When I replace the water pump, I also do the thermostat. For a few more dollars you can replace all the hoses which have the plastic connectors that get brittle with high mileage. If you are replacing the hoses, the lowest one drill a 1/4” hole and drain cleanly. As it drains take higher connections apart to vent and drain completely.
Did this today on a non-xdrive and the 2 lower water pump bolts and hidden above the steering motor. The secert is a 10m splines ratcheting wrench and address from behind the subframe. The longer the wrench the better. I used a mountain 10m offset wrench. Thats to abother video for the wrench tip.
Also, consider doing the accessory belt and tensioner. Everything is out of the way when doing the water pump. The air box is much harder to align than what I think is necessary.
Great video really helped. Did thermostat and that flange thank god I did when I pulled the flange off it disintegrated in my hands. Was only a matter of time. I bought a cheap housing sadly even though I always get parts from you guys. Had to swap out o rings because it was leaking. It made a horrible noise when started I think because it wasn’t purged fully. On my SEO d purge in a row now just to be safe.
Great video. Unfortunately, my BMW 428 was a pain in the a** due to the steering rack making it difficult to insert my E12 socket. The work around was using a 3/8 ratchet wrench. I was hoping it would be as easy as you showed hahaha.
I'm in the same situation with my 328i F30.... the 2 bottom bolts are pretty unaccessible due to the steering rack!!! I find a very uncomfortable orientation for my ratchet wrench to remove them, but i'm very worry to see if then I'll be able to put them again.....
I had to move the electric steering rack to get access to the 2 bottom water pump bolts. I fought and fought but couldn't get to it without moving. Same e12 as the water pump and a 17m nut above. Not hard and I wouldn't fight it, just nudge it out of the way.
Awesome video even though cameraman blows. "We will take off this bolt and this bolt." Cameraman stays on your face. "As you can see, the hoses start to collspse" Cameraman stays on your face; quick glace at out-of-focus hose, then back to your face.
Right? Lmfao horrible video. Doesn’t mention how much coolant to add, and said the coolant was 50/50 coolant and anti freeze, did he mean coolant and water??
Hi ,my n20 engine ,water pump keeps running after ive switched off vehicle and drains battery ,i did experience a leaking pipe few days before this i replaced pipe but now i have this problem of the pump continously running ,even if connect a new batter without starting up car the pump starts to run
Is there any possibility to check the pump functioning by applying 12V directly to the pins, without removing it? The bleed procedure is not working in my case but i'm not still sure it is failing.... any idea?
Sir, can I ask, my BMW is F30 320i, yesterday I replaced the thermostart after it was finished I was bleeding but the water pump didn't drain the liquid into the reservoir tube, I have followed the steps, are there any other problems on my BMW?
Sir, may I ask, I have just replaced the Bmw f30 320 i water pump, I tried blading it with the tutorial sir, the water pump therapy doesn't turn on, is there any other way, sir?
Hi just wondering what could possibly cause my car to have a water pump blockage code even after replacing the thermostat and water pump on my n20? Code 20A804
Technically it can but it would be difficult to know that the leak is actually coming from the leaky head gasget. If you had a coolant pressure tester and pressured the system you can pull the plugs and get a camera in the cylinders to see if any coolant got in the cylinders. Multiple ways to check a bad head gasget

I have check the engine light on my 328i 2013, first when I've test with obd2 shows a lin bus error, CD8E10, CD8E12 I've replaced the accumulator regulator anything has been changed. then added CD9010 and 1D2404. A mechanic told me that the pump communication module blocks the signal puts the whole network in emergency and turns on the check engine for that the water pump should replace. He disconnected the water pump and the check engine light stayed off. Should I replace the water pump?
hello!! can i change the straight connector for square connector on the electric water pump? The pumps are the same as the N20 engine with different connectors. I've seen you do this with the high pump connectors.
Great instructional, Gareth. Thanks! Camera work was awesome. That air filter box looked like a meat smoker! Mmmm, ribs.... ?: When should the coolant hoses be replaced, realistically? Age? Mileage?? Thanks.
I've seen other people drain the coolant from the lower radiator hose as well as the water pump. Is that necessary, or is draining from the water pump all that's needed?

Ordered a new water pump off FCP but the Only thing I’m struggling with is trying to get the back two bolts out. Not sure how you got them did you take out anything else to get to the two bolts?
Someone recommended breaking the rest of the plastic “Mickey mouse” piece to remove from the hose so you can slide the clamp off. No need to replace the hose.
The car was filled with orange coolant when I drained it. This is a one family owner (mine) car and to my knowledge nobody has been in the cooling system. Very strange.
Gareth, Did you pre-mix the coolant concentrate ( 50/50 ratio ) with demineralised water as per offical BMW factory recommendation? As always, an impressive tutorial!
Hi Ray, it just helps in filling the system a bit easier, you can run the self-bleed procedure on the water pump a few times to reach the same goal without that tool!

Drivetrain warning and/or engine fan constantly running are signs of a failing water pump. They tend to fail slowly.

While this task is doable at home, I do think the mechanicals at the garage does deserve at least 500$ for the labor here(excluding parts).
