I have a matrix with ZZ-GE that the throttle body idels high in the morning up 2000 to 2200, after i cleand it awhile back ans sometime when driving and coming to a stop it Idels high and need to step on the acelerator so it idels normali (1000 rpms).. do you know what can be causing it? thanks

      Maybe your throttle cable is sticking when you release the pedal and come to a stop.

    What is the smaller hose that is with those two hoses that goes into the intake box? Do I have to purchase all three of these hoses at the same time? I can't find a part number for just that hose

      I wouldn't recommend bypassing the pcv system.

  • @aszilagyi100
    @aszilagyi100 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would’ve added a few items to your description. Your arrows are correct when the throttle is closed and there is vacuum in the intake manifold.
    But you did not mention what happens when the throttle is open, and there is low, vacuum or nearly atmospheric pressure after the throttle valve .
    In low vacuum situation’s the air actually goes in opposite directions than your arrows ! Still providing control over the blow-by pressure buildup in the crank case!
    This may actually be the most important part of the PCV system, as the crankcase pressure is higher at larger throttle, opening positions inside the crank case and valve cover .

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that this details seems really important to you in theory, but, in practice, the real intent of this video is to help people with diagnosing their vacuum leaks that result in a fuel system lean condition and a CEL. So whatever is going on at high load is not really relevant and would only serve to confuse people. Besides, if you know so much, why are you even looking at this video? Trolling? LOL.

    why when installing a turbo the instructions are to cap the throttle body hose and vent to atmosphere the intake pvc hose?

    Didn't cover how the crankcase vents to the valve cover in the first place. Is it the vent tube on the intake side of the valve cover? The one Toyota calls No. 1 ventilation tube?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That tube on the intake side running down near the alternator is unique to the 2zz. 1zz does not have it. No idea why Toyota (or Yamaha) felt it was needed on the 2zz engine but not the 1zz. There are block-off/delete kits available for this tube. As with anything there are mixed opininons on using them. I have no opinion on this one way or the other. The crankcase gases vent to the valve cover "in the first place" through the oil drainback galleys. The external tube seems to be an "enhancement."

    My 1nzfe is turbo'd. currently I have both the breather and pcv connected to the inlet side to the turbo, also on the inlet side of the maf. If I understand you I should have my breather open(not in the inlet) and the pcv connected to the inlet?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes usuall arrangement for turbo is breather going out to a catchcan or atmosphere, and pcv going to a vacuum source on the manifold for suction, but with a checkvalve to avoid pressurizing the crankcase under boost.

    Where did you get the Lotus Performance Valve cover shield?

  • @DougHinVA
    @DougHinVA 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    it's geeky but the old rubber lines do get stiff and crack or split. So replace them with new ones that match. Clean the PCV and MAFS sensors with suitable spray for each and it is easy to do. Clean thoroughly or replace the 2 devices. A rough idle or rough running and poor acceleration/power can be from a leaking intake manifold gasket. Cheap to buy and simple to replace. Getting the connections to the manifold and related parts removed is best left to a skilled guy and just pay him for the work.

    What prevents oil from coming out of the breather tube and into the intake during boost on this engine? My intake had about a half quart of oil inside of it when I took it out.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The internal baffling of the valve cover might catch a little bit of oil but when you have a boosted engine you need to use catch-can on the breather or vent it out.

    • @amenen01
      @amenen01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Merryfrankster_ My engine is not boosted. I think a large amount of blow-by is causing the intake to fill with oil. What else could cause so much oil going into the intake?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@amenen01 k I dont understand why you said boost when no boost but never mind maybe you were just babbling like a baby. There are two things that can cause your issue. One is the pcv valve itself is bad. Replace it and be on your way. Two is the air-oil separator under the valve cover is bad. This is a common occurrence in lotsa cars including Toyota's. If you owned a porsche 996 you would know all about this and you would be on the hook for 2500. For your mighty grocery getter just purchase a new valve cover - I mean the entire valve.cover aluminium piece not just the gasket - from salvage and be on your way.

    • @amenen01
      @amenen01 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Merryfrankster_ I meant to say under acceleration, not boost. Do you think a salvage valve cover will work or will it have the same problems with the air-oil separator. I have seen people install a catch can that vents to the outside and plug the ports on the intake.

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video. One question: when fitting an oil catch can in closed loop to a 2ZZ, presumably only a single catch can is required on the PCV valve hose to the inlet manifold? As the larger return line from the TB is only fresh/clean air right?

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Correct. This is true for naturally aspirated engines. If you did put a catch can on the breather line, it would never catch any oil, despite what anyone says about air flow reversion under high load. However, on boosted engines, anything goes.

  • @davidroth4123
    @davidroth4123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should mention that at high power levels (throttle open) flow goes the other way in the breather hose

    • @Merryfrankster_
      @Merryfrankster_  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If this were the case you would at some point find some oil residue or carbon residue in the breather and I never have ever in any healthy engine that I've ever looked at - I've looked at a few. Ha ha. If your engine is spewing stuff out of there, you have a problem that needs fixing.

    • @davidroth4123
      @davidroth4123 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Merryfrankster_ You will find that happens in a healthy engine that spends a lot of time a near full power. If the engine has a good built-in oil separator on the blowby side you will see very little oil in the vicinity of the air cleaner. The Breather tube is designed to flow that direction at full power and the pCV pipe is too small to handle all the blowby flow at full power. Blowby flow rate is proportional to power output. I have been an engine engineer for the past 35 years.

      @davidroth4123 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Merryfrankster_ OK, but consider this; if you run an engine on the dyno at full power and then clamp shut the breather hose, you will pressurize the crankcase and oil will leak out from the crank seals. you can even blow out a seal.
