    Why not just use vacuums and brushes to disturb/dislodge the stuff? Why bother messing around with magnets, and weighing your findings, other than to generate statistics.... If the metallic stuff isn't good for it, neither can the dust and other non-metallic stuff, so just go in there with powerful vacs, brushes, jets of compressed air, and what not to dislodge the stuff and get moving along the way. If magnets and collecting and separating the metallic pieces is crucial, put the magnets on the machinery to collect and hold the prized material while the vacuum takes away the rest.

    • @sonicboy678
      @sonicboy678 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The idea is to stop simply going in there and clearing the stuff away.

      Stan Patterson I agree but there is dust UNDER it could still effect the IJ so they have to hand clean it and some times the vacuum does not pick up all the dust

    • @SportyMabamba
      @SportyMabamba 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Non-conductive dust or debris (such as human skin cells, paper, etc) won’t trouble an IJ as it can’t carry voltage across the insulator. The metallic debris will bridge the electrical gap and cause the track block to falsely show as occupied.
      Hence, magnets to remove the troublesome metal bits.

      The New York City Subway System has always operated in an independent manner. I don't believe that CBTC is the answer as that technology is for new and simple systems. With all of the complexities in the subway system, CBTC could become a liability. The existing fixed block system would work more efficiently (as it always had) if more money was put into it and unnecessary signal timers were taken out.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blake McNamara Nobody is making the parts for the existing fixed block system anymore, even if more money were poured into the system. CBTC is the new norm, and are not only pushing full steam ahead for full installation on the other lines, they are also testing out something called Ultra Wide Band Signaling to further expedite installation. Everyone else in the world has CBTC, so why not NY?
      Plus CBTC does work here on the NYC Subway. We have two lines that currently have the system: the 7 line, which just got it installed in 2018, and the first installation on the L line, which is undergoing tunnel renovations at this time. Both lines have very high on time rates due to the CBTC signal system installed. This has resulted in additional trains for each line, all with NO accidents.
      Another benefit of the CBTC installation is resilience to weather. The example here is the Canarsie Installation, where the transponders on the tracks (which are apart of the installation) have withstood being submerged in salt water for a week and a half to two weeks. The aforementioned tunnel repairs is not for the CBTC system, but rather the concrete cable channels, which are rotting from within due to the salt water. The repair project does include new power substations to let the CBTC system run more trains on the growing Canarsie Line after the cables are fixed. The Ultra Wide-band system will also include weather protections.
      These are examples on how a CBTC system will work for the rest of the NYC Subway system.

    • @TheRailLeaguer
      @TheRailLeaguer 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blake McNamara No why? What’s your deal? What don’t you like about a new CBTC system that will actually reduce delays in the whole system?
