The move is going to take a while: the Athletics don’t expect to be playing in Vegas until the 2027 season, but it does appear certain that woke Oakland is about to lose its third and last major sports franchise…
      After spending years attempting to certify that its new ballpark wouldn’t harm the environment or increase global warming or heighten racial inequalities or offend transgenders or whatever, the A’s have given up and set their sights on the more business-friendly environment of Las Vegas.

    This is eerily similar to the Kansas City A's. Almost as soon as the A's got to KC, the owner sent all the talent packing to his friends in the New York Yankees, then he dies and Charlie O'Finley bought in, talking about wanting to keep the A's in Kansas City, only to quietly peddle the team all over the country, finally moving to Oakland while Kansas City already had plans in place to build new homes for the A's and Chiefs. Really O'Finley was shopping around the Oakland A's to other cities-almost moving to Denver-as early as 1976, so the reality is the A's existence in Oakland has been tenuous at best most of it's history. As a Missourian who supports the Chiefs and Royals, this is not a happy day. KC fans had to watch the Oakland A's win three straight World Series with a team loaded with KC A's players. The Raiders/Chiefs, Royals/A's rivalries are pretty much dead now. Nobody in KC can relate to a rivalry with Vegas. Seeing smaller markets get picked clean by wealthier clubs and watching the small market greedy owners demand new stadiums from broke cities when they are free build their own parks any time they like using their own money is just nauseating.

      Yup! This is why I hate the phrase "small market", because of the way billionaire owners use it to get what they want. Teams are nothing more than a means to an end for them,or a tax write-off,while fans invest themselves personally, financially and emotionally into those teams,only to have these owners move them away. All the while,they cry about how "New York and LA are ruining sports". No! They're greedy, exploiting sacks of shit who also want that kind of money the NY and LA owners make...and,at the end of the day,they're all buddy-buddy with those same "big market" owners they cry about. Obviously the owner has his faults, but this mayor is clueless. This administration has allowed the city and surrounding area to become to become a cesspool of crime which has driven small businesses out. The A's were a treasure that the city took for granted.
    At least the team will now get the love it deserves. I feel bad for the hard-core A's fans that have supported this team for generations. As a Yankee fan I always held the A's in high regard. This mayor is playing the political spin card. They had years to keep both the A's and Raiders in Oakland, but the city politicans in Oakland were the ones that were in the way, that prevented new stadium projects from happening. I dont blame both the Raiders and A's for leaving. The Coliseum is very old and the worst stadium to play in at a professional level. Both the Raiders and A's desperately needed new stadiums in Oakland for years and never got it, so this is the result.

    • @fourthgirl

      The Raiders wanted free land. They didn't want to build on the existing property. City and County were still on the hook for the renovations to the stadium for the Raiders return. Cities do not make money off these teams. It is a myth. Oakland isn't SF, NY, LA. It isn't a destination. The A's org never wanted Oakland. This has been a sham for the last 5 years. They choose a location that could not be developed. Oakland is has a high vacancy for office space. Why would they agree to build more? The A's can go kick rocks. I've been a fan since 1971 and this will be my last year working for this slimy outfit.-

Just look at Atlanta's new ballpark for example and how part of the agreement to build a new ballpark was to also incorporate new community establishments around it.

    • @fourthgirl

      @@SteelRhinoXpress My parents bought our house on 66th Avenue in 1961 (1961-2015). My dad, a sports fan looked forward to the Coliseum development because of the redevelopment of the manufacturing plants and warehouses that were beginning to close in the surrounding area. Fast forward to 2023 and the neighborhood looks exactly the same. Pro Sports gives host cities the "development benefits" routine and the city puts up tax dollars, intrudes on low-income neighborhoods for the benefit of multi-billion dollar corporations. This is why Oakland and Alameda County is still carrying the debt from the 90's renovation for the Raiders return. I know the mostly seasonal jobs that are lost at this complex. Many of the people are my relatives and friends. I see what they go through trying to work at the Giants and Chase Center.

    • @SteelRhinoXpress
      @SteelRhinoXpress ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fourthgirl that was Oaklands failure for not having a good plan in place when they agreed to renovate the Coliseum and took on the debt, but Oaklands failure doesn't mean every other city will fail the same way, because redevelopment has worked in other cities when they built new stadiums and arenas. I'll give you an example. When ppg paints arena was built in Pittsburgh there was an agreement that the mayor would grant 7 casino licenses to build casinos in the city in exchange for those casinos to pay 7.5 million per year to pay for ppg paints arena from 2010 until 2038. So, two things happened as a result of that deal. The casinos not only brought in tax revenue to Pittsburgh, but also funded ppg paints arena's construction cost as apart of the agreement. So that's a prime example of how building a new stadium can bring in not only tax revenue for a city from that redevelopment. But can also pay for the stadium itself from that redevelopment like in Pittsburgh case with ppg paints arena, if done right, without it becoming a debt burden on the city.

    If the Oakland government and or tax payers wanted a new ballpark, they would have mad it happen years ago. This lady is wild.

      She's a new party to the deal. She's only been mayor for a few months. The previous mayor left this deal in a mess.

    It's similar to "White Flight" of the 50's and 60's. Normal people move away from bad behaving people. They don't want to raise families around them. And then we see large businesses doing the same thing. Walmarts and Targets moving out and even sports franchises moving away from horrible people who take and take and give nothing in return.

    So based on the concept art for the stadium, people in the grass area outside can watch the game with a much better view than the ones inside the arena. What would be the point of buying tickets then?

    Libby Shaaf Lost the Raiders, The Warriors, and now the A's. The writing was on the wall. Thank God Shaaf is gone. The current mayor just was put in office but the counsel is a mess.

    Thank the Giants for not allowing the A's to move to the south bay. Now the A's won't even play in CA. I have never been an SF fan nor will I ever be.
