In regards to sushi I believe some of them directly add rice wine, so it's very important to check. There was chicken noodles where they added rice wine to the sauce and I had to return it back.

If you go to a store and they show you a certificate and the organization is a trustworthy one and they appear in the list of halal food on that organization's website, then as a muslim you can trust it far more than going to a place and asking the waiter whether the steak is halal and you take the first answer they give without looking into it any further. If a person is muslim and they accept "halal" food that wasn't halal at all, how could/would they be able to justify it to god in the afterlife? Just shrug shoulders and say that Robert the fry-cook seemed like a trustworthy fella?

Vanilla extract almost always has alcohol but its a small quantity and if you can't eat that, you should eat any desserts pretty much in the west at that point. Muslim diet isnt so complicated
