    Capcom had lightning in a bottle imo. If they had gone back and redid the games that initially missed out on the 4MB RAM expansion, they could have really put their earlier ports to shame.

      @@ssfn1_SOTN was a game that was made for the PS1 first, meaning it was a 3D GPU accelerated game made to look 2D like everything done now is, then ported to the Saturn without changing anything that would’ve needed to be altered and/or optimized for it to be good. Had it been done proper it would’ve been fine. Gradius Gaiden, were it ported to the Saturn that way, would’ve suffered the same fate for the exact same reasons. On the flipside, Mega Man 8 was brought to both systems and yet the Saturn version in that case was superior, with raster effects that took advantage of the Saturn’s actual 2D rendering capability, extra stage content, and better sounding instruments in its music. Then there’s the fact that practically every single 2D arcade port was better on the Saturn. And that’s before we even discuss the RAM cartridge.

    Still one of my favorite games in the marvel/capcom bunch, if not my favorite period. The rest went on to become far too chaotic, whereas the fighting was much more focused here. Also, the whole design in this game was just splendid, and the gems were a fantastic variable that were absent in every other game, until MvC Infinite. I just ADORE this game, and while it was a bit inferior, i LOVED having it on my PSX.

      I wouldn’t call it a landslide. The only way the Saturn got the extra character animation was through the RAM cart. While the backgrounds are better than PS1, the slowdown is about just as bad, sound is still sped up and compressed, and the loading is worse. Basically, this never got a good home port up until the 360/PS3 and this year.

    Sehr gut. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the PS1 ports of games such as this and Children of the Atom tremendously. They all play a little different but the visuals and details are a sad reality that divides attention given to any one game. I am certain you've caught and noticed many differences during your examinations. Some details I noticed missing between the PS1 port and arcade are:
    - Thanos destroying the background of his stage when he uses his power super (big orange ball that has slight tracking abilities if you try to super jump it)
    - Dr. Doom stage having more detail as you move further along. I'm sure other stages have details I never noticed when I had visited the game years ago.
    - The start / select button used for the reality gem. Different colours and different icons that dizzy you quickly.
    - Not a different detail but it's something many people tend not to notice. Electricity on an opponent reduces their meter but drains very fast if you do manage to dizzy and spiral someone as they fall.

    Technically both the Saturn and PS1 were much more powerful than CPS2. The main issue with consoles of that time was their storage medium, and the fact that those systems couldn’t just pull data off the discs like the arcade game and consoles before it could do with their ROM boards or cartridges. Saturn and PS1 for this reason were limited to however much work RAM they had, and because it was only 2MB a game could load at once on both systems (aside from Saturn RAM cartridge expansion), sacrifices had to be made. Had both systems been able to run the game off a cartridge ROM with enough storage like say the N64 or anything before it, this would’ve been a totally different scenario.

      Also, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter was the start of the Marvel animation cuts of the arcade games, so it kinda gets a leg up in that regard, not to mention that the backgrounds are also simpler.

    I remember ordering the Japanese import for Sega Saturn from retailer NCS based in NY. I was so disappointed with all the slow down despite how gorgeous the game looked. • @HellTantrumbull
      @HellTantrumbull 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This game came before the 4mb cart was out. where capcom messed up is they didn't delay the game until the cart was out and then program it to work with it.
      If they had just delayed the game and waited for the 4mb then all frames of animations could have been there and there wouldn't be any slowdown and this could have been the best home port for the time..

    I find the Saturn version suffers from the same slowdown regardless of whether you use the extra RAM or not. It’s too bad because this is a great arcade fighter. One wishes the 4MB cart would have been used here. A rare misstep for Capco.

    • @HellTantrumbull
      @HellTantrumbull 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the reason for the 1MB instead of 4MB is because of timing with development. this game and X-Men vs Street Fighter did come out the same year but the 4MB cart had just come out and capcom just kept at it with the 1MB instead of delaying the game while they put the extra work time with the other game so it could use the 4MB to keep all frames and keep the tag team since it provided enough space.

      Compared to the arcade version, neither are a win. The Saturn version, especially without the RAM cart is only really better with backgrounds. Beyond that, they perform about the same which is TERRIBLE, the sound is equally as appalling, and the Saturn’s load time is longer.
