  • The fun of the 2zzge engine is when the CAM Lift kicks in at 6,000 rpm. Mine is only working intermittently and that needs to be fixed.
The next thing to replace is the Oil Control Valve OCV to get the MR2 Spyder screaming again.

This was an absolute masterclass in how to work in confined spaces! Congratulations on your persistence! I might try replacing mine.....nervous twitch....

Like any moving part, they will fail eventually. I bought a newer used 1zz and replaced most of the attached parts and sensors before installing. There isn't much room in that bay to work without removing the engine, so I figure replace before fail. on the 1zz this is otherwise known as the VVTI solenoid and is on the passenger side kind of behind the alternator, next to the intake manifold (for those with the stock engine). Glad you got your lift back! Keep up the good wrenching.

Been watching through your MR2 series here and I envy you southern guys and your lack of road salt. It must be nice not having to use a torch and cheater bar on everything to get it apart ;-) Would make working on cars a lot more fun I'm sure!

Having lived up North I know exactly what you are talking about. This Toyota is so clean it has been a joy to wrench on.

    Is the MK3 a ZZ1 or ZZ2?

The MK3 Supra is a completely different engine. There were several different models. You will have to look that up.

maybe under oil pressure load the solenoid behaves differently?

I agree. Something was just not right about that part when in use.

Wow, you are really careless with that wire that is hooked up to your battery (probably without a fuse) at 3:20

A little but it was a broken part so I was not all that worried and luckily had no issues.
