Owned the Wilson D9 for around 4 months now and shooting my best rounds and more consistently. My bad shots are still half decent and really happy overall. Plus the price saving and distance gains are unmatched.
The APEX DCB was the runner up at my fitting. I chose the Taylormade P790 (2021) based on the fact that I had a 160 yard carry with a 7i. I am a 62 year old mid handicapper. My 7i club head speed that day was a measly 70 mph. That tells me the technology was compensating for my age. At my fitting I did discover I needed a 2 degree up lie, I never knew that so please promote getting fit for your set. Thanks for the info!
Great choices the DCB wasn't out when I bought new this year, I went in to get the Mizuno's, I tried the forged and the hot metal, the sim2 a calloway and a few (many) others. I liked the look sound, fee and forgiveness of the PING 425s more than the 921s and I was gutted as I wanted them shiny shiney Mizunos. The 425s have help dropped me from 26 to 18 in 4 months and I can't recommend them enough.
Appreciate you covering all the actual price points high handicappers and beginners would look at. So many drawn to Wilson down to the price being almost half their rivals in some cases. Great vid as always man. 👍
I had a fitting last month for my first proper iron set and was deciding between the Titelist T300 and the Apex DCB. Went in thinking I was going to get the DCBs but actually got the T300s in the end as I just felt a little bit more confident with them.
I'm so glad I watched this video, as I just purchased a set of Apex DCB irons (before watching this)! I'm a 10 handicap and I'm right about on the line between the APEX irons and the APEX DCB irons. However, I'm 64 years old, and over the next 10 years I'll probably need more of the forgiveness in the DCB irons as time goes by. I think more players out there should be more humble and accept the more forgiving irons! I'm not looking to shape the ball that much--I'll take a dead straight shot everytime!
I just got the 921's and man, do they sound awesome when you hit them. I am also hitting greens I never reached before. So yes, while in the end I just want something to help me play better golf, looking good doing it is a nice bonus.
been playing the PXG 0211 irons this season, have done wonders for my game. tried several of these clubs before PXG, and PXG were hands down my favorite. I know they're not for everyone, but definitely worth a try.
Got a fitting for them in November and quite excited! The 0211 driver and irons cost the same as just a set of irons in any other decent brand. Crazy! My one concern with them is the lofts. They’re so strong that there’s going to be a 30-yard gap between the PW and my first wedge!!!
My list as a 16 handicap... 1. Callaway DCB - only forged game improvement iron out there! 2. Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal - best all arounder. 3. Ping G425 - basically same playability/looks as the 921 above, but with a less enjoyable feel/sound. 4. Titleist T300 - highly overlooked GI iron with excellent performance, but a tad on the bulky side. 5. PXG 0211 - best budget option. Doesn't feel as refined as the ones above, but a quality iron with a good feel/sound and best bang for buck option.
I’ve tested all these except D9, but new T300 was best for me, followed by 921HM (11 hcap but slow swing speed). Haven’t tested Srixon or Halo yet but recent TXG test has me intrigued. My x16s are due to be replaced soon. Wallasey looks very nice.
i was hoping the srixon zx5s would make your list, visually they are awesome, forged and feel just as good or better then the mizuno or callaway. i took a chance on them this yr, and I'm so glad I did, love these irons!
Totally agree, I couldn't have been more surprised after I checked out the zx5 iron's as the guy doing my fitting said try this iron. To say I was blown away I've played mizuno irons for ever these zx5 just felt unreal. Unfortunately they took 4 month's to arrive they are a gamechanger in the bag!
The "smaller" brands seem to make unreal clubs right now. I went to get fit for a new set of irons and was dead set on Titleist or Ping, but in the end i had to decide between the wilson D7 forged and the mizunos. My god they both felt incredible.
As a golfer that fits squarely into this game improvement category the only important factor is how well I hit it. It could sound like a cowbell, look like a pool noodle and feel like a 2x4 and I couldn't care less as long as I can hit it well and get my handicap down.
Went to a club fitter to see if I could find a better game improvement bag of clubs, what I found out was my Ping G410 needed new shafts in my clubs as the fitter says with all my data that there was nothing he could improve for me with a new head, and this was the same for the rest of my bag, got new shafts in the irons and he improved my hybrids with the same shaft and these were the Callaway B21 and two new wedges with the same shaft as the irons the CBX2 from Cleveland. So get fitted and take the guessing away and get fitted and not waste time figuring out what works best for your game and swing. Love your videos and where you play and test these out,
Tried all of these and decided on the Muzino JP 921 hot metal. Waiting for them to arrive now. Sound feel and looks were best for me by far. I hit the Cleveland turbo launchers VERY well but could just not get past the looks. Having said that my 80 year old brother in law has a set and beats my brains in with them. He shoots his age on a regular basis.
Great review Andy and all great irons. I’m still testing between T400, DCB, Sim max2O/S, , G425 and Mizuno JPX921 Hot metal. I’m also going to look at 790. All great irons and lucky that we have all these brands to try. Price might have to play a part as a senior which would favour Radspeed, Hotmetal And G425. I agree the DCB look great and forged for the high handicapper a game changer.
Hi. Im having slight problem picking some new irons...I was a good 12 handicap (when not in a competition my playing friends wouldn't give me more that 8/9 shots) when I was playing regular upto around 4-5 years ago. After covid I now want to get a new set ready for a new start next spring..I've been told I need a mid to high handicap forgiving irons..money not a mayor issue just want to get the right set to help me enjoy and improve my game in the future. Look forward to any comments Stewart
The Cleveland HB Launchers and Turbo version for the last few yrs have undoubtedly been the most forgiving irons…..there’s simply no contest! They can’t compete on the catwalk though 😉
The newer XL version is possibly slightly more attractive; a bit like a plain girl with great makeup. Sim 2 Max is fugly. if I was starting again and wanted to improve as fast as I could, a second hand set of Clevelands would be my choice. The score card does not record the aesthetics of your irons. In summary, if I can hit the ball where I want to go,with high launch and not too high in the air and with good spin to keep it in the air, I don't care about sound and looks.
As a super senior It would have been nice to see a comparison of the distances on these irons. I know they are different lofts but to me that doesn't matter a 7 iron against a 7 iron as long as the launch is similar.
Great vid, I'm new to the game and recently got fitted for forgiving irons and funnily I tried out every iron on your list. Walked away with the Pings as the dispersion and consistency was the best for me.
I was looking for a GI iron that didn't have that bulky look. Ended up with Ping 710. They look great, and had the best trajectory for me. I agree the sound is a little weird, but they work!
I think your list should be top 5 if you care about look, feel and sound. If you only care about ease of hitting/ forgiveness, it is hard not to have either the Cobra T Rail or the Cleveland Launcher XL on you list.
Good video really enjoyed watching. What do you think on the new titliest t300 ? I thought I would off seen them in the top 5. Soon as I have time am going to try the callaway/hot metal and the new titliest and see what I feel most comfortable using 👏🏻
i enjoyed the reviews and its nice to see a golfer like us that hits over the top a little (by the tee mark on the bottom of the 7 Ping) but it seems more of a review about aesthetics than forgiveness..
Well, I got the Cobra F-Max with the Blue Insert They are very nice and the Offset makes it easy to hit straight I could not afford the newest of all clubs, my set came with the 4 and 5 Hybrids too I just can not afford to pull the trigger on the matching Driver and 3 Wood
Wanted something in irons that compare to the highly priced irons. I played with Callaway Mavrik Mac Irons with Senior shafts and found them competent but struggle a bit with them. As you can guess, I'm a mid to high handicappers but I have a strong swing speed. I didn't want to spend a lot of money for brand irons, so I bought a set of irons from Amazon. They called Larzus iron set with regular shafts and geared for mid to high hanicappers. Played with them for a couple on rounds and played better, much better. These are just as brand irons and cost only $297 for the set 4-pw.
There were so many to choose from this year and I think you came up with a great lineup. My partner plays the Mizuno, I tried them ,sweet, a great club.
Think that sound, feel and aesthetics are important to all golfers to be fair. They do impart a certain amount of confidence that makes the swing more committed I think. I am using the 921 Forged and it was a toss up at fitting at Fore Golf between those and Cobra's. The feel off the face did it for me and was actually worth springing the extra £150 for I think overall. You do need something that you can look down on with some confidence and also feel the good shots no matter what level of golfer you are, there is more feedback than just where the shot finishes or how many "good bad ones" you can get away with in a round, usually sound and feel does this best IMO. Also, and slightly weirdly, I like a club that looks good after you have cleaned them, so I don't like "matt" type clubs generally.
Love this list! Certainly a lot of others have said great things about your top 2. From looks, I prefer number 2 over number 1, but man I would not mind having either of them. Also, those Wilsons are probably the best for brand-new starters, because the value is unbeatable!
Went for a fitting at Scottsdale in Warrington and tried every forgiving irons. It came down to two callaway mavrik max and titleist T300 and purely down to fee and looks l i bought the Titleist
I have to agree with Neil, who commented on your list, why isn’t the PXG 0211 irons on your list? I watched your review on them recently and you gave high praise for how forgiving it is and how it ticked all of the boxes for you. Looks, feel, price and the best sounding cast iron you’ve ever reviewed and even compared the feel to a good forged iron. 🤔
The question posed is which is the most forgiving? If they are all as forgiving then it’s just a value - look thing ? Surely to win they must give the best result for off centre shots ? Which club does that ?
All these are good for 5 to 15 handicaps. Clubs like Tour Edge E522 iron/hybrids or Cleveland's HL Halo are better suited for HC's higher than 15. BUT....many would never consider them due to ego.
Recently went to the taylormade performance lab for a fitting where I tried all of your top 5 picks however the numbers spin and launch and distance were better for me when I tried srixon zx5 with Nippon shafts!!! Great looking clubs it only took 6 months to get them from the day I ordered them
Is sound, feel, and aesthetics important? Very much so. Would you want to hit a club that you may not have the most confidence in? That's the biggest club in your bag, is confidence. Yes those items you mentioned are super important.
Yours is a good list, but I think that the new Titleist T300 should find a place here. However, it was introduced just a few weeks ago and maybe you are thinking it is for 2022.
Forgiveness is such a funny topic to me. I’m a 15hc. I strike my srixon z585 7i 185yds. I’m 15 handicapper cuz some days I’m just off. I might be in my own head and leave the face open and push the ball over to the next fairway. No clubs forgiveness is gonna help with that or when I decide to blade an approach shot.
I can only assume you think the PXG 0211’s come into a different category because they are as forgiving as any of your top 5 and way better feeling and looking and come in at just £80 a iron. And just for the record I think the 0211’s would fit into both the most forgiving mid/High handicap irons and also the players mid handicap irons.
@@TheAverageGolfer But that would imply that PXG don’t make a mid handicap forgiving club because the only other club that PXG make that would fit into this bracket is the 0311 xp which is nearly the same profile,Same offset and very similar lofts. The only noticeable difference is the head material and the supposedly 9% moi over the 0211which to 99.9% of golfers won’t make a jot.Are you saying PXG don’t make a forgiving mid handicap iron and every iron they make is aimed at better players?
You should check out Haywood irons from Vancouver Canada. They have a fitter in ireland that could help you out to test them. Ian fraser at txg and michael newton have tested them. unbelivable value.
@@TheAverageGolfer I like them alot they are more traditional lofts than most clubs these days my 7 iron is 34 degrees , I was happy with distance of my old irons went to find more precision. When the right shaft was dialed in I gained 9 yards and had a 5 yard dispersion.
@@TheAverageGolfer because they are not a “game improving” iron, or because they are harder to hit? I am a high handicap/somewhat beginner, thinking of the 0211 after watching your video on them. Would you suggest the apex over them?
I could never play Ping Irons for the looks, ( same for their woods ) it's the hosel that bothers me big time. I game Mizuno JPX 921 Forged and Cobra RADSPEED woods.
The Callaway DCB is more of a player's distance club. I had them, they are forged and really don't go. Bad recommendation for a high handicap player. I'm a 10 handicap bought the regular Apex 21's played them for a while they were okay. I am hitting the titleist T-300 now that's a club. How in the world could you leave it out. D-9 what a shovel. T-300 good looking and great forgiveness and it go's. Go hit it...
Owned the Wilson D9 for around 4 months now and shooting my best rounds and more consistently. My bad shots are still half decent and really happy overall. Plus the price saving and distance gains are unmatched.
Can I ask what you normally shoot?
The APEX DCB was the runner up at my fitting. I chose the Taylormade P790 (2021) based on the fact that I had a 160 yard carry with a 7i. I am a 62 year old mid handicapper. At my fitting I did discover I needed a 2 degree up lie, I never knew that so please promote getting fit for your set. Thanks for the info!
I own the Mizuno hot metal irons and love them. Forgiveness, looks, feel, sound they check every box......

Andy, I went with Clevelands Launcher XL Halo’s. I'm 66 and had a few injuries and more than willing to go with hybrids.
I’m playing the ping G425 and love them. Have been able to take 6 strokes off my game in 3 months.
Got 5-AW in Callaway DCB and really love them...looking forwards to the 2nd generation when callaway launch them...
Great review as always Andy

I would have included the new Titleist T300, if only for the massive improvement in looks from the original version
As a golfer that fits squarely into this game improvement category the only important factor is how well I hit it. It could sound like a cowbell, look like a pool noodle and feel like a 2x4 and I couldn't care less as long as I can hit it well and get my handicap down.

Great review Andy and all great irons. I’m still testing between T400, DCB, Sim max2O/S, , G425 and Mizuno JPX921 Hot metal. I’m also going to look at

And G425. I agree the DCB look great and forged for the high handicapper a game changer.
Cleveland Launcher Turbo irons. Definitely #1 !
Aesthetics are very important for me as well as sound. I like a more slender, traditional looking iron.
Cleveland “Halo” in 5, 6, and 7. Cleveland Turbo Launcher in 8, 9, and pw. Cleveland CBC wedges. Yes, I am a huge Cleveland fan.
Bought the SIM2 MAX a couple of weeks ago. Absolutely love them!
Glad you like them!
Same here and enjoying them too. Great vid - as always!

th-cam.com/video/yte-vyGt4UU/w-d-xo.html See what TXG thinks is the easiest iron to hit in 2021

Loved the blog Andy big suprise there was no room for PXG 0211 great work mate keep it going 👍
Yes I dont think they fall into this category, might be wrong
I was looking for a GI iron that didn't have that bulky look. Ended up with Ping 710. They look great, and had the best trajectory for me. I agree the sound is a little weird, but they work!
I think your list should be top 5 if you care about look, feel and sound. If you only care about ease of hitting/ forgiveness, it is hard not to have either the Cobra T Rail or the Cleveland Launcher XL on you list.
Your “equipment opinion” aside, you pick the most beautiful locations to film.
Good video really enjoyed watching. What do you think on the new titliest t300 ? I thought I would off seen them in the top 5. Soon as I have time am going to try the callaway/hot metal and the new titliest and see what I feel most comfortable using 👏🏻
I was thinking “Apex DCB” as my #1 from the very beginning of your video.
i enjoyed the reviews and its nice to see a golfer like us that hits over the top a little (by the tee mark on the bottom of the 7 Ping) but it seems more of a review about aesthetics than forgiveness..
Well, I got the Cobra F-Max with the Blue Insert
They are very nice and the Offset makes it easy to hit straight
I could not afford the newest of all clubs, my set came with the 4 and 5 Hybrids too
I just can not afford to pull the trigger on the matching Driver and 3 Wood
Wanted something in irons that compare to the highly priced irons. I played with Callaway Mavrik Mac Irons with Senior shafts and found them competent but struggle a bit with them. As you can guess, I'm a mid to high handicappers but I have a strong swing speed. I didn't want to spend a lot of money for brand irons, so I bought a set of irons from Amazon. There were so many to choose from this year and I think you came up with a great lineup. My partner plays the Mizuno, I tried them ,sweet, a great club.
Great video great advice. New subscriber now. Always nice to have more local vloggers. I'm in Frodsham.
Thanks for the video, love my 921's!
surprised the ZX4 didn’t make it - then again Srixon always seem to be overlooked
I play the srixon z785 irons really good iron and forgiving had them for 3 years now and won't change
Great video Andy!
But you gave away the #1 iron when you were leaning on the callaway on the tee box callaway logo facing the camera😁🙈
I'm playing PXG Gen2 0311 XF and am pleased. The key is 4-6 hybrids also from PXG
Feel
Are there differences in terms of the distance obtained using the same loft with each make of club?
I tested all earlier in the year and all were better than my own set. Went with T300 but G425 were close.
Both you and James make great videos!!! You guys are really cool
I recently purchased the Honma TR21x looks fantastic and easy to hit.
Feel and sound is great but a bit pricey.
Apex dcb and Mizuno jpx are both forged which is pretty cool for game improvement clubs.
I wouldnt put them in this category Rich maybe a mistake but if I did they would be right up there
I don’t notice the sound and feel on my Ping G425 unless I thin-it, I use a soft feel tour ball! They (U-7) do launch high
The question posed is which is the most forgiving? If they are all as forgiving then it’s just a value - look thing ?
Surely to win they must give the best result for off centre shots ? Which club does that ?
This 20HCP hacker got fitted for Hot Metal pro’s this year, and yes looks really matters, even for us weekend farmers. :)
Brought the t300s last year but couldn’t get on with them. Ended up trading them in for a set of sim 2 max OS and haven’t looked back.
All these are good for 5 to 15 handicaps. Clubs like Tour Edge E522 iron/hybrids or Cleveland's HL Halo are better suited for HC's higher than 15. BUT....many would never consider them due to ego.
Taylormade m2 irons have tried other irons. Always go back to these
Recently went to the taylormade performance lab for a fitting where I tried all of your top 5 picks however the numbers spin and launch and distance were better for me when I tried srixon zx5 with Nippon shafts!!! Great looking clubs it only took 6 months to get them from the day I ordered them
I picked up a set of the cleveland UHX irons 4-PW for $500 brand new. I'm excited to play some rounds with them!
Is sound, feel, and aesthetics important? Very much so. Would you want to hit a club that you may not have the most confidence in? That's the biggest club in your bag, is confidence. Yes those items you mentioned are super important.
Got my G425s soon after release, love them!
Thanks Andy a great and honest review 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Where would the PXG 0211 and 0311 fit into this kind of test? Would either make the top 5 or top 10? Which is more forgiving b/t the 0211 and 0311?
Definitely agree with your top two would be hard to split them if I ever the chance to upgrade
Another great video 👍
I bought a set of Taylormade M6's and just can't use them. Really like the look of the Mizunos but these days, there's just too much to choose from!
Yours is a good list, but I think that the new Titleist T300 should find a place here. However, it was introduced just a few weeks ago and maybe you are thinking it is for 2022.
Calloway Big Birtha. Super light. SIM2 was good just too heavy comparatively
Yes, or course look and feel and sound make the total difference :-) (my favourite is the JPX 921 forged, by the way).
Calloway dcb irons and epic woods I really like the sound and feel
I would think the the 0211s are more like the P790's and T200 and non of which I feel in this category Neil
The PXG 0211 are, for me, just as forgiving as these “game improvement” irons and they don’t look like you are hitting a sledgehammer.
You should check out Haywood irons from Vancouver Canada. They have a fitter in ireland that could help you out to test them. Ian fraser at txg and michael newton have tested them. unbelivable value.
im thinking about callaway dcb
Game the Mizuno JPX 919 hot metal, decided no reason to upgrade to the JPX 921.
Great line up and review not playing any of these and it's a smaller retail brand orka
Any good?
@@TheAverageGolfer I like them alot they are more traditional lofts than most clubs these days my 7 iron is 34 degrees , I was happy with distance of my old irons went to find more precision. When the right shaft was dialed in I gained 9 yards and had a 5 yard dispersion.
If it improved my gameplay I would use a brick tied to the end of a stick. I do like the look of the Mizuno JPX 921 Hot Metal though!
Good review! Got to get ahead of James. They say tools not jewels, but who wants an ugly iron in the bag?
All I care about is how and where the ball goes! Sort of surprised that the Cleveland Halo irons didn't make the list.
will be getting a Cleveland 6i Halo this week. See what it does.
I am playing remarkably better with the Wilson Staff brand! I can't imagine any club being better!
The PXG 0211 wasn’t on list? I saw your review and just wondering why it wasn’t on the list. Do they not stack up to this list?
I wouldnt out them in this category Jeff
@@TheAverageGolfer because they are not a “game improving” iron, or because they are harder to hit? I am a high handicap/somewhat beginner, thinking of the 0211 after watching your video on them. Would you suggest the apex over them?
Bought the Wilson d9 this year getting more distance even poor strikes get out there
How many manufacturers did you test?
Matching the shaft to head?
What about the Callaway Marvrik Max?
What about stuff like the Cleveland Halos? Or is that a different category?
Ive not tried them Matt so couldnt comment
@@TheAverageGolfer You have tested the previous modesl though. So why not even a mention of the hollow bodied irons?
Titelist t200 are my choice
I could never play Ping Irons for the looks, ( same for their woods ) it's the hosel that bothers me big time. I game Mizuno JPX 921 Forged and Cobra RADSPEED woods.
Missing 0211 and 0311 xp... If you want the most forgiving cleveland halo xl
I dont think they should be in this group of irons, would have also put P790's in if that was the category
Funny that you guys call it the golf season, I’m down in Key West, we play all year long. No season!!
For me the T300 was the overall best.
What about the new t300?
Of the five on this list….I choose the Titleist T300 2021. The new T300 is better than the five on this list.
