The MTA on Thursday debuted a new version of its modern R211 subway cars -- one that features what is known as an "open gangway," allowing passengers to move freely from one car to another.
The agency had invested $2.5 billion in new subway cars, and the ones that started to roll out Thursday account are part of that project. They debuted on the C line in Upper Manhattan, which officials say was a purposeful choice.

It’s hard to implement this on an ancient system. Even the London Underground has had difficulty doing so. These trains had to go through almost a year and a half of testing to ensure that it was even viable to have these sets on tracks with the tight radii the NYC subway has.

Relax.... They used to do this open gangway thing in NYC back in the days by leaving all the walkway doors open when the AC didn't work. 😄 The only difference is now there's more space & they have an Accordion section...

This is great to see NYC modernize their subway. Los Angeles Metro will also get open gangway subway trains in 2024 to replace their 30 year old trains. They are currently being tested.
Toronto has subways like this and I actually quite like it. It gives you much more space to stand

Rome and Paris (and London and every other major European capital) have been invaded recently by hordes of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa, like New York and other American cities were invaded by 'great migrations' from the South in the mid-20th century. And now they all have high crime rates. What a coincidence.

0:36 So over a messily 7% more room. Way less commuters can now find seats. You immediately loose 8 seats at the end not to mention 4 more in the middle since the doors are so wide (12 seats in total are gone per car). 120 seats in total It’s just ridiculous.

It’s hard to do this on old subway systems. Even the older London Underground lines don’t have these yet. It’s easy to say that when you have a nice new system built on the techniques of older systems like the NYC subway

Can't believe that even with the new train, the chime alerting you to closing doors still sounds _as_ the doors close, instead of chiming just _before_ that happens. A nitpick perhaps, but bizarrely inefficient
Who needs to hear that when the train and/or conductor always announces “Stand Clear of the Closing Doors please”? Signature NYC MTA line.
@@shaheemhanley9055 You're right about that being a signature NYC MTA line--thanks for the reminder. However, the intercom speakers are not always working or heard well from the door, but if I remember correctly, the chime sounds at each and every door. Secondly, there are lots of people, tourists or otherwise, who might not have enough of a grasp on English to catch the meaning of that signature line in time.
@@shaheemhanley9055 Something that I think is unnecessary in many instances and, unless there's a delay, rarely means that the doors are closing in the next 2 seconds. So it's just noise pollution. I agree with the original commenter (and they make a good point about a universal visual and auditory warning that is more easily understood by non-English speakers.)
Even LIRR, Metro-North, and PATH have door chimes a couple seconds before the doors actually close, with the former two not featuring a "doors closing" announcement at all.

It's a good idea for most cities, just not New York because NYC doesn't enforce a no homeless policy on it's metro system like every city in Europe & Asia does.
I don't like these new train cars. When there's a crazy person get on the train. I normally move to the next car. Where am I going to go now?😢

And if you’re in a train where the end door is locked like the trains that are on the B, D, N, Q & most of the A & C, then your ass is grass anyway. At least if something like that were to happen, you can run freely without worrying about falling in between cars, others will see it and might even help you & there are cameras in the cars, so the video can go to the cops & they will eventually see what’s happening to find the perp. You’re much more secure in an open gangway train than you think, but if you want to continue to imagine wild & crazy thought & be scared in the process, then that’s all on you.

If the journalist won't be skeptical, I have to be my own journalist. This report plays like a puff piece. Now we won't be able to get away from the smelly panhandler in the other car. That fragrance can travel the length of the train, like the lunatics I change cars to get away from during my commute.

In Moscow we have open gangway trains since 2014 and semi-open since 2003
I guess you won't be able to pee in between the cars anymore, but it'll stink from the front to back now with the homeless issue.
im in ottawa which has much smaller trains with the same thing, we too have a homeless problem, you can just walk to the next car.

I like the old trains because when somebody poops or pees on the train, only one car is affected. This is major consideration
These new trains still have an old fashioned look compared to the new Sydney Metro where the carriages blend together

Sydney had open gangway in 1988 with Tangara trains.
All well and fine. How about also fixing the signal and related issues: loss of third rail power, etc., that continue to plague the system, causing delays? How about installing elevators at the 53rd and 59th Streets-Lexington Avenue station; while they're at it, how about keeping the existing elevators in operable condition as well. Surely, this is not too much to ask of an agency with such a massive budget as the MTA.
The MTA is working on all these issues. They can do more than 2 things at once you know
The MTA is not one monolithic entity. Also, you have to remember that not all entrances, elevators and escalators are owned by or maintained by transit. Some are handled by private entities, especially when built as a tax or zoning benefit.

And those trains in London from 2017, they were in service around 2009/2010 so even longer of a gap!
I’m not seeing the wild amount of homelessness in London that I’m seeing here. This in no manner enhances the experience. It traps the whole car in a toilet.

I understand the sensational nature of the news cycle, but it's important to provide context. Historically, New York's first gangway cars were introduced in 1923, with various models offering gangway and articulation options until 1965. Therefore, the introduction of gangways in the R211T represents more of a reintroduction to the US market rather than a completely new concept.
Were they named in honor of the gangs who jump the turnstiles?
No. Gangway has always been a railroading term.
Just for marketing purposes......another word other than "gang" might have been better. Walkway, thru-way, etc. Could still change the name.....but doubt they'll do it.

With 1 homeless person on the train, you'll smell it on every angle. If theres a person you don't wanna be around, you now CANT get off on the next stop and switch carts. So this is literally, horrible. This is stuff devised by people who do not take the train and deal with these issues.

Toronto's Line 1 (circa 1954) has been using an open gangway design since July 2011. And they are certainly far more attractive.

Toronto (TTC) has had these trains for more than 12 years now on lines 1 and 4. They’re the TR-1 series from Bombardier - Toronto Rocket trains.
I wish Line 2 could have it.

The new New York subway car, the R211, was manufactured by Kawasaki Heavy Industries of Japan, while the Boston Orange Line MBTA 1400 and 1900 were manufactured in China. If you have ridden both, is there a difference?

@@White_sox_fan oh yeah, 100%, I was on the CTA and got delayed because a subway surfer got struck when entering a tunnel. Red line was diverted through the loop for a while.

It’s amazing to C that the C line went from oldest fleet to newest fleet in under 5 years!
@breadandcircuses8127 Basically it was until 2019-2020 when the C had R32s (some of the oldest fleet), and then in 2024 the C gets some of the newest fleet; the R211Ts. Of course between the old R32s and new R211Ts the C has carried fleet of R46s and R179s. And of course you’ll C that I used some puns about the C train. C what I’m talking about?

2.5 billion dollars, really? We all know they are not replacing 100% of the fleets that are currently operating. They seriously need an audit. The public should have the rights to see how these funds are spent. Freaking crazy..
Of course they’re not replacing everything. No single order can ever replace the thousands of different subway cars, especially with the differences between the numbered and lettered lines. Instead, these are targeting the last of the old fleet built in the 1970s.
That information is 100% available if your cared to look at it.
You think $2.5 billion is too much for an order of about 1,200 cars (and about 400 more potentially if they accept the second option order)? How much do you think it should cost? How does it compare to other cities?
And why should MTA replace the entire fleet at once? Only small agencies with a few hundred cars or less do that, but more than half of our fleet is still fairly recent and we're still getting our money's worth out of those. Plus, there are more new trains in this order than there are of the oldest cars to replace, which should help run better service. Or do you think current service is adequate and MTA should prioritize fleet renewal more?

The Triplexes had a passageway between each articulating section, so this isn't entirely new. I hear these cars will be assigned exclusively to local lines such as the C. But they're still not the R-10s.:)
We've had that kind of connection on trains in rural Denmark for 20 years. I wonder how NYC of all places haven't caught up.

NYC is so overrated especially by Europeans.....I think people see it in movies & shows & automatically think it's some magical paradise when in reality, it's the dirtiest, rudest, grittiest city in the world not to mention its infrastructure is decades behind most other cities of its size & stature.

If MTA decides to buy more of them, we likely won't see them until 2027, after about a thousand of these cars with the regular doors in between the cars have been delivered. (Yes, this is part of a massive order.)

Here in Brazil this type of train with open gangway has been around for over 20 years while NYC did just start thinking about having this type of train now? Let's compare these trains with the 200 series, for example, which are from my city, the R211 don't bring absolutely nothing new to the table maybe wider doors or a better traction system but nothing too significant

I get it...the open cars system gives all riders equal access to the odors created by the unwashed & mentally ill, marijuana/cigarette smoke, and free passage of viruses throughout the train. More money being wasted by the MTA.
How does one now put safe separation between themselves and someone following them? At least in locked cars one can run to the next car then run off to escape. But dang then one may need the open car to also run. Smh, idk. Either way NYC need a cop on EVERY train. And they have enough to do so. Mayor Dinkins did just that in the 90s.

The Moscow subway has had these kinds of trains for years. The NYC subway has finally caught up. Wait, I take it back, it is not even close. Where are the cellphone charging outlets on every seat, like in Moscow subways? Not to mention, the NYC subway looks like CR*P compared to the Moscow subway.

NYC and London are both years behind Toronto Canada, We've had open gangway trains since 2008/09. This is nothing new to me.
London actually got them from 2009 onwards on the Metropolitan Line. However with the amount that had to be ordered for 4 lines, it did take until 2017 to deliver the final examples for the District Line
Don’t forget that in that time Bombardier Derby would have been busy building lots of commuter EMUs for the rest of the country and a few DMUs as well
