As a train operator from the opposite coast, this is one of - if not - the worst situations we do not want to be in. Also, we do not condone people pulling the emergency handle just for either giggles or for realizing that they missed a stop for any reason, unless there’s really an emergency.
Passing a red signal is very serious on railways. There is a reason it is called a "danger" signal. Now the job of the NTSB will be to provide recommendations to avoid further signals passed at danger.
Curious to know their SOP. Sounds like a restricted speed violation. You should always have more than one way to communicate and stop the train, especially during a shoving move. Sounds like another train should have tied on. Tunnels are infamous for dead spots on the radio and handhelds are horrible. Were the buzzers not working? If you cannot put a train into emergency from the end you are shoving, you shouldn’t make the move. Let’s see what the report says.
Every signal doesn't need a radio contact with another motorman. Every signal is equipped with brake arm. The basics is only one train can present on the section protected by the signal and it's arm. The signal is red, the arm is up and it hits the brake arm on the train automatically if the train try to pass the red signal. If one train is on the section, on the switch, the other signals indicate red. If one train was in the section the signal for the other train must be red, the arm must be up and so on. Why do you talk about the vandals, but not signals? How one train did enter to the section where had already been the another train? Hello from France.
Signals are probably to blame here. The signals are over a century old and are in the process of being upgraded to CBTC. Some of the tripwires are worn as well and not functioning properly.
From what I understand, because they couldn't resent the brakes on the first 5 cars due to the emergency cords being vandalised (in those cars), they turned off the power (to those 5 cars). They then manually released the brakes (first 5 cars) which were then permanently off with no quick way to apply them. This meant they could then use the last 3 cars which still had power, to push the train at slow speed. This was the only way they could move the train quickly to get it out of the way at the start of rush hour. So with only 3 cars being powered they only had 3 cars that could brake all 8 cars of the train. What seems to have happened is they badly under estimated the way this would effect the trains ability to stop. @@Awesome_Aasim
@@dogmannz The focus of the investigation will probably be why the emergency brakes did not trip. Sure someone might have pulled them in one of the trainsets. But if they literally cut the air to the emergency brakes (as opposed to just releasing), which sounds like a really really bad idea, then federal investigators will find that.
The trip arm system does not work when a train with disabled brakes passes a red signal. The trip arm would not have stopped the train until car 6 where the TSS(train service supervisor) was operating.
They should not have moved the train until they had full control of the brakes. The valves can be reset, it sounds like someone was in a hurry to get the train moving and out of the way. Also, if they had gotten back control of the brakes, a trip arm at the red signal would have initiated an emergency brake application even if the operator had not heard the signal to stop,
NYC train communication systems-speakers are the worse I have seen. I never hear anything whenever they make an announcement. Plain OLD communication systems, bad connections, too much noise, or just outdated.
I don't take trains for 4 years !!! Scary !!! To Old , please, build new Subway!! Shame to America!!! Doors always not working well ; stocking inside is terrible! You don't have no water , no toilet ! Absolutely unhumane 😢
This used to happen almost everyday back in the 1970s Koch era a ride on the N that should take 45 minutes took an hour cause of all the times the brakes had to be reset
Always speak to your union when management asks you to do something I guarantee management gonna say we don’t have no idea he did this or that was the supervisor’s decision not ours management never takes blame
Nyc is out of control. You allow people to get off small crimes like cycling on sidewalks, etc. They then move up to subway emergency break pulling, petty, and grand larceny, and the list goes on. Total chaos in the city, it's already at the point of no return.
@SerenityValentineToglia because as a nyc employee you never speak of any accident in public. It opens you and the city to lawsuits . The city is probably trying to blame him so he is coming out . Usually it the union rep that speak for employee in question
You do realize why they are in there right? The conductor is not all seeing, next thing you know someone is stuck being dragged by the train by their backpack loosing their life.
Why is this guy talking with the news its an on going investigation. He just admits he didnt tell them to "Stop" he told them to slow me down, slow me down", "Stop the train."
That front section should have had the PA system and the buzzer still working. Why weren’t they working? Did they electrically isolate the unit?? And if so why?? If you can’t BCO the car from the top then BCO from the bottom of the train to stop the rupture of air coming from the car. Try to use all your means of communication. How can you rely on the radio only???? That was a comedy of errors from an obviously rookie supervisor and crew. None of these guys worked the yards where that experience would have been picked up.
I may have missed it. But why was there a train crossing Alex’s train if there isn’t a train that crosses in front of the 1 train at 96th street. The 1 train is on the local track. Maybe i’m missing something
From my understanding the in service 1 was on the express track (Im assuming to bypass the out of service 1 that was stuck) then after 96 street station (could be before) when the in service 1 train going back on the local track i guess that where both collided. I may be wrong could be the opposite what I wrote. I hope someone who has better knowledge what happened can clarify
The 1 train that was Out of service was on the local track. The one that was IN service (that had the passengers) was EXPRESS, and it attempted to switch from Express to local to head to the 103 St station. If it does not switch, its going to head to Central Park-110 St Station which is on the 2 and 3 line.
This guy needs psychological help if he genuinely thought he was going to be killed by a tiny little ding like this. Yes people got minor injuries but the worst that was going to happen in a low speed collision like this is exactly what did happen. This guy sounds like a paranoid cry baby.
