    High porosity with fine hair. My hair loves protein. Your videos helped me recognize how many products that I use that have protein in them. I was worried that I was suggesting from protein overload, but you just put the worry to bed. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!! I've been working very hard to maintain healthy natural hair!!

      I have the exact same problem! I don't get it as HP hair is supposed to love protein, but when I do an intensive protein treatment my hair starts to feel like hay and the ends break off. A low protein one is fine and Olaplex is also fine. I am really struggling on finding the right balance that my hair likes, because I feel like it's doing pretty good untill that protein treatment...

      @@jk9084 I am also high porosity protein sensitive.. and apparently there’s a small community of us 😩!! How often do you use products with protein? Once a month or once every two months ?....

    • @jk9084
      @jk9084 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mizzmiami3242 I tried to do it once every 2-3 months (Aphogee or gelatin treatment) but I think it is too harsh. What I did discover by researching is that I need to follow up with a moisturizing, protein-free conditioner so I may try that or play it safe and just mix my hemp protein powder, wheat protein extract, or gelatin with avocado, banana or conditioner, honey and oils as a protein treatment to balance it out with moisture. Also, other products in my routine contain amino acids and/or protein: leave in conditioner (Cantu shea butter), natural gels, oils and spritz (aloe, flaxseed, rice water, hemp, moringa, fenegreek etc.). As you can tell, I use ayurveda too and it made a big difference in my hair health ;).

    I dearly wish I'd known about things like this when I was younger. Now I'm 50, with fine, high density, low porosity hair that is rapidly going grey (which I love) -- I have 2b / 2c waves with 3a curls below, and until recently I had NO idea of my hair type or how to properly treat it. I cut 15 inches off for the summer and starting fresh, and really struggle with knowing just what kinds of protein treatments to use (or not use), and how often. It doesn't take much to weigh my curls down, especially in a place with high humidity, and I loathe the feeling of product residue in my hair. I've not had any luck with leave-in conditioners for that reason.
    With that context in mind, I'm very curious to know more about how to tell between small vs large protein treatments for fine, low-porosity hair, so I have a better idea of what to seek out and what to avoid. Thank you SO much for clearly breaking this down!

    • @AfopeAtoyebi
      @AfopeAtoyebi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah this sounds about right. I’d say perhaps be mindful of the size of proteins you’re using. If your hair is low porosity and fine, then it’s likely that your hair will react better to small-medium sized proteins.

    Protein relationship for me is like a cat in a bathtub. It ain't happening, sis.
    I have low-porosity, type 1 hair that won't hold a perm for more than a week, maybe medium-or-thick densely packed strands that are frizzy, extremely dull yet super soft to the touch--it's confusing the hell-o out of me. It looks oily all the time and snaps even when wet strands are pulled. When spritzing with water, the water just beads up and just floats off my head. My hair will stay wet all night if I wash it before bed.
    After watching a few of your videos, I bought the Honey shampoo you mentioned and need to find a deep conditioner to see if this is protein overload. I have no idea anymore. Binging on your protein series this weekend and hoping to find some relief.

    Coconut oil is supposed to be amazing for hair. Why does it leave some textures feeling dry and straw like

    • @Mayaspiral
      @Mayaspiral 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Different oils behave differently. Coconut oil and Shea butter penetrate into the cuticles of your hair. For people with high porosity hair this can be great but for people with low porosity hair this can suffocate your cuticles causing dryness and a straw like feeling. If you have high porosity hair try almond oil. It's a lightweight oil that sits on top of your hair shaft instead of penetrating it and that's easily soluble unlike coconut oil. It will make your hair feel soft and manageable.

    • @delightfuly21

    My fine , highpo hair loves small proteins, but gets shredded by larger proteins (ie pritein from most food items like rice , mayonnaise or eggs is too large for my strands and cuts into them .instead. I end up with so much breakage and my hair breaks off in handfuls)

  • @AyaSings

    I feel like my hair is high porosity in the front and extremely low porosity in the back... because the hair in the front looks and feels soft and has curl definition.. but the back is all dry, coarse, and no definition at all. And i cant really tell is my hair needs protein or moisture.. or if it’s overloaded with protein or moisture..

    • @natth25
      @natth25 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have this same issue, but my hair is the opposite. The front barely absorbs water or any product, looks dry and has zero definition, while the back absorbs water in a minute, has all the curls and is the softest part of my hair. I was going crazy about this, thank you so much for letting me know that I'm not the only one! I was honestly about to give up on my hair. Did you find a solution?

    this video was so damn good, wish i watched it sooner 😭 i have thick wavy courser hair (not certain on porosity tbh, i’m guessing higher) and i’m pretty sure i’m protein sensitive, and there’s protein ingredients in like all my products ;__; my biggest hair ‘problem’ is that it’s so prone to breakage and dryness, and i’m thinking that could be caused by too much protein that i already naturally have. i’m a college student so i can’t afford to get all new stuff haha, but i also don’t want to waste my other products. gonna watch your protein free product vid and see if i can find some more super moisturizing products to balance it out 🥴💚

    Hi Afope! You are amazing and beautiful 😍😍. I am glad I found your channel This week through AfrikanHairGod’s live stream. I have low porosity which is protein sensitive and am a serious product hoarder. I am however trying to clear my stash and focus on what really works!! I always used to wonder why the knot today worked so well for my hair compared to Shea butter containing products. Now I know why! Aubrey Organics GPB conditioner is an excellent source of mild protein for low porosity hair. It contains milk proteins, silk amino acids and hydrolysed protein right at the bottom of the list. Instead of strong proteins I use henna and it makes my strands thicker and stronger. The Redken extreme line makes my hair super brittle even the shampoo alone 🥺

      Aaaah Michelle, you're going to make me cry, you are too sweet! I am SO so grateful for the feature and for all your support. I'm most glad that you're finding this content helpful. I have high porosity hair and my hair LOVES the Redken extreme line - but you're right. I certainly wouldn't be able to confidently recommend it for low porosity hair as it's more likely to be problematic.
      Also thank you for the suggestion of the Aubrey Organics GPB conditioner for other low porosity curlies on the channel! Bless you!

    I really wish more companies would make more protein sensitive products. Im fed of having to spend my life reading the ingredient list. I know coconut oil is cheap and therefore it is in alot of beauty products, but so is sunflower oil.
    Being protein sensitive has been a journey.I never understood why my hair why my hair wasnt growing. It was of course. It was just growing, breaking and shedding. And on top of that I was using products with lots of Aloe Vera, coconut oil and wheat protein.
    Question of the day:
    I just wonder why we have these different porosities and protein sensitivities?

      From one Black Brit to another.
      I am low porosity and protein sensitive. Other lines, that I use and maybe worth a look at:
      The pantene gold series, the leave on detangling milk , deep conditioner
      Giovanni range shampoo, conditioners and direct weightless conditioner leave in.
      Giovanni 2chic avocado+ olive oil line, shampoos +conditioners
      Primal beauty: This is an English line. I use calm coil detangling spray.
      Kera care 2 leave in conditioner.
      My favourite of all time is the Camille Rose rice milk
      +macadamia.
      Tip: when everybody is singing the praises of a new product and all types of hair like it. Then it maybe worth a look. Couple of examples shea moisture black jamaican castor oil shampoo and the camille rose rice milk

    I’m low porosity and use protein free products. However, I add fenugreek to my regimen to reduce hair shedding. I currently have protein overload from using too much fenugreek. Protein overload sucks. I’m now going to try Sulfur8 scalp treatment to reduce shedding.

    • @AfopeAtoyebi
      @AfopeAtoyebi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A few things:
      1. Sulfur is great for scalp flaking, and dermatitis, however, I don't know that this as much of an effective treatment for shedding as other things
      2. Please be careful about applying grease to your scalp directly and leaving it there. Greasing the scalp is actually one of the main things that cause scalp conditions and flaking.
      3. If you are experiencing an unusual amount of shedding, I would love to help you out. If you're interested, you can visit my website (www.afopeatoyebi.com) and see if any of my services will be helpful to you.

    HEY🤗🤗🤗🤗 New subbie. I'm high porosity, fine strands, low to medium density and my hair cannot handle too much protein. It makes it difficult for me to know how often I should use protein. I am not sure of what a good, effective small protein is compared to a larger (stronger) protein so I can avoid the ones too strong for my hair.

  • @a.mariedixon-jenkins
    @a.mariedixon-jenkins 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am not surprised I have protein overload. I just realized every hair product I have has some form of protein in it, some even have 3 or more in them. When my hair was more dense I could handle more protein. It is now thin due to medication. I have fine hair and low porosity.

    So grateful I found your channel. I've learned much from watching your videos. Please create an identifying our hair types video. I have no idea what my hair type is. It is soft curly in the back, straight in the front. I used rice water 3 consecutive weeks 1st week hair looked great after that it just became frizzier & dryer. Now I can't get it to soften & the volume has tremendously decreased. I'm just trying to keep the hair I have left & make it healthy again. HELP!!!

    Hi Fope! IG follower who just made it to your TH-cam 😁
    So I have low porosity hair and fine strands and dryness is kicking my butt! It’s weird, when I moisturize my hair it’s super soft but after maybe 3 days, it’s back to being dry. I don’t get it because I know for sure that I have low porosity hair and it should retain the moisture longer. And remoisturizing is a chore because products just sit on my strands on the 2nd go. It’s like I can only get products into my hair after a wash. It’s exhausting 😩
