    ZV-E10 still kills it. The iPhones are always so oversharpened, but they have improved, especially in background blur!

    • @chadkelley
      @chadkelley ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Not just the sharpness, they overprocess the image in software as well.

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The background blur is a bit of a double edged sword as the aperture is fixed, so there are some disadvantages for landscapes, sunrises/sunsets (the sun will always just be a blob), etc.
      Thankfully this is equivalent to around 24mm f/6.4 full frame or 16mm f/4.2 APS-C so it's not too bad for your average quick snap.

    • @vlcheish
      @vlcheish ปีที่แล้ว +5

      "iPhones are always so oversharpened"
      Not with the log

    • @DigiDriftZone
      @DigiDriftZone ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@vlcheish Log impacts colours and contrast, not sharpness. It's better being able to reduce the contrast but it still looks over sharpened, including in this video. Look at the jacket and also stubble, hair and skin. You can even see the sharpening effect in the out of focus bricks in the background.

    • @vlcheish
      @vlcheish ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@DigiDriftZone False. Multiple reviewers all stated the log format turns off the excessive sharpening in previous iPhones. Jordan Drake from PetaPixel stated this as many others.
      The testing from users on Reddit Cinema subreddit saying the same. Example from today;
      "aMac_UK
      11 hr. ago
      So I’m in the middle of testing the 15 Pro’s Log and ProRes footage at the moment and my biggest observations are that the Log mode turns off two annoying properties of the iPhone’s video recording:
      Over sharpening and automatic tone mapping.
      That clean image also doesn’t have any post sharpening applied, and it’s great. The ProRes is undeniably and obviously better at keeping small details so it’s not as necessary compared to shooting in h.264/5 or otherwise."

    Tony Northrup tested this, resolution wise, the 15 Pro resolves around the same detail as an 8-10 megapixel camera (i.e. less then the 12 megapixel A7S III once you remove the artificial sharpening). As for the lenses, you are getting 13mm f/10, 24mm f/6.3 and 77mm f/24 (120mm f/21 on the Max) fixed aperture equivalents to full frame.
    This is somewhat academic but I found it quite fascinating. Despite the sensors and technologies seeming like they couldn't be more different on paper, in practice, you can apply the same crop factor calculations. You get an image uncannily similar to taking an image on an A7RV at 35mm F/21 and then cropping 70% of the image out to match what the iPhone's 15 Pro Max tele lens does. 70% because the crop factor here is roughly 3.54x.
    Similarly if you take an image on the wide lens on the iPhone at iso450, it should equal 24mm f/6.4 at ISO3200 on FF - ISO formula is ISO*(CropFactor*2) - and wow, it does! - same exposure, same field of view, same depth of field, similar detail (if you resize the FF image down to around 8 megapixels and upsample to match the same image size), though iPhone has more aggressive noise reduction out of the box.
    So there's no inherit advantage in DOF, or resolution or low light performance or anything else. But knowing this, if I do want a lot of DOF I set my 24mm on the ZV-E1 to around f/6 (or f/4 on E10) and 12 megapixels still resolves more detail than 48 on the iPhone :)

    First of all great comparison, love your videos!
    I don't understand why so many comments mention "hype" in a negative way where clearly you can see by this comparison how far the smartphone cameras have come, especially iPhones in the video department. So small lenses and sensors and I think they still generate very crips and in most scenarios natural videos. And being nervous about it beating a larger camera to justify your purchase of a dedicated camera is not necessary lol.
    I think phones and especially iPhone are a great opportunity for people who want to shoot nice videos and still have all the features a smartphone offers.
    I have a Fuji's camera which shoots an excellent quality video, super crisp and natural, but I mainly still use iPhone 13 PM for everyday use because it has many advantages in terms of image stabilization and ergonomics.

The Sony Kit Lens produced better skin color to my eyes, I did not like the skin color from the Sigma lens. Granted that you color graded all these videos so you had a say on how it all came out. To be honest, the conclusion I was able to gather from this video, if I only had $1000 USD, it would be better invested on an iPhone than a camera, the phone will always be with you at all times and the video quality is very comparable or even better in certain aspects. The iphone for such a small sensor is a fantastic camera for photos and videos. It is something that you don't need to worry about when using and that is its beauty. You can get some excellent footage and photos if you know what you re doing. Mirrroless cameras requires more effort however, the lens are far superior and offer a lot of versatlity. My biggest gripe with all mirrorless cameras is they fail on so many fronts - no internal SSD storage, dont use computational software, do not offer thunderbolt port, Wifi and Bluetooth are exceptional bad, software/firmware upgrades are poor and app support is absolutely the worst.

    The comparison was honestly closer than I thought it would be, it's a bit scary. I was on board for buying both the iPhone 15 pro max and a ZV-E10 but now I think that in order for me to justify carrying anything bigger than an iPhone it would have to be something full frame. That slightly more rare time I want to actually carry camera gear around like at an event or paid shoot has to have image quality that looks night and day difference, not early morning and afternoon. And the difference decreases the smaller the screen is, so modern phone cameras for most audiences seems to win for almost all situations.

    Very interesting comparison. Somehow with the cinematic mode, Apple has managed to make the background more intrusive, it’s like so busy that it’s been blurred into the foreground somehow. ZVE-10 wins hands-down at the same price point here.

    Nothing beats a real bokeh! Soft, real edges and a real blur cant be beaten (at the moment) by AI or software.

    Excellent comparison! I'm actually going to pick up the iPhone 15 Pro in a week or two and will be building a matching LUT for it to make life a lot easier :) The Blackmagic Camera app is the key to maximising quality, that's for sure! And as a bonus it supports viewing LUTs as well. Thanks as always! Cheers from Osaka, Japan :)

    Hi Bennett you create great videos. I am a big fan of yours. After watching a video I made a choice to buy zve10. Undoubtedly zve10 is the best. But when it comes to convenience of shoot and sent it on social media a phone is much better. Can you guide me if iPhone is better or Samsung ultra is better?

    I have watched dozens of channels that do these reviews. Mark is the one I trust more. I want to start a TH-cam channel with indoor talking head videos so I got the Sony ZV-E10. I haven't taken it out of the box yet and still don't have the Sigma 16M f1.4. I know nothing about cameras and audio or video so hopefully it's easy to use to start a TH-cam channel. Thank you Mark for this channel of yours.
    Separately, what audio equipment should I get for the Sony ZV-E10 for the purpose above?
    Also, some channels are saying that the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 can replace the Sony ZV-E10 for indoor talking head videos for TH-cam. Can you compare them maybe??

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will compare them, but I would never replace the zv-e10 in studio with a wide angle lens and a one inch sensor l However, vlogging might be a different story - we shall see

      @@MarkBennettCameraCrisis @thefilmalliance Mark, I saw your video with the settings (all tabs all pages) for the Sony ZV-E10. I just got my first camera ever.
      I tell you what I would like to see and learn at the end. Please consider it.
      I just want to start a TH-cam channel with indoor talking head videos.
      The truth is that I found that video of the settings quite overwhelming and complicated.
      I started following each step. I put the speed at half the pace but mid video I got overwhelmed by all the settings.
      I don't understand why it is so complex in 2023.
      *Could you make a video explaining how to put the settings of that camera to make the YT indoor talking head videos look good or decent enough??*
      *One video with the default lens that comes with the camera. And a separate video with the Sigma 16M f1.4 lens?*
      (You recommend this lens a lot for YT indoors videos but I don't have it yet...$...I only have the default one still).
      I may be asking too much, but could you make a separate video slowly explaining what all those terms and variables mean?
      I don't want to become a camera or video expert. I don't shoot videos for a living but I am struggling with this now.
      Thank you for the consideration.
      J

    Great video. Would have loved to see your studio recording with Apples own app. I've seen quite a lot of Blackmagic stuff and it appears to me not to fully take advantages of the new LOG-format.
