feel to each other. As for solo? Well, I think EH might have more legs for me as a solo game in the long run. When playing solo with out someone to catch you up on something it is very easy to just play a rule wrong for years (heh I know this for a fact!). EH's self checking systems in the game design should make solo much more manageable, allowing players to run 6 investigators even. Not tracking money, doing skill adjustments every turn, worrying about 1st player makers etc etc. Not to mention those prompts in the event cards to drive all the game systems with out you having to "remember to do it".. not need to hold everything in your head at once.... Plus I am excited as to where EH will go, I hope the expansions will really take advantage of this prompting system to introduce much more complex and game changing expansions than AH ever could have. When I have a board game night with 5 mates and we want a tense struggle game that will be talked about for years... I think I will be reaching for a list with AH on it. As I said before, as of yet EH has not captured the tense every growing impossible odds of doom that stack up so fast you feel you have lost the game in turn 1 and just hang on by your nails for the entire time. Throwing dice in those conditions with 5 people cheering or cursing as they land is awesome.
if only they put action figures of investigator and monsters thats my only complain on arkham horror i rofl when i saw eldritch horror what a half arse arkham clone
Super cool!!! Thank you for your time and effort in bringing solo games in a simplified way. Many thanks.
Maurice
Pleasure!!
I forgot all about Consulting Detective. I've probably had it long enough that I might not remember a single detail. About time to bring it out again. Thanks!
I'm like that with movies....
Can't wait for the rest. I mostly play solo and your videos, specially this top 30 series, are incredibly helpful. Thanks!
Fantastic job, and I mean it. You're an inspiration. Clear voice, smart words, enormous knowledge of the gaming universe. Instant subscribing.
+Etrigane thank you !

Nice review. Can't wait for Part 3 - x.
Thanks for doing these Rick ;0) never new about Sherlock so may even check it out along with Gears.
Thanks Ricky, any chance you can post a list of the games in the description of each video?
Oh no ! I didn't want to spoil the surprise :) Maybe I'll create a list on BGG... :)
Ghost stories is still one of my favorite games to lose:) Great list.
Great list! Thanks for sharing.
PART 3 : aiming for Dec 24th....

Just a minor point on pronounciation of the Cantonese word 'Tao', the 'T' should be pronounced like a 'D', so Tao becomes Dow.
Also,Qi is pronounced 'Key' not 'Chee'. The spelling Chi can go either way, but genrally 'Key' is preffered.
ah man, Arkham Horror should of been number 1, lol
I love that game to death. But you're right though, it is more fun to play with a group of people than by yourself.
Any idea if the Sherlock Holmes game is significantly different than the Sleuth Games version from 1981? Looks like the same game, just reprinted.
I understand it is the same game, yes.

I got mine from Angry Imp Games

Number 1 has to be Mage Knight, right? :)
Did you get it right ????
Of course :) Happy New Year Rick!
I think we all know Mage Knight is going to be in the top one...
Yup. Has to be.
ohhhh... big call, saying EH is probably going to be more popular than AH! Time will tell :)
What are your thoughts so far Tragic ?
