Great advice Rudy! I always use the best scrim. A lot of people think I charge too much for my upholstery work. But it takes lots of physical labor. Plus the cost of living has gone up too. Thank you again!!!Eddie
Hello Clint, through the years, I have even had a couple times a customer ask me if I price match. I told them that I am not like a product you take from a shelf at Walmart. Please keep liking and watching!
Those customers are the best ones you could never have. If they think that quality materials and experience are too expensive they're more than welcome to go to your competition. Then once they find out that going cheap wasn't worth it because the product sucks, they come back to you wondering things like "can you fix this" or "can you believe they charged x and this is what I got?". Experience costs money.
@@JJZBULLITT109 Hello JJz, Then you can charge more because somebody messed it up for you to fix, more labor. But I don't like seeing someones mess up. I would probably turn them away for not going with me in the first place. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Duck, I do hear that sometimes and take that into account at I explain my videos. Thanks for hanging in there with me! please keep liking and watching!
I love your technique series. Numbering them is a great way to keep track of them😂 I love the information you share! I'm, for the most part, self-taught in upholstery.
Hello Dennis, Thank you so much for saying so. What is more important about the Technique numbers is, the lower the number the more important it is. Cheers to us self taught toughies right? We nee to stick together. Please keep liking and watching!
I was recently in an Audi Q5 sport model, the seats were so firm that I found it an unpleasant ride. His wife has the more luxurious model and it was way better. That’s why test drives matter. When I had my dining room chairs reupholstered the shop owner gave me padding to sit on and decide thickness and density, he like you was very knowledgeable and wanted the customer to be happy.
The smile at the end was CLASSIC 👍🏼 it’s like the smile I get watching the weather in Alabama, when they say the humidity is going up and it is already above 70% 😝
Thank you for the foam video. I've have bucket seats I'm working on now from a 66 Rambler where the foam has turned to dust. The seats have coil springs with a layer of foam on top of the springs and foam in the cover for the pleats. All the foam is just dust so it's hard to tell what kind and thickness of foam was there. There's several layers of cotton linen that I guessed was used like scrim. Boy, I tell you what it's the most complicated car upholstery I've experienced with nylon webbing, listing wires and bungie cords. Thank you for the video and sharing your experience. I appreciate you my friend!
Hello Greg, you are so welcome! That is what I call going to crackers. Yep they used to get real creative with those old cars. Please keep liking and watching!
Thank you for sharing all this information! I re did the headliner in my 2001 Dodge ram van with the help of your video. I didn't do it perfectly, and I may re do it over Christmas Break. It was easy compared to a car because it was only over the drivers passenger area. It is a cargo van so I might go find the headliner board from a junk van and cover that so I can finish the celing of the cargo area. I am thinking about picking up a Singer HD 6380 and redoing my seats and sun visors. I am on the fence about, don't know if I will use the machine for anything else ever again, lol. That foam for the seats is expensive! I have priced some at our local upholstery supplier as well as JoAnn's. For the price of getting a machine and doing it myself compared to having someone else do it seems about the same.
Hello B3, I am so glad to hear good news about your headliner. Yes, foam has gotten very expensive. The idea is to put the sewing machine to work and increase your income. Hehe Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Black, Any upholstery supplier near you should have something similar. I get mine from Keyston Bros. They have several locations in the USA and they ship. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Tom, You are so welcome! It is usually obvious when it's time to replace foam. A lot of the time if there is nothing wrong with it, there should be no need to replace it. Please keep liking and watching!
I want to make extra thick and soft seats. Can I sandwich multiple layers of foam together? For example I can find up to half inch thick scrim but I want it to be thicker, 1" atleast. Is it okay if I take 1/2" scrim and use adhesive to add another 1/2" regular foam to it?
Hello Core, Yes you can glue multiple layers of foam together. Scrim is really for sewing, but you can also do that. Just give it a try! Please keep liking and watching!
Thanks for the video as always. I do think, though, that you are technically confusing foam "density" with "firmness." What you are really referencing is firmness, one can have a "firm" foam which is still low density, and vice versa. Two separate things. Curious where you get your varying qualities of scrim; I typically buy from Keyston and only see the pink stuff. Thanks again.
Hello 02, I guess i have been doing it wrong for 43 years. Thanks for setting me strait! I order "Density" foams from Keyston Bros. This is my thinking, found on the net." "Density has a significant influence on how the foam feels and performs. Foams with a high density will generally feel more firm, and can withstand more pressure. Conversely, low-density foams will feel softer, but cannot withstand excessive pressure or weight." Thanks for liking and watching!
I have a seat in my 06 Dodge Dakota that is or looks a lot like the one you fixed in a video I watched earlier today, the bolster is shot and there is a tear in the material what is the best way to go about fixing it ?
Hello Dana, I do have several videos in my channel that show different types of seat repairs. Tears can be resewn or seat panels can be replaced. Or new upholstery all together. Please keep liking and watching!
Subscribed and love your videos , very informative ! Quick question I have a spare king size 3 inch memory foam I guess high density based off your video and about to do my first upholstery on my old school and confident after watching u , but the covers were expensive and scared to rip them , would that be too much ? I want them to be comfortable tho, should I go for it or trim down ?
Hello The, Thanks for the Sub! Welcome aboard. 3 inch memory foam does sound comfy. I don't think too much about doing something. I just do it. So you can also just do it. If you know what you want, just go for it. Please keep liking and watching!
I love your videos. I recently bought 1/2" scrim foam to do the backs of dining room chairs. I have never used scrim foam before. I've always purchased regular foam without the fabric. Which side do I place against the work? The cloth side or the foam side? Or does it even matter?
Hello Kefir, Thank you so much for saying so. For sewing scrim, the foam side is towards the material. The material backing of the scrim is on the bottom to hold the bottom thread and aid in sliding the material you are sewing through the sewing machine. Please keep liking and watching!
I make bags for SUV’s and I been using the 1/4” sew foam and Dacron for years. Yes I did put a #17 needle through my thumb once and believe me there is no resistance once your thumb is under a needle it just goes through as if nothing is there. I wasn’t able to use my thumb for a couple of days.
Hi, I like watching your videos I found them extremely informative. However I noticed some people use foam with their vinyl top installation and you dont. My curiosity is there certain ocassion that you need the foam and application that is not necessary? If so, when does it apply. Thank you in advance for the reply.
Hello Sportster, Thank you so much for saying so. Well, padded and non padded tops. Easy. Non luxury vehicles vinyl tops like Mustangs and Camaros were never padded. Luxury cars like Cadillac and Lincoln were always padded. See the difference? Well, there it is! Please keep liking and watching!

Rudy, is there a name for each of the 3 types of scrim foam you demonstrated? If I were to order the "better" quality 1/4 inch scrim foam, what do you call it? How about the best quality scrim foam? Again, when I order it, what is it called?
What foam would you recommend for a diamond stitched four wheeler seat that gets wet quite often? Also what foam would you recommend for an RV Dining room seat cusion. Thank you in advanced
Foams...those are different than suds, right? I DO appreciate the explanations in this video very much. I only use foams on rare occasion. Thanks. Man...I am already so glade I found this channel!
i was getting ready to order some foam when your video popped up , i am glad it did , i was going to order the pink scrim sew foam but not now i'll get the fabric backed from now on!!! i was wondering why sew foam and headliner foam is so expensive when seat foam seems to be priced , well , a lot more reasonable ? thank you for another timely video filled with good info!!!!
Hello John, Glad you saw it! Warning, never use headliner foam backed material as scrim. The foam fails. As far as i can see, all foams have gone up in price in , 2022, 2023. Please keep liking and watching!

re-doing my dash and installing 1/8 or 1/4 inch closed cell. Then marine vinyl over it. My question is do i cover everything? or just to the top edge of dash for my nova.Any help on this would be greatly appriciayed.ty
Hello Supa, For recovering a dash on I'm assuming about a '69 Nova? I would just do the dashpad. 1/8" is kind of thin, 1/4" is a little thick for the closed-cell foam. If I had to choose, I think 1/4" would be easier to do, but will look padded. Why marine vinyl? Marine vinyl is the same as auto upholstery, but marine vinyl generally costs more. See my vinyl video: th-cam.com/video/WLYzglvx0hI/w-d-xo.html I hope this has been helpful for you. Please keep liking and watching!
On the Dacron pad to go over a rough foam on a motorcycle seat, do you glue the Dacron o the old foam? If so, just use the regular foam adhesive that you use when you spray your foam?
I frequently work with the precursors to those materials in my restorations. Spring cases, dunlopillow cushions, horsehair padding, jute, muslin and cotton ticking. I'm in the process of designing and building baking pans for the dunlopillow. The progressive rate of that cushion is very difficult to replicate. I found you need multiple layers of incresing density foam and it's still not 100%. As always, a very helpful video. Maybe for the new guys or DIY'ers might be where each foam would be used and in what thickness.
Good morning! Question, is it a certain side to lay my fabric down on the landau foam? Cause it’s a smooth side and a not so smooth side! Please let me know
Hello Clarence, to me, which side is top for Landau foam has never been that important to me. In reality, both sides get the glue anyway. Please keep liking and watching!
@@clarencemack4382 Hello Clarence, I was saying that it does not matter which side of the Landau foam is up or down, top or bottom, smooth or rough, It all ends up the same. Please keep liking and watching!
We have a Mazda 3 with seats that feel like I'm sitting on a board. What foam can be used to fix the seats and have a more comfortable seat for longer drives?
Hello My, you can replace some of the foam with medium density or put a layer of Dacron pad over your seat foam for more comfort. Please keep liking and watching!
@@oldschoolautoupholstery Thank you for the response. At least It gives me hope not to have to look for a seat replacement if this can solve the problem. I'm not familiar with Dacron, where can a dyi buy something like this if I ever decide to tackle this myself?
Hello User, I would say high density foam. But it is really up to the person sitting on the seat and their comfort level. Many riders feel their seats are too hard on long rides. Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Steemo, Material quality is not important when staring out. What is important is you getting some time with your sewing machine. Experience is the teacher. Go for it! Please keep liking and watching!
Hello Sugar, Scrim is primarily use when there is sewing to a vinyl or fabric material, such as sewn pleats. Other then that it can also me used anywhere you need foam. Please keep liking and watching!
Usually you are spot on, but your definition of density (and firmness) is just plain wrong. Density is simply the mass/volume. Most foams for upholstery is 1.2 to 3.0, though memory foam and latex foam can exceed 5lbs/Cubic Foot. Firmness is measured in ILD (Indentation load deflection). The ILD is measured on an 18 x 18 x 4 inch pad with a 8 inch circle (50 square inches) placed on the center. Load is increased until a deflection of 25% (1 inch) is achieved. This force is the ILD. Very soft is ~ 10 pounds, Firm is ~40 pounds, for example.

Hello Gary, Oh, a wise guy rocket scientist eh? I guess I see things differently. Low, medium and high density, firmness. Good enough for this old school guy. Hehe. Please keep liking and watching!
Sorry, but I don’t agree with you at all. I build mattresses for a living. I’m no expert, but I know a little about foam. Foam density is measured by how much it ways per cubic foot. I can buy a super cheap, low density foam 4” thick and it would be like sleeping on a concrete block. And I can buy a super high density foam 4” thick that could be softer than the previous. Firmness or softness has more to do with the type of foam rather than the density. High density foam is way more expensive and has better recovery so you don’t develop a dip or sag.

Please keep liking and watching!

re-doing my dash and installing 1/8 or 1/4 inch closed cell.
Can you make a video on when and when not to used screm?
