How interesting! I've crocheted for 51 yrs and just never thought about the YU concept. Thank you for the comparisons because I do a lot of amigurumi and I'll just have to "get used" to the yarn under feel. Old dogs CAN learn new tricks if they want to! lol
Same, I am crocheting every day for 20 years and it's been three month I guess, that I've learned that there is another way to make crochet stitches. I've discovered it with GretaWings' channel, who's making amigurumis and, I've tried it, but it is a bit difficult if you've worked a V stich all your life, plus you must use a smaller crochet because X stiches have the habit to tighten by themselves.
Thank you so much for demoing all 4 permutations of this. Super helpful!! I've been doing YU-YU lately, but I find that the second YU often slips off my hook because of the strange angle. I'm actually so relieved to hear that I can do YU-YO instead. This gives me the best of both worlds-tighter stitches, and my loops don't fall off!
It’s so refreshing to hear of someone with dyslexia doing needlework! I also have dyslexia and dyscalculia, and I absolutely love needlework, though I often struggle with getting confused about what I’m doing, measurement, and keeping track of the counting. I’ve been practicing for 11 years now, and I still don’t feel like I’m all that great at it, but I keep at it because I enjoy it so much!
This video is sooooooooo underrated. Eveything about this explaination was on point. From all the prjects being labled for the whole video, two easy to compare examples (most videos will compare two different designs which, especially for a begginer like me, makes it hard to know what I'm looking at), pluuuus bonus examples. You answered all the questions I had--even the ones that came from watching other peoples explaination videos-- in a way that was super clear and stright forward. Thank you so much, I know that this is gonna be a great refrence as I keep learning
I started crocheting 3 days ago and do YU, YO. I did not think about it and just thought this is the most natural way of crocheting for me. Thank you so much for the video.😊
This video was a game changer for me. Thank you! This was so interesting because I never considered yarn under, yarn under VS yarn under, yarn over as an option. This explanation plus visuals were well done.
I found your channel yesterday and I just want to thank you for your explanations. You're so thorough and your voice is so nice! I've been knitting for a few years and o ly did a couple of things in amigurumi as presents and now I found this I want to do the Yoshi project I started for my son like this. I'd only done the eyes sockets anyway so far so it's no big deal. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video! I have an amigurumi kit, and it's pretty much going great, except that I hated how big then holes are from the yarn over, yarn over method. So, being an experienced sewist with a bunch of TH-camrs I regularly follow and look to for guidance, I knew there had to be someone teaching crochet on here who had a solution for this issue! And you did! Thanks again. 😁
This is such a great explanation video that shows the differences between all these techniques! I learned YO/YO from the Woobles kits earlier this year but now I want to try YU/YO next time to see how it feels. Thank you for this amazing video!
For the love! I’ve had the hardest time understanding YO and YU until now. And, apparently, I’ve just naturally migrated to a YU/YO technique. Grateful I’m not doing something wrong. Thank you for this video!
Thanks. Very clear and informative. I like the pink one best too. Will have to practice that. Just started amigurumi again. I've been crocheting 62 years.....I love to learn new techniques.
This was so extremely helpful. I've been trying to do the x stitch and was accidentally switching up my yarn over/under on the second part of the stitch. I'm self-taught so I never have anyone to look at what i'm doing and help me figure out what i'm doing wrong. this helped me troubleshoot quickly. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Both in crotcheting and in knitting I always kept confusing which way to wrap yarn around me needles and I've been wondering for quite a while now how exactly it affects the crochet. Thank you so much for this really informative and comprehensive video, I have a much better comparison in mind now!
Thank you for taking the time to go over the differences! I tried the yarn under technique before but I realized I was doing YO, YU and now I know why I disliked it so much 😂
My mom was left-handed and learned to knit and crochet like a right-handed person but with her left hand. I'm right handed thank you for this. I'm self-taught that she couldn't teach me. But I think I did this stitch at the beginning of my learning.
This is incredible...I always wanted to see a comparison and examples and this video is just perfection with how you explained it! Thank you so much...now to figure out how I am crocheting because it is just habit at this point. I really want to try your favorite methods as I love the look for amigurumi. Thank you again!!
This! It made everything so much easier to understand having examples there. And you explained it so well. I've kinda been struggling with understanding the difference, and was honestly feeling dumb. Thank you so much for your help!!
Okay am I the only one that didn't know people were doing front loop only for amigurumi?? o.0 I knew YU was preferred and I'm actually happy to see YU/YO being even better than YU/YU because I found that easier to do, but I've never tried front loop only! I usually do front loop only for decreases but thats the only time I do that!
I always did x and in every tutorial I saw, people would always do v. I was always worried because I was afraid I did it wrong but looking at both v and x side by side, I like x more better and I’m gonna continue doing it
Thank you, I’m just about to try my first amigurumi project… I knew a ‘different’ way to create the stitch was recommended. You show all the variations so clearly 👍😁
I just started crocheting for a few weeks and didn't realize that i was doing the yarn under, yarn over method😅 but somehow my projects turned out great. I'm still learning and this makes it easy to understand the different methods. I'll also try to do it and practice more for experience 😊 Thanks for sharing this❤❤
Omg thank you so much for this video!!! I've learned crocheting by yt-videos, but never realized where to put the yarn 🙈 It tooked me about 10 years too figure out why my dc (and aaaall the others) doesn't look like they should 😱 As I learend today: I did the yoyu-thing + I did the yo from the front 🤦♀️😂 Yesterday someone asks me, if I could see the difference between the two pieces she made. I was like "yes but I can't tell" she told me, that she used V for the first and X for the second one... V? X? Never ever heard about that. So I started searching... I'm german and there are several german videos about x and v, but they show where to put the HOOK. I looked them like 1000 times and didn't get it. But now I know where to put the YARN... life changing 🤩 and bonus, I found a name for the mess I did the last years (yoyu) Crocheting is much easier now when the yarn "runs" through the loops (it was really hard work to pull the yarn through the messy strings 😅) Long story short: Thank you ❤️ Ps: sorry if I made grammar mistakes 🙈
thank you for this! i've been starting to make more amigurumi specifically for the purpose of cat toys so it's extra important to keep the stuffing from poking out. i'll definitely have to try the yu, yo method!
After crocheting for 65 years, I tried the x stitch and I LOVE it. I'm making an amigurumi using yu yo technique and it is lots faster too because I don't have to keep adjusting my left hand. It just stays in place. I have a question though regarding wrapping the yarn for hdc, dc, etc. If It was asc I'd go straight into a stitch and THEN wrap, but when I have to wrap my yarn FIRST like for a hdc or dc, do I wrap over or under? Tyia
Wow ! Wonderful video. Your examples and explanations were thorough and easy to understand. I will be trying some of these out to see what difference they make for me in my work. I'm glad I found this video. Thank you for making it.
I've been crocheting since I was 13 and never really thought about yo yo vs yu yu. Since I've been making amigurumi toys its become more critical to have a tight stitch. I started doing yu yo by accident and find I really like it. You dont have the holes like in traditional sc so the stuffing doesn't show as much. Thanks for the comparison. Its really helpful.
I'm just like u. I also always did yarn unders even if the pattern said yarn over. Eventhough I did it bc I did not know the difference and thought it was easier for me!
It looks like the yarn under/yarn overr (the green ball) uses less yarn than the others. So if that's the case, when someone doesn't think they will have enough yarn for a project, maybe using that technique would help a person finish a project using their favorite yarn.
Great video! thank you! I watched a video on how to do the crochet x/cross stitch and they showed to do it YU then YO, but it seemed as if they were going through both loops, rather than just the front loop? Does anyone know what the difference would be?☺️ thanks!
Thank U so much for this video. I just started crocheting few months ago. And I never pay attention to the YO/YU thing as I just beginning to learn. And some stitches would look better than the other. And I kept googling how I make my ST to look more X instead of V bcoz I accidentally make 3 amigurumi that has the X ST and they look so neat & bubbly, and I loved it! But I didn’t know how I did that until I found ur video. Tqtq ❤️❤️❤️
omg I was trying to figure out why my stitches were looking so different (as a beginner) and clicked on this out of... i'm YOYOing (ahah)! I think because im left handed but am holding the hook in my right hand (it just felt easier)
I'm glad you liked the yu,yo the best. I tried doing the yu,yu when I found out about it. The fist yu worked easily for me but I struggled getting the second yu through the loops efficiently. I noticed some people did yu,yo so I just went with that and have been doing it since. Also, you are the second person I've seen do front loop only. I wonder if you could do a response or a video on why that's better or how it changes things. Can you just do that for any project?
I do FLO for amigurumi, and I think it’s because it draws it kinda close to the front and leaves the back loop positioned behind it in a way that blocks the stuffing from behind seen, if that makes sense? But I’m not completely sure if that’s why. I think it just looks more “bubbly”. I should do a video about front loop only vs back loop only and the difference in going through both loops, too!
Love the video! I think the yu and yo is super cool, i might transition to that one too! Thanks for the video! Side note: your voice and way of speaking (certain words but also just your pattern and inflection) reminds me so much of Brit from CrimeJunkies Podcast 😂 dunno if anyones ever said that before or if youre familiar. Just thought I'd share. Happy crocheting!!
I always hated how the stuffing shiwed between my stitches. I had no idea it was due to my yo yo method! Gonna try out yu yo! Its gonna be a pain to commit to muscle memory, but heres to hoping it wont take too long!
I am lately having a hard time with some patterns because I usually do v stitches and they do x stitches and I compare the sizes of my amigurumi and the one from the pattern and my looks huge! Today I decided to try the x stitch but it hurts my hands too much so I think I’ll try to do yu-yo and see how my finished toy looks like!
Wow, I’ve been crocheting for almost 53 yrs, and love making amigurumi, And since I’ve been watching more videos, I found out that I have a pencil grip and now found out that I crochet untraditionally, Amigurumi or not my single crochet makes little x’s,, So I was taught this way or I just did it this way because it was easier or felt better to me, or maybe because I was to be left handed and my mom made me right handed, I don’t know. But this is very interesting
I think it gives the stitch a more “bubbly” appearance which I enjoy for amigurumi. It can also help with certain patterns by leaving the back loop free to be picked up with certain designs.
I use YU,YO because I crochet really tight in amigurumi and the second part of the stitch was very difficult in YU,YU and hurt my knuckles a lot. I also think the Xs look better with YU/YO. I'm not familiar with doing amigurumi in front loop only and it seems like it diminishe your Xs somewhat. Maybe it's just the camera. Nice comparison tutorial.
I’m curious if doing any of the YU techniques in other stitches, e.g. dc (double crochet), would be necessary if I was making a piece of clothing? I made a bucket hat a month or 2 ago using the YU YO technique with the dc stitch and thought if I went a bit extra and should’ve done the YO YO technique. Side note, your video was super helpful and gave me extra knowledge I didn’t know about before! Thank you sooooooooo much!💖
It's just a preference, I think it makes the stitches "pop" more which looks cuter (IMO) and tends to hide the stuffing just a bit more. But again, this is just a personal preference.
@@KnitGrit Thanks! I really liked your explanation, and I like both yu/yo and yu/yu better than the regular way. Can't decide which one I prefer though.
I am a YU/YO crocheter 😁 I'm sure you have a pretty good reason for choosing to do FLSC than the standard SC and I hope you can share thus, please? Thank you so much 👍👍👍
Since she hasn't answered yet, I thought I'd tell you that I've heard many others who do amigurumi say that they prefer FLSC because it leaves less of any holes for the stuffing to show through/makes a more solid fabric.
I go through the front loop only while working on amigurumi. It causes the back loop to drop and tends to hide stuffing a bit more, and also gives a bit more of a “bubbly” look to the amigurumi which I like. 😊 but honestly, however you like to do it is the right way for you. 😁
Please stop moving the balls around so much when you are handling them to show the stitches. I do love how you explained the difference. It was something that I needed to know (I'm trying Amigurumi for the first time). But I could hardly distinguish between them from all the movement while you were handling them. I still like your video and gave it a thumbs up.
I've been making amigurumi for years and my items always looked taller than what they were supposed to be. Do you think this will make a difference as far as the height of the stitch?
Have you been able to determine if you think it did make a difference? I suspect it would not make a noticeable difference because I think height of the stitches is just all determined by how far/high you pull up your yarn whether it's YO or YU.
I always did yarn under... i misunderstood yarn over as get working yarn... and i did yarn under... so... im staying with yarn under... and yes... i am also dyslexic
I just do them the same as my invisible decrease, it’s just the way I wrap it that’s different. I put my hook through both stitches I want to decrease and then single crochet like normal. 😊 Hope that makes sense!
A lot of people don’t even notice how they change their wrapping. I only figured it out because it was driving me crazy that my stitches looked nothing like my mothers’ stitches and she’s the one who taught me 😂 She YO YO and I YU YU
I am 80 years old and have crocheted for over 70 of those years and am truly surprised I never knew this before! I love it and Thank you!!!
YES! And she did great explaining it too! Thank you
HI STARTED TO CROCHET SINCE I WAS 7 YR'S OLD 53 YR'S NOW 60 LUV THE NEW IDEAS SOOO REFRESHING THANK U ❤❤❤❤

Found out I do the yu/yo technique, I didn’t realize until starting amigurumi how much of a difference in makes! TFS
It really does! ♥️
Thanks 60 years. And never questioned it. I love that you continued to experiment. I've always been a proponent of "what happens if i do....." 6:08
I started crocheting 3 days ago and do YU, YO. I did not think about it and just thought this is the most natural way of crocheting for me. Thank you so much for the video.😊
I have seen the “x” stitch as the mixed. I really appreciate your show and tell on the differences.
This is extremely underrated and might be the best crochet technique explanation for amigurumi I've ever seen. Thank you so much!!

This is the best video by far on this subject!!! Thank you 😘
I'm a self-taught crocheter and it seems that I trained myself to do the yu, yo. I just went with the method which fit into my workflow 🤷♀️
Same! I am self taught through TH-cam, and I’m also dyslexic so it just kinda stuck!
This is incredible...I always wanted to see a comparison and examples and this video is just perfection with how you explained it! I am a total beginner. I only crocheted a hat yesterday. Just learned. Now I want to do arigurumi. Thanks for this tutorial. Pretty cool. ❤ 😮
This! It made everything so much easier to understand having examples there. And you explained it so well. I've kinda been struggling with understanding the difference, and was honestly feeling dumb. Thank you so much for your help!!

I generally go through both loops too, I also haven't heard anyone say they use front loop only all the time.
I've never heard of flo thru the whole ami! Crazy!
Flo is generally used for an entire piece if you’re doing color changes bc the Flo keeps the color changes from staggering
I always did x and in every tutorial I saw, people would always do v. I was always worried because I was afraid I did it wrong but looking at both v and x side by side, I like x more better and I’m gonna continue doing it
The pure science & engineering of textile crafts is always a nice factor to remind myself of.
RESPECT. Thank you for your attention to detail and talent explaining the intricate differences.
I've learned crocheting by yt-videos, but never realized where to put the yarn 🙈
It tooked me about 10 years too figure out why my dc (and aaaall the others) doesn't look like they should 😱 As I learend today: I did the yoyu-thing + I did the yo from the front 🤦♀️😂

I'm german and there are several german videos about x and v, but they show where to put the HOOK. I looked them like 1000 times and didn't get it. But now I know where to put the YARN... life changing 🤩 and bonus, I found a name for the mess I did the last years (yoyu)
Crocheting is much easier now when the yarn "runs" through the loops (it was really hard work to pull the yarn through the messy strings 😅)
Long story short: Thank you ❤️
Ps: sorry if I made grammar mistakes 🙈
thank you for this! i've been starting to make more amigurumi specifically for the purpose of cat toys so it's extra important to keep the stuffing from poking out. i'll definitely have to try the yu, yo method!
Thank you for doing this awesome video!!! My adhd brain appreciates it!
I started doing yu yo by accident and find I really like it. You dont have the holes like in traditional sc so the stuffing doesn't show as much. Thanks for the comparison. Its really helpful.
If im understanding correctly when you do amigurumi you generally crochet in the FLO I do use the yuyo technique usually
Thank you for this video. Beginner here and this was helpful.
Yarn under, yarn over works best for me ❤ Thank you so much
I'm just like u. I also always did yarn unders even if the pattern said yarn over. Eventhough I did it bc I did not know the difference and thought it was easier for me!

Hello from Scotland and Thankyou for your channel
Great tutorial!! I like the Yu Yo too.
Great video! thank you! I watched a video on how to do the crochet x/cross stitch and they showed to do it YU then YO, but it seemed as if they were going through both loops, rather than just the front loop? Does anyone know what the difference would be?☺️ thanks!
For the bat wing, fold the future wing in half and whip stitch across.
Tqtq ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful and thorough explanation! Glad I found your channel! Subscribed!!!! 😊
I was having a hard time understanding what people meant by yu/yo. So thank you for explaining!
omg I was trying to figure out why my stitches were looking so different (as a beginner) and clicked on this out of... i'm YOYOing (ahah)! I think because im left handed but am holding the hook in my right hand (it just felt easier)
You just earned a subscribe from me!!!! Awesome video!
Thank you!!! Trying to improve on amigurumi and I think this will make a huge difference.
TYSM FOR MAKING THIS! Love the comparison and helps me A LOT! 🥰
OMG this video is the BEST!!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉
Wow, I’ve been crocheting for almost 53 yrs, and love making amigurumi, And since I’ve been watching more videos, I found out that I have a pencil grip and now found out that I crochet untraditionally, Amigurumi or not my single crochet makes little x’s,, So I was taught this way or I just did it this way because it was easier or felt better to me, or maybe because I was to be left handed and my mom made me right handed, I don’t know. But this is very interesting
Yay! I'm here for the premiere 🙌
Thank you. Your tutorial made so much sense to me, thank you 😊
Great video, I learned so much ❤
Thank you for explaining and demonstrating!
Thank you! I was wanting to see the visual differences between all of these as I’ve seen them done all of these ways. Very helpful!
im not dyslexic but i am autistic and struggle a lot with lefts and rights- i had no idea there was a difference, i was doing yarn unders mostly!
Thank you! Exactly what I needed! ❤
Thank you for this explanation! This helps me
Newbie here. I’ve been pulling my yarn through both loops. How does pulling through the front loop only change things (as she does in this video)?
I think it gives the stitch a more “bubbly” appearance which I enjoy for amigurumi. It can also help with certain patterns by leaving the back loop free to be picked up with certain designs.
I do the yu then the yo. Doing the yu the 2nd time was hard for me. I really like the yu, yo way.
I like how the YU/YO looks the best but habit has me YU/YU 😂
Thank you!!! Wonderful explanation!!
Does anyone know why the stitch count would be off when doing increases, or even just keeping the count the same?
Could you make a short only showing the way to do those 4 stitches and how they look?
I should do that! That is a great idea ❤️
OMGOSH thank you for sharing.
From South Africa.
Thank you.
Great video, thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you very much❤
You're welcome 😊
I use YU,YO because I crochet really tight in amigurumi and the second part of the stitch was very difficult in YU,YU and hurt my knuckles a lot. I also think the Xs look better with YU/YO. I'm not familiar with doing amigurumi in front loop only and it seems like it diminishe your Xs somewhat. Maybe it's just the camera. Nice comparison tutorial.
OMG I have always done yarn under lol. Without know it i have the yarn under finger too. Lol I have always done that
I’m curious if doing any of the YU techniques in other stitches, e.g. dc (double crochet), would be necessary if I was making a piece of clothing?
I made a bucket hat a month or 2 ago using the YU YO technique with the dc stitch and thought if I went a bit extra and should’ve done the YO YO technique.
Side note, your video was super helpful and gave me extra knowledge I didn’t know about before! Thank you sooooooooo much!💖
When doing amigurumi, is it common to use only the front loop? I’m just starting out. Thanks.
I prefer going through front loop only (FLO) with amigurumi. I like how it makes the stitches look “bubbly”.
This is my first time seeing someone using FLO for amigurumi. How does it differ from using both loops? Is it better?
Loved this ❤😊
Awww, thanks! ❤️
Thanks for the explanation! Why only the front loop?
It's just a preference, I think it makes the stitches "pop" more which looks cuter (IMO) and tends to hide the stuffing just a bit more. But again, this is just a personal preference.
@@KnitGrit Thanks! I really liked your explanation, and I like both yu/yo and yu/yu better than the regular way. Can't decide which one I prefer though.
Thank you!❣
I’ve always yu/yo… so this is surprising to see that that wasn’t the norm? But it’s good to hear that it’s actually better to use 😂
How do you decrease using any of the YU?
I've always done the x stitch yu,yo. I find the yu,yu version hurts my wrist.
I’m the exact opposite! Probably based off of what we are used to doing 🤪
@@playhooky hmmm, i did try FLSC but my YU/YO still gave a better look altho my ami is a bit smaller than FLSC.
SO helpful!!!
Glad it was helpful!
You only seem to hook the front loop. I go through both loops.
I think it definitely could, especially depending on your tensioning.
Have you been able to determine if you think it did make a difference? I suspect it would not make a noticeable difference because I think height of the stitches is just all determined by how far/high you pull up your yarn whether it's YO or YU.
Question.are you going through both loops or just the front loop?
Front loop only
Thanks for the video and explanation.
Glad I could help! ❤️
Amazing
I always did yarn under... i misunderstood yarn over as get working yarn... and i did yarn under... so... im staying with yarn under... and yes... i am also dyslexic
How can you do decrease for x stitches
I just do them the same as my invisible decrease, it’s just the way I wrap it that’s different. I put my hook through both stitches I want to decrease and then single crochet like normal. 😊 Hope that makes sense!
I’ve actually always done yu,yo I thought it was the only way to do it until last year lmao
A lot of people don’t even notice how they change their wrapping. I only figured it out because it was driving me crazy that my stitches looked nothing like my mothers’ stitches and she’s the one who taught me 😂 She YO YO and I YU YU
Cool thanks.!!!
How I learned I've been crocheting wrong (yu, yo) for almost 20 years
