      I have 2 existing cats and a new kitten. One cat was fine after a day, but the other is still throwing tantrums and she will not eat even with the kitten on the other side of the door. If she smells the kitten, she's growling and hissing. But, I hope with time it gets better! I want a companion for my kitten so I can start my new job.

      @@sbkmarkel one of my cats will play with her and kinda moms her. The other is still not happy, but will deal with it. We try to keep them separated as much as we can, but due to work sometimes they have to be in the same room for a couple of hours. No fights though thankfully. We make sure we give our grumpy cat lots of love and attention and positive association and she's always happy at the end of the day.

    • @4plywhenicry
      @4plywhenicry 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I thought I'd do another update:
      Both cats are comfortable around her! The grumpy one from before is only grumpy when she gets tackled, but neither of them will hurt her. We leave the 3 of them alone while we are at work and we have a camera up to watch them and the two play together all the time while the grumpy one just chills, but she's visibly relaxed. Just don't wanna play. My kitten is about 15-16 weeks old now with all her shots now and is going to get spayed once it's time and hopefully once she gets spayed she will be a tiny bit more calm so the grumpy cat doesn't have to worry about random pouncings on her while she's sleeping 😂

      It's so nice to hear everything worked out so well! I've taken in stray cats for 20 years. Right now I have 4 cats. 3 males, ages 2, 7 and 10 and a very recent addition, a female kitten I named Violet.
      I heard Violet crying under a bush. She was scared, hungry and cold. The vet gave me instructions for Violet's care, but she advised me that Violet may not survive.
      However... my little girl made it! I would've been thrilled just to see her survive, but Violet took it up like 10 notches beyond basic survival. That little mama has THRIVED!
      Violet weighed just 0.3 pounds
      was so weak she couldn't lift her head, let alone stand up. 4 months later and Violet is a happy, healthy, energetic, fearless kitty. She's intensely curious and has come so far physically! In under 4 months, my girl went from too weak to lift her head to a 3am zoomie machine! Lol, the best part is that I never had to implement any of my plans to get my 3 adult boys to accept, nor my plans for helping Violet to not be scared of her big brother cats. Violet, and this is absolutely not an exaggeration, literally RUNS THE SHOW among her siblings. I don't know how she does this, but when it's time to eat Violet has gotten the 3 older male cats to wait until she decides which plate of food is going to be hers! They actually sit back and wait for her to select her plate and begin eating before any of those three guys even APPROACH their food! Then if Violet finishes her meal and feels like doing this, she will go over to one of my male cats and nudge them and no freaking joke, the male cat will walk away and Violet will eat some of his food! She also runs the playtime dynamic among the 4 cats. If one of her brothers approaches her to play, she usually plays with him. But if another cat tries to initiate playtime and she's not in the mood she let's him know immediately that he better back the eff up and leave her alone! Then the times when Violet will initiate play, the male almost always obliges. I can't tell if it's a welcome suggestion to the male cat and he truly does want to play with her, or if he just goes along with it because somehow she has declared herself queen of this little feline family and - no clue how - my 3 male cats OBEY HER COMMANDS! So basically she decided she was the boss, told them she was the boss, and they, all 3 of them, were just like "Okay, Boss!" OMG it's so funny!

    Patience is the key and not to rush it.. My male cat was horrified when we brought in another male.. Of course we kept them separated initially but the few times they did see each other they would scream and yell.. And on the odd occasion had a couple of punch ups.. It took about 4 months of feeding them in separate spaces but also able to see each other.. And later having them both on leash during little introductions.. Its also best not to leave them Alone together even after they seem reasonably friendly.. Now they absolutely adore each other and quite frankly even ignore us😀

Introducing cats is usually NEVER easy, but it doesn't have to be a train wreck either. Too many people give up quickly when all the cats need is a little more time to acclimate to each other. Hi Katie! It's common for bigger cats to play rough with new kittens. I would allow them to play while you are watching. If the kitten keeps trying to get away, or cries out/hisses and seems genuinely scared I would separate them. Like kids sometimes playtime can get out of hand and everyone will need a "time out". When the kitten gets bigger things should be on a more even playing field!

      Hi Katie, did it work out? When it happens I separate them but it happens again and again when I try to socialize them. Heelp😿

    Thanks for your tips. We’ve successfully introduced two cats previously - a sweet and docile senior boy and a curious but shy girl kitten. It was so easy and quick. While never becoming best friends, they enjoyed each other’s presence and would sit near each other on the couch or explore happenings in the home together. We lost our 20 year old boy this past Thanksgiving.
    We are now working towards introducing our new 10 month old boy to our existing (now 6 year old) girl cat. She’s grown even more anxious, timid and shy as she ages but we can tell she’s lonely being the sole cat of house currently. Our new boy is very sweet and playful so we’re hopeful that some of that energy wears off on her. We’re going to start the introduction process in the next week or so and videos like these are incredibly helpful in knowing what are good signs vs bad (especially in regards to the hissing - our girl loves to make her feelings known by hissing when she’s upset). Thanks again and please send us any good luck you’ve got!

    Right now we have 5 happy cats in the house. It's more than we planned on, but things happen. :-) Perhaps we have incredible luck or have always, somehow, had mellow cats find their way to us. In 40 years of cat ownership we've never had a problem introducing a new cat to the residents, whether it be a kitten or an adult. We turn the new cat loose and let them get acquainted. Of course, all cat activity is supervised until we're sure the coast is clear. It's always been a matter of hours, not days. Last November we took in a stray that had been hanging around the house all summer. I was amazed at how quickly the cats acclimated; no hostility at all. For those of you not as fortunate, this video should be invaluable. As stated, never give up. Patience, scent, communal feeding, plenty of attention to the residents, and supervision are keys to success!

      My older cat does this to my one year old cat as we are introducing the new kitten. I just slow things down by keeping kitty in base camp, baby gate, and feeding all the gates on their side of the gate. Then I give my older cat treats and attention all the time in front of the door of kitty base camp. I'm at 5 wks, so don't feel bad, but what i'm doing is working. My older gett is growling and hissing lots less. And my 1 year old cat and kitty still get individual play sessions so their relationship can keep growing. Just don't worry if it takes a few mths. My older cat (8yrs) just really, really needs time! Good luck, I just noticed your comment was 5 mths, I hope it's going well!

      I have the same issue right now. Can you share me the updates of your cats now??

    • @Wolffeathers21
      @Wolffeathers21 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@musichi7 Yeah sure thing. I kept at it and just kept feeding them together. I restarted their distancing, so I fed them pretty far apart and got them closer together even slower than I did before. This seemed to work for a while but It became clear eventually that they were just destined to not get along. I noticed my dominant cat would generally put on a show by hissing and such, but he never growled or had any body language other than defensive-aggressiveness. My new cat is very, very tolerant and well mannered, so be never reacted to the aggression. I started letting my new cat out during the day and then putting them in his safe room at night. That way I could supervise their interactions and be aware if anything happened between them. After a while, I stopped putting him in my room at night because they didn't have any violent interactions. The two cats still don't really get along but they tolerate eachother a lot better. My dominant cat was poorly socialized since he was an orphaned kitten, so I don't think he'll ever be friendly with my newest cat. Nowadays, I try to minimize negative interactions. I paid attention to exactly when my dominant cat would hiss and I tried to remedy the areas. For instance, my dominant cat would hiss at my new cat while looking outside an open window, so I now keep two windows open so they don't have to compete. Overall, they can coexist just fine. They're not friends, but it's pretty peaceful.

    I have a 1 yr old neutered male cat. We just found a 6 week old (?) female in our garage. The garage has always been his domain, but the new kitty was apparently using his litter box and eating his food and had been around a while before we knew it. The first night we caught her I put in her in a carrier and left her in the garage for the night. My boy cried all night and hissed at her a few times. I took her to the vet and got her cleaned up and now she’s sleeping in the spare bathroom. My boy seems very curious, sniffing the door and waiting outside the door, even trying to nose his way in the moment it’s cracked. I’ve taken her out and placed her in her carrier and left her in the laundry room while I clean her bathroom and her litter box. My boy goes in and sniffs her blankets and even used her litter box. It’s been 2 days and he seems so curious about meeting her. Is it too soon? He has free range of the house but I have kept her in her bathroom so far. She doesn’t seem to be bothered by him- actually seems to want him around. Prob scared and lonely. He’s a sweet boy but idk if he’s really excited to meet her or ready to kick out the invader
    Sorry for the book 🤣

    This is so helpful. We are getting a new kitten in the next couple weeks as long as she is negative for FIV (Her momma has it so the kittens have to be tested). We have a black cat named Kimba we've had since kittenhood (She's 13 years old now) and I'm expecting a lot of the hissing and growling that you mentioned. I'm hoping this kitten can provide her with some companionship in her older years that she never necessarily received from other cats before. She had a brother (Himalayan) for only about six months until he developed urinary tract infections and was blocked several times. We were in college and had little to no money to help the little guy out so after 3500 dollars we had to put him down, so Kimba didn't have much of a chance to hang out with her brother. I'm hoping she will find comfort in another kitty sibling.

      Marie L YES! Thank God. It took a month, but my cat is “more cool” with them now, not perfect but he has admitted the truth and has calmed a lot. I kept them in a separate room for week 1 and my Cat never saw them but he knew they were in there. He hissed at the door and isolated himself and didn’t eat much - totally stressed out. On Week 2 I would bring the kittens out for a little bit so my cat could see them everyday (not a long time), he basically hated them. Around week 3 I would swap rooms for a little while, put big cat in kittens room, put kittens in outside area where cat dwells, and then let them be in same room periodically for more time; my cat started to ease up. Week 4 I just opened the rooms up for them both to travel around, and my cat has conformed more, only very few times my cat would hiss but the kittens don’t care about him they just play and explore the house. They sorta respect him and then disrespect him and so I think my cat has surrendered. Basically, take it slow, follow your gut. I’m thankful for the advice in the video, I didn’t do everything but I did take it slow and it was needed for my Cat to admit the truth of the new development and share his territory. Onwards.

Our older cat has sprayed every surface in the house, he's bitten us and he's absolutely hated his new sister, attacking her whenever he could. We've been told he's a despot male and that we should never have got him a sister. They've been stressed, we've been stressed. But over the past three weeks she's been finally starting to win him over. Not friends yet, and she's still very scared, but there's definite progress at last.

    Hi! This video was very helpful. Our 12 year old female cat has always been moody and miserable and trusts no one but my husband and I. She has always snuggled with us and slept with us every night. Unfortunately she only "tolerates" our 10 & 7 year old children. They have never gotten to hold her and can barely get a pet in before she tries to bite and hit them. So we made the decision to adopt a new female kitten to allow the children to experience a kind cat and enjoy their pet! We've been very careful with introducing the kitten to our older cat. The kitten is only 12 weeks old and very sweet and easy going. The older cat has spent the last 2 weeks growling and hissing at the kitten when they are together (supervised) for an hour or two a day. We keep the kitten in our master bedroom during the day and in the master bathroom overnight. She sleeps quietly in her bed all night- she is an angel! We had hoped the older cat would continue to sleep with us, but when she jumps in our bed she smells the kitten and hisses and runs out of the room. She is very angry with us and letting us know all the time. She is only nice when she wants her meals in the morning and evening. She is very smart, very manipulative and very CRANKY. We love her so much despite her attitude, and just want to help her realize this kitten will be a great companion for her and she will be able to remain the dominant cat of the house so there is nothing to fear. I think she's scared and annoyed. I've tried giving her the towel that we rubbed all over the kitten. I have purchased the plug in "FeelAway" stuff that is supposed to release pheromones to relax her. And I have even tried calming cat treats. She's 22lbs and quite a beast, can be aggressive. Nothing is working. It's only been 2 weeks... so I know its still early and won't give up trying to help with the adjustment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! jackie.orlando@hotmail.com

I think you shouldn't have made the kitten stay in your bedroom, preferably the kitten should have been shut in one of your children's bedrooms since you got the kitten for them anyway. your bedroom is t he older cat's primary territory, unlike your children's bedrooms. hopefully they're starting to get along by now. if they aren't, you should wash all your bedding and furniture in your room, try to get dominant kitty to feel safe in your bedroom again, then let the kitten stay in your children's room(s) during the day and night. then start the process from step 1 once older kitty is comfortable in your room again.

    Thank you so much for this! We’ve had my kitten for 3 days now. And I had him in our master bedroom. But i didn’t think about our cat being shut out. So now at night I put him in our bathroom and I let our other cat roam. My question is when do you officially know they’re good to be left alone without supervision?

      You will just know. When they dont fight extra brutal anymore, when you can wash dishes without worrying about them. If you can sleep with no wild fighting, then its probably ok. Start small. Personally it took 3 weeks for my cats. From really bad to friends.

    So we have a 7 month old kitten and recently got a 5 month old kitten and he doesn’t hiss at him but he smacks he all the time. I’m a bit worried because he is way bigger and my 5 month old fights back a little bit cries and some times doesn’t defend himself
    We have had the 5 month old for a few days. Sometimes my older cat is sweet and licks him but other times he hitting at bitting. Is there anything we can do different to help them adjust?? Well the older one mainly.

      @@Rosala4Roxx you should get your male neutered as soon as possible! kittens can become pregnant at 4 months old and he'll be less aggressive/territorial once he is neutered. It also prevents health issues later on :) That should also help with the neck biting

    • @vixxcelacea2778
      @vixxcelacea2778 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You should reintroduce them. It's not good or normal for cats to actually fight. Having a small swatting match or some hissing to re-establish social heiarchy might be normal in cats that aren't super close, but fighting is not cool. It's stressful and could escalate to cats actually hurting each other.
      If reintroducing doesn't work, you should probably rehome one of the kitties unless you are willing to split your house and keep them away from each other for 15-20 years.

      While cats are solitary animals by nature, ours have always seemed to enjoy companionship, as stated in the video. Multiple cats should never be a social problem. It's just a lot of work and expense taking care of them! :-)

      @@1940limited Hi G, yeah, for years I never had a problem with multiple cats. Then I sort of had a problem when I brought in Betty, the Super Alpha from my Feral Cat Feeding Station. Betty was sort of special, with a foot in both Worlds. I first saw her as a kitten eating out of a dish in front of a door. So, she was a little bit Hand Socialized at the right age for it. but when her People moved and left her behind, she came charging into the Feeding Station and took over. She looked like she had Brit Short Hair Blood and those things are built like bull terriers. But some kids got BB guns for Christmas and turned the Territory into Fields of Death. So I brought Betty inside. I loved her, but she did corner out all the other cat's Them To Me Quality times. After just a few years, Betty was still young, she dropped over dead.... I guess it was a BB or a Pellet she had been shot with that finally cut into something important. Then, wow, to see how the other cats re-positioned. Yeah, whenever somebody dies in a Multicat Household, it is like Musical Chairs. You know, it might break your heart when some favorite Snuggle Bug dies, but then, you'll be surprised when another cat just steps into that role. "My Turn". But every once in a while there can be Real Problems and drama. Like Caroline says, we're always able to ride it out.

    Watching videos because my husband and I just got a new rescue kitten (7 month old male). Our first kitten we got when he was super young. He lived a very safe and sheltered life and had always been super loving. He’s 6 months old now. We wanted to get one more cat around the same age so that they can have each other always. Our new cat is in rough condition and was not taken care of properly by whoever had him before us. He’s currently scared and shy but still always us to touch him/hold him/bathe him. Our first cat, Salem, is NOT liking our new cat, Aspen. It’s been very stressful because Aspen doesn’t hiss at Salem but Salem gets REAL angry just simply smelling his scent on a t-shirt, let alone seeing him.

    • @KittenSchool
      @KittenSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Kelci, I think some occasional hissing is ok. There will probably have to be some hissing and even a swat or too before the cats really get to know each other. Unless there is serious fighting go on, or one cat is attacking the other (beyond a swat or hiss), I would let them interact more when you are there to supervise. If you keep them separated for too long then they won't get the chance to meet, work out their social hierarchy order, and learn to live together. It isn't easy at first but I think it can work out if you're patient and allow the cats to adjust on their own terms. Good luck!
