Did my first stump job today with a 12" DK2 and it kicked the crap out of me lol. I want to sell my lawnmower and buy a better grinder that Disko with the swivel and side shoot looked real nice until I can afford them nice $20K+ ones.

Way to go Paul. I started the same exact way. A few pointers.
      Never over tighten the brake
      Buy the following
      3 brake cables
      1 brake assembly
A bunch of air filters and change often
Green teeth wheel and 500 series teeth if it didn't come with green teeth
4 extra belts at a farm store. They are usually cheaper at farm stores
Extra belt case bolts. They rattle loose and fall out
Use Kohler oil and red-n-tacky grease. Grease every time you use it.
Work clockwise around the bigger stumps. Trust me.
Slowly we engage the clutch and it will outlive the motor.
Always fuel with premium gas. You need everything you can get
Purchase an easy up tent. It will keep the sun off your back in the summer.
Congrats on the new venture Paul. I hope you come to love it as much as I have over the last 3 years. I still have my swing units. They are the best at chasing roots. And hard to get to jobs.

You have to charge what you need to and when your small you start out small prices and slowly increase as they go. We all start out someplace.

MustangRebuilder, it's funny how people jump to make a comment that's negative and don't bother commenting on the positive. I guess it makes them feel Superior or something. How about if you have nothing nice to say, then don't say it at all. Like you said, there are many factors to consider when pricing. I mean if she's smoking hot, she's getting a deal from me. 😁 thanks for all the great advice

More sage advice from a man who’s been there and done it.
Anyone who tears another man down for any reason really is less of a man for it. We need to be positive role models for others and that’s what makes the world go around.
I reckon the season just hasn’t started back up yet but I have a pretty strong marketplace and c-list add and I’ve gotten one call the past almost week. I think I’m going to drive around tomorrow and look for anyone that may need my services and stir up a chat.

Thanks for the video I was wondering about insurance. I am a lil over $1000 for a million dollar policy(Michigan) Been grinding part time since aug of last year didn’t want to take any loans out so got me a Vermeer 630a. Was blessed to have the owner not take a dime upfront until the grinder made the money to pay him. Well yesterday I paid him off. You can bet I will remember that and pay it forward to someone else in the future. Thanks for all you do. I don’t miss a grinding video.

Very Interesting....I do not have insurance yet, have gotten quotes like you just said a bit under $1,000.00 a year. I realize it's very important just incase you cut something into. Then you're COVERED !!. I also live in the midwest Where I think that I charge just enough for grinding stumps. Just for the example of this morning I done 5 pretty good size stumps ( Oak & Ash ) I charged $450 plus he give me a $20 tip lol. But it seems like not many home owners want too spend the extra to grind out their stumps. I have a Toro STX 26. Took me a Full 3hrs. Jus Sayin..

Love it! Great advice with the insurance. I am just getting started with a small business serving small residential needs. I am retired with good pensions. I don't have to make a lot of money I just want to have value for the time and service I provide. I hope I am not so busy that I cannot give more than asked to serve my customers. I do not know enough to ask a good question yet, but I hope to soon. I have taken care of most of my residential needs for all of my life and now just want to assist others to do the same with theirs. I feel I have found a wealth of information in your videos and appreciate you giving back. I historically am a teacher and that is what I do as well. Thanks Adam for another great video. You hit the nail on the head. Their is a lot of factors on how you should set your prices and ultimately it depends on how much you want to make an hour or for the day. Just like the guys that look down on the guys that have small machines. I have made probably over a million dollars with a handlebar unit over the last 25 years and just got the Alpine Magnum stump grinder about 2 years ago and have done over 30 thousand with that little machine. The thing is that, that's the size of machines needed for my area. Thanks again Adam for keeping it real.

Funny to see you upset like that. Will check out my insurance company, maybe it will get cheaper, insurance in Canada is very expensive (I'm around 3000CAD/yr for all equipment and responsibility). About price on stumps, I believe that as long as you are making enough money for your business be profitable and to grow, then your price are set. Some gets better deals than others and that's life. I knew about Kingmen, great guy and very hard worker out there!!!! Enjoy your Sunday :)

Thank you so much for what you do! Your videos are so helpful. I am just getting started in stump grinding. Bought a used SC252 and things are going well. Can't tell you how much your videos have helped me. Who is your insurance provider? Every policy I am quoted, they are saying stump grinding falls under tree service. I can't find anyone who list it under landscaping. Any help would be much appreciated!

    • @mustangrebuilder
      @mustangrebuilder  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Try next or push them to look into landscaping because you do chip removal and sod and replant new plants and trees ,you don't cut down trees

Hey man thanks for all the advice. My son and I just got a walk behind grinder for our farm. We have been talking about using it to start a side business. Maybe use it to get to the next level of machine. We have a small farm, so it was the size of machine we could afford. But like you said got to start somewhere. I guess I was just looking for your thoughts. Is it possible to make money with that machine. Its a PowerKing 14hp machine. What you think is it worth the effort? Were in Missouri Lake of the Ozarks area so plenty of trees and stumps. Anyway any advice would be greatly appreciated. Keep up the great vids. Wish you the best. Dennis S.

It is painful if you are often being undercut on fair prices. I understand that feeling. It takes time and effort to get around doing quotes. There are some around that will try to find out what others have quoted and drop 10% lower. These people need to learn how to quote! Just make the as many customers are satisfied as possible. Eventually the good reports and recommendations will work in your favour. The cheapest quote isn't the best value. A few times I have done small tree jobs for nothing for people who really really deserved it. People who were in a tough spot and needed their money for other things but had to get chipping done. I doesn't mean that I charge others too much. It is just volunteering your services. Any time you give a discount it might not be dropping the prices. It might just be that you think the person is worthy of some kindness. It might be a pensioner or a veteran or just someone who really needs life to go their way for once. Its not done for publicity etc and not something i have ever told others. I have sold my tree company now so i don't care. I like to think it will give you good karma. The state of the customers yard is what they see and the only thing others will see of your efforts. Take the time to leave it neat and fix or replace anything that gets broken. Its your reputation! Charge enough to make you want to do the work but not enough to feel guilty about it.

A quick question do you need to be licensed in your state to grind stumps? I am from New Jersey and in 2017 I believe they started the tree care licensing. A couple people have told me now they're trying to apply that to stump grinding as well.
Any info you have would be helpful
