Part 13: • John Salley on LeBron'...
Part 1: • John Salley on Predict...
    --------
In this clip, John Salley spoke about the lack of historical support for women’s sports in America and why leagues like the WNBA don’t have the same cache as men’s sports. He also gave his take on the possibility of an overseas sports league overtaking a traditionally US dominated sport. If the new LIV Golf league created by the Saudis is any indication of what’s to come then it’s clear that foreign leagues have the capabilities of competing with US leagues.

Na, it's because women don't like sports like that. It's just what it is. Men models don't make the same amount of money is women models. It's based on interest. It's business not feelings.

25 years, John.....the WNBA has been supported by the NBA for a quarter century. They can't make it on their own. Their game is sound, fundamentally, but un-athletic, Things could be done (9 foot rim, among other things), but they have proven to be unwatchable. For a LONG time.

No one wants to see women dunking on a 9ft goal man. That would become a side show. The reality, as tough as this sounds, is that women move differently when playing basketball. Their moves can be almost robotic looking compared to the men. It's not like that in soccer, why? idk.. but women look somewhat similar to men when playing soccer. In basketball, it just doesnt translate the same way. It's not as entertaining for that reason. Forget about the rim, when i watch most women do a cross over, it's just ehhh not the same as the men who are much more fluent. Again, thats not with every sport. It's not like that in golf/tennis/soccer, but for whatever reason it is in basketball.

Everything depends on morals of a country, customs, and are people willing to pay. Most countries have stronger ties when it comes to supporting their people even if its not family. America just has so many sports where people get paid millions and unfortunately we are more entice by skill level of whatever sport we have a prefernece for than just supporting anything just because its a sports. If more people started going to nba games its common sense it could generate more revenue, but everything is about trade offs, and at the cost of what other sport that may be in comptetion for revenue. This is the main reason most pro sports in america dont start at the same season, or why big fights usualy dont happen during other big sporting events that people are likely to all watch, because competition is either taking all the customers or they have to split the revenue. America only has more support for our country teams during olympics that it. But americans are more likely in fighting sports compared to other countries to love a fighter from another country than our own if they are good enough, though of course the favor usually goes to a us fighter, but we are more likely because we care more about skill than just loyalty to our own.

This argument of the NBA and other leagues fails to address the infrastructure that the US offers vs other countries. Maybe in 50 years, other countries basketball leagues could rival the NBA, but at this time I do not see this, the same way there is no league that can dominate the EPL. Its just 100 years of history and the fact that game was invented there is just too much to overcome.

    • @harrymic75
      @harrymic75 ปีที่แล้ว

Game invented in England has nothing to do with it. Italian and Spanish leagues were more popular and had the best stars for 20yrs (80s, 90s). It's the marketing and fair play structure of the league that drove competition. That is tv rights deals fair distribution made it more appealing as well as lower teams could buy sufficiently talented players over time to atleast give you more than enough competitive games. Whereas leagues like la liga have three tops teams, individual tv bargaining and lower interest. Nobody cares about the lower teams there and they don't make enough money as Barca and Madrid dominate the lions share of the tv deals. Only a few teams will win in any league but the competitiveness among the other teams made the EPL what it is today.

Can people stop saying that WNBA players should start wearing more revealing uniforms to attract more attention. There are sports like gymnastics, track & field, beach volleyball, and swimming where the women wear revealing uniforms. Those sports will still never be as big as some men's sports. Tennis is different, because those women are individual brands, and I believe they are able to choose what they want to wear. Also with tennis those women have a lot of young girls that look up to them, so I think that they have to watch what they wear because they do not want to send the wrong message to young girls. In the UFC, the women wear revealing clothing, but so do the men, because that is a part of the sport. Women in the UFC are getting more attention, but it is not because of what they are wearing, it is because the product they are putting out has the potential to make a lot of money.

People also said in the comments that they should lower the rim so there could be more dunks, but I also do not think that is a good idea. If you lower the rims than all of the players would have to adjust their shots, which could make all of their shooting percentages go down. They might be able to dunk more, but the overall shooting percentages might go down which would make the overall product worse.

Like i said before the wnba is missing a gimmick. A man could say wrestling is fake meanwhile sold billions of dollars in action figures while 1 wnba team dont even have a iconic team logo. Shows the effort put into the league.

    ‘Soccer always been European’.
Nah Football (what they call soccer in the US…), is not European but worldwide the biggest sport in the world.
Europe got the biggest clubs but the biggest players coming from almost everywhere.
South America, Africa and offcourse Europe.
Only Asia is not catching up with superstar football players.

The WNBA isn't as bad as people make it seem. And honestly you can learn alot from watching them play because they are less skilled. So they have to play alot of team ball. They play more fundamentally sound. It actually helped me learn the game better when I was growing up. Most little kids will benefit more from watching women than men.

      @@afrolore7462 it's not
you just aren't invested in the players and their stories like you are with players like Lebon and Steph because they talk about it everyday on TV.
I have the same challenge in caring about who they are when trying to watch the games. But if I had a daughter I'd pay more attention.
When you think about it European soccer is the best most exciting sport on the planet. (This is common knowledge around the world) But it here in America nobody watched and you wouldn't know is because we don't have vested interest in their athletes in our media.
Soccer isn't boring just like the WNBA isn't boring. You just don't care about the players.
If you had a sister in the WNBA you'd pay more attention I'm sure. Not because the game changed. It's because you'd had a vested interest
