I find that both relatable and strange, because as a beginner, one of the first things I learned was to yarn over and always bring the hook towards you when attaching it to the yarn. But also, I've accidentally also done it the other way.
Lol been doing yarn under when going through stitches and yarn over when pulling through loops and didn't realize there was a difference. I'm going to try going strictly one type or another to see how it feels/looks
Definitely yarn over! I just can't be having to think about changing how I grab the yarn with every stitch. I would have to frog my project constantly.
Maybe it’s just because I haven’t been doing crochet long when I heard about this stitch a couple weeks back, but I can do both stitches really easily without thinking too much about it, it’s like a simple switch In my brain of muscle memory and after the first few stitches I don’t have to think about it, yarn under gives a lot more shape to detailed patterns but yarn over I think is better sometimes because I used it to crochet a snake face and the transitions between increases and decreases came out way too harsh in that one so I used yarn over for the face to make it look softer
i've accidentally learned to do yarn under when i just started crocheting, and now i can't relearn no matter how hard i try 😅 i love how neat those stitches look on toys!
@@EliseRoseCrochetyes they look awesome just wanted to say when all I knew how to do was chains I yearned under them when my fines were teaching me to crochet thy forced me to do yarn over until I got a hold of it 😂😂
Don’t feel bad… I accidentally learned how to crochet with my left hand instead of my right because the very first plan I used was left handed. Now I had to relearn how to crochet right handed. I still prefer left though 🤦🏻♀️
Not that I think you’re an expert but recently I made the switch and I noticed that sometimes using this stitch makes animals with soft faces look too harsh Do you think this would be an issue with my stitch consistency? Or is there a time and place for each stitch? I’m new
Same, I just started learning recently, and yarn under feels weird and uncomfortable to me. As someone who often gets tangled even in simple stitches, I think I will stick to YO for now :D
When I first started crocheting I learned to yarn over, so that's what I've stuck with this whole time. I didn't realize yarn under resulted in smaller stitches! I think I'll have to try that with my next amigurumi so my yarn skeins can stretch a _little_ further 😁
Now knowing both stitches it makes crochet so fun! There’s more variety and because of muscle memory after I decide to make the switch it only takes me a few stitches and then I don’t even think about it
Yarn under all the way! Certainly for amigurumi, but I also crochet most things that way, unless the pattern absolutely requires otherwise. It just makes neater stitches and is easier on my hands.
I find the terms yarn under and yarn over so difficult to conceptualize for some reason. It’s helpful for me to think about it as clockwise or anti/ counter clockwise. I don’t know why!
I know I always thought about the hook so the the word "under" makes me think of yarn over but I just made a trick where I usually just tell myself it’s the opposite of what I’m visualizing and I hold the yarn so that the hook is very clearly going over or under it so it’s easier to visualize and I don’t get confused
@queennsydney The terms are difficult to conceptualize, because it seems like one is supposed to move a yarn, while in reality it's THE HOOK being moved; in my language (Czech) the yarn over is called (take/scoop) *from below* and yarn under is called (take/scoop) *from above* and to my brain that makes more sense, you're moving a hook and describing the movement of the hook. Although I got used to the English terms yarn over and yarn under, they ARE confusing.
I’m so glad that I watched this video all the way through because this whole time I’ve been thinking that yarn under required putting the hook over the yarn both times, not just while the hook is through the two loops at the beginning.
Holy crap... I KNEW you could do the alternate yard under but I have never even thought to try it but I definitely am going to now!! That looks AMAZING for little stuffed animals! Thanks!! ❤ Will be trying very soon!!
Interesting. I learned something new from you today; thank you. I yarn over, and never gave it a single thought to yarn under. I'll try it. Have a good day!
I'm leaning towards yarn over lately since I like it when my amigurumis are really squishy, but I still use yarn under from time to time if I want a project to hold it's shape more
As i pretty much taught myself to crochet from pictures, I was using the yarn under method without even knowing. But then, when I started watching more youtube tutorials (after crocheting for a few years), I naturally switched to yarn over and now I'm having a harder time switching back.
I haven't done much amigurumi at all so I haven't really honed my preference, but there's also the 2nd yarn over that can be switched to yarn under. Someone made a video comparing all 4 ways (yo,yo ; yu,yo ; yo,yu, yu,yu). I'll have to find it again as I can't remember the result!
@chezarctica7386 I believe the video you're talking about is "X vs V Stitch Single Crochet | Which is Best for Amigurumi? | Yarn Under vs Yarn Over | Right Hand" from Knit Grit, posted 3 y ago. I've found it recently, it's very interesting.
I use yarn over for everything except amigurumi, and yarn under for amigurumi. I used TH-cam videos to relearn how to crochet about 1-1/2 years ago, and also to learn amigurumi about a year ago. I believe it was you ❤ that I learned the difference between over and under back when I first started with amigurumi, and since I was relearning crochet at almost the same time I was able to adjust my stitches based on what I’m crocheting. You are the best person to go to for anything amigurumi!!
I'm team "both". I know how to do both, and have naturally tight/neat stitch tension, so depending on the look I want, I will use either stitch. I love the look of yarn over because, to me, it looks warmer and friendlier for cute amigurumi. But on highly detailed amigurumi, yarn under provides the type of stitch definition I seek. I look at them both as being of equal merit, with neither being better than the other. Just as I love having many colors of yarn to choose from, I love having multiple textures and looks to pick. YO/YU are both tools in my toolbox.
I am team yarn under for all crochet. Your videos are where I recently learned that I have been crocheting unconventionally since I was seven (a long long time ago).
I visited my neighbour to learn crochet from her. I loved it and started creating the chains. It's basic and I will visit her again after 2 days, after I get accustomed to today's pattern by practising.
Well, you learn something new every day! I never knew there was a difference! I am starting an amigurumi today and I will try yarn under. I have always yarned over by habit. Thanks for the tip!
