Seth Godin - How to Get Your Ideas to Spread - Nordic Business Forum

  • Seth Godin, the world-renowned marketing and leadership author inspires us on how to get our ideas spread when mass marketing and traditional advertising have moved to the past.
    Key points:
    • Mass marketing and traditional advertising don’t work anymore.
    • Everyone is a click away, which means that both opportunities, but also competition, are increasing.
    • “People like us (do things like this)” - the job of the marketer is to find the people like us and determine what do things like this really mean.
    • The winners will be those who can find the right niche and lead them.
    Questions to consider:
    • What is the niche customer segment your product or service is for?
    • How can you reach and lead that group?
    • How can you make your customers feel that you see and hear them?
You can also find a written summary of the keynote at www.nbforum.com/event-summaries/
    Bio:
Seth Godin is the author of 19 books that have been bestsellers around the world and have been translated into more than 35 languages. He’s also the founder of the altMBA and The Marketing Seminar, online workshops that have transformed the work of thousands of people.
He writes about the post-industrial revolution, the way ideas spread, marketing, quitting, leadership, and most of all, changing everything. You might be familiar with his books Linchpin, Tribes, The Dip, and Purple Cow. His latest book, This Is Marketing, was an instant bestseller around the world.
In addition to his writing and speaking, Seth has founded several companies, including Yoyodyne and Squidoo. His blog (which you can find by typing “Seth” into Google) is one of the most popular in the world.
In 2018, he was inducted into the Marketing Hall of Fame. More than 10,000 people have taken his powerful workshops, including altMBA and The Marketing Seminar.

I’m only four minutes and 23 seconds into this video and what he said resonated with me so much. For years, I only did what I knew how to do and although generating seven figures in business, I could’ve generated tens of millions had I expanded my mind. I will be 47 next month and I feel like I’m starting over but in all reality, I have a lot more knowledge than what I did and I’m looking forward to this next chapter of my life.

My recap for those who don’t watch the entire video:
We cannot cause interest to occur but what we can do is find some strands of interest and amplify them (1:07)
Cat food is not for cats it’s for the people who buy it (6:27)
    Marriage example (permission marketing) (19:15)
At the edges is where we’re going to earn the privilege of having people want to talk to us (21:56)
Every plane you have ever been on has been off course and the pilot adjusts (34:48)
The cost of adjusting has never been lower, and what we can do now is put things into the world and adjust (35:00)
“Have a problem? Tell a human, not a follower.” Enrollment marketing = marketing with me not to me (36:00)
Writers block = bad habits + inability to dance w/our fear (37:21)
If don’t have enough good ideas, then you don’t have enough bad ideas (39:15)
    Clap in unison exercise (41:40)
Raise your hand example (we learned from a young age to hold a little bit back b/c industrialists always ask for more) (47:08)
We need more leaders not managers (although I don’t think we can have all generals and no troops) (48:22)
Grow wings on your way down, it’s the only way to learn how to fly (54:05)
If failure isn’t an option then neither is success: innovation is failing again and again until you figure out how it works (54:35)
Difference b/w ready and prepared: we’re all prepared but not ready, b/c to be ready is to be sure (56:10)
Innovation is repetitive failure until you figure out how it works (time stamp unknown)
    Summary (59:50)

People like us, on US campuses 1966-1970, did things like that, listened to music like that, dressed like that. My favorite memories..we were not the "majority." Since then, a few years went by, during which I was completely miserable-- until I found my other group, and now people like us do stuff like this --in all countries, all the time.😊

I love the way Seth Godin speakes. I love that I can watch him speak one time and think I got it all. Until I realise, there is more.
I love the way he speakes because I can only understand what I understand. I will only understand more when I am what is needed to understand more.
Imagine a snail. A cute little snail. I want it to get away from a road. So I point in a direktion for it to go, but the snail couldn't care less. No matter how hard I try it would not understand. But if this snail was a human and I pointed then there would be some understanding.
When you watch Seth Godin he speakes in a way so you will understand something and another person would understand something else.
so when I hear him speak again I will understand something else because I am someone else.

I remember the part about flying too low. Then again I bought old, used books and I'm fifty years old. I'd like to think we covered that in school but unfortunately I can't remember for sure.

Please watch and rewatch this video. S.G. ask and teaches you the right questions. But, he also makes it so clear. For me is a refresh. I love this: "How can you make your customers feel that you see and hear them?" If you answer these questions right you'll get there much faster and you will get fans, not customers. Genius.

Also, I cant explain how much I resonate to everything he said.
I would love to have some suggestions on books that can shape the thoughts, if anybody got something please drop a comment below :)

I'm from Kenya and I didn't know what that word 35:14 was. Unless you meant "sawa bana" which is a phrase mixture of Swahili and slang meaning 'Alright, or okay'. It's not "I see you" or "I know who you are" or "I respect you".

Perhaps what he was looking for is the zulu greeting ‘sawubona’ - ‘i see you’. We can excuse him for how close the words seem:-)

It puts you into a state where nothing matters in a good way. You truly don't give a shit about anything and you're just happy as fuck as a result, because nothing matters. Nothing matters, nothing means anything, there's nothing to do, there's no point, there's no goal but there's also no boredom, there's no negative meanings attached to the meaninglessness, it's just perfectly meaningless and it's awesome. You're basically just like sitting like a cat on a windowsill enjoying whatever experience is before it, just being and it feels amazing. 🐈
