    You should clarify that the study mentioned talks about the use of dimethicone in conditioning shampoos (2-1), so when they say no considerable dimethicone remains after washing, they are saying there is no build up when used with sulfates ("anionic sulfactants"). That doesn't mean dimethicone doesn't build up between washes. The study only confirms that sulfate-based shampoos eliminate dimethicone build up. So, the point is whether use sulfates and frequency or not.

    New subscriber! 💕 Seriously you and the curly chemist have probably just made my hair journey and struggle so much easier. I'm Puerto Rican, and in our community curly hair was seen as "nappy" and needed to be relaxed and blown out to look what the community deemed as manageable. With the naturals hair movement i was finally able to say no to relaxer and see my natural pattern for the first time. The natural community also kept feeding me lies and having me spend so much on these "clean" products, but i couldn't even get my hair to my armpits 😩 now with understanding porosity better, learning that silicones are fine, and a little water and grease won't hurt, my hair is thriving and retaining moisture so much better than years of trying to follow the CGM. Thank you for all information and help for all of us learning to manage and love our texture 😊💖

She really needs to update her book, the amount of frustration, wasted money in wrong products, misinformation and countless bad hair days this book has caused to this day is unbelievable! I know it's a rarity on the Interwebs for someone to genuinely say "You've convinced me I was wrong" but damn girl you've convinced me I was wrong! I've worn my hair natural my whole life (mostly bc I didn't want to go through the trouble of straightening it lol) and for as long as I've been choosing my own products I thought all silicones were all bad. I slowly started realizing that I may have been judging them too harshly, and started SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOWLY opening my mind to water soluble sillicones, but didn't use any products that included them. But constantly being on edge about silicones was really annoying, and after seeing dimethicone in a product ingredient list that I thought I'd read a billion times, I was freaking TIRED. However, after watching a few of your videos and falling in love with your science-based reviews and product guides, I wanted to see what you said about silicone and OMG I've been wrong about silicones for so long!!!! I have been LIED to by people who were also misinformed and I wish I'd known this years ago!! I personally still don't use sulfates because even gentle ones make my hair SO DRY even after conditioner, but this video has changed my opinion of hair products forever! I have unsubscribed from all the curly hair channels that made me think silicones were Lucifer in a conditioner bottle (which was all the ones I'd subscribed to besides Manes By Mell)Thank you so much for showing me the light! On top of that, you have made me realize that I want to study trichology and cosmetic chemistry in college, so thanks so much for that too!

      I wrote this whole response to this comment but for some reason it didn't register :( I'll try and summarise my initial comment.
      1. Thank you so much
      2. Hair's pH is 5.5 and most hair care products are formulated with this pH to maintain this pH in the hair/scalp - Castile soap is about 9. This is more than baking soda. This level of alkalinity can be very damaging and also increase porosity. So I wouldn't been super keen on trying it - especially if you already have high porosity hair. This is my opinion though.

    If I understood correctly, my shampoo and hair mask shouldn't have silicones but my hair can benfit from my styling products having them? This way I can ensure proper moisture and proper sealing.

    I will shampoo my hair with sulphates because I want to get my hair squeaky clean regardless so I can put that moisture back into my hair. However, silicones are still a no for me... (so is glycerin). This is a choice based on personal experience and years of trial and error in my natural hair journey. I went a long time not using silicones on a modified CG regimen and then tried silicone products again and I just didn't like how my hair felt after several uses. I have tried and true silicone free products that work for me so if it ain't broke I ain't got nothing to fix. That said I enjoyed this video. I appreciate you feeding me all this knowledge on silicones. I learned a lot.

    I’m a bit confused. For the silicones that do not accumulate on top themselves how are they able to do that if they do not evaporate? Also can one “re-moisturize” that is sprits water on their hair that already has silicone in it and reapply the silicone as a sealant to get their hair soft again?

    That’s very interesting! Until I had a terrible case of psoriasis including my poor poor scalp, I could use any old shampoo, but now, if I go anywhere one that contains SLS, I get a terrible itchy scalp. Only recently I started using conditioner with silicones in, and I’ve had no build up issues. On the other hand I still need a good shampoo to clarify my hair as I live in a very hard water area. When I was living in Australia I could actually do without any sulfates in shampoos but now it’s needed as I live in the U.K... it’s hard also to find product for my hair as they are wavy, but most products for wavy hair target thin hair, my hair strands are medium to coarse, and there is a lot too!

    I’m loving your content- keep it coming! I have high porosity hair as well, and I’ve struggled with having frizzy ends. I’ve cut several inches off my hair twice now thinking it was split ends, but it’s not. Do you have any ideas as to what causes that or how to prevent it?

    • @AfopeAtoyebi
      @AfopeAtoyebi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you so much! That’s interesting - Id say I have a similar experience with my hair too, but that’s just because hair increases in porosity the further down you go, so unless you trim every month (which I don’t advise), it’s not unusual for your ends to be frizzier in comparison to the rest of your hair.
      And the increase in porosity means your ends will also lose moisture quicker/easier than the rest of your hair. So they’re always more likely to slightly frizzier. I’d say focus your moisturising efforts on your ends and keep them away as much as possible to preserve them.
      💓

    I think at least for me the problem with silicons started at a young age, when all we knew was shampoo+conditioner. And the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ingredients of all mainstream shampoos and conditioners were respectively water, sulfate, sulfate and water, silicon, silicon. For my low porosity hair, that was a death sentence that produced a very ugly cycle. So when I heard someone say "Silicones and sulfates bad" and I switched to non-sulfate shampoos and non-silicon conditioners, I saw a massive improvement. But it's time to reevaluate! Thank you for this content, super informative!
