    Bryan Cranston directed this one. Got to introduce us to the badass twins, and also got to direct himself giving the most awkward speech ever. His daughter was one of the students in that scene.

    I figured that the crawling scene in the beginning of the episode was some kind of religious ritual, but I had to look it up to find out more. This is what I found out:
    “They are visiting a shrine of Santa Muerte (Saint Death). In Mexico, she is a popular folk saint/deity who is the patron saint of (among other things) drug dealers and smugglers, and is often invoked to protect against violent death. Traditionally, a worshiper would crawl on his knees on his way to visit the shrine.”

      It is. When the Spanish colonized Mexico, they brought Catholicism with them. But the native Mesoamericans carried over aspects of their former religions and incorporated them into their practicing of Christianity, including a noted respect and reverence for death. In the Aztec religion, Death was personified as a goddess named Mictecacihuatl (forget trying to pronounce it), and it's believed she was the source of inspiration for Santa Muerte.
      Partially as a result of her inclusion in this series, it has been assumed by many that she is, first and foremost, a patron saint of the cartel and other unsavory types. It makes sense given her grim aesthetic, but her cult is really a lot less nefarious than that. Worship of her is primarily associated with healing, protection and safe delivery to the afterlife. As you can see from her shrine, people leave small offerings, usually a possession that belonged to a loved one who has recently died. The offering is meant as a payment to Santa Muerte to guide the recently deceased safely to Heaven.
      The practice is not dissimilar from the ancient Greek practice of placing coins over a deceased person's eyes so that they can pay the ferryman to carry them over the river Styx.

    Gotta have a slow opener after that season finale in season 2. Gotta set up the chessboard for the new season. This show is the pinnacle of setting up the situations and consequences for later episodes. Too many shows out nowadays seem to ignore past actions or occasionally pull a few small details from prior episodes. This show makes an artform of it.
    Peace

      @@drakedunn638 It's not like when he first said Heisenberg to Tuco that he was channeling some demonic entity from another dimension. He just made up this criminal name on the spot. He's got a good poker face and a big ego. He doesn't always get the chance to gratify it in his real life. I feel like Walter White maintaining integrity adds to the story by making it about a man who goes from good to evil, rather than a man with an evil side that was always within him. As soon as Walter decided to make meth he slowly became more and more desensitized to the things he had to do.

  • @canahid1
    @canahid1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I think Lacey and I are on the same page. I didn't watch BB when it aired. My sister suggested the show to me and described it as "a rather downtrodden high school science teacher is diagnosed with lung cancer and begins making meth with a former student to make the money for his treatments and to provide for his family. The situations continually escalate and the show does an excellent job of making you understand the characters' reasons for their actions. You are constantly wondering, "How are they going to get out of this?"" I resisted watching it for a while because meth and the meth life is horrible. I wanted to avoid a show that might glorify it. Eventually I watched. BB is an excellent show and deserves all the praise it has received (and more awards than it has received) for writing and acting. However, my brain will not accept it as my favorite show of all time, as it is considered by many others. I have figured out why. Although the CHARACTERS are wonderfully drawn and complex and serve the story, I do not like a single one of them. That is, there is no one I would like to have in my real life. Contrast that with TWD in which there are many characters with which I could have personal relationships. --My two cents only. We all have our own opinions.

    The burning money bit was a sign that Walter and Heisenberg are at war for control of his body. This double life is only going to be harder to pull off as the show proceeds. If you aren't convinced of Bryan Cranston's acting ability yet, he's off the charts in the next 3 seasons.

    Steve, I got what you were saying. When you connected with Janes dad. You even stated it! Its nothing to do with Jesse. I suspect these people must have seen the whole show. And have a connection with Jesses character. Going back and seeing this incident, they feel Jesse pain. But as of yet, the show hasnt really shown Jesses reaction fully. Just a glimpse. They need to realize they are pulling from different info than you have. Hope that made sense. I didnt see your reaction the way they did.
    Lacey, Im with you! Lol I love this show. But I no longer had any empathy for Walt, because of what Heisenberg did to Jane...and Jesse...and her dad. Up until that point, I could see what Walt did. And WHY he did it. Could even see his justification for his actions. There isnt a single thing i would not do for my family. But no way I would kill, unless it were a direct and imminent threat, to my loved ones. That was a road too far for me. Love watching him in the show. But yeah! I dont like Heisenberg!

    Every single channel that has reviewed Breaking Bad - I mean EVERY single one - has wondered why the coyote (i.e., the driver of the van/truck) doesn't just play dead.
    I don't think many people have a great idea of what it's like to be shot and how rational thought doesn't really play a big part in the process.

    "That night, I had a dream. I drifted off thinking about happiness, birth and new life. But now I was haunted by a vision of doom. They were horrible. The Twins of the Apocalypse. Two men with all the powers of Hell at their command. They could turn the day into night and lay waste to everything in their path.
    They were especially hard on little things, the helpless and gentle creatures. They left a scorched earth in their wake, befouling even the sweet desert breeze that whipped across their brows. I didn't know where they came from, or why. I didn't know if they were dream or vision. But I feared that I myself had unleashed them..." - an extract from Raising Arizona, adapted to Walt's perspective

    When Walter gives his speech in the school gym, I think rather than speak encouraging words to everyone he is trying to justify that its not as bad as it could have been for himself. I think he feels partly responsible for it happening, seeing as how he let Jane die and her father, emotionally wrecked, caused two planes to collide.
