1953 Tonka COE Tow Truck Restoration Metalcraft

  • I purchased this 1953 Tonka COE (Cab Over Engine) Tow Truck off eBay September of 2020. I had been looking for one of these for awhile and finally found one in the perfect shape for a restoration. Overall it was in great shape and only missing the chain. The crank mechanism was broken and someone had soldered some parts onto it. Otherwise, the truck had it's normal dents and dings. Overall a great little restoration project of an original MetalCraft Tonka Toy.

So many of us kids had these and they were given away stored carelessly or left outdoors. My stuff was taken care of. Years ago in the 50s my mom bought me a beautiful Walgreens semi .It was white with dark blue stripes and I had it for years until it was given away. I really enjoy seeing these restorations.

I love watching you restore these old 50s metal toys. Especially how you get the bumpers and wheel hubs to shine like mirrors... but can you get the entire toy to shine like a mirror???

You know it's hard to believe how far Tonka has come. They actually started out making gardening tools during WWII, and in 1946 there was a bunch of surplus sheet steel leftover, so they came up with the idea of making kids toys (a steam shovel and crane at first) using the surplus 20 gauge steel. They were originally Mound Metalcraft, but came up with the name Tonka from their location in Minnetonka, MN. the name Tonka didn't officially change until 1955 when they found the toys were more popular and took over the factory. Pretty cool.

I wish kids still played with these kinds of toys instead of them being hermetically sealed in some collectors’ cases. These kinds of toys used to bring a ton of joy to the kids who first owned them. Now all today’s kids want are cellphones, iPads, Nintendo switches, and the latest electronic gaming systems, that don’t even last anywhere near as long as these gorgeous old toys. They don’t know the joy of having to use your imagination to play with a sturdy, shiny new, metal truck that certainly lasts longer that any of today’s crappy electronics.

Number 1: I love your marble cat!
The beluga whale front of this tower is devine. It screams "I am a big, brawny beast that can handle anything!" You made it a work of art! Your hard work on the rims and tires really set this off! Red color for some reason was the one that used lead to bring out the brightness. So just beware of that fact.

Really bright colors like bright white, yellow and very bright red used lead to make the colors so bright. These days they use titanium dioxide to make the colors bright but in those days it was lead. A few years ago there was a scandal where children’s painted toys from China had lead in the bright colors because it’s cheaper. To be clear it isn’t only those colors that had lead but those more commonly had lead.

OK this is the 2nd video now that I feel cheated. The sandblasting is my favourite part!! I like it better when you show the whole thing being sandblasted it's what calms me

As usual, it is a beautiful restoration. Once again you have shown what a professional you are.

You have discipline, because I would not be able to restore that truck without airbrushing flames down the sides. :)
