    • @mogon721
      @mogon721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      What the heck has a president to do with a republic? Why do you think you'd have to have a president, or that there would be "yet another level" of government? What nonsense...
      And what is the monarchy for you other than another UNELECTED level of government?
      Primarily, you have a parliamentary system, and a president in such a system is just a representative figure rubber-stamping legislative processes. You can also just leave out that office and have the head of government also be head of state. It's up to you. But keep in mind that you have NO say in who that opera king in London is, because in a monarchy, you are not the sovereign of the country, whereas in a republic you are.

      I think you have this confused young jojo.
      A president is not mandatory, it also doesn’t half to take over from the PM. For example, Ireland is a republic independent nation, they have a PM and a president. The PM runs the country and the president is more like an ambassador, don’t think he has any real power (like the king of England).
      But the fact you’re under the crown, means you DO have an unnecessary level of government governing you.

      @Anthony but you want a power hungry monarch.

    • @mogon721
      @mogon721 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Why would you have a power hungry president? NZ is a parliamentary democracy, and why would that change after becoming a republic? You have already replaced that terrible Westminster style election system where a party with just 43% of the votes can have a "landslide majority" with the election system from Germany that gurantees proportional representation. And by all accounts, this was hugely successful for your democracy.
      The German equivalent of your PM is not the president but the chancellor, elected by Parliament. The equivalent of the king is the federal president, elected basically by a joint session of the federal parliament and the federal council of the states. That office is hardly something for people with power hunger. It's an office whose importance rises and falls with the moral authority of its occupant. And whether a country needs a president/monarch at all, is a whole different story...
      The biggest difference is simply who is the sovereign of the country, you or some remote opera king...

    As a New Zealander I am appalled at Jacinda Ardern. Imagine if she was New Zealands head of state 😳 frightening. The best part of having a monarch as head of state is that politicians are held accountable by someone who doesn't strive for power but is born into it and is trained to be unbiased, think on the longest term rather than just keeping themselves in power. And are based in service. A founding that politicians never have. Jacinda is the perfect example. She has bankrupted our economy, has fractured relationships within New Zealand between many New Zealanders and cares more about her overseas exposure and 'fame' as a jumping board for a UN job than actual New Zealanders living in the country.

    As a Canadian I'm grateful and proud to have monarchy in Canada. I like the fact that we have a shared monarch with New Zealand and the other Realms. I also value having a non political Head of State who's role is to ensure that there is a legitimate PM to lead a government that needs to act within the bounds of the constitution. Since the time of Queen Victoria (and arguably since George III) Canada and New Zealand have had dedicated Monarchs who put their duty first, they serve. Looking south to the great Republic to our southern boarder during the last election, I didn't see politicians putting their country first. I saw violence, selfishness, greed, and anger. I also sensed genuine instability if President Trump wanted to use his power of Commander in Chief to prevent the peaceful transfer of power. My view is that our Realms deserve better - and that we have a better system of Government. Hopefully CANZUK can move forward - as I would be very excited to grow the relations between our nations.

While some similar countries in the Caribbean may cut that tie in the years to come, it’s not a surprise. Their relationship to the UK was more complicated and there are still grievances. I wouldn’t underestimate the importance of the relationship of Maori with ‘Queen Victoria and her successors’. ‘The Crown’ is not just some ephemeral synonym for ‘the government’. It is clear in the Treaty of Waitangi that that relationship is both specific and personal.
    Whilst a Republican leaning Kiwi myself, I still see value both in the constitutional arrangement and the relationship. I also think that it is vital that the Māori perspective is front and centre in any debate we have. The gains of the last three decades are far too critical to imperil and the realities of a Republican government when we have no written Constitution require a lot of consideration. We are a long way from a solution to that and while the former PM, Sir Geoffrey Palmer has his draft, I am more than cautious about his ivory tower experimentation. He is infamous amongst officials for declaring that the inclusion of reference to the Treaty of Waitangi in State Sector legislation was essentially meaningless in law. It proved to be otherwise.

Per capita kiwis earn more than in the UK. These days on the world stage, the UK is very much thought of as a dieing empire of which it's citizens are clinched to the memory of.
      One would hope that future NZ has the capacity and sense to declare itself a republic, claim the 2 million hectares of crown land it's own, and form a constitution where by all NZ citizens have equal opportunity within their country.

    But if it has to be discussed its completely pointless move. No new freedoms or increase in democracy will come about. A President would fill quite literally the same role as a Monarch however instead of a truly neutral figure you instead of a politician elected from a party that will further divisions in the country. It's nothing more than a symbolic gesture that would have a real affect in degrading people's feeling of the position.
    But if New Zealanders want that then that is on them though I don't think it's as inevitable as Jacinda Ardern tries to paint it. As long as they vote that in a referendum and not an election where a political party slip it into their manifesto as a backwards way of getting what they want.

    There was no morality attached to British Imperialism. That's the first fact we must accept. None the less, the blending of cultures via Imperialism, did create new cultures where the best of the colonialist and the colony grew into a new country. It took me a very long time to understand this. Sadly not all British colonies were as successful in standing strong and steadfast and maintaining their cultural identity, as the NZ Maori. Why ? We fought long and hard, until the Brits finally gave us a Treaty. Treaties don't come easily. You have to fight for your right to exist. The Aboriginal people of Australia never experienced that privilige. This is a complex issue. I think the NZ PM is correct. I love the Monarchy in England. And hope it remains in the sceptered isle until the end of time. Each country is different. Each has it's own identity. Our legacy as children of British Imperialism, is the English language. I love my language, and I am most grateful.

      SOUL'S JOURNEY AFTER DEATH
      Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, when the believer is ready to depart the world and is facing the Hereafter, angels from heaven descend with bright faces, as if their faces were the sun, with them are the shrouds and perfumes of Paradise, until they sit from him a distance as far as the eye can see. Then, the angel of death, upon him be peace, comes until he sits by his head and he says: O pure soul, come out to the forgiveness of Allah and His pleasure! He takes it out like a drop from a water-skin and holds it, never to leave his hand for the blink of an eye until he places it in that shroud and perfume. The scent coming from it is more pleasant than any musk you would find on the face of the earth. He ascends and passes by no gathering of angels but that they say: What a pure spirit! They say he is this person, son of this person, calling him by the best names by which he was known in the world, until he stops at the lowest heaven and seeks entry and it will be opened for him. The company of each heaven bring him closer to the heaven following it until he stops at the seventh heaven. Allah Almighty will say: Write the record of My servant in the righteous register and return him to the earth, for from it I created them, to it I return them, and from it I will take them out once again. His spirit will be returned to his body and two angels will come to sit by him, saying to him: Who is your Lord? He will say: My Lord is Allah. They will say: What is your religion? He will say: My religion is Islam. They will say: Who is this man sent you? He will say: He is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. They will say: How did you know? He will say: I read the Book of Allah, had faith in it, and believed in it. A heavenly announcement will be made: My servant has spoken the truth! Spread out carpets for him in Paradise, clothe him for Paradise, and open a gate for him to Paradise! Its comforts and fragrances will come to him and his grave will become spacious as far as his eye can see. A handsome man, with fine clothes and wonderful fragrance, will come and say: Glad tidings of what pleases you, for this was your Day you were promised! He will say: Who are you with such a handsome face? He will say: I am your righteous deeds! He will say: O Lord, begin the Hour that I may return to my family and property!”
      The Prophet continued, “Verily, when the unbeliever is ready to depart the world and is facing the Hereafter, angels descend from heaven with darkened faces and with them sack-cloth. They will sit away from his as far as the eye can see. Then, the angel of death approaches until he sits by his head and he says: O filthy soul, come out to the displeasure of Allah and His wrath! He will be separated from his body like the tearing of skewers from wet wool and he holds it in his hand, never to leave it for the blink of an eye, until he places it in this sack-cloth. The scent coming from it is like the most foul corpse found upon the face of the earth. They will ascend with him and not pass by a gathering of angels but that they say: What a filthy spirit! They say he is this person, son of this person, calling him by the ugliest names by which he was known in the world, until he stops at the lowest heaven. They will request it to be opened for him but it will not open.” Then, the Prophet recited the verse, “The gates of heaven will never open for them, nor will they enter Paradise, until the camel goes through the eye of the needle,” (7:40). The Prophet said, “Allah Almighty will say: Write his record in the wicked register in the lowest earth. His spirit will be thrown down,” then the Prophet recited the verse, “It is as though he had fallen from the sky and was snatched by the birds or the wind carried him down into a remote place,” (22:31). The Prophet said, “His spirit will return to his body and two angels will come to sit by him, saying to him: Who is your Lord? He will say: Uh, uh, I do not know! They will say: What is your religion? He will say: Uh, uh, I do not know! They will say: Who is this man sent to you? He will say: Uh, uh, I do not know! A heavenly announcement will be made: He has lied! Spread carpets for him in Hellfire and open a gate for him to Hellfire! Its heat and its flames will approach him, and he will be squeezed in his grave until his ribs press together. An ugly man, with hideous clothing and a foul stench, will approach him and say: Glad tidings of what despairs you, for this is your Day you were promised! He will say: Who are with your evil face? He will say: I am your wicked deeds! He will say: O Lord, do not begin the Hour!”

    People talk about Republic's in both New Zealand and Australia and I guess the people have a choice. But not all change is a good thing and while the people may change the head of state from Monarch to President. It won't take long before more and more power will be consecrated with the President. It will start off slow with the "President" as merely a Ceremonial figure, but it would only take one incident "where the President had to act" for and in the good of the nation and a precedent would be established and then its a slow but steady journey into less democracy. I could not care less about who is in the Monarchy, but I truly care about the institution. Monarchs come and go but the institution should not.

      Because she doesn't. Democracy left NZ a while ago now, when the left realised that as long as they created enough unemployment and state dependency during their term, and generated enough debt and conflict just before the inevitable handover to the opposition over 2-3 governments, that they run the show. The incoming opposition party spends their entire term mopping up the mess the left have created, and are then voted out by a public that does not completely understand economics or politics. They have gone a step further this time, they have nationalised the media by stealth in the form of "publish what we say to publish and turn off the comments section if we intend this as a pre-emptive gauge prior to a law change or we pull the funding". Sounds like we have a blur between the extremes of both systems of the far right and the far left here. That does not make us a centrist country, either.

    So for all the New Zealanders who are seeing this and saying they can’t imagine New Zealand becoming a republic. I encourage you to look at the Irish Republic. The role of her late Majesty the Queen exists there but is facilitated by the Irish president. The actual governance is done by the Irish Prime Minister (I apologize for not knowing the spelling of the Gaelic title), my point is Ireland has produced wonderful presidents who have represented the nation with the same dignity and neutrality as the queen. I specifically encourage everybody to look up Mary Robinson and Mary McAlees. Yes they had a few political opinions but they remained incredibly neutral so as not to interfere with the day today functions of the government. This is nothing to be afraid of and in modern-day New Zealand, New Zealanders should not have to recognize the authority of a foreign head of state appointed exclusively by birth. There’s something fundamentally wrong about that in the 21st-century. New Zealand and truly all commonwealth countries should be represented by a head of state that is of its people and elected by its people. The commonwealth can continue, certainly, but as a diplomatic alliance of nations, not as a modernization of empire and colonization.
