    Its amazing how New Zealanders seem to think that rugby has to be played on their terms. None of the tactics they are crying about is illegal. In fact they are all very much in line with the rules of the game. Stop concerning yourself with the Springboks game and style of play, no amount of unsolicited advice is going to stop them from executing their game on the day.

      True you are right, they will play their game at the end of the day but their kicking the ball away needlessly was frustrating to watch.

    When South Africa went through a difficult period and getting whipped by the All Blacks, seemingly the rest of the world seemed less vocal about the Springboks' misfortunes. Fast forward two to three years later and suddenly EVERYONE is jumping on the wagon bashing them. England not too long ago played a similar style that brought them a lot of success that culminated in 2003 RWC. Now I'm not excusing the team's performances in the RC thus far and it certainly isn't ideal, but there's a lot to do going forward with this team and how they can get better. The Springboks WILL get better with time. This nonsense of laying the future of rugby at the feet of South Africa must stop. World Rugby should take responsibility for that.

      What World Rugby wants is to turn rugby union into rugby league it seems. Let's get rid of everything that makes union a true contest such as rucks, mauls, line-outs, kicking and scrums. Let's rather turn it into a bore show of players just running at each other. Let's forget about playing styles and tactics or even strengths. Let everyone just run so the rest of the world can stay in awe of the All Blacks since nobody dares try playing their own style of rugby that leads to success because that's not what world rugby wants.

    Fiji and Australia ran at the ABs and got hammered. NZ exploit breakdown loopholes to gain counterattack ball from which they score against ambitious teams. Another way of looking at it is it's the ABs indirectly killing running rugby.

  • @iandenner9557

    The more I listen to JK the more I'm losing respect for him... Ireland trounced them playing basically the same style of rugby, England beat Australia playing basically the same same style, even when Argentina beat them it was with big forwards and kicking! But the moment the AB's don't have it all their way the Springboks are bringing the quality of world rugby down. I'm fed up with these ex players in their ivory towers who keep forgetting that in their day they had a Grant Fox who kicked just as much as modern players. And suddenly JK thinks of himself as a custodian of how rugby should be played?

    Everything the Boks are doing are within the rules of the game. We have different strengths to that of the All Blacks. Why didn't the All Blacks dazzle the crowd with running rugby? I'll tell you why. They weren't given space to just run around and score 5/6 tries. They were met by strong, resolute defence and even dominated in the tackle. The Bok forwards were superior, as they often are and that makes it difficult to get go forward and momentum. Kirwan would love for the Boks to play the run at all cost game and gift them 3 intercept tries in the name of more attractive rugby. The popularity of rugby in SA has grown immensely. We understand the game and we understand our strengths. If Kirwan found a game that was decided in the last three minutes, boring, We'll then, he doesn't understand rugby afterall.

    "A philosophical answer" - are the AB's still rugby players or are they now warrior poets!?
    It's also not attractive watching the AB's coming in from the side at almost every ruck. Unfortunately, they need to fix their OWN set-piece and EARN THE RIGHT to run the ball. Not through manipulating the ref calls. So get your own house in order, and keep your own nose clean, before you criticize this Bok team that leaves BLOOD and GUTS on the field.
    They have been lashing every other team in the world, but don't like that we can challenge, rattle and BEAT them. We KNOW they want to run the ball and find broken play ... that is their strength. Telling us to play to THEIR strengths is absolutely ridiculous - nonsense from JK, showing that he is out of touch.

      yeah, sure, JK's "out of touch"...a bit of a silly comment. Think about it, his full-time job is being a Rugby pundit. He watches analyses and comments on rugby ALL the time. Regardless, it was just his opinion and I bet he echoes most neutrals thoughts. For the majority, attacking rugby is generally more entertaining than defensive. And yes, SA has beaten them once in this Championship, they also beat SA once. They played 6 won 5, SA played 6 won 3.

    • @armandtoma8124
      @armandtoma8124 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Is it not "out of touch" then - is it simply arrogance to expect that the game should be played within the limits you set? As far as I can see, they play within the law (as much as any team does) and have scored PLENTY of tries against both the All Blacks and others. If that's his opinion, well then this is mine - I think NZ love sitting pretty at the top, and don't like it when they get beaten. I think alot of the comments from them are criticisms against us (or indeed sometimes other countries) whereas it is seldom that South African commentators/pundits are so harshly critical about our opponents. Needlessly so, in my opinion. So yes, it feels good to put one over on him. Even if it is only 1-1. And I think your stats lesson is just proving my point even more - which is that, being an incredibly successful team, the AB's don't like that South Africa have the ability to beat them. Sure, the stats aren't in our favour, but I'm sure they're better than any other nation's stats against New Zealand. So yes, we have alot of areas to improve in, we need to increase our squads' depth, we have challenges to our provincial sides but for now, we are going to savour this latest result, whether JK thinks our style of play was acceptable or not. Philosophically speaking, of course.

      @@Noone-p2p2x - exactly in other words when the Springboks box kick their opponent has GOT to catch the ball then you have to get numbers on the tackle ball or they well turn you over! When the Boks got their target length right in the 2nd half look at the amount of time the ABs failed to take the ball in the air and how many times did their chaser beat Jordie Barrett to the landing zone with more traffic - it put us extreme pressure! The Boks controlled the lineouts forcing the ABs only option is to throw it to the front because anything that went to the back got picked off! Then from set pieces Barrett was throwing face ball passes on a umbrella rush defence and we got caught and made errors on the apex of that umbrella defence! How many times did we conceive turnover possession at the tackle ball and the errors! Here is the main issue - we still have not been able to counter the rush umbrella defence by the Boks!!!! Why are these NOT the main talking points!
      In regards to the Boks tactics slowing the game down - guess what they got away with it because the referee allowed it! I remember speaking to a ex-All Black trialist in 1987 and he told me that the best players are the ones who are able to play to the referee! There is no point in us going off at the referee about it - yes she is correct in her analysis but the point is how are the ABs going to counter this if the referee allows it? I thought Savea could have put more pressure on the referee but even then if the referee is not going to listen - what do you do?
      I agree with you that the Boks need to look at that attacking zone 30m out from the opponent goal-line! Yes its a great option to have with up & unders but if they could vary their play with some attacking with ball in hand as well posing problems for defences because it then puts the defence in 2 minds - are they going to kick or attack with ball in hand!

    Springbok line speed was all over the All Blacks. They have huge physicality and won the collisions and have outstanding backs that match the power and running of the All Black backline. The Boks after many years are starting to get it right again and hit their straps. Which as an Englishman is great to see. The dominance the All Blacks have had since 2010 is over. Springboks keep it simple. If you can beat them with finesse then great well done. We'll all applaud. But you have to match them up front and in the collisions. That is just the way the Boks play and long may that continue. They've crushed England several times, twice in the World Cup final even after an excellent England performance put the All Blacks to the sword in the last World Cup. I thought the All Blacks might have beat the Boks had you won that Semi Final. I now think you might have gone down by a larger margin than they crushed England
    Rest of the world needs to step up like the Irish. It is also great to see the French starting to find their old menace and allure and ability to crush anyone anywhere on any day. There are areas of the game that need attention and the scrum is one of them although the game yesterday had lots of solid scrummages and real competition. The IRB need to get things right but if even Scotland now have a competitive side we could be in for a golden era of international Rugby and that is always the most important for me. The All Blacks are fine. You've come up against an excellent French and the best Irish team ever and you're struggling in South Africa. That's not a crisis it is just Rugby. You'll be fine. I still put you second or third favourites for the World Cup next year

    It seems unlikely the AB's will make the same mistakes two games in a row. I think that the AB's also adapt better and are better second time around. I think that it is easier to practice being more clinical in your approach to a rush defense than it is to perfect that kind of defense. The Bok's have clearly perfected the rush defense already. The AB defense was pretty good even though their attack lacked some precision. The question for the Bok's, is how do we beat the AB's. The AB's, will be concentrating on being clinical. This formula has worked well for the AB's in the past. I think it will be another close game, and the team that uses every opportunity with the ball, to attack with ball in hand, will win. Both will defend well, but being able to defend at a high level and still attack at every opportunity will separate the teams. As coffeine said, that was far from a high pressure situation like the rest of them were. But, at the same time that is the nature of the high ball. Boks make a break get up to the ABs half. Boks kick it away ABs recover the ball. Then repeat process until either team makes a mistake or it's full time. The ABs we're pulled into playing boks footy whether they liked it or not. This is why I think that the boks aren't going to change much. But that's the unpredictability the boks have in their arsenal. Use it fellow rivals ✌️ shake things up, what more is their to lose 🤷👍

      I mean, I think one team or another can dictate how the game is played though. The ABs can't run it out of their 22 every single time, they also have to play for territory and balance the kicks from hand as well, or else they end up pinned in their own half the whole game and are doing exactly what SA want them to do. The Boks can apply pressure in many ways to determine the way the game plays out, and if they want to grind out a game that's much easier than the ABs wanting to play free-flowing. Kind of a rock-paper-scissors equation, if you get my meaning.

  • @nickybabalas
    @nickybabalas 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think we have a good understanding of that game plan to work for 80% of the game. What I do not understand is getting close to the AB 22 and then kicking the ball. I understand it's a territory game, but we have won the territory, we are in an attacking position, let's attack, not defend in an attacking space.
    We could have won if we played when we had the ball approaching the 22. Kicking the ball away in those positions will lose you the game, and it did.

    What is the obsession about how SA Rugby plays since we won the WC? Yes I agree at times we can kick the ball away needlessly and throw away our possession. However when we combine it forward dominance and attacking space when it is available it is effective. It’s up to the opposition to stop it. We have seen what happens when teams try play the same game as the AB’s - they get thumped. The key to beating the AB’s is to slow the game down, and beat them at the breakdown. IMO the AB’s 1st five is a weakness of theirs and can be exploited (scrums, lineouts) which the Boks did in both games. AB’s don’t like slow ball and this creates errors in their game. Anyways was a fantastic 2nd game. And can’t wait to hear what JK has to say this week! Now both teams need to thrash the northerners.

      Absolutely BUT I thought it was comical the referee telling the ABs to hurry up in one lineout in the first half!
      HOWEVER that is not the issue that we should be focusing on! The Boks controlled the lineouts with the POD formation of Etzebeth (front) De Jagar (middle) and Vermuelen (back)! This cut off any AB throw to the back or middle forcing the ABs to go to the front with that defensive POD pouring through the lineout to put pressure on Perenara! It also allowed the Boks to defend the rolling maul to the sideline - thought there were some issues on gate of entry with the Boks driving to the sideline!
      The issue is it stopped Perenara throwing flat passes off the lineout giving the ABs access over the advantage line - MAJOR ISSUE for AB attack!

    Has rugby really become so one dimensional that we we can only appreciate one style of play. I watch rugby because it of all its complexities compared to other sports. Can we not celebrate the Springboks for bringing a new dimension to the game? The Springboks are bringing something different and it interests me to see how teams cope with this. Why do we have ex All blacks speaking about our game as though it is going to stangnate when we all know that it is always evolving. ABs will adapt, Boks will adapt, and the rivalry will continue. Rugby will always evolve and teams will always be developing. I understand that AB supporters want to see running rugby, but what interests me is seeing how teams evolve from being sucked into playing the boks style of play and where the game will go from there. Do our ex ABs really think that this is a connundrum that can't be solved and that this is just how its going to be forever. I am a mathematician with a handfull of games in my early scholling career to draw experience from. If I can realize this we should expect better commentary from ex ABs. Shout out to fresh perspectives and exploring new dimsions of the game. Seeing everybody try to play in the same way and hearing everybody say the same things is not why I watch rugby. lol I came here to get an idea of how the ABs gameplan would develop from here. But they are just repeating what is being said on every other channel. Should we not expect more from ex ABs? We have heard this before.

    • @jjopl
      @jjopl 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it is necessarily bad that they (ex ABs) can't provide a desirable answer to counteract this style of play, the verdict is still not yet out on how one can counteract this 'new' brand of rugby. Is there even a good "running rugby" refutation to contestable high balls and pressure defenses? Doesn't seem like it (beyond catching high balls and nitpicking defensive schema with ball in hand...which is not unique to this style of play). There's also the fact that it is a very boring viewing experience (not just for AB supporters).
