  • While the MTA says on-time performance is the best it has been in four years, often when trains are delayed, signal problems are to blame. So how is the MTA working to speed up service? CBSN New York's Marcia Kramer reports.

    Get rid of the antiquated block signal system and do what Japan does with their bullet trains (Automatic Train Control).

    • @joshkarpoff3341
      @joshkarpoff3341 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They have to replace the entire 100+ year old signaling system that is fixed block signal only, for over 1,370km of track, that is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. You can't just do that overnight and that will cost several hundred Billion dollars, which when the politicians argue over spending a million dollars on something important, makes it very difficult to make happen. The conservatives generally hate all mass transportation travel and refuse to spend any money on it. The liberals aren't good at budgets and don't tend to build solid coalitions, so they don't get much accomplished. The MTA inherited a system that was in serious disrepair after decades of neglect by the original private companies that built it before they went bankrupt and then the local city government was broke for most of the 20th century and was barely able to do basic maintenance, let alone major systems improvements. So yes, they would love to have a modern signal system, but it's not going to happen over night. It took them nearly 20 years to get it installed on the most simple 8% of the system.

    Fix the so called 5 express train along the Eastern Parkway Line between Franklin Ave and Atlantic. How many times have people reached the same time either at Atlantic Ave or Franklin with taking the local 2/3 train? Makes no dam sense. Also get rid of that bottle neck at President St 2 train riders

    • @egolono10
      @egolono10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's probably caused by train traffic, not faulty signals. When ridership is high, you need lots of trains. A high number of trains means that they'll get caught up behind each other at switch points like Franklin Ave, where there are 3 different directions the trains can go and the lines cross over each other so only one or two can proceed while the others have to wait behind them.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Raoul Simon Two solutions for this problem exist:
      1.) Rebuild the interlocking to have flying junctions
      2.) Add new switches along the Eastern Pkwy and New Lots Line. Ideally, it would be easier to install new switches on the elevated structure between the middle pocket track and both of the local tracks. With this, and a new Utica Avenue Subway, we can implement these changes:
      (2) to Flatbush Avenue
      (3) along Utica Avenue
      (4) (5) to New Lots Avenue

      YT Young Yadiel A good idea is to build new connections between the Broadway Line and the Fulton Street, then from the Fulton Street Line to the Jamaica Line. From there, the R would run to Euclid Avenue and the W would take over the J route to Jamaica Center. The R and W would also run on a rerouted Astoria Line and the N moves to the Second Avenue Subway. To replace R service on Queens Blvd, a K train route would operate via Queens Blvd Local and 8th Avenue Local, moving the M to 63rd Street and allowing the C to go express and swap with the D north of 59th Street.
