Hey Matt I have a problem I have a 04 avalanche 1500 and my temp sensor only goes up a quarter way not half way regardless how long it's been sitting. I have changed the water pump thermostat and coolant temp sensor and still does it what could be the problem
I almost spit my mountain dew out when i saw the knock sensor mounted to the front of the engine. 8:17 I love a good workaround. I actually determined whick one of mine was good and hooked it to both wires heading to the computer. Its still working for over a year now.
I have a 2007 tahoe, I kept getting low oil pressure alarm, with the help of youtube and ppl. Like you I diagnosed what the problem was and fixed it myself.
Oh man where do I start lol. I thought it was the oil pressure sensor so I changed it out the easy way just reaching back there and having the right extension and swivel attachment, but that wasn’t it. Then I changed out the little pressure filter that goes inside the oil pressure sensor hole and it was caked so I changed it out and that fixed the problem temporarily. It would throw out the alarm a week later. I got really good at changing those out really fast lol. The root of the problem ended up being that my coolant was leaking into my oil and that it why the filter kept getting clogged. So I figured that I had a blown head gasket. I had 249k miles on the tahoe at the time this was just a few months ago. I watched numerous tutorials on here to figure out how to do it. There is actually a really good one that showed step by step and so I went ahead and did it. A weekend job took me 10 days. But I did it and did it right. I changed out the head gaskets for both sides, the air intake manifold gaskets the exhaust gaskets which was a pain. New fuel injectors and spark plugs and cleaned out the carburetor ect. I spent probably around $700 in parts plus tools I needed. I just took the tahoe to Mexico on a 20 hour drive through dirt roads that were in bad shape and on the way back it took me 21 hrs to get back from Guanajuato because of the damn traffic and construction and with no problems except that my ac went out. Right now it has 254k miles on it. I hope to make it to 300k and more.

It will be challenged to replace this sensor on Avalanche (2002 Avalanche required use a special socket). I replaced wit Dorman sensor from Amazon ( I think that was knockoff) . You like the trucks more than me haha. Never use the cheap sensors. I did the same thing and now I'm going to have to replace it with the Delphi sensor.
@@MattsShop GMT800- good trucks, affordable and easy to work on it. You need 2 jack stands, bottle jack and basic tools. and scanner. Only one problem- break lines. Thank you! I’m doing my first LS swap and in the process of removing the wiring harness and engine from an 05 Suburban and this helped me tremendously as I wanted to label all of the connectors on the wiring harness properly.
I had a knock sensor error and when I pulled them the one connector had just disintegrated so it wasn't attached the other crumbled when I pulled and the harness was brittle bent it a little and the insulation broke exposing bare wires. What very poor engineering job on this sub-system.
Coming here from owning a 90k1500 Silverado. Recently bought a 03 6.0 Silverado to keep the miles off my 90 and now almost want to do the same to the 03 haha. Genuinely appreciate you and your videos to help me diagnose and find sny possible issues that may arise with my 03 and my dads 01 tahoe. Cleaned them up and runs absolutely amazing now. Will continue to follow up on your videos to these trucks to keep my in great shape❤️🤝🏼
Thanks so much for these videos, dude. I have a 1500 and 2500 2004 sierra, and these videos are great help. I'm having electrical issues. Have you done a video of all the ground locations yet? Thanks again
Huge help!! Could you show where the coolant temp sensor at 13:11 in the video connects? Mine is missing the backside and the wire that connects to it. Have a new sensor to install, but nowhere to hook up the electrical connection. Love the videos and info. THANK YOU!
Hey Matt, could you please do a video talking about the fuel pressure regulator and how they are in different spots on some of the 04 4.8's. I bought a regulator thinking I could easily swap it out. Turns out I have to drop the fuel tank to get to it. Same for the fuel filter. Think it would be a very helpful video.

An engines knock sensors are constantly listening for knocking in the engine, which is indicating a either advanced or retarded ignition cycle. When a knock occurs in the stroke it means that the ignition occurring from the spark plug is occurring either too early, or too late in the pistons stroke, so either its firing off as the piston is still in its compression movement (traveling upwards) or as its already begun its descent in what is referred to as the "Power" stroke. In either case it leads to a loss in generated power. The knock sensor, having picked up on this miscalculation, emits a small voltage signal sent to the pcm/ecm which then rectifies the issue by advancing or retarding the ignition timing. When a sensor goes bad (or the circuit wiring is somehow interrupted from either disconnection due to broken or disconnected wiring or a faulty connector prong contact) the computer registers this and will not be able to adjust the ignition timing and in many instances in electronically controlled transmission driven systems will even trip the transmission itself into "Limp" mode, ensuring that the vehicle is not able to be "driven into the grave" by an unawares or unconcerned driver. It does not ALWAYS happen, but in many instances I have come across, if the vehicle is continually operated with one or both knock sensors faulted, limp mode occurs in the transmission at some point in the near future if the vehicle is continued to be used with the sensors out of commission. Hopefully that explained things well enough. Cheers 🍻
When the computer detects knocking the sensor vibrates and the computer cuts back the ignition timing and runs in a sort of limp mode to help protect the engine from damage.
Hey Matt, thank you for what you do, helping us keep these old trucks going. Quick question - for upstream o2 sensors, I see the Bosch 15150 you linked for $61 and also found a Bosch 15284 for $22, also on amazon/rock auto too. I know you said don't go with cheap sensors, but considering they're both Bosch, I wonder if there's a reason you like the 15150? Is it just for your specific year chevys? I see the connectors are different. Mine's an 05, was just surprised to see the price difference. Thank you.
PLEASE help!!! I didn't see in your video the one sensor that I'm needing help identifying...I thought I was replacing the camshaft position sensor on the lower underneath part of the motor towards the center under the belt, it even looked like a camshaft position sensor when removing but my new part will not fit back in, it's too long...is this a different sensor? I have a 2011 gmc sierra 1500 sle with a 5.3 v8
That's different on a 2011 they moved some sensors around. I believe the camshaft position sensor is in the center of the engine to the right of the crankshaft pulley. They might have sold you one from an older Silverado. If you take the old one with you they should be able to get you the right part.
Lots of good info here. Thanks for posting. You ran over the O2 sensors pretty quickly. Which one is up stream and which is down stream? I replaced one up stream with a Bosch 15284. Amazon says it’s up stream while Autozone says it’s down stream. The one I removed has several holes with a narrower body than the new Bosch which has a single hole and a much larger body. Also the heater code is displayed on my scanner along with O2, evap, and cat. I can’t reset them or smog my 2003 5.3 suburban while they are on. Do you gave any advice? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, M, I have a 2001 GMC Sierra. Start up in the morning really rough. And fuel smells weird when running. dont know if it's rich or lean? I'm still changing out sensors, though , so I was trying to take off the air idle sensoron the throttle body and one of the screws stripped any tips on that?😊
Subscribed! Thanks for the good content. I got a 2004 Escalade with the 6.0 Vortec. It takes a while to start in the morning, but then it’ll start up normally if I decide to start it up again right away. If I let it sit for a few hours, then it’ll take a few cranks for it to crank over. I seen this video you made and you mentioned the Cam Shaft Position sensor will make it take long to crank over. Thing is, I’m getting codes for, ‘P0651’ & ‘P0452’ It’s driving me crazy. Sometimes the codes clear themselves out on their own and come right back. & yes I know one is a 5 volt reference code, and the other code is a Evap code for the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor. But I’m just wondering if It’s that simple as ohhh I need to replace the Fuel pressure sensor, & thats why possibly my truck is taking longer to start. I’m just wondering if that’s the right direction to look at. Basically what I’m saying is, would that sensor be causing that long cranking? Would love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Oh,, & I checked the wiring harness around the engine bay, everything looked well protected, I know there’s a spot on the side where the battery is, that the harness runs over the head of the engine that is prone to damage, and that looked fine, it’s on a plastic clamp sitting nicely not touching the motor. Sooo idk 🤷♂️ Any thoughts helps Thanks!
Hey Matt, I have a question my 2006 gmc sierra at idle it gets stuck on 1000-1500 RPM until I hit the brakes and it calms down and then revs back up to 1000-1500 RPM. I’ve changed o2 sensors and nothing any ideas?
So with the camshaft position sensor if it doesn’t start on first try but starts right up on the second crank what else could it be if I’ve replaced the camshaft position sensor and it’s still doing it? I’m assuming the crankshaft position sensor but I don’t want to go just replacing sensors if they aren’t actually having problems
Hey Matt I have an 00 v6 sierra. I’m having a slight hesitation at start up when pressing gas pedal it’s very sluggish until I get past 5 mph than it takes off. When I press gas it almost feels like a misfire or exhaust is clogged I can floor it and it won’t go at all till it goes past 5-10 mph. I’ve gone thru 2 fuel pumps in last 6 yrs. Replaced fuel filters and oil service done every 3k and spark plugs regularly done also any suggestions?
Hey Matt merry Christmas I have an 03 gmc 5.3 it has a hard start i changed cam sensor feul pump pressure regulator cleaned MAF sensor all this happened when I changed out the injectors any idea thanks
Can get bad new injectors, some guys test them first before installing. Could be your issue. These days it's common to get bad parts that are brand new across the board with any part! Good luck 🤞
Hello I have a massive problem with the cam shaft position sensor code p0342. I have already replaced it with the crankshaft and I still have a long crank start. I also ran the wire from the sensor directly pin to the computer and still same problem. Any idea on what it would be I what I could do?? Would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
I would look at the signal at the camshaft sensor with an oscilloscpe or at least a multimeter and make sure you have the voltage that's supposed to be there. You gotta get Delphi sensors.
I have an issue with my 04 trans. Recently rebuilt, at low rpm in od it sometimes acts like it slips it'll downshift then shift up back forth back n forth
Hey was wondering if you could help me with some information? I have a 07 Chevy Silverado and a lot of the fuses in the main fuse box under the hood is grounding to the motor some people say it supposed to and some people says it is not supposed to? So my question is any of the fuses supposed to ground in the main fuse box back to the motor?
what do you do on an aftermarket DBC (nick Williams) throttle body when the TPS won't go below .04 without drilling out the mounting holes a little bit?
Hey buddy I have a 1999 Silverado 1500 automatic, and I'm having an issue, when i get to 4th gear and let off the gas and then push back down on the gas it sputters pretty bad. Do you know what I'm issue could be??
I put a new axdelco in my 05 chevy Silverado and when tyrn in the engine it goes from hot to back cold abd not reading wgat can i do fix to go nack to normal sir
I have a 99 Chevy ls 5.3 got the engine redone with stage 2 cam and e85 and dyno tune but don’t start at first try then do another cycle and it turns on!? What can it be ?? Also replaced camshaft sensor and idle air control valve (both)
Hi, i have 2001 vortec 8100. I have issue with acceleration, it feels heavy but eventually picks up and go. Another issue is whissing sound from the exhaust when i push the gas paddle. Can u suggest what i shall look for?
Do you know what this means? I just replaced my mass airflow sensor cause I got a P0101 code on my truck so I replaced it and I still had the code. What do you think it could be 03 Silverado 1500 HD 6.0.
Hey man, you're awesome. Thank you for helping make sense of the senseless. I was hoping how well your erudition is with the complete insanity of a 1997 chevy siverado k1500, 5.0L, 4x4, 4L60-E, Z71, has an air conditioner lol, and is an electric push button four wheel drive. Some parts of it use standard bolts, sometimes it's metric 🤯. Anyway I need help figuring out all the ground lines. It seems to me, the ones I'm aware of (apparently there's one hiding inside the body of the rear passenger window snap open window) are completely broken and disintegrated. Idk how anything is even operating. I've had four mechanics completely run me. They've done everything from loosen fuses, to removing fuses completely, taken censors I've replaced myself and swapping them out with their old ones, broke my drive shaft, completely fucked up my power steering, cross threaded my rear differential bolts, lied about putting new yolks on when fixing the drives shaft the mechanic before that one broke, completely removed my thermostat, never finished a the welding job on a CAT delete, and among other suspected things not onenof them ever suggested replacing a single sensor. Meanwhile the gromit for the PCV valve was an obvious replacement even to my amateur eyes. Most of this I have fixed and I will never let anyone touch this truck again. Mayne you, that's it. I live in Summerville SC. If I remember correctly, and I'm knucklehead so i could be wrong, you are a SC guy. Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope. Any advice, or leads to diagrams/specs, or even work on the truck yourself , I would gladly compensate you. 🫡👨🏭👨🔧 now back to work I go. I appreciate you whether you respond or not.
So, does a 2001 Silverado (basically the same) not have an oil sensor like a vvt? I’m getting the p0013 code but I can’t find this sensor. Or is this an actuator. I so give up it’s stalling out and I’ve checked wires and volts and continuity and part changing and resets and clear codes and prayed to Jesus fing Christ
The IAC and TPS on my '03 Z71 are integrated into the throttle body and can't be replaced. Have to buy a new [electronic] throttle body for beaucoup more bucks.

can a bad crank shaft position sensor cause a no crank condition when starting engine?

Thanks, yes it does built into the drivers side valve cover.

This is an awesome video. How's about telling us what the readings for each sensor should be? 👍
That sounds like a good part 2 👍
Good stuff! But doesn't the Silverado have a transmission temp sensor? Thanks for sharing.
That's not an engine sensor. 🤣 It does but there is no gauge on the 1500's it's monitored by the computer and you get a light on the dash.
Thanks for the information on the seniors very helpful thanks
Love the videos cause I have an 04 and 06 silverado
Awesome! Keep them runnin

I know you said don't go with cheap sensors, but considering they're both Bosch, I wonder if there's a reason you like the 15150? Is it just for your specific year chevys? I see the connectors are different. Mine's an 05, was just surprised to see the price difference. Thank you.
Damn dude, I wish I made this video lol. Freaking awesome nice job.
Man great content!!!!
Thank you!!!
I have a 1999 Chevy Suburban with 348K on the engine and virtually no problems. 5.7 vortec. I want to keep it going for as long as I can
What scan tool do you recommend that has all live data option
One question matt how do you feel about cutting evaporator out of plastic housing compared to complete dash removal
@MattsShop thank you, I'll try to get the old part together but honestly most of it crumbled to pieces while trying to remove it
I’m having electrical issues with my cluster do you have any advice
Start with grounds!! There's a couple of fuses under the hood for the dash cluster. The dash clusters can have solder points that go bad.
@@MattsShop what ground straps should I buy would u have an Amazon link? Before I check out the hood static ground strap
What size socket is the oil pressure senser?
Its a special socket
$15-25 in any auto parts stors.
You are my Hero
You're my hero!
Matt what cause this reduced power engine?
Thanks, M,
I have a 2001 GMC Sierra. Start up in the morning really rough. And fuel smells weird when running. dont know if it's rich or lean?
I'm still changing out sensors, though , so I was trying to take off the air idle sensoron the throttle body and one of the screws stripped any tips on that?😊
I love the 03 tahoe things a beast
I bet it is!
Is driverside or passenger side Bank 1 sensor 2..? On this truck. Thank you
Driverside Bank 1
Passenger Bank 2
I just perched a 2003 gmc sierra 1500 hd 6.0 that says Vertec as well. Would this videos help me fix what is needed on this kind of truck
Yes, the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 Vortec V8 engines are basically the same thing.
I lost the bolt to the camshaft sensor do you know the size please!
Hey question I have a 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500HD that runs good cool but starts to want to die when it gets hot any ideas?
Temp sensor?
Thank you
You're welcome

Thanks for the good content.
I got a 2004 Escalade with the 6.0 Vortec. It takes a while to start in the morning, but then it’ll start up normally if I decide to start it up again right away. If I let it sit for a few hours, then it’ll take a few cranks for it to crank over.
I seen this video you made and you mentioned the Cam Shaft Position sensor will make it take long to crank over.
Thing is,
I’m getting codes for,
‘P0651’ &
‘P0452’
It’s driving me crazy.
Sooo idk 🤷♂️
Any thoughts helps
Thanks!
Coolant... temperature sensor.. which one is the best one to buy for my 2004 Chevy Silverado LS 4.8
Hey Matt, I have a question my 2006 gmc sierra at idle it gets stuck on 1000-1500 RPM until I hit the brakes and it calms down and then revs back up to 1000-1500 RPM. I’ve changed o2 sensors and nothing any ideas?
The first thing is to clean the throttle body and make sure it's not sticking. It could be a fuel related issue.
@@MattsShopThank you!
Good luck 🤞
I am unable to find oe camshaft position sensor near me. 2003 Silverado 4.3l .told they don't make the oe anymore
I'd look on RockAuto they probably have Delphi ones.
Mine going out on 5.3 aswell
I would talk to the rebuilder. That doesn't sound right.
Hey matt, quick question I have a 02 Sierra and the rpm gauge stop working a couple days ago. Would you think this is a sensor or a cluster problem?
I have a 2004 gmc sierra 4.8 v8 what would consistently cause p0171 after clearing codes it just comes back and back no other issues with operating
Also replaced camshaft sensor and idle air control valve (both)
I had the Crankshaft Position sensor replaced but it still acts up and those a code about it so I'm wondering if its a wire or something?
Hi, i have 2001 vortec 8100. I have issue with acceleration, it feels heavy but eventually picks up and go. Another issue is whissing sound from the exhaust when i push the gas paddle. Can u suggest what i shall look for?
Thankyou
You’re welcome
Do you know what this means? I just replaced my mass airflow sensor cause I got a P0101 code on my truck so I replaced it and I still had the code. What do you think it could be 03 Silverado 1500 HD 6.0.
Everytime i had to replace exhaust sensor ive had to retread the opening , parts stores have the tap to retread them holes
Yea, they get stuck in there and damage the threads.
Where’s MattsShop at?… I’m pullin up 😂
Your the sht bro 🫡
Haha thanks, I'm wherever you need me to be. 🫡
Why is my 2004 Chevy avalanche z66 5.3 back firing thru the throttle body????? Please help me
Where are you located ,I need some.help.with my tahoe ?
What are the symptoms of a bad knock sensor?
This the same for a 09 Escalade? 6.2 flex fuel.
Did you post this, take it down and repost?
Please dont take down very valuable video!
I did, I forgot the knock sensors, so I added them and re-upload it. I'll never delete useful information 👍
I was forced to install a Hitachi after market throttle body on an 07. Glad I had a scanner to relearn it. GM would not self relearn 😢
I find that stalling issues on these are normally due to a dirty throttle plate.
Yes, that happens a lot too! The throttle gets sticky and it stalls.
I changed the cam shaft and fuel pump and it still struggling to start also after fuel pump replaced my gas meter don’t work
🙏🙏 very informative! I think we all needed these videos about these gmt800 trucks. I’ve watched all of them and subscribed 👍
Had to replace throttle body on my 03 2500 because in cold weather it kept going into limp mode
You left out the fuel tank pressure sensor, which looks similar to the map sensor on the back of the intake manifold .
Fuel tank pressure sensor isn't on the intake on these trucks. Maybe the flex fuel vehicles.
@MattsShop no the sensors just look similar is what I was saying.
Luckily my 05 has been flawless, but thanks for this.
Oh I have a 04 with the 5.3 vortex
So, does a 2001 Silverado (basically the same) not have an oil sensor like a vvt? I’m getting the p0013 code but I can’t find this sensor. Or is this an actuator. I so give up it’s stalling out and I’ve checked wires and volts and continuity and part changing and resets and clear codes and prayed to Jesus fing Christ
The IAC and TPS on my '03 Z71 are integrated into the throttle body and can't be replaced.
Have to buy a new [electronic] throttle body for beaucoup more bucks.
Yup the '03 was the first year they were all one unit.
Great
My code says Bank 1 lean any ideas
Something on the Driver's side exhaust isn't getting enough fuel. You gotta check the fuel trims with the computer.
Was that the p2270 code you got.?
How about 4.2 lilter
Pretty sure my stalling is caused by the oil level switch pigtail. I touched it, truck stalled won't restart
I cut my cats so I don’t have to worry about the o2 sensor 😂
You have to worry about the upstream sensors!
I have a 2006 cats eye headlights and doesn't even look like those ..are you sure
No mass air flow sensor
👍👍👍
