In Austria, Ferdinand was similarly nicknamed "Ferdinand der Gütige" (Ferdinand the Benign), but also ridiculed as "Gütinand der Fertige" (Goodinand the Finished). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferdinand_I_of_Austria
I love the story of Ferdinand. Originally slated to be just a landless forgotten brother of Charles V, he was granted Austria as a compromise and a show of friendship by his brother. He uniquely wasn't Emperor for most of his reign, and had to support the Burgundian-Spanish part of the Habsburg Empire regularly while also being constantly invaded by the Ottomans. And yet... he managed to improve the economy of Austria proper, claim Hungary with some legitimacy, balance the Lutheran and Catholic German princes while maintaining good relations with the papacy among many other things. The stresses and budgeting of being on the brink reveal excellence.
France: Bad news! The USA has joined the side of the Central Powers! Britain: Oh bloody hell! Now I’m going to have to divert resources to Canada! France: No, not that USA! 🤦♂️
What if in this universe America really joined it would be like Britain: the USA joined the central powers France: that's why this war started Britain: no not that usa France: Impossible
Maybe with there not being a second world war, english might not be quite so dominant, allowing more countries to use abbreviations based on their own languages. So USÖ or VSÖ. After all Austria is Austria only in English. In German it's Österreich. Hmm... I wonder if that would lead to a different basic letter standard and keyboard layouts. ASCII does have the Umlaute in it, but the more simplified systems sometimes don't.
This is such a cliche. Russia was the 4th largest economy in 1914 nearing the position of 3rd by 1917. They were industrialised. It was the autocracy and incompetent military that forced Russia nor industrialization.
I have to disagree about the Roman Empire since they last over 800 years befor breaking in two and even the East Rome last almost thousand. No nation has lasted as long except maybe China.
Rome had barely left it's native Italy for the first 400 of those 800 years, so doesn't really count as a multicultural/ethnic empire. The Eastern Empire also spent ~800 of those 1000 years almost entirely Greek. Again, doesn't really count as multicultural.
@@theStormWeaver The Italian peninsula prior to the roman conquest was a region comprised of many different people groups ranging from Etruscans, Oscans, Italian Greeks, Umbrians, Messapians and even Celts. Isn't that considered multicultural?;-) Furthermore, 400 years of rulling places such as Egypt, Syria and Africa is not something that should be undermined.
@@celestialweaver8460 But they were, mostly (excepting the Celts who were mostly genocided and the Etruscans), Italic peoples. Even back then they were recognized as such. AND even then there was a lot of internal strife that was not managed well by Rome. Hence, the Social War. But the point was that, no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't hold it together. Civil War was almost a constant. Even in the "Pax Romana" we have 68-69 CE, the Year of Four Emperors, a period of extreme internal strife and violence. I'd also argue that the East benefited from heavy Hellenization by the Diadochi in prior centuries. They did the best they could, but large culturally diverse nations don't tend to last long. I wouldn't be surprised if India evaporated at some point in the next century or two.
If Austria Empire didn't collapse after ww1 i think ww2 would never heppend. First Hitler would never gain power, but even If he did Austria Empire would be very strong opposition to Germany and ww2 on that scale would never happened.
This would be good because as a Slovak i would have a higher incentive to play as Austria, Bohemia, Galicia, etc in all strategy games because they would essentially all be one country lmao. I know very important
can you make an alternate history scenario on if my parents never divorced? i would be interested in seeing how it would majorly affect global politics.
Noone really remembers but Poles fought on both sides during the Great War, but reason why they fought on the side of Central Powers was because of Austria-Hungary. There were few conceptions. One was Polish Kingdom with Polish Habsburg on throne; different one was peaceful annexation, more of unification of Polish lands within the Austro-Hungary, and giving Poland or West Slavs' land in general (again different variants) role of the Third Kingdom or Fourth if the South Slavs had get their own earlier. It's quite interesting topic tbh. Czechs and Poles were often allies within the Austro-Hungary. Some more radical sympathisers were proposing united Czecho-Polish nation, arguing that they would be stronger together, but it never came into fruition
if an multi ethnic empire would have worked out so much would have got better. Not even alot of wars would have been avoided but also the hole area would be richer even austria as it would have also profitet from the economic boom within the empire
As a Croat, if a Slavic state was created inside A-H, I would be happy if the center was in Czechia or Poland, not in Croatia like proposed in this video. Catholic Slavs are more numerous up north, and would be a far greater mass of land and people than what Croatia can expand to (the rest of the peninsula are orthodox or Muslim Slavs and that means either pro-Russian or Ottoman).
@@prohacker5086 Difference between Yugoslav nations and Zapadoslav nations is religion. Yugoslavia was divided between 3 religions while Zapadoslavia would be Catholic and maybe a little Atheist I.e. no religious conflicts
Fun fact: If the United States of Greater Austria (or Danubian Federation as I like to call it) would have formed and didn't collapse, it would be Europe's second largest country after Russia. Love all the countries of the former empire from Hungary :D
Honestly as a Croat replacing the name with "Danube" and de-germanize/de-madgyarize the federation I would be all for it. EDIT: All languages would be made equal but Latin should be the lingua de franca of the empire like e.g. in the military.
@@nietname2468 Latin isn't going to be readily available for everyone especially at the beginning but it should suffice for e.g. parliament to discuss and then journalists to translate it. Now modern times I don't think it will be a problem, I know 3 languages and so do many people around the world.
@@overlord165 not as a language in use, just use it for the official Name, as common neutral ground, in Parlament let all speak their languages, no point in forcing someone that not speaks well german or hungarian or etc. to speak one specific language in a Setting that requires skill and rethoric. Also schools teach first local local language, then local subdivision dominant language then german /hungarian. This Way you allow people to A Form strongest local ties , B protect local traditions which is important, C integrate them due to multilingualism better market access for workers allowing for a stronger economy. Not to mention such a School System that would probably be quite extensively funded.
@@nietname2468 What part of "de-germanize and de-madgyarize" don't you understand? Of course all languages should be allowed especially in the parliament but an Italian might not understand a Croat and vice versa if they are holding a discussion. But regardless a language, that is not German nor Madgyar, should be available and would multiply the effects on your list especially in the military.
It’s an interesting concept that had the Austro Hungarian empire remained we could have avoided World War II. But with its influence in the Middle East buy a turkey the politics of that region as well as its history Would be vastly different as well. This empire would have control from central Europe across the Black sea in parts of the Mediterranean. These water roots are so important that Russia today is still trying to gain access. Oil reserves that it would command in addition to its hegemony would make it a world power today. That being said, Soviet Russia would not have allowed that to stand without a fight. Water access and petroleum sales to Europe would have been hotly contested for decades which is why we are seeing their influence in Ukraine, Georgia and now Syria. It’s hard to say that establishment of this empire would have created lasting peace in preventing World War II, or would have created new friction with both Russia and the Allied powers of our timeline in the west. In either case, one man, Francis Ferdinand, just by living, could have changed the modern world.
Not if the German Empire also survives in this timeline, which would be basically a Central Powers victory scenario. But even with the German and Ottoman Empires still collapsing the USGA would remain the guarantor of stability in Central Europe. The main threat would come from the Soviets but the USGA could ally with neighboring countries like Poland and Bulgaria to deter Soviet expansion westward
He should not be attempted to pull the crazy is Serbia into the federation, he was dead, and the postwar history has proved the serbs not Yugoslavia, they just want big Serbia, in fact within the empire ethnic separatist never be a problem, the integration between the various nationalities have long history, I think is too importance to Hungary, Austria Hungary's brutal ethnic policies strengthened the centrifugal force of other ethnic groups, and Austria have no these problems under the governance of territory, ethnic diversity, instead let them more agree with the empire, but after the first world war the collapse of the empire has become a reality, unable to restore the Austria under the governance of territory, because and collapse in Russia, Ukraine, Poles have better choice, Croatia, Slovenia for Serbia with fantasy, and independent of Czechoslovakia makes the possibility of the reconstruction completely wiped out, if can early some influence within the territory of Hungary, Slovakia, Austria Romania national, put them together and Austria may not collapse, Or if Austria had not invaded Bosnia and Herzegovina, he could have divided the other Yugoslav peoples through religion, which would have consolidated the empire, but it fell apart
It's funny, I did a paper revolving around this concept for my History class in college. The concept was "If you were transported back to 1900, what would you do?" It was highly unrealistic, but I made my professor laugh so much beacuse of all the jokes I hid in it that he said she shared it with her fellow professors and they all loved it.
That's impossible, just today I made a special Austro-Hungary day that I've spent on learning more about Austria-Hungary, listening to AH songs, etc... I even watched your video about "What if AH had colonies" Damn, I'm lucky
The destruction of the Austro Hungarian empire was made on purpose by the allies, Austria-hungary was the most progressive, diverse and jewish-friendly state of Europe, its role was to protect its smaller nations within it from the other European powers who wanted to destroy it to turn eastern europe into their playground, and they did it. The nationalistic movements in both hungary and the other states are simply sad, i remember a quote said by the ruler of the czech republic after Germany annexed Austria: "Better Hitler than a Habsburg".
Canada would be American. This would make the US slightly more powerful. But I don't think it would change the world THAT much. The US being the worlds largest country area wise, surpassing even Russia could be a nice little prestige boost perhaps. But other than that I personally think world history would pan out similarly. The only major impact outside of north America I can see is that the British empire would be sightly weaker. Maybe that could have some unexpected consequences. I also think it's very possible that the french language in Quebec would be a lot less prevalent. In Canada it could remain an important and major language. But in a much larger US it would with time become pretty irrelevant. A lot more english speakers could also move to Quebec from the rest of this larger US with ease.
The fact that FranzJoseph lived for so long especially for his time is beyond comprehension, he lived through ruling 2 empires, the rapid industrialisation of Europe and most of the Great War
Ottomans wouldn't have risen and Austria would have been a silly Archduchy, Prussia wouldn't have been given to Brandenburg and the PLC would have probably blobbed uncontrollably into Russia and possibly even defended the HRE from France
@@4fallschirmjager Nah, the OP was already a great power, that ascendancy was inevitable with it's controll over trade, I'm not sure if it wouldn1t be even stornger, since the Jagello Juggernaught would not be as teasing a target as the often battered austrians. In fact , the occupation of Hungary was a net loss for the turks, it cost more to maintain than it gave back, it rebelled every other week and swallowed giant armies one after another. It might have been more advantegous for them to concentrate on defense and throw their massive strength at persia or expand southwards into Africa and then India.
Jagellos on the hungarian throne were weak and the kingdom was a whole big mess by that point with too powerful nobles. Me as a hungarian I prefer the Habsburgs they may be cruel sometimes but they knew how to rule.

The first thing I got in my mind is that spain sailed west because the african coast was already controlled by portugal and the eastern mediterranean by the muslims. Having the two kingdoms joining means that spain would not be the first in discover america. But it would be interesting seeing an empire mixing the two og conquistadores without competition between them.
If the U.S, of Austria had existed, it will be a Constitutional Monarchy and a Federation. The title of Emperor would be abandon and replace with King. Due to it being located mostly in Central Europe, the USA will be a powerful country. German will be one of the national legal languages. Overtime, USA will become a country like Switzerland.
@@panzerbanz7296 Empires have an expansionist stance. Turning Austria-Hungary into a Constitutional-Monarchical Federation would mean they would stop advancement into other territories. Also Empires usually centralize power, which is exactly the opposite of what a federation is supposed to be. So Der Kaiser would be replaced with Der König (The King).
The title of emperor could be kept, Japan has an emperor still, but it would be entirely ceremonial like the Japanese and also British models while parliament runs the actual government
The beauty of the Germans was their Greekness. Many city-states self-sufficient and loosely tied. Their attempt to be Roman is what ruined them. The HRE was a beautiful place full of quirky people and once Germany unified all of that ended.
@@4fallschirmjager i think the reason why Germany was so powerful when unified is because every little kingdom developed and strengthend itself and not all resources were put in just one main city.

I have to say multiethic Empires in Europe workout out for quite some time. The Habsburg-Empire existed for hundreds of years and only at the end if was called Austria-Hungary to give credits to two of the many Nationalities, but neglecting the rest. The problem was, that NATIONALISM seemed like a new, modern thing back then. Nationalism was the problem killing the multiethic, multireligious, multilinguistic countries. It was a fever in the 19th and 20th century. But now in a globalized world we understand that small nations are having a hard time only by themselves.
ROK Ball But.. Crimea has an average winter temperature of 4 degrees Celsius which is like 40 or something in Fahrenheit and It’s mountainous which is very different from the flat plains of Moscow and Central Europe and asia
dude why y'all still believe this crap? We russians ain't no supermen, we can freeze over just like other people (look up poor bastards from the Winter war).
It don't understand how you didn't mention Romanians in Transylvania, or Transylvania for that matter, at all. They were quite a large ethnic group, with no related ethnic group inside the empire, well except other Romanians in Bucovina in the Austrian part of the Empire, and the small number of Italians on the other side of the Empire, but with a separate state on the border of the Empire. Especially considering the proposal you are talking about was proposed by a Transylvanian Romanian politician, Aurel Popovici, and as far as I know was quite popular amongst Transylvanian intellectuals prior to the Great War as unification with Romania seemed impossible at that time. I might be biased being Romanian and from Transylvania myself, but still, I think we're relevant enough to the subject to have been mentioned :D
Italian and Dalmatian are related to Romanian. And tho Romanians formed a large ethnic group in Transylvania and Bukovina, their numbers were still nothing compared to Slavs, Germans and Hungarians.

I don’t think the USA or practically any other European power would be happy if Germany started wars for colonial holdings or even gained them peacefully. I only really see it happening as a possible “temporary” solution in China and that’s almost equally unlikely. Without Finland and the Baltic states being easy targets the USSR might turn its attention towards the Middle East and China. This could bring the USSR even more to bear and possible either a proxy war would start or the USSR would outright get involved with the communists in China. I could also see the USSR focusing more on Iran and Afghanistan and possibly trying to pressure Turkey, the problem with Iran and Afghanistan is the UK, specifically in Iran’s case. This could lead to a Second World War against the USSR and with possibly Germany and Italy taking advantage of the situation. This could lead the Austrian eastern states to stay neutral for a while until it became no longer a option as well Germany would still want Danzig and to unit “all Germans” and Italy would likely want the Croatian coast. This would bring the war to them and honestly I’m unsure who would win. I think the Allies and the Austrian powers would as they would be able to clear the Soviets possibly quite quickly out of colonial holdings and with the Axis on a two front war (bear in mind the Austrians would be to) could lead to Italy and then Germany falling. I feel like the Soviet’s would get off lightly at first with minor concessions near Murmansk and Leningrad as well as a independent Ukraine and full withdrawing from China. The Italians would likely have to give up Libya and East Africa to the British and, Rhodes to the Greeks and Trentino-Alto Adige to the Austrians. Germany would probably be occupied as per our to line but it might even be split up. Without many threats in Europe and Austria practically taking its place there would be no need for a whole strong Germany. Bavaria would likely be a Austrian supervised state, the saar going to France and the Rhineland being it’s supervised state and Hanover being the British supervised state while the Americans (if they ever join) would probably create a independent Prussian republic. Poland would also take Koenigsberg and rename it to Królewiec. I have no idea what Japan would be up to in this timeline. However I assume their focus in China would clash a lot with the soviets and this brining them against the USSR as well and possibly even taking Vladivostok, however unlikely. More likely is Japan would have border skirmishes with them in Mongolia and needing the Allies to win but not necessarily wanting to help them would probably stay neutral.
So the pro-shougunate forces won? Basically Emperor stays a figurehead, shogun is super powerful, Japan would probably still modernize anyways, though with some differences.
While this is an interesting premise, i think any sort of reform, at least by the time Franz Joseph died and Franz Ferdinand would take the throne is impossible. No one wanted to budge, no one liked the empire and giving greater autonomy to all those states would effectively mean almost dissolving the empire. Franz Ferdinand's plan was just a dream made by an out of touch elite that didnt understand the gravity of the situation. I honestly think that the only thing that could save Austria Hungary was if a huge war happened and many ethnicly tense lands were ripped away from it but without the empire itself being dissolved. The nobility would never willingly accept to lose that land, thus losing it by force could actually mean saving the empire since it simply couldnt stay togheter
Great video Mr. Z. I would propose and alternative name to the state though. The Danubian Confederation or Federation of the Danube. This was an idea entertained by some Hungarian nobles and politicians in the past.
it was a very rich and beautiful empire. the Anglo-Saxons turned the peoples of the empire against each other. that's how the HAPPY TIMES OF PEACE passed
Technically speaking, this is really “What if the United States of Austria even got to form?” because having a never-formed country succeed implies that it got to form and didn’t fail “immediately”. However I wouldn’t go so far as to a successful United States of Austria would preempt a second Great War entirely with Russia still going Communist in the same timeline; maybe the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth attempts to return as a Fascist state with Italian help, Germany being spared from Fascism by a strong German-led nation emerging from the war.
But idea is interesting: what if... considering that, at that time, Russia was in huge mess, and only opposing threat can be considered from Germany. But, for the sake of argument, lets assume AH survived and expanded (countries that were under AH dominance + countries that would perhaps joined /as mentioned in video), creating big state through Central Europe. Germany probably wouldn't consider attack that big state, especially due to historical ties with Austria, and wouldn't see AH as a threat. Russia, at that time, wouldn't consider attacking Poland (considering Poland as part of AH empire), since Germans didn't start the war (in this scenario). If Russia had interest, than it was south parts (Black sea area), weather because of richness of natural resources or/and big crops flatlands. But should not be forgotten that Russia didn't have modern army at that time (their army was vast in numbers, but not modernized; shouldn't be forgotten fact that todays USA gave huge logistic and equipment help to Russia during WW2, in so called "loan and lease agreement" - in this scenario that doesn't happen), so it is reasonable to assume that Russia wouldn't risk by attacking anyone, thinking through that timeline, and it would be easily assumed that WW2 wouldn't happen, at least not nearly in this extent as it was...
It wasn't a given that AH would disintegrate, which only happened because it lost WW1. The UK at the same time consisted of four countries, and while most of Ireland left shortly afterwards, 100 years later, the UK still consists of three and a quarter countries.
it ended bcs it sucked, they werent trying to modernize, they kept absolutism and wanted it to continue and oprress minorities with minimum autonomy. It offered some level of autonomy last months of war. If Karl offered it in 1916 many of the czechs, slovaks croats, poles .... would be satisfied and stopped fighting against it, but it tried to control it completly but ended up with loosing it completly.
Interesting ideas. I've been interested in Austria-Hungary since I first stumbled across it in history class decades ago. It's an intriguing puzzle, for which there doesn't seem to be a workable solution. By WW1, the Empire was such a multi national mess that it was unsustainable. The turmoil within the Empire and the Balkans was a direct cause, or at least a significant factor in setting off WW1. If there had been some way to solve the Austria-Hungary problems, perhaps WW1, as well as subsequent WW2, could have been prevented. So if I had been in charge, what would I have done? In essence, I'd have had a yard sale of various territories. I'd give the majority Italian areas to Italy, with a joint treaty that Italy would forever recognize the new border, and Austrian control or access to Trieste so Austria would have a port on the Mediterranean. These areas are relatively small, and would not be much of a loss, especially if I can secure Austria's southern border. I'd let Croatia become it's own independent country, with Bosnia thrown in. This would extract Austria from the Croatian/ Serbian conflict. Let Croatia war with it's southern Slav cousins, while Austria gets to stay out, maybe only offering occasional military supplies as support to Croatia. It would be best to cut loose the Ukrainians of East Galicia, the Poles of West Galicia, and the Slovakians to form their own separate nation states, or in the case of the Poles and Ukrainians to join with ethnically similar neighboring territories. The Hungarians and Romanians would have to come to some sort of mutually agreed upon division of their intermingled lands, but again, Austria could remain out of the conflict. This would leave the German/Austrian areas, the Czech lands of Bohemia and Moravia, and Slovenia. Both the Czechs and Slovenians are the most westernized of the Slavic people, and easiest to accommodate or assimilate. In addition, I would promote a vast resettlement of the scattered German people throughout the Eastern lands, encouraging them to move to the the remaining core of smaller, but more compact Austria. The new Austria would consist of the combined area of modern Austria, Tyrol, Czech Republic, and Slovenia.
So you would almost completely dissolve the empire? Also the remaining ethnicities would probably rebel after seeing that they are the only ones that didn't get freedom.
I believe you meant to say, _Jagiellonian_ regarding Poland, not Jagiellian. Also, mentioning the threat of armed Hungarian nationalism in the AH Empire without even mentioning _any_ of the three wars of Italian independence the House of Savoy, the later Kingdom of Italy, _actually_ fought against the AH Empire is surprising.
The Habsburgs were good, devout catholic leaders. Looking back, a united states concept with us Croatians and Austrians would have been good. Our royal bloodline married into the Habsburgs, the heir is alive and well, racing in f3, he was baptised in Zagreb, Ferdinand Zvonimir Habsburg. One can dream 🤣
19:00 ; I disagree with the map in regards to Germany making any colonial expansions into the Americas. Any attempt to do so would lead to war with the United States due to the Monroe Doctrine. Plus the US since 1917 on words has/would be able to maintain absolute Naval superiority over any attempt by Germany. If Germany doesn't go to war with the Western European powers, Switzerland and Arabia would be the only plausible colonial choices.
@Marechal Zolotoy ; I never said the US was forced to abide but they'd chose to intervein. If the territorial conquest was halfway across the world like China then yes, sanctions. But the US considers the Western Hemisphere to be it's domain and as decades pass, increasing unwilling to share or bend to Eurasian powers. There's also the fact that the POTUS of the time, F.D.R., had a personal distaste of Hitler's Germany.
An alternative to simply Wilson's hand, I'd say the allies could've had a vested interest in keeping the Austrian Empire united to contain communism. Through that, it's likely that they'd be able to offer proper support to the whites in the Russian civil war, avoiding the rising of the USSR altogether.
We can make the following timeline: Ferdinand is shot, heavy injured, but survives. That would enrage the population enough, that a war would break out.
Wouldn't this proposal of a United States of Greater Austria during the war piss off Italy, Serbia, and Romania since they had claims on their lands or would they just accept it since the alternative would be the animosity of the entire Entente, including the US?
Oh it'd 100% piss off those 3, but then again IRL they already angered italy by only giving them Zara, Istria, and South Tyrol, Romania I'd say would have little say in it given they got destroyed and only joined the day before the armistice, and as for Serbia... well it wouldn't be the first time the entente reneged on a promise.
A federation would solve the ethnic conflicts, but the Empire would decline in power through this decentralization and become unstable again and the states would break away. I see the Trialist idea of an Austria-Hungary-Croatia as the better option because all the other different peoples would probably get autonomous regions within the Empire, but only Austria, Hungary and Croatia serving as actual entities. The best version of Trialism is the suggestion made by Dr Nikola Bjelovučić, who suggested following territories for each entity: Austria / Lands of the Imperial Crown: - German Austria - Bohemia and Moravia - Galicia Hungary / Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen: - Hungary - Transylvania - Slovakia and Zakarpatia - Bachka, Baranja and Banat Croatia / Lands of the Crown of Zvonimir: - Croatia-Slavonia - Dalmatia - Bosnia and Herzegovina - Istria and Rijeka - Slovenia - Trieste Territories like Trieste, Vojvodina, Podrinje etc. would enjoy certain autonomy within the three entities. Anyways, nice video
To bi čak i funkcioniralo, mada bi bilo bolje da je Austrougarska anektirala Srbiju i onda napraviti Srpsko-Hrvatski entitet unutar nje. To bi tada funkcioniralo.
Just a question What would happen to srem? You say bachka, banat and baranja would be hungary and Vojvodina autonomous but srem was part of croatia if I remember correctly
Fun fact:During the WW1 Austria-Hungary offered the Croatians in the empire to form Austria-Hungary-Croatia, but they declined because they wanted to unite with serbs
That's not quite true because A-H wasn't allowed to exist anymore. It was an option but it came very, very late as the war ended and nations were tired and hungry. Besides the unification with Serbia was done through trickery and terror/ assassination that followed very soon.
@@vedranvukovic7 It's not true because it was never offered like that, what was offered was a confederation to all of slavic nations including Croats but it was all too late because the Antante powers have already carved up the Empire on paper and deals were sealed.

Croats had their terms one of the key being that Dalmatia and Bosnia fall directly into the Croat Kingdom which Hungarians wouldn't accept and neither did Austrians at first because of pressure from Germany cause they still believed they could win the war. Any proposal that came from the Slavs that gave them authonomy Hungarians would reject despite Austrians as time passed were willing to listen. In the end Emperor Karl broke and was willing to accept a confederation of seven states but that was rejected by all Slavs, not just Croats.

Ferdinand of Austria looks like the human embodiment of the big-brain meme.
IDK how crazy he is he has the answer to if water’s wet
Ironically, he probably was more competent than all current heads of state of all successor states.
In Austria, Ferdinand was similarly nicknamed "Ferdinand der Gütige" (Ferdinand the Benign), but also ridiculed as "Gütinand der Fertige" (Goodinand the Finished).

Alter er hatte einen wasserkopf und hat nur gelitten der arme Mann

Laughs in Holy Roman Empire
I'd argue China didn't last as long as Rome did since the different Dynasties are basically different countries

Czech and Polish are not mutually intelligible. It would be like making a Franco-Italy.

The rather obscure idea that the United States of Greater Austria was sort of a blueprint - among many blueprints - for the EU.
What if Austria-Hungary was made out of chocolate?
It would spontaneously combust
🤓
So you would almost completely dissolve the empire? Also the remaining ethnicities would probably rebel after seeing that they are the only ones that didn't get freedom.
So if the U.S. of Austria would've, we would get an Austrian-centric version of the Intermarium.
What if Cao Cao won at Red Cliffs?
1000th comment 🥳
Great video btw
I believe you meant to say,
_Jagiellonian_ regarding Poland, not Jagiellian.
Also, mentioning the threat of armed Hungarian nationalism in the AH Empire without even mentioning _any_ of the three wars of Italian independence the House of Savoy, the later Kingdom of Italy, _actually_ fought against the AH Empire is surprising.
Its important to remember that when certain parts of the empire formed, such as the kingdom of hungary, the ethnic map looked very different.
Blessed Timeline
The Habsburgs were good, devout catholic leaders. Looking back, a united states concept with us Croatians and Austrians would have been good. Our royal bloodline married into the Habsburgs, the heir is alive and well, racing in f3, he was baptised in Zagreb, Ferdinand Zvonimir Habsburg. One can dream 🤣
mate I'm american and I'm dreaming of it.
there wasn`t any "croatian royal boodline"
Person:Hey where do you live?
Other Person:The USA
Person:Oh so you’re American?
Other Person:No I’m from the United States of Austria
An alternative to simply Wilson's hand, I'd say the allies could've had a vested interest in keeping the Austrian Empire united to contain communism.
Through that, it's likely that they'd be able to offer proper support to the whites in the Russian civil war, avoiding the rising of the USSR altogether.
Thank you for non bias what if’s (:
What if The Warsaw Uprising succeeded?
Laughs in new polish-soviet war/battle
@ElectroPea15 but what if they had nukes
@ElectroPea15 what of they against the Soviet instead of the Germany
"Jagiellonian"
Monsieur Z: Yeah, Jageelian
it would probably be called the Danubian Federation
Part 2 please
What if Austria-Hungary intervened in the Franco Prussian war
What if Monsieur Z was NOT AlternateHistoryHub
A Remake for one of my favorites.
Do a series of videos on Harry Tutrtledoves Southern Victory books.
Germany and America fighting side by side.
The Darksider have you read the series? There are 10 (11 counting the prequel). It gets pretty dark towards the end.
@@thelastwooter Yes, I've read the books, And I found them to be enjoyed. But I didn't like how they basically just coped Nazi Germany near the end.
What if the Netherlands joined world war 1 because of the good relations between the van Oranje-Nassaus & von Hohenzollens?
*F R A N K R IJ K G E K O L O N I S E E R D*
Alright so what if franklin Roosevelt lived for his last term instead of Truman taking it
A federation would solve the ethnic conflicts, but the Empire would decline in power through this decentralization and become unstable again and the states would break away.
I see the Trialist idea of an Austria-Hungary-Croatia as the better option because all the other different peoples would probably get autonomous regions within the Empire, but only Austria, Hungary and Croatia serving as actual entities.
The best version of Trialism is the suggestion made by Dr Nikola Bjelovučić, who suggested following territories for each entity:
Austria / Lands of the Imperial Crown:
- German Austria
- Bohemia and Moravia
- Galicia
Hungary / Lands of the Crown of Saint Stephen:
- Hungary
- Transylvania
- Slovakia and Zakarpatia
- Bachka, Baranja and Banat
Croatia / Lands of the Crown of Zvonimir:
- Croatia-Slavonia
- Dalmatia
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Istria and Rijeka
- Slovenia
- Trieste
Territories like Trieste, Vojvodina, Podrinje etc. would enjoy certain autonomy within the three entities.
Anyways, nice video
To bi čak i funkcioniralo, mada bi bilo bolje da je Austrougarska anektirala Srbiju i onda napraviti Srpsko-Hrvatski entitet unutar nje. To bi tada funkcioniralo.
You refering it as better option only because you Croat. Stick your nationalism to your ashole and go away
Just a question
What would happen to srem? You say bachka, banat and baranja would be hungary and Vojvodina autonomous but srem was part of croatia if I remember correctly
So basically just give autonomy to Croatia and not change anything? Yeah that's a very bad idea.
@@ginjordom6065 it is true, because it happened
@@vedranvukovic7 It's not true because it was never offered like that, what was offered was a confederation to all of slavic nations including Croats but it was all too late because the Antante powers have already carved up the Empire on paper and deals were sealed.
@@ginjordom6065 no, it was proposed to be just a CROATIAN part, with all slavs in it, not a slavic part
@@vedranvukovic7 The triunion was never offered honestly, there were ideas but Austrians and Hungarians especially foolishly believed they can keep on the old status.
What if Hamlin became president after Lincoln instead of Johnson?
