Ascolano Irl Of course there will be problems at first, it might seem impossible, ending slavery in America seemed impossible but hey then the Civil War came about and slavery was abolished. There should be a less border control universally.
Ascolano Irl I don’t think you got what I said, in fact you are changing the topic. What I am saying is that’s there is a need for a radical redefinition of a “national boundary”, there has to be a better alternative to passports, something more efficient than border control and visas, equal access to all services regardless of citizenship status. Maybe that’s too idealistic, but nonetheless possible
Lone Starr I would like to add that many times, culture and language define political borders. When a single culture inhabits a single country, it's called a nation state. Certain nation states include Japan and Germany. In fact, World War 1 and 2 were partially caused by the lack of Nation states in Europe. Because of this, most borders in Europe are defined specifically with culture and language in mind. This doesn't apply to many countries however, especially in Africa, where most of the borders have been superimposed with little regard to culture by former colonizers, leading to years of struggle and conflict. Nation states exist specifically to stop this kind of devicive conflict between ethnicities and cultures. Wow, sorry. I didn't mean to go on a tangent like this. I guess I'm having flashbacks from my Human Geography class, lol.

This reminds me of something I've heard before - "a language is a dialect with an army and a navy." Languages are surprisingly hard to define! One of the key differentiators is mutual intelligibility (whether or not you can understand each other) - but speakers of different dialects of chinese can't understand each other, yet speakers of spanish and portuguese languages sometimes can!
This doesn’t even get into asymmetric intelligibility, where speakers of one dialect/language can understand the other much better than the inverse (e.g. the Portuguese people I know can often understand quite a bit of Spanish, but Spanish people generally can’t make anything of European Portuguese).
As a Southeast Asian, I always think of those Chinese so-called "dialects" aren't actually dialects, they are separate languages written in the same writing system. I think it's the same as English and German that both are written in Latin alphabet, but being two separate languages.

+Renn Li Taiwan's recognition as a country is more and more out of border over the past few years. Some suggested that Taiwan is a country as R.O.C. in Taiwan. Some claims that Taiwan is a part of unclaimed territory of US(Which a bit weird theory imo) Some thinks that Taiwan should (Or already) become a independent country. (Which the next party run for office DPP bias to) Which will piss off China the most. Like some people and legislators in Taiwan likes to stick stickers of Taiwan on their ROC passport. Which I think it's a bit of stupid act.
Holly Creavin It's still controversial topic here. And I guess you arrived in the south of Taiwan. Where most of the people support DPP there. In my opinion, Taiwan really doesn't have the problem to be independent or not. I just don't understand why there are some people denies the existence of ROC, where the government that rules Taiwan is ROC... We are indeed ROC, not PRC, fact. (Say me biased, but this is the truth.)
Holly Creavin Oh, so you went to the Northern Taiwan? Not surprise. And that old palace IS an art museum. It's called the National Palace Museum, it's really famous. It's home for some the artifacts that were from the original National Palace in Beijing. The indigenous culture museum...don't know what is it...
Please make a video on the issues in the Middle East. I understand that is extremely broad, but I think it is one of the most important topics today. Please give this suggestion a thumbs up so that CGP Grey can see it!
James Bond Though China is a HUGE trading partner for the west, USA already has massive economic problems, getting a trade embargo from China would make USA collapse, and so most of the western world..
Am from Taiwan and thanks for mentioning Taiwan! It's nice to have more people understand about Taiwan and.. all the China or Chinese Taipei or whatever etc. Great video!
I'm Taiwanese too (my family has been there for generations--over a century, and I have some aboriginal blood). What I find odd, is that Taiwan has its own currency, laws, political system, passports, health care system...none of which have changed in the last few decades, and none of which looks anything like the PRC's. Still, Taiwan was more widely recognized as a country in the 80s and 90s than it has been in the last decade, as China's gained economic and political power--essentially bullying other countries to at least stay silent on Taiwan's status. Kind of funny that the status of one country/territory/place (Taiwan) can be called into question based on the fluctuating power of another country (China)...(but as this video illustrates, that happens all the time, given that whether the UN recognizes a country is based on the opinions of a few select countries...) In any case, glad that Taiwan was brought up in this video!
In germany, there is a '3-factor-definition' for countries. Regarding that, everything is a country that has - a state people - a state territory - a state government
4:46 Sealand is also very complicated, and moreso than just a crazy person with a flag. It was illegally built in international waters, making it not technically the property of England.
GAO Xiang Both you and Taiwan are provinces of the only rightful China; the Empire of China. Both of your existences brings shame to your ancestors who fought to protect the emperor. You should both be ashamed of yourselves.
GAO Xiang Republics are flawed, and nothing but Western propaganda that you have fallen for. There is no logic or morals to majority rule. Your ancestors defended the Empire, it was only after being attacked by the West that you decided to become traitors.
I still think of Taiwan as the Republic of China. The Republic was formed in the 20s, disrupted by the Japanese, and overthrown on the mainland by the Communists. One people, two lands, two governments.
only the people in china couldn't use youtube, you think the laws can restrict the bureaucrats? also Taiwan's official name is Republic of China which includes the territorial controls over Kinmen and Matsu island under the title of China Fujian Pronvince.
2:50 As a Taiwanese, I could tell that even Chinese people knows that Taiwan didn't belong to them. For example, the package you bought on the internet with Chinese companies can't have the same delivery fee as in the China if you live in Taiwan.
Yes, just just think that the government in Taiwan is illegitimate. Just like in any other territorial dispute like with Crimea or Abkhazia. It doesn't prove anything, if you want to do business you have to acknowledge the de-facto situation, but you can also recognise it as completely illegitimate and illegal.
In the United States, deliveries to Hawaii or Alaska are usually more expensive even though they are 100% states of the union same as New York or Texas. Many places will advertise that they deliver to the 48 contiguous states (50 minus Alaska and Hawaii) or that advertised rates only apply to the 48 contiguous states. So unfortunately the delivery fee does not prove a country.

Odd thing I just noticed - when CGP Gray says "some countries come" he shows South Sudan, yet on the world map, it shows a world before South Sudan's independence.
I'm impressed. 9 years later and two of his video suggestions (0:30) are actually correct.
00:11 Why there is a damn creeper on the right ?
he did that in other videos. I think he's done that in more episodes too.
Oh no. That does not look good for un.
Year 2030 minecraft declares independence
Aw man...

There's UK on Olympics. But if talking about football national teams - no UK, but England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland... And Great Britain is not even federation. That always confuses my pupils.
And what about Sovereign Military Order of Malta?
+Andriy Vasylenko Actually, there is a Great Britain Olympic team. Not a UK one.
Also, despite Wales having its own football national team, Welsh clubs compete in the English Championship
Ambie Gibson Lol
Ambie Gibson Another +1 to all of the UK/GB/ENG story))

Why are all countries female? Is it so that you can make their skirts the flags? Because if so that's really cute and a good idea.Keep up the great content :D
+King Duck It's because countries are referred to as shes.
most country's are referred to she like "mother russia" and stuff like that but Germany refers it to a guy "father land"
+David Crooning Brazilians call their country "Mother" but still refer to it using male articles and pronouns. It's weird.
Yea...But Why Make Me A Country Called The Repulbic Of Wiginstine!
"It's a she" and "the motherland" "mother russia"
Certain countries would use Fatherland...Germany comes to mind.
I love how you just showed a picture of the West Bank, and was like "fuuuuuuck this".

make a separate video about Taiwan like you did Macau and Hong Kong XD
+Renn Li
Taiwan's recognition as a country is more and more out of border over the past few years.
Some suggested that Taiwan is a country as R.O.C. in Taiwan.
Some claims that Taiwan is a part of unclaimed territory of US(Which a bit weird theory imo)
Some thinks that Taiwan should (Or already) become a independent country. (Which the next party run for office DPP bias to) Which will piss off China the most.
Like some people and legislators in Taiwan likes to stick stickers of Taiwan on their ROC passport. Which I think it's a bit of stupid act.
Holly Creavin
It's still controversial topic here.
Holly Creavin
What landmarks did you went when you go to Taiwan?
Holly Creavin
Oh, so you went to the Northern Taiwan? Not surprise.
And that old palace IS an art museum. It's called the National Palace Museum, it's really famous. It's home for some the artifacts that were from the original National Palace in Beijing.
The indigenous culture museum...don't know what is it...

Considering recent events, it might be interesting to see the sequel to this video sometime in the nearish future.
Please make a video on the issues in the Middle East. I understand that is extremely broad, but I think it is one of the most important topics today. Please give this suggestion a thumbs up so that CGP Grey can see it!
Olympic is a bit... Special.

193 countries exist.

interesting , the vatican is the only male country

Am from Taiwan and thanks for mentioning Taiwan! It's nice to have more people understand about Taiwan and.. all the China or Chinese Taipei or whatever etc. Great video!
lalalalalalalalalalalalala cao ni ma
I'm Taiwanese too (my family has been there for generations--over a century, and I have some aboriginal blood). What I find odd, is that Taiwan has its own currency, laws, political system, passports, health care system...none of which have changed in the last few decades, and none of which looks anything like the PRC's. Still, Taiwan was more widely recognized as a country in the 80s and 90s than it has been in the last decade, as China's gained economic and political power--essentially bullying other countries to at least stay silent on Taiwan's status. Kind of funny that the status of one country/territory/place (Taiwan) can be called into question based on the fluctuating power of another country (China)...(but as this video illustrates, that happens all the time, given that whether the UN recognizes a country is based on the opinions of a few select countries...)
In any case, glad that Taiwan was brought up in this video!

In germany, there is a '3-factor-definition' for countries.
Regarding that, everything is a country that has
- a state people
- a state territory
- a state government
That makes Taiwan a country. And Vatican.
That makes all dutch provinces countries, as all have a, though smaller, branch of government

Hi, I am a Taiwanese. Thank you introduce the situation between China and us(Taiwan, R.O.C, Chinese Taipei, China Taipei...whatever you say)
It's just Taipei......(China doesn't own us)
I still think of Taiwan as the Republic of China. The Republic was formed in the 20s, disrupted by the Japanese, and overthrown on the mainland by the Communists. One people, two lands, two governments.
2:54 **CGP Grey is banned in China**

The olympics has an extra country for independent people who dont want to go underneath a flag.
What's the name of that extra country? Or should I say, where is it located?
Joseph Rain It's not really a country... try to recognize the Olympics as a country, and imagine it includes the whole world. Okay?
2:50 As a Taiwanese, I could tell that even Chinese people knows that Taiwan didn't belong to them. For example, the package you bought on the internet with Chinese companies can't have the same delivery fee as in the China if you live in Taiwan.
Yes, just just think that the government in Taiwan is illegitimate. Just like in any other territorial dispute like with Crimea or Abkhazia. It doesn't prove anything, if you want to do business you have to acknowledge the de-facto situation, but you can also recognise it as completely illegitimate and illegal.
Tankies seething en
this is a joke right?
In the United States, deliveries to Hawaii or Alaska are usually more expensive even though they are 100% states of the union same as New York or Texas. Many places will advertise that they deliver to the 48 contiguous states (50 minus Alaska and Hawaii) or that advertised rates only apply to the 48 contiguous states.
So unfortunately the delivery fee does not prove a country.
the province of taiwan is to china what the confederacy was to usa
sealand is more of a country then you think. at one point germany invaded and 20 years later they came beack in a helicopter and with shotguns and imprisoned a german for 9 months. It has a royal family who have ruled for decades too.

Geography lessons in school might have been more interesting if we got more thought provoking lessons like this rather than just being tasked with remembering the names of a bunch of countries, labeling some of their major cities and natural features, and then coloring them in on blank maps.
