We adopted a 3-yr old male just yesterday and brought him home to our 2-year old brother/sister bonded pair. Of course, we had no clue how to facilitate the introductions but we were so lucky that our new boy is just so mellow and well-mannered. He immediately knew that he was the new cat in town and he set course to be respectful and non-threatening. Just over 36 hours later, our 3 babies are living in peace. Sometimes, you get lucky but also just use common sense to have a successful introduction: expect hissing and growling; have a place where the new arrival can be safe, give your current babies lots of love, watch everyone carefully (adopting during the holiday weekend worked to our advantage), definitely have separate feeding and litter box areas. And calm down the energy in the house; if the humans are keyed up, the cats will be, too.

I put a small towel, that smelled like my kitten, down where our other two ate. I put their plates on top of the towel so they would associate the kitten smell with good things. My kitten was ready after 3 days and they all get along great! Im watching again as we are adopting my kittens younger brother. Exactly one year younger! Im allergic to cats so I treated myself to a Siberian. I live high in the Rockies so it's a good choice for the nasty weather we can get. I made him a great cat.

Thank you for sharing this post! The methods mentioned do take time and patience, but worked for us. I don't think you can rush the process and expect positive results. Backing up the steps may also be necessary and is ok. We took on my sister in law's deaf, 12 year old cat. We introduced him to our 6 year old male (who 6 months before lost his best cat buddy) very slowly. We followed the steps as described and supervised. It took some time, but both cats eventually accepted the situation, one another and learned to coexist, even sleeping together. There were points along the way when I did not think we were going to be successful, but our vet said "time is simply your friend" and we found this to be true. Please don't give up trying. We all need a place we can call home. Best cat wishes!

I foster cats and always stress a slow introduction whenever one of my fosters goes to a family with a resident cat. A lot of time things don't go as planned - the new cat snuck out of quarantine and the two cats saw each other. I suggested walking back to the previous step and a lot of people just decided to forego the rest of the process and wing it. They ended up making the integration a lot more difficult than it has to be.

Mine had gotten along for years, then the younger one went crazy. My guess is it was the older ones are food obsessed and he’s a nibbler so they ate his food. Feeding them separately helped but he still went crazy and when he flips he gets on a shelf or under the bed and lung fu noises all of us if we go in the room. The cat he fights with will mostly ignore him but if he starts something that can’t isn’t having it so I get a ball of screaming merged tabby that I can’t separate. As a result, I’m down to time sharing the house. One cat is a lover, not a fighter, so he is the one allowed out all the time. I don’t know what else to do. Funny thing is if I feed them close to the door, the food obsessed cat will grab the other cats food from under the door and either pull it under or flip it over. So here we are in timeshare, feliway cat purgatory.

We recently adopted two kittens after losing our dog to cancer. We have a senior male 12 who is very sweet, affectionate and mellow. He has always been apart of a multi-pet household and since our dog passed showed signs of being lonely. Hence the two kittens. We are slowly introducing them and he took to our dog right away when we brought him home. First visual with one the kittens he was hissing a bit, so we are slowing down introduction again. thank you for the tips!

Very helpful. We're at day five and we did our intro a little different. Our 1st cat saw the new kitten on day one and has seen her every day since. We keep the kitten upstairs and she has her own room with food, toys and litter. We have a pet gate at the top of the stairs to keep them separated by still able to see each other and get used to each other. We'll give treats and play with both of them around the gate and we just introduced feeding them around the gate at their dinner and breakfast today. It went pretty good. The older one was a little on edge but she did eat about half her food, so we moved her dish back to her regular spot so she could finish. So far things seem to be progressing nicely. Hoping to be able to get the gate removed for good within a week. Fingers crossed🤞

I had 2 cats - brother and sister (Tobi and Patchi) we lost Tobi them in August last year.
Decided to rescue a younger cat, and we picked up Percy a week ago. Patchi is 4.5, and Percy 4 months.
We set up a base room for Percy, and I’ve been sleeping in there with him, thought it would be a good way to get his scent on me.
1 day my partner kept Patchi in the main bedroom, to allow Percy to move around the house, before returning him to his base area.
Next day, Patchi was out for her usual exploring and we allowed Percy to go into the bedroom and he had a wonder around.
They did bump into each other though when returning Percy back to ‘his’ room - & Patchi did hiss at him.
I’m worried I’ve unintentionally messed things up & won’t be able to salvage things

Our resident cat Noodle is not comfy going into our new cat Beep’s sanctuary. So instead of pushing her into stress, we found starting with smell intro via food first has helped. After a few days of this we tried a scent swap again and Noodle made it fully into Beep’s space for the first time! 🥳 MANY HISSING but still progress.
Also Beep has lived with cats before and genuinely doesn’t seem bothered by Noodle. They haven’t had a visual intro yet so we’ll see if that lasts. 😂

Hi Mallory, thank you for all the videos and information you share with us! I recently brought home an eight-month-old kitten. We created a base camp for her, and she settled in pretty quickly, with-in a day or two, she was playing and exploring all parts of the space. I have a three-year-old resident cat we adopted a year ago, and since our kitten's arrival, she has been very curious. We swapped rooms with both cats to get each other's scent. I was trying to follow the steps. However, I went a bit too quick and allowed them to be in the same space together, and my resident cat became defensive and hissed at the kitten. Is it ok to go back to the scent swapping and continue working the steps because just the sight and hissing was a terrible experience for us.

we have 6 cats. One of the cats we adopted after we moved to Texas 3 years ago. One of the cats, Pearl decided she hated Luke and now they hate each other. I think I need to reintroduce and hope for it to be better. We also recently had a foster fail. 2 bengals. They now live with us and the little girl gives Pearl grief all the time. I'm hoping if I follow your directions of reintroduction, it will be better. I've had cats all my life and have never had so many dominating, territorial cats at once. It's been a bit tough. Right now 2 of our older girls stay in our master bedroom and walk in closet. We have to keep the door locked because Clue, our female bengal has learned to open all the doors. It's a bit exhausting but we love them all so much. Thanks so much for your tips.

I just adopted 2 male kittens (Siamese) and I have a 4 year old adult female Siamese. I did the scent swap with tea towels and it seemed to work really well. they are not best buds yet, but they have been sharing the house for a few days with no real issues. I also got collars for all of them with little bells. That seems to have been a good move. They can hear each other coming and are not shocked if they come upon each other.

So i have a Bengal female thats 10mounth she got castrated and is healing well 13 days done so 1 more to go to be fully healed.
New cat is a ragdoll Kitty, also female. The seller insisted that i should not have closed doors and should just have like bars. So i followed her advice even tho i preferred to take it slow. Bengal got curious and approached the gate meowing, the ragdoll was actually hiding but got curious and csme straight to the gate and they locked eyes. Bengal got crazy while the ragdoll was really mellow and showed zero aggression.
I have the ragdoll in my room and let the bengal roam freely in the remaining parts of the house. Ragdoll got rly comfy fast and sat in my lap and purred and bonded really fast on arriving day. So i slowly opened the door and have a gate, just to cehck what the bengal is doing. She was laying down on the couch, much calmer, no hissing or growling. Ragdoll approach gate and layed down and purred, they had eye contact. But i did notice that the bengal was shaking at times. Sry for my bad english and text wall, just not sure where to go from here, just start from scratch?

They did wrestled just after their first meeting. They became friends to each other. We also adopted another stray cat in the early 90’s. Both cats got used to our 3rd cat during the summer. He was adopted in mid November 1993. All 3 got along no problem. We had 3 cats till March 1994. Back to 2. With my sister that we gotten 2 kittens from 2 different pet shops. One was a tuxedo Manx kitten and the other one was a cute red tabby kitten. Kittens do get along when they grow up close to each other. Both of the kittens did slept next each other or on top. My parents old red tabby cat was so laid back on my sister’s and my red tabby kitten. The old cat let the young kitten to sleep next to him. My sister’s has 2 cats that really got along really quickly about 5 days. They both became besties over 3 years now. Even my sister also have a cute small dog with those 2 cats.

This sounds so simple in theory, but my car went into his sanctuary room (my new bedroom) and within a couple hours was trying to escape to go check out the house. And in all the trying to escape, which he has done several times now by jumping over a 5ft board and pushing the door open, he has gotten eye contact with the resident cat.
He gets super stressed out being stuck in a room or even part of the house all day. I even tried the site swapping and both cats were more stressed.

    So my situation is this:
I have a 5 year old female Mozie and I just got a new kitten he's about 11-12 weeks now and I've had him for about 2 weeks. I have done all the steps, seperate room, feeding on either side. (the feeding part isn't consistent as my cat isn't a big eater so I put her dry food there right by the door and she grazes when she's hungry (not sure if that's good enough maybe every other day she eats when he eats behind the door). So now it's been almost 2 weeks she has shown "interest" and sits by the door and paws under the door. My kitten is Mr. confidence so I don't see any issues with him, it's her she's super skiddish in general so I guess that doesn't help. Although we did have our boy Smokey and got her as a friend.. there introduction was ok and she really warmed up to him (he unfortunately passed away and she became depressed) so I feel a little discouraged now. but I'm at the point now where we put a screen door up. And she peaks around the corner at him and is very weary of him and does this pounce and scream/meow at the screen. This is the first full day of screen so hoping all goes well.. Any tips to help a scardy cat bond with a confident kitty? She does do better with cats so I know that's not the issue.. Maybe because she's more frightened she will just need more screen time to warm up? Ugh I feel so sad and want them to be besties

thanks for this great video :) I have some questions and hope someone could help. I got a new cat (3y, female) from a freind who can't longer take care of her and my old cat (15y, male) can be a little mean sometimes and i was afraid he would tear her apart lol. But suprisingly, he ignored her at the beginning and reacted amazing to her scent (rubbed against her furr and purred) and after a few days they seemed to be ready to see each other. That went pretty well too, they were pretty calm in the room together, fell asleep and they ate in the same room immediately. But i still followed those steps and didnt let them be alone unsupervised. Everytime they got too close, they would hiss, but both then just turned around and left, no agression. But yesterday my older cat suddenly wanted to slap her out of nowhere and she hissed and growled SO LOUD and he still wanted to slap her, but she hid behind a couch, which my older, fat cat cant fit in. Then my older cat left und i seperated them them for the rest of the day and today. So the thing is, why were they fine with each other at the beginning and now suddelny not anymore? I'm sure i rushed it way too much, its only been 2 weeks, but they really seemed to be ready for all those steps. How do i know if they actually are ready? And also i really can not distract them, if they are in a room, they will just focus on each other, not even treats can distract them and playing with them also doesnt work.

    • @AllAboutCatsYT
      @AllAboutCatsYT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmmm...I think they're just feeling that territorial pressure now that they're in the same room. Do you think you can separate them in the same room so they can see one another from closer-up but not make physical contact?

@@AllAboutCatsYT thanks for the answer :) I could only put one of them in a carrier. But i heard that thats not a good solituon. And if i open the door just a tiny bit, the new cat hides at the end of the room, while the old cat tries to force his head through the door. They seem fine, as long as one cat is a little higher up than the other. But as soon as they are on the floor, my old one wants to get colser, and the new one runs away.
