  • Welcome to this AnimalWised video, where we are discussing the peaceful coexistence of two cats. It’s not always the easiest task and something which can cause a little trouble for cats and guardians alike. To understand how we can introduce two cats to each other, we need to think about feline behavior, preparing the home for a new cat and what to do if we see two cats fighting. We will show you everything you can do before you need a feline specialist in feline behavior such as an ethologist.
On AnimalWised you'll discover a high quality channel that's exclusively devoted to the Animal Kingdom. You'll find all sorts of content: from training, diet or beauty and everything that can be useful for you as a pet owner or animal lover. Want to become AnimalWised? Take a look and have fun with us!

Patience is the key and not to rush it.. My male cat was horrified when we brought in another male.. Of course we kept them separated initially but the few times they did see each other they would scream and yell.. And on the odd occasion had a couple of punch ups.. It took about 4 months of feeding them in separate spaces but also able to see each other.. And later having them both on leash during little introductions.. Its also best not to leave them Alone together even after they seem reasonably friendly.. Now they absolutely adore each other and quite frankly even ignore us😀

@@elsablue3646 I have the same problem my kitten is 7 months old and is attacking my cat who is disabled due to being attacked when she lived as a wild cat (Feral) so she had no human interactions until she was injured and rescued by the RSPCA, I got the kitten to help the wild cat see she was safe with humans by watching me patting the kitten and playing with it. Now that worked the wild cat trusts me and allows me to stoke her. Now some months past the kitten is now attacking my wild cat who is now scared of the kitten. I just don't know how to solve this and I am having to separate them. The cat took to the kitten straight away and loved her as if it were her own baby, and love was all she wanted to give the kitten. The kitten was from a litter of 5 and this was where the issues began as they were not fed sufficiently as she has a thing for food and steals the food from the cat.

I loved the video; In my experience (2 adult cats- tolerant to each other for more than 8 years, and introducing foster kittens with them) I would keep a kitten in one room for 2 to 3 days. First day, two adults would hear the kitten, and smell it under the door. Second day (because adults start to express high level of curiosity) I would allow them to see each other, just a glimpse (still separated by a "door frame"). Usually adults would be chilling, laying down in front of the door, relaxed and waiting to meet/sniff the kitten.
Third day, I would keep the door open for a while. Just so that adults can look whats going on inside the room, in a relaxed state of mind - because I would be playing with the kitten, so it wouldn't even noticed that two pairs of big eyes are analising it's every move. Point: grown ups need to realise that there is a non threthening intruder, who is playful and not paying attention to them. Kitten after 3 days realises that is being in a safe environment...

The best way to integrate two cats is by getting them when they are kittens. The adult cats do not accept "intruders" easily.Even then, get a pet gate and separate the two.Feed them in front of each other, let them get familiar with each other's scent.Play with them to ease up the tension.Reward them with treats when they behave nicely.

Me and my mum are getting another kitten so he can be a big brother. Hopefully it works out. He's such a playful sweet kitten, he deserves someone to play with

This is useful info. We brought a kitten into our house with an adult cat a couple of weeks ago. It is a process. The kitten is incredibly active, which irritates the adult cat at times, but they’re learning to play and chase each other. They’ll only hiss if they want to be left alone, get surprised, and occasionally when trying to get nose to nose. Still working out resources since the kitten wants everything it sees although she has her own and getting them to calm down when they’re in the same room. Again - it is a process. Cats are territorial predators. Give each cat their own space and let them act like cats (as long as they aren’t trying to kill each other, let them figure each other out).

    I adopted two stray kittens
    (Ginger)
    Age- 6-7 weeks
    Breed: Tabby
    Bought: 1 week before Cookie
    (Cookie)
    Age: 2-3 weeks
    Breed: Tabby Patch
Bought: 3 days after Ginger was bought
So it started from the first day, i thought they were fighting, so i always separated them. But for 4 days it started to go on and on the 4th day i literally gave up. But that same night i saw Cookie going to Ginger, so i thought "ofc they are fighting", but no i didnt hewr a sound from them, so i decided to go and check, so i peaked from the corner to check, and to my surprise they weren't fighting, and Cookie was eating her food and Ginger was just sitting and roaming, but after i went near them Ginger jumped onto Cookie to fight,
So i got out of there, and after 15 mins i checked again and they were silently sitting next to each other, so i thought "hmm... I think they are pretending to be enemies but they actually love each other". And i think they have improved their bond.
And it also reminded me of Tom And Jerry's line
It said "Tom never hated Jerry, He loved him, but he had to pretend to be enemies so that his owner shouldn't kick him out and bring a deadly cat which will kill Jerry"
    Thanks For Reading My Comment

We have 2 cats. But, 1 of them is an outdoors cat and the other 1 is an indoor cat. They fight through the patio door and hiss at each other, try to claw each other, and meow LIKE CRAZY. If you try to pick 1 of them up to take her to a room or something, she will start attacking you instead. We found that using a BROOM to push them away WORKS REALLY REALLY GOOD.

I have a situation where I brought a year old male cat after my other male cat passed and now he’s being aggressive to my older female cat. Chasing her and causing her to hide. I genuinely cannot tell if he’s being aggressive or if he’s still young and is just too energetic for my older girl. I have decided to separate them and slowly reintroduce them after I wear out the younger one a lot. I just feel bad for my other cat always hiding

I used to have two cats but sadly in September we discovered my one cat, Kitty had a tumour so we had to get her put down. Ever since then my other cat, Clover has been very hyper and needy, especially at night. So I plan on getting him a friend! He’s really friendly and has been around other cats ever since we’ve had him so I don’t think he’ll ever hiss or scratch at the new cat, but I really want to make sure they become best buds! Thanks for the video, these tips will be very helpful for when the time comes 😄

Both of my two cats were originally strays, that we took in. Both of them are socialize, but not chipped, so we think maybe someone abandoned them. We've had them for about two years but they never really too close to each other. If Harriet gets too close to Ozzie, he'll hiss at her and maybe even swat at her. I think Harriet wants to be friends but Ozzie is still on edge. We have a big open house so this isn't a problem but I just wish I can come downstairs and see them grooming each other or something. I know both of them have their traumas but I'm still hoping that one day I'll see some love.

Six years I’ve been in your situation the two cats tolerate each other though there is no love as we humans call it. They don’t groom each other, that’s down to my 14 year old he’s never liked being picked up or petted more that his head ears chin. We have trouble getting him into the carrier to go to vets. Once a year, the six year old cat is very placid though because my other cat doesn’t like to be picked up she has copied his wa6s I can pick her up and carry her from a to b, then off she goes, not lap sitting since she was 13 weeks old and she wanted to go downstairs and see they other cat not just through the door she decided she’s going 8n the room the slowly walked to each other bopped noses and all was well, till kitten started to look around the living room the older cat just hissed at her every time she walked near him. They live this way, never drawn blood though have a bundle every day after dinner just chasing and wrestling, the two of them will sleep on my bed though miles apart. Some times if big one is on the bed first little one won’t come on to it. They have their own way of living with each other that’s strange to me not to them, both were given me or they would of been put in shelter, one full black was given as a 12 week old kitten out of 9 litter she didn’t get fostered so I kept her she’s got such a sweet protective nature, both are scardy cats when the door knocks they run to outside or go hide, both are beautiful cats just the eldest has special needs after he had a terrible accident with a road sweeping machine. When he was seven months, they were going to put him down so I took him and fourteen and a half years later I’m so glad I did. Give all cats a chance they will live together if not next to each other.😻😸😻😽🐈‍⬛

Its been 5 months, things have kind of improved but they still don't get along. It's really hard to live like this where we always have to worry about the cats facing each other and starting a fight. They almost never lie down at the same spot, they don't even walk by each other very often. However, now, the newest cat only gets along with one of the three cats. she isn’t aggressive at all, she is nothing but nice to the other cats, but our oldest cat suddenly hates the newest cat and hides in the master bedroom all day, and the youngest cat (not the newest) gets along with the newest cat better than the oldest one does, but still occasionally hisses and growls at her. they were getting along quite well and now they just aren’t anymore and i don’t know what changed.

Suddenly a few months ago, my male cat started attacking my female cat. He hates her so much , attacks her whenever she gets into his sight. My female cat has a habit of hanging outside for a while. @@karthikvelan6108 Hi Karthik, you should rather take the girl to a vet, may well be that she is the sick one. Often dominant cats do tend to attack sick cats to push them away from their group, to keep the rest of the group (family) healthy. I'd do a blood test on both of them. Another reason could be that your female cat has male friends on the outside and comes back in with their smell. If your male cat doesn't like that smell that could be a reason for attack. I would get a blood test for both and try syntetic feromones.

Jessica That was a bad idea to just bring 2 more cats in the house like that. Imagine if 2 humans just turned up in your home. You'd hate it. I don't know why people don't understand other animals think like we do.
If they can't get along, make sure they go to loving homes. They all deserve a happy life. And if they're siblings or friends, and knew each other before you adopted them, make sure they stay together. Splitting families up is disgusting. Don't give them to a shelter, they will end up being split up, and not having a good time. They deserve lives full of joy and happiness and contentment, not spending so much time in misery and fear.
Other animals shouldn't be bought and sold. You can't own another living thing. They're not consumer goods. They're not property. They're not toys for your amusement, or tools for you to use as you please. We're not their owners, we're their carers.
Pet isn't an insult. That's horrible. A pet is an animal of another species, in your family, that you care for. Species is irrelevant to family.
Humans are animals, and no more special than any other creature.

Do they attack each other more when they don't have enough food / water / clean litter? might have to get another litterbox, maybe make sure there aren't areas in your house like hallways where one can feel trapped (add shelves on walls so there is always escape routes, more than one route). Cats mostly only fight when they can't run away.
If 1 cat attacks the other one all the time, you have to raise the confidence level of the cat that acts like a pray, try to make him more cozy spots in the house that are elevated where he can run too instead of hidding in corners, etc. My cat from hell is a great show to help understand this all and the importance of catification
And for steph and everyone else, make sure you HAVE PLAY TIME with the cats, particularly with the one that is causing problems. you have to find a way to tire the kitten so he doesnt bully the older / disabled cat

We have a cat sanctuary with 35’ish. We have a room for a few that are very afraid of everything. The most aggressive one is sent to our one other location. This has worked for years. But we just got a wonderful 2 yr old boy, keeping him in our “domestication room” for a week, then got him neutered. After recovering from surgery, we started introducing him to the rest. He slowly walked the whole five room sanctuary, then stopped to play with a catnip toy. After a few minutes, he attacked a 5 month old kitten that was watching him closely. Not just a swipe, but a full on hair flying rolling fight which lasted maybe two seconds. The kitten got away before I reached them. I immediately tried calming the new cat, then let him alone and he walked 20 foot away and attacked an eight month old kitten in the same way, and that kitten got away within two seconds also. I calmed the new cat and was able to carry him back into the domestication room where he’s been for the last two days, while I try to figure out the best path for this boy. HELP PLEASE

Well my cats are normally nice to each other but when I give them catnip they kinda fight over the catnip so I don’t think that would work

I introduced a kitten in my house, the OG is also a kitten but slightly older. Here is my situation:
    New kitten: Hey lets pla..
OG: Hisses and pushes it away.
A little frustrating since the newbie doesn't have someone to play with...

One time we had to go on a trip so we left them in a cage together and had people feed them and they were cuddling together when we got back

if there are any cat specialists in the comments, i’d appreciate your advice:
we just adopted another kitty yesterday, and thought it would be a good idea to introduce the cats in our new home as it would be a neutral area for them as neither of them had been there yet. the new one is a 3 year old, the “resident” is an 8 year old, both are female. both are having hissy fits (more so the 8 year old) but there hasn’t been any intimidation or scratching/swiping, so i think that’s a good sign? the 3 year old has explored the house a lot whereas the 8 year old has been scared to go anywhere after being moved from our old house that she was used to.
is there any way to help bond them or reduce standoffish behaviours between them?

For the older cat if this is their first move that could be overwhelming. When introducing a cat to a new home it's best to start with a bathroom/closet for 1 hr up to 7 days depending on kitty comfort and interest in what is outside the door. You can move on to a bedroom for an hour to a day or three then allow access to whole house. You can mix in time where the two new cats get to swap rooms so they can smell each other without the other nearby and then allow them to smell under a door.

@@MeowMix517 That's to bad. In almost 40 years of cat ownership we've never had a problem assimilating "new" cats to the residents. They just move in and make themselves at home. Before you know it, they're playing together.

Brought in a feral kitten out of a litter of stray kittens livimg outside our home. We already have 2 cats, a tabby and siamese. The siamese became friends very quickly.. the tabby is still thinking about it

Brought home a kitten I found on the side of the road to find him a good home. My two cats not only did not like him but were angry with me and refused any attention even hissing at times until the kitten left. Was the only time they had ever hissed at me, they were pissed.

We adopted a now 1 year old female tuxedo a little over a month ago. We have a 3 year female ginger already. We introduced them slowly with each cat separated for at least 2 weeks. Our resident ginger isn’t exactly fond of our new girl and hisses and growls when they’re a little too close for comfort. Our little one is full of energy and while we spend a lot of time throughout the day exhausting her with play time, she tends to chase our resident cat. Despite the chasing she isn’t aggressive towards our resident cat but our resident cat nonetheless will hiss, growl and has swatted a couple of times all before trying to find higher ground. We have separated the two on each occasion but each time we try again, it escalates to the same scenario. We’re not sure if progress is really being made. Any guidance on trying to get our cats to speak the same language would be greatly appreciated.
