I also make a small lidded box just large enough to hold the mouse. I call them wooden mouse traps, ( they only catch wooden mice) always good for a chuckle when some opens the lidded box. Really fun if the box lid squeaks a bit when opening. Sure to put smiles on people's faces,
Nice work Alan, and thanks for the shout out for the screw chuck. Your process was how I used to do it too. Then I found I had a lot of very small pieces of really nice wood and that prompted me to design and have machine shop make the ESW Screw chuck. Now my mouse nest (scrap box) fills up with little pieces from various project, you know the piece still in the chuck after parting off a project. I just round over and drill the tail hole, then when the box is near full I do a production run of mice. Great giveaways for youngsters (some oldsters too Lol) who stop by the shop. I have even started making pinto mice and zebra mice, like I say I hate to throw away any wood, and glue opens up a new opportunity. Even my cutting boards offcuts are making it into the mouse nest.
Nice little project Allan. Where do you get your Butternut? When I lived in Vermont my neighbor had several Butternut trees and I had a nice supply of wood from him, it is one of my favorite woods to work with but I have not been able to find a good source.
Thanks for this one Alan, I've been wanting to turn a mouse and this is very helpful. 😎 I'd also love to see some more info on that little tool you used to mark your tenon size. 😉
Nice project. Did I see that right at 3:28? Seems like your chuck wanted to run away. Love your videos and as always keep them coming cause I am coming back for more.
Yes, it did want to run away. Apparently I did not give it that extra shove when I mounted it. Then the lathe braked faster than the chuck momentum could handle. Alan

You are so welcome.

Great project Alan.
Many thanks! Jack
Alan
They are really cute. I didn't even know you could do something like this. Thank you for sharing your video.
Yes you can!
Alan
Have you tried the Colwin Way Skews? I find them better than standard skews. Awesome mice!!
There are a lot of great tools out there.

Mine came from Oregon mixed in with a lot of walnut seconds from gun stock vendor.
He's out of business now.

It is a gauge I am trying out that gives inside and outside dimensions for my chuck jaws based on my live center. Still working on it.
Alan
Thanks Allan for this fun project. A good idea. 😃👍
Glad you enjoyed it Jean-Louis

Can you give any info about the small jig/gadget you have made to help draw circles on the end of the spigot please?

@@AsWoodTurns Looks like a very useful gadget :-)
Excellent fun project 👍
It sure is
Alan
Those are really neat, Alan. The only problem is that I try to get rid of mice in my house and you're helping them multiply (lol). Take care.
Bill
Could you make an exception for wooden mice?
Alan
@@AsWoodTurns Of course!
What size hole did you use for the ears? Thanks
Trial and error until it fits.
Alan
lovely project Alan. I made some a while ago, fun quick projects :)
That they are!
Alan
Thank you for the information sir!
You are welcome
Alan
it is a good idea to make fishing lures!!!
That is why I am here! Fishing 🤠🤙I hope you have been catching monsters comrade!
However, you may want to stabilize the wood.
Alan
Like this project. I don't have a disk or belt sander to make it flat.
Sounds like you may want to mount an MDF disk to your lathe with PSA sandpaper on it.
Alan
That's a great idea making them mice. Them is awesome
They are! James
Alan
Cute. Just gopher it...but it's a mouse!
Would you prefer a rat?
