    iPhone is like a song in MP3 format, lower quality but a lot more convenient and versatile (and cheaper). Dedicated camera is like a CD or vinyl, much higher (sound) quality but requires setup and knowledge to operate properly in order to accentuate its full potential. For most of the people, MP3 is a better choice.

      It depends on if you are looking at images alone or the actual shooting experience. The grip, ease of changing white balance, shutter speed and aperture all outweigh what can be done on the phone. Swiping through all the settings on my phone to try and customize it is a pain. Taking all that time could also mean you lose the shot.

    I had an a6000 and I struggled with this as phones improved, until finally, I’ve put the mirrorless on a shelf and I rely almost exclusively on my phone. Why? It’s always in my pocket, it always works, it’s always web connected, and it takes good photos and excellent video.

      Yes both, standard and apple log

  • @iamakkkshay
    @iamakkkshay 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    There is a huge bug in apple LOG when shooting with pro manual camera settings via Blackmagic app, the issue is that the white clipping point for Apple LOG is not constant for lower ISO values which shifts the histogram to left and crushes the shadow details and even make False Colour and Highlights Clipping Lights useless as at base 55 ISO the footage clips at about 60-70 IRE instead of 95 IRE which is there when using Auto ISO/Shutter speed setting or using Manual settings only above ISO 1250.
    This uneven white clipping point in LOG even affects the LUT and reduce the overall dynamic range of the sensor at base ISO of 55.
    Majority of sensor Analog gain is available only till ISO 400 as rest of it is just digital gain adding up which reduces the signal to noise ratio of image as you go higher.
    Seems Apple designed LOG only to be used in auto exposure mode via stock camera app with tons of Baked in Noise Reduction.

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      This was informative. I do see a lot of noise in that lower ISO range and deduced it was from the sensor size. But now that you mention it I see what you're saying. Great point and addition to the conversation. Appreciate it

    This was very well done! I guessed correctly which was which, largely as the iPhone looks good, but a camera just a bit better. Frankly, I think the iPhone looks closer to real life whereas the camera looks perhaps more movie like. I find now that my iPhone is always with me (not as a camera…but it does get that role too..especially for quick photos), but for photos and video I I carry an action camera and a small camera (in my case a Sony Rx100vii) and I’m set. The Sony largely for its Zoom, the action for vlogging and poor weather and the iPhone for quick shots I might want to share easily. Everything takes up almost no room and so light. The reason I can see for a ‘proper’ camera these days is for the art side or for great zoom needs (wildlife is one example). If you really enjoy taking photos (or video) as a hobby, somewhat pixel peep or need it for artistic uses (e.g. wedding or other pro services) a camera and lenses are a great way to go. Otherwise a set up like mine (choose your own small camera of preference) is close to perfect, especially if you just post on social media. My ‘real’ mirrorless LUMIX camera rarely gets any use, unless for studio work..just too big when you add lenses. That said, for my use case I keep looking for another that is small (lenses too) and relatively light and the 6700 is on the list. Ideally a camera and maybe (?) two lenses for a total of 1.1kg or so.

    • @thefilmalliance
      @thefilmalliance  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's awesome that you were able to identify the footage from each camera. I agree, the iPhone's color science a lot of times looks very true-to-life in program auto. It's super interesting to hear how you've got your camera setup dialed in for different situations. That's really the key, isn't it? Having the right tool for the job, and it sounds like you've figured that out. I'm always curious to see what Sony can do to pack amazing performance into a smaller body with the Sony a6700 compared to how Apple does it. Thanks for the comment

    The coolest thing about it all is that we've gotten to a time where this kind of video is being made in all seriousness. It's not the Nokia N90, which itself was huge, had a longer camera than the Sony you compared. And yes, closing our eyes we then said “well wow already cell phones as can shoot, although if you open those videos now, it becomes funny, from the terrible quality.” And now in the phone, which is less than 1 cm thick, we get a video, which is not that not obviously worse, but you have to compare them side by side, to look at the subtleties and detail on the LARGE MONITORS))))) That's really cool! That said, the iPhone has a sharper picture due to its post-processing stuff. Personally, I do not like it, and everyone who likes the movie frame, but the fact itself! It's cool!
    I had such a thing that about 4 years ago my Fuji xt3 ran out of battery, and poverbank, as it turned out later, did not have powerdelivery and therefore did not help, but, at that time, already an old iPhone 6c plus helped to finish shooting frames, which I then perfectly combined on the editing, well processed. And so that a person who is not trained, the average person would not even notice the difference. And now on 15 pro max we have a thing that will complement the picture perfectly. Which can be combined at all without problems on the general editing.

    Actually I didn’t know the second shot is the Sony from the color science, but from the depth of field and blurred background. Only a camera with an f2.8 and above lense can produce that shallow depth of field because the lens is farther from the sensor than an iPhone.

    I'd rather put Sony's Xperia 1 against a dedicated camera. iPhone and most other phones just give you the usual HDR overprocessed look and I think most people won't really want to shoot Log on a consumer device like a phone. Imagine being on vacation and you shoot, let's say, 200 videos of different length. Who wants to edit them all in post just to have more natural footage? I would rather go with Cinetone or natural creative style on the Xperia as a middle ground. Somehow Apple refuses to let you any choice about the outcome of your image.

    My iPhone 16 Pro Max has officially replaced my mirrorless camera for 99.999% of my shooting needs. One because it is so convenient. Always with me. Easy to carry around & start shooting at a moments notice. Lugging around a heavy camera with a big lens cannot compete with that aspect of the iPhone. Are there compromises to be made when the iPhone is your main camera? Sure. But i have accepted & adapted to those for the unmatched convenience. Low light shooting is still a weak point, but other than that, I am more than happy shooting exclusively on an iphone. Plus lowlight performance will continue to get better as Apple increases the sensor size combined with advances in computational photography. Unless I am shooting wildlife photography like birds or sports, the iphone does everything I need in a camera. Using it for street & travel photography has been amazing. The new 48mp ultra wide has greatly improved my landscape photography as well.

    for still pics like portrait and scenery, most smartphone cams would cover 80-90% of your needs and comparable to prosumer class dedicated digital cameras. newer iphones and higher android phone models can shoot in RAW a great way to start up your interest into image editing.
    to me, the cutting edge of dedicated cams over smartphone cams is the superior autofocus capabilities. it's more important for people getting into sports video/photography and vlogging. and with lens options, dedicated cams can do wildlife, smartphone cams are more limited at telephoto range.

Admittedly, this is complaining at a high level, but every serious filmmaker will agree. I'm not interested in making the iPhone cameras bad. But you have to distinguish between a good camera and a better camera. And: which camera is used for which purpose. Professional filmmakers should therefore reach for a "proper" camera. A very interesting video. I have the A6400 and have taken it with me together with the iPhone and as you say, it’s a pain because you’ve got a heavy bag. However, the A6400 does give a crisper more controllable image but one of the other issues that you do not mention is the availability of HDR. By default, the iPhone shoots in HDR. The A6400 does return a DNG and a jpeg, but the DNG is the best but can only realistically be extracted using Lightroom. I use the mobile version to import my A6400 photos and edit them into HDR output where they❤ look superb. For obvious reasons, this effort is only worth putting in to your really favourite photos. The iPhone however, does give you a relatively simple editor that preserves HDR but also allows you to import their file into Lightroom to further tweak it if necessary, so great photos are tempting out of the iPhone box. Horses for courses.

    Personally, the A6700 and iPhone 16 is not exactly a fair comparison. Maybe iPhone 16 and Sony RX100-7(20MP) or a RX100-5a if you are on a budget? I carry my RX100-7 with me when I don't want to carry my A6700. A6700 has so many whiz-bang features that I am just barely scratching the surface.

    When comparing the quality of devices like the Sony A6700 and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, it's essential to take advantage of the maximum capabilities of each device to get a fair comparison. Using the most advanced color formats and profiles offered by each device, such as S-Log3/Gamut3 on the Sony A6700 and ProRes 422 with Apple Log on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, will allow both to reach their full potential in terms of dynamic range, color gradation, and detail.
    Additionally, by capturing at 60 fps on both devices, an equivalence in fluidity and sharpness in shots with movement is ensured, which is relevant in video comparisons. Using these advanced profiles and formats also gives room to compare the editing capacity in post-production, since both S-Log3 and Apple Log are designed to retain as much color and exposure information as possible from their respective sensors. That would be the REAL AND FAIR comparison to demonstrate which has better quality, color, and texture in the image regardless of the bokeh.
    I compared the iPhone 14 Pro Max's main camera (1x) in ProRes 422 with Rec. 2020 at 30fps against the Sony ZV-E10 in S-Log3/Gamut3 at 30fps, using the sharpest equivalent Sony APS-C lens (Sony E 15mm f/1.4 G SEL15F14G). The Sony ZV-E10 was slightly better in sharpness, likely due to the quality of the lens. When zoomed in to 400x, sharpness was noticeably better on the Sony. Additionally, the Sony ZV-E10 showed greater detail in the shadows, which was evidence of its superior dynamic range. The difference was more noticeable in dynamic range than in detail and sharpness. The Sony also demonstrated better colorimetry thanks to the Gamut3 profile, which outperforms Rec. 2020 in this regard. In conclusion, the ZV-E10 has slightly superior texture and sharpness to the iPhone, but stands out notably for its dynamic range in the shadows.
    A real comparison of the maximum capacity of the Sony a6700 Slog3/Gamut3 XAVC S-I (4:2:2, 10-bit) 59.94p (600Mbps) with the Sony E 15mm f/1.4 G SEL15F14G lens vs iPhone 16 Pro Max ProRes 422/Apple Log 60p would be very interesting. That would be a fair comparison.
    Correct exposure for S-Log3 (IRE 41 for mid-grey 18%) generally requires slightly overexposing compared to Apple Log, as Apple Log (IRE 38 for mid-grey 18%). This should also be taken into account for a fair comparison.

    I'm a little happy to recognize what's being shot by what. Still, the iphone wins outright. it's for the reason that the best camera is the one you have right on you. What do you need a Sony a9 or 6700 for at home when you're out and about? While your phone is still with you. But I'm glad to see by the video that the bigger chip and better optics still wins :) But it is clear that the vast majority of people will be perfectly happy with the result from the iphone .

    I’m mostly interested in low-light scenarios, as I don’t suppose the difference will be great during the day.

    At 16:41, a6700 lose focus while the eye of subject is still visible.
    I thought a6700 AF was able to handle situation like this (another object cover eye of main subject).
    Have you turn on subject recognition to human?
    I just about to buy one so this make me doubt about "superior AF" that eb is refer to Sony newest model

      Great point and good eye. I had center focus on and it briefly locked in on the violin once the violin crossed the center. If I was using wide as my focus area, it should’ve stayed locked on his eye.

    Talking about two products that are difficult to compare as if they were cars and comparing is a bit... basic. (In the comments).
    The reality is that there is a camera with its accessories that you have to pay for and a phone with several built-in lenses and an excellent gimbal. The Sony is at a disadvantage because it is known for generating garish and artificial colors and the Apple is great in that aspect, in the same line as Canon. You can see it in the photo of skin tones. The photo of the girl with the keyboard, one has a lot of depth of field and the Sony does not, the skin is obviously more neutral on the Apple.
    I received some material from a musical group to do color, then they told me that it had been recorded with an iPhone 15 and I couldn't believe it.
    I am a professional photographer, videographer and colorist and I have very expensive and bulky cameras for my work, so I will not defend working with a phone, but I think the iPhone 16 Pro Max is an excellent option for any normal person and for TH-camrs who cannot claim to be Stanley Kubrick either. I'm actually thinking about buying one for certain moments or instead of carrying a camera and Ronin.
    I think you were already clear about what you preferred throughout the video, I didn't find it objective. But it was interesting.

    It might be equal if you are filming but If you take photography seriously the gap to iPhone is big. Lowlight, Milkyway, real macro, big prints, landscape in most cases the iPhone can't compete for rea.l

    can't believe people are still confused about this or even having a hard time to decide. obviously what's better or right for you is based on use case scenario. no way in hell people would pick a phone camera for video/photo purposes only. if you have to pick one and does not have a phone that can't handle your day to day task. then go for the phone. if your phone is working fine for what's intended to be based on your lifestyle, go for the dedicated camera.... this is like, should I pick a Ferrari for my commute to work or Toyota Corolla?

      This is so true. It’s hard to even compare this as they are on a completely different playing field. I understand the iPhone cameras are improving as I have the iPhone 16 pro but it honestly doesn’t even compare to the capabilities of the a6700, the only way it is better is portability and convenience.

    The problem is that you have your phone in your pocket and dirt scratches the lens. The camera is more protected than I experience that the phone gets worse after only 2 years. I have a6000, and the photos are still perfect. But my iPhones are replaced after 2-3 years
