    The lawyer should've flagged that right away. It's the landlord's legal responsibility to provide heat, and the baby died from lack of heat, not lack of food, nor from beating.

      A good prosecutor could have made an argument that if it was a repeated problem and yet still left the baby alone in the apartment, then she would share partial responsibility as it could show clear indifference to human life, regardless of whether or not it was her legal responsibility to provide heat.

      And from the child caregiver being denied access to care for the child. The fact that they did that combined with the intentional lack of heating is why they are being booked for murder.

    I love the sense of genuine shock and horror in the lawyer’s voice as she says “the heat was off INTENTIONALLY!?” And the mother’s own reaction of realizing someone basically murdered her baby in the hopes of forcing her to move out was incredible as well.

    The judge admits Turner's history of assault against tenants as evidence. However, Turner co-owns many of Corman's properties and is her live-in boyfriend; making it unlikely he will testify against her. Turner is found guilty, but the trial is ruled a mis-trial due to a mistranslation of the statement given by the Spanish-speaking supervisor of the building. If Turner's history is not admitted as evidence in the second trial, he will not be convicted. Schiff tells Stone to offer Turner a deal in exchange for his testimony against Corman. Stone and Robinette further strengthen their case when they discover that Corman has been bribing a housing inspector. The end of the episode reveals that Turner pled guilty to reckless endangerment, and testified against Corman, who was subsequently convicted of manslaughter.

    Situations like this are so sad.
    Was that mother negligent? Absolutely.
    Is she guilty of murder? I'm not convinced. Circumstances for people with babies and no support (partner) who have to work to earn money to feed the baby... it's just so sad that they have to get to work and can't wait for the babysitter.
    It's just sad when people are under the pump in circumstances like this. :(

    • @jexelbur6872
      @jexelbur6872 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      I don’t think “negligent” is to the accurate word. It’s true she didn’t give the baby as much attention it needed, but it wasn’t out of malice. The mother is most likely just overwhelmed. A single mother, needs to rush to work, can barely find a sitter, and the fact that her apartment is not up to living standards. She has responsibilities as a mother, but she’s stuck between a rock and a hard place.

    • @RadioWaco
      @RadioWaco ปีที่แล้ว +31

      But she wasn't negligent. She had the babysitter (the younger girl they interviewed), but the babysitter got stuck on the subway on that afternoon and then another time she tried to get into the building but the landlord's friend wouldn't let her in.

    • @dmf1301
      @dmf1301 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @@RadioWaco Yes, but the mother is still guilty of negligence because she left house BEFORE the babysitter showed up.
      Legally, you cannot do that. Babies MUST have a guardian with them in the house at all times.
      But, as I said, given that she had to get to work so she could get a paycheque to feed her baby, it's a tricky situation for people like her. That's why I don't think people who leave babies in the house alone and something happens are automatically always guilty of murder. Even though their actions directly caused the death of the baby.
      It's a shades of grey situation, not flat out black or white. :(

    • @dmf1301
      @dmf1301 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jexelbur6872 Which is why I don't think she's guilty of cold blooded murder, which is what people are often charged with when they are responsible for the death of someone.
      However, she absolutely was negligent, because she left the house before the babysitter showed up. That was the wrong thing to do, legally.
      People who bear children have a legal duty of care to ensure they have a guardian with them at all times - parent, babysitter, daycare provider, whoever. But they cannot leave them alone.
      I know that the detectives later discovered all the stuff about the landlord messing with the heat because he was a dodgy jerk... but IF someone had been with the baby when he got cold, they would have taken steps to warm him up. Blanket or whatever.
      That's why you can't leave a baby alone... just in case something happens and you need to help them.

    I can’t imagine how the mother must feel, going from feeling guilty, thinking she killed her child due to negligence, to then feeling shock and anger, realizing that her baby didn’t die because of her, but because of the landlord. And while I didn’t see the whole episode, I imagine the mother’s lawyer went from trying to prove she’s innocent to seeking justice for the death of her baby.

    The early years of this shared universe were the best. Detectives using their brains, their boss supportive of them, the DA's office supportive but also knowing the law. Law 7 Order and Homicide LOTS had great starts. But time went on & the executives butted in. Homicide was ruined by terrible mandates. L&O seemed to become more dramatic with their "ripped from the headlines" plots(which altered the real cases so much, why bother?). They go through 4 or 5 suspects before getting to the real one, for drama.
    These days SVU is more focused on inter-character drama over the cases. Chicago PD either has everyone being Batman borderline breaking the laws & being action heroes. Chicago Med had doctors that are unqualified & patients arrested so often no sane person would go to that hospital. The characters scream "woke" now whenever they do not get their way.
    Times change, I suppose... the modern day SWAT remake has an extremely high body count whereas the 1976 version killed less per season than the new one does per episode. No one wants Columbo, they want John Wick.

      @dmf1301 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, I love SVU, but I'm not so much into the inter-character dramas.
      A little bit is good, so we can see the detectives as people rather than simply define them by their job... for example, we always knew that Eliot had 4 kids (later 5), their names, and that his marriage went through trials.
      And I love that Liv finally got a kid in season 16!
      But just snippets of information, rather than intense focus. Now it's becoming more soap opera drama like, with all the personal stuff. But the public seems to lap that up these days. There was no (or very little) reality TV in the 90s, but these days people are absolutely mad for it! So you have to turn these serial dramas into soap operas in order to bridge the gap between focus on the job and focus on exploiting people for entertainment, and a soap opera like storyline is as close as you can get on a TV serial drama. You can't completely turn it into a crappy reality drama! :p

    I never understood when people say does this person look like a murder. ETC. looks have nothing to do with it. You can talk to someone 10 minutes and get a good idea of any person

    That's a misleading descriptor .... the woman didn't leave her son to freeze .... she left her son to go to work, and he wasn't always left for any length of time.
