How To Replace a BMW F30 Engine Air Filter (BMW 3-Series F30 F31 320i 328i 330i xDrive & More)

- ►If you have a BMW F30, you probably already understand why it's important to regularly change the engine air filter.
The engine air filter is responsible for filtering the air that enters the intake before it has a chance to reach the throttle body or turbo. Why is this important? If you have a damaged air filter or no air filter at all, any small dirt, debris, leaves, or other foreign materials brought in through the intake would directly enter your throttle body or turbo and potentially lead to catastrophic failure. If your engine air filter is dirty and clogged up, airflow to the engine would suffer, potentially resulting in poor fuel economy, rough idle, and other symptoms of a "choking" engine.
We recommended that you change out the engine air filter every 30k-40k miles or every tune-up. It's an easy and inexpensive item to replace that gives you peace of mind and prolongs the life of your engine.

For those doing this. Disconnecting the sensor and removing the entire cover off is unnecessary! After removing cover clips......Just lift cover a bit and you can take out filter to replace

Yeah but you should clean the damn air box buddy LOL or it defeats the whole purpose of installing a new filter, that initial gust of air into the intake will just blow all that debris and residue into your filter LOL Don't be lazy

That O2 sensor was tough and on mine I realized that the back clamps before the front makes aligning and clipping in easier. Great video though Thanks! Saved my $100 probably and 2 hours of waiting and driving!!!!

If you find yourself fighting that rubber grommet on the left because it came out of the c-shaped bracket, remove the grommet from the air filter to get it back in the bracket first then slip the airbox back into the grommet.
Thanks for the video. I'm probably overdue to replace both the air filter and cabin filter in my car. There was a service indicator for this on the E9x but not for the F3x!
As per this video he says the filter without the additional grey lining is M sports filter, but on their website (FCP Euro) they are selling that same filter saying that it is a standard filter for cars w/o M Sports package. 😕
Why on your website says the filter with black layer is for msport and the one without is for without msport, so which one is true and gives additional msport sound?
You identified the filters incorrectly. The filter on your right is for the M sport package.

Will be changing mine in 09 328i. Mpg has been lowering and driving habits havent changed. Was last changed about 25k ago. I'm a newb so any tips on whether this is an appropriate action and filter choice is appreciated.
Dealer says 250$, Amazon filter say 20$. 🙏

This was helpful. Unfortunately I broke the tip of a little intake connector that has a small hose line connected to it that feeds up into the engine somewhere. The connector is on the back of the air intake box about two inches from the sensor. What part is that and can just that be replaced? Not the whole box I hope.
Same issue here went to multiple bmw parts stores and they couldn’t find the name of it so I just had to order another oem filter box, how did you go about it just curious

My M Sport car had the Grey Mesh on the filter. In addition on FCP Euro’s site they confirm this, is this not the case?
What are you talking about I have a regular 328ix not M-Sport and the dealer installed airfilter is WITHOUT the gray additional filter layer.

I have the 2014 435i, 6 cylinder twin turbo. It's different from what you are showing. most is the same. Except It has another plug or wire besides the air sensor. Do you know more about mine.

I lost a clip 😭😂 and a rubber, no problem because already wanna put an intake but i tested it out and no leaks, so maybe a zip tie until i get a clip
While changing, I dropped one of the 3 clips that clips the hood cable to the airbox, and I can’t retrieve from the bottom of the car. Know anywhere I can order a replacement?
Never ever ever ever....ever put a rag or any material for that matter to cover a pipe to an open system/engine. If you know you will be doing this maintenance soon then find a plastic or rubber plug possibly around the house OR measure the Diameter of the pipe opening and you can buy them online. Do the job correctly. Opening your intake and not doing it right could be the sole reason something detrimental happens to your engine.

i was waiting for you to take out the airfilterbox itself ,in order the clean it it isen't hold-on by anything now ,................ but you didn't...........
Bmw does over engineering. One handle and you pull filter in hyundai -10 seconds to pull out and 10 seconds to put back.
That lower portion of the airbox that holds the filter isn't held on by anything, you literally could've just taken it out and washed it under the sink. Also, a screwdriver to undo the clips? Lmao.
That clip is 14 dollar in korea. Must be made with german technology
