Late to the party, but I'll put my $.02 in. I've used MMO for the past 40 years. I am sold on this product. Even the military used it in WWII.
So, back when I had carbureted engines, I just dumped a quantity down the throat of the carburetor and revved the throttle from under the
hood to distribute it through the intake manifold and the cylinder heads. Smoked like hell, but it cleaned out the varnish deposits from the
carburetor, cleaned and lubricated the intake valves and cylinder heads. I keep my vehicles for 15-20 years until other parts start to wear out
and it becomes economically unviable to keep replacing those parts instead of getting a new vehicle. But I've never had engine problems, even
after 250K - 300K miles. Now my pickup and Saturday car are 2001 and 2003 models with port fuel injection. So for them, I just add 6 oz of MMO
to the fuel every 3K miles (16 gal fuel tanks), and it works to keep everything clean since the intake valves are washed by the fuel injected into
the intake manifold. However I bought a GDI car in 2015 to replace my aging 1998 Saturn. Still use MMO in the fuel to keep the injectors and cylinder
heads clean and lubricated, but I was stumped on how to get the intake valves cleaned. Until I face palmed and remembered just to put it
down the throttle body as I used to. I would use a spray bottle to atomize the MMO better than the sprayer Nates used and hopefully not drown the
engine since you can't rev the engine from under the hood with an electronic throttle. As far as not coating the MAF sensor as a comment below
calls out. I agree. But the MAF is generally up near the air filter and notice that he is spraying directly into the throttle body.

When I was 17 my aunt gave me a 1976 Chevy Chevette that her mechanic told her to just drive it till it died cause it was burning so much oil. Used Marvels in the oil and gas for a while and it stopped burning oil, l ended up putting 70,000 miles on that car gave it to a friend and she drove it for a couple years. Used Marvels ever since

If that car has a MAP sensor the air consumed during IDLE is most likely drawn from the PCV valve/system. I think you should try reinstalling the airbox, locating the PCV hose and valve, then introduce the marvel into the engine through the PCV hose. It will clean the PCV ports as well. You should be able to see that there isn't much air being drawn past the throttle plate at idle. No spray pattern adjustment will compensate for that.

I love Marvel mystery oil, I've been using it since the 1970's. I think it works well in your crankcase oil and fuel. I think it works better in the fuel if used over time, just pour in a few ounces at each fill up, and you will get cleaning and carbon dissolving treatments continuously. Marvel can also make your plastic deform, so don't get any concentrated Marvel on plastic.

No fuel additive will affect carbon buildup in a GDI only engine. The gas is emitted into the cylinder AFTER the valves. The gas therefore never comes in contact with the back of the valve. This is why you have carbon build up. Only oily air goes past the back of the valve.
Also, what is the goal of putting this in your gas tank?

You might need to rev the engine a bit to around 3000 or less, otherwise the mystery oil would just pool up somewhere in the intake manifold. With that said, I use MMO religiously on so my vehicles, fuel mix only. I will use it for the first time as an engine flush this month so it should be good.

NATES INTERACTIVE AUTO - I think you're okay with this video, just needed to rev the engine so that the mystery oil can reach the intake valves better. Or if you can access the brake booster hose, then that would be a bit better, but I'm not too familiar with GDI engines hehe. I also use MMO mixed with acetone as a penetrative oil for stuck bolts, works pretty good. Anyway, God bless and Merry Christmas.

NATES INTERACTIVE AUTO - I was just thinking, since you can view the intake valves, would it be possible to spray a light amount of MMO onto them while the engine is cool, then let them soak for a day or two? I'm thinking that it might really loosen up the gunk. I don't think that it'll harm a GDI engine as long as the amount sprayed isn't a lot. What do you think?

  • @MarkJCarruthers

The issue with GDI is the lack of fuel to clean the back of the valve. This means anything added to the fuel will not clean the valve. With GDI a walnut blast will clean the back of the valve and will be a part of the maintenance of a GDI vehicle. Thankfully manufactures are coming out with port and direct injected vehicles which should help keep the back of the valve cleaner.

I had a transmission with 140K on it and it was starting to shift hard and hold gears longer than it should. Sometimes it would lurch at low speeds. I took a chance and changed NOT FLUSHED, the fluid (you cannot remove the filter on this vehicle unless you remove it from the vehicle) I did three drain and fills. and the transmission got a bit better but still slightly wonky. Before doing the final oil change, I had heard that MMO could be used in a transmission to help remove varnish and deposits from the valve body. I added 1/4 quart to the transmission in lieu of the equal amount of transmission fluid. Low and behold, the transmission shifts nearly like new. Now at 151K I am very pleased with how this car drives. I think MMO is a miracle in a bottle for some applications. Unfortunately cleaning baked on carbon is not one of them. If your cat is easy to remove. I would try unbolting it and running easy off oven cleaner through the engine. It will definitely break that crud up, but if you did that with your CAT in place it could destroy it.

Since the Toyota motors still have gasoline being sprayed into the ports and cleaning valves as well as direct injection. I have a 2018 Tacoma TRD off road with the V6 DS4 motor.

This type of test is simply a total waste of time and here is why. If anyone has enough common sense in your brain should know that molecular structure of carbon atom is almost as hard as diamond because of very similar bonding to diamond. Do you really believe any liquid poured into gas tank or added to crank case will decrease or clean up the amount of carbon build up? The answer is no. The only way to clean up the carbon build up mess as bad as these demonstrated here around the valves is to remove the head off and have complete head job, along with ruined valves and even this, these valves may not become clean as they should be. In such case, replacement should be done. If you are going to do anything right, do it right the first time, rather than doing the half axx job.

The engine needs to be revved up as you do it, that would've made a difference, but it still wouldn't be as good as seafoam aerosol, marvel is good to mix with oil and to add to your fuel. The solvent in it is not that harsh, it's very mild. It works wonders in a crankcase, change the oil and add a 20 percent mixture drive it a few hundred miles then change it again, that oil will be jet black in that little bit of time.

Typically looking into others that have ran cleaners through majority have slipped the hose piece or straw after the throttle body because the throttle body that is not open can collect that liquid material and cause problems to those like my 04' Passat Wagon 1.8T which has a electronic throttle. Using anything other than throttle body cleaner can cause problems to the sensor and possibly to the electric/mechanical door actuator. So next test it probably be a good idea to slide the squirter tip after the throttle body door. Even if no issues arise unless you hit the gas enough to open the door some it's pretty much safer to avoid the risk of damaging that area. Had to replace mine on the Passat due to it's 228k on that and even though I didn't purchase original replacement I also had to pay out to have it reprogrammed. Love your vids tho. If you have a GDI engine, put an oil catch can in-between the crankcase breather and the intake. With direct injection the gas detergents don't clean the valves. The oil catch can catches the oil particulates before the recycle back in through your intake.

Once cleaned, i installed an oil catchment tank to traps all the unbrunt oily fumes that deposited at the intakemanifold later sucked into the valves n gunked it again. So far after 10000 miles, i rechecked the intake valves and it still looks clean with minimal deposits inside it. Thin out the MMO with a light oil, maybe B12 or some other intake cleaner, so that you can get good atomization. The shape of that intake manifold all but guarantees that unatomized MMO will just pool at the bottom as the air whizzes by. Then when you brake or accelerate the MMO will slosh into the intake valves. Or maybe it will just sit in the manifold reducing manifold volume until it evaporates, leaks out or solidifies.

What in god’s heaven did I just watch? You asked what we think and this is what I think. I think you should begin using a good quality synthetic oil with enough detergents to loosen up all of that gunk. Better yet, engine flush that engine two or maybe three times. Since you’re on MMO, you can use MMO as an engine flush. Add the thing to the crankcase and drive around for a few hundred miles and change the oil and repeat. I have seen build up here and there, but not as bad as what you have on that Hyundai. Or might want to consider using something stronger than MMO as an engine flush. Adding MMO to the fuel will not do a whole lot to that amount of build up. My recommendation is to conduct an engine flush per month and monitor/adjust.

So far, IMHO, the CRC has done the best job cleaning with the least amount of effort. Again, imho, if you use the CRC a few times during the vehicle's life from new, no issues. Or, just install a catch can after the warranty period. But, Scotty Kilmer does warn about using the CRC late in a DIF vehicle's life that there is a possibility of loosened carbon deposits possibly clogging up the catalytic converter(s). That's why i think it's best to apply a treatment early in a DFI vehicles life. Doubly so if it's got forced induction.

I've used Marvel(MMO) for over 50 years. You have to bring the engine up to temp, put in enough MMO to stall the engine and then let it sit for a few days. Then start it and run it at highway speeds for 1/2 hour. Then check the valves. To clean the rings, combustion chamber, and valves add MMO at 6 oz per ten gallons of gas. It will take 6 months of normal driving but it will clean the inside of the engine and the MMO prevents corrosion in the fuel system. MMO needs time to soak into the carbon. MMO has saved dozens of smoking engines for me. As part of your pretest data do a full compression test set too.

@@NATESINTERACTIVEAUTO Marvel is an "upper cylinder lubricant" and my grandfather taught me to use it on my first car in 1967. I tried several other things but for carbon in cylinders MMO is the best. It will also help keep fuel systems from corroding but for cleaning fuel systems I use Gumout or similar. I am a curious type(engineer) so, in 1970 when I was building a 1964 Chevelle drag racing car, I experimented on an engine. I was given(lots of free cars in those days) a 1963 Impala with a 283 V-8 with power pack heads. The engine was badly carboned so I decided to try an experiement. I poured an entire can(pt) of MMO into the carb while she was running. I only poured as much as she could take until the end when I dumped enough to stall her. I let it sit for 3 days and then started her up. She smoked like a Uniroyal stack. This lasted about 15 minutes or more when the smoking stopped , I brought her into the garage. A day or two later I pulled the heads to start the rebuild job. The heads and piston tops were fairly clean. That convinced me.
Since then I have obtained atleast 9 cars that were smoking a bit. I tuned them and did compression checks(part of a proper tuneup). I then ran them with MMO in the gas. After 3 to 6 months they didn't smoke and the compression was much better. With long term use, MMO will free up the rings so that they can seal against the cylinder walls. Many times the rings get stuck in the piston ring grooves because of carbon build up. This prevents the rings from sealing against the cylinder walls. When freed up compression goes up and smoking goes down. I also use it in all of my small engines. Years ago, I talked to an aircraft mechanic from the 1930s, he said that they used MMO in all their engines to keep them running longer. Merry Christmas

Clean that much and it's going to burn, leak oil. I used to use it consistently but with catalytic converters have stopped.

It's not made to spray in like that. now your air intake is going to be all oily and catch dirt

More than anything MMO is a LUBRICANT; Oil Enhancer & Fuel Treatment (stabilizer). It is NOT as harsh as Sea Foam or B-12, those are definitely straight up SOLVENTS (hence the metal cans). I believe CRC has the best intake valve cleaner so far, again; a harsh chemical in a METAL can.

Yeah theres alot of good proof as to what your saying in the test i performed

I agree too. Even diesel or kerosene has more detergent qualities than MMO. That's why I used b100 diesel and isopropyl alcohol mix as it worked same as CRC and costs a lot less. Biggest issue is time. It takes several treatments to make a difference. Or remove intake and do manually like I did. It's quite easy

Yeah thats really great idea i would like to try isopropyl mix. What a about mixing the most powerful together and if so which ones ?

Really what were the issues from the fuel pump and how long did you need to use mmo ?

suppose to add the mmo on your fuel tank or engine oil. its not a valve cleaner. read the instructions

The before and after pics were the same. It’s not realistic to expect much change with just one application. It does work well over time. Be patient I feel it’s a good product.
