Todd Said Something Rather Concerning Tonight

- I got home for the day and went upstairs. Todd greeted me with a Hello and then asked for brushes. After his brushes, he went to his food mousey and ate some kibble. Todd had some surgery a few weeks back to correct some issues with his mouth that were causing him pain. At this point, the issues should be fixed and he should be pain-free. After eating his kibble he went to his sound board and said Ouch Head. He is just learning his body parts and knows Back and Head. I am concerned he is still having issues. I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow just to make sure everything is okay.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 45 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

So now we're really at the point where this splendid, smart cat will come to the vet with "he said he's still in pain, can you check him again?"
I think we are. This was the goal at the start of the button training.
That's good, it's something you can train, though a little differently, to very young human babies too, through a simplified sign language.
Amazing isn’t it? Hope he’s better soon!
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks That you care enough and take this seriously has me in tears, dude. This is the first time I've seen Todd and I love him already.
As a human who experiences TMJD, I can agree with Todd: Ouch, head!!
@@redfailhawk I'm glad you are here. Yes, I take this very seriously. While we have fun and love our time together Todd has some medical issues I have to watch closely for flair-ups and I want him to be able to tell me before it gets bad enough I see it.

Dad “he told me”
Vet 😐
Yes, this is going to be interesting. Lol
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksNice that you have the video to show the vet if that level of detail is helpful.
I tried telling my vet my dog was having headaches. They didn't believe me, checked her for a few seconds and said she's fine. A few months later she suddenly passed away in her sleep after a seizure and there was blood running from her ear. 😭 I don't take my animals there anymore.

I have had the same vet for 20+ years. If I call and say something is off, she knows me well enough to get my pets in.. I wonder how she would react to all the button talking. "So.. my cat said her head hurts. I need to bring her in.. Yes. I am sure she *said* her head hurts. You see she has these buttons..."
😄
Odd, I remember reading this comment before. But I’ve not watched this video before??? Weird.
There’s a fluentpet summit today but I’m struggling to register at the moment - Billi from Billispeaks will be there and several others! I’m sure you and Todd should be there….I’ll post when I find the link!
Billie and Todd are probably the most advanced talking pets I have seen (at least among cats). He learned to tell about pain so fast.
Thank you.
@@teijaflink2226 Me too. The dog @puppyparkerposey is also really impressive. Her level of abstract thinking is just amazing. She got a new food puzzle and said "stranger no love you" to express that she didn't like it much, for example. And she's called the kitchen "room treato". Sorta like Todd in this video, you can just see him thinking, well, I don't have a button for mouth or teeth yet, so I guess I'll have to make do with Head being the closest available option.
@@rdklkje13 “Room treato” for the kitchen is absolutely lovely!

It's a possibility, I hope that is all it is.
You're so very smart to have added the body part buttons!
Nevermind Todd smart enough to use them! I was enjoying the video so much until he said "ouch head". I sincerely hope everything goes well with the vet. Love and prayers to you both ❤.
Thank you, I appreciate it. I will update everyone.
I love that gadget. Every pet owner should have that.
Todd loves it.
It is amazing how smart cats are. I have seen that if given the proper tools, and taught how to use them, they can communicate to us- which is very important when something is wrong. On another channel, I saw a cat tell its human that it had a splinter in its paw. The human was able to get the splinter removed, and the kitty was ok. Now, I have seen another video of a cat communicating to its human that something was wrong. I hope Todd is better now.
Thank you Toddbis okay, here is the update video on what the vet found. th-cam.com/video/6-Dwl8bAL-s/w-d-xo.html. Which Cat had the splinter? I missed that one. I remember Bunny saying she or Otter had something in their paw but not a cat.
I wish my Ernesto had learned this way of expressing himself years ago. My poor Ernesto suffered from IBD for most of his adult life, and since he was not yet a senior cat, I never took him to the vet. But one day when he was about 9, he stopped eating. It was due to a severe IBD flair up, poor kitty... He's 16 now, and I manage it with prescription diet and meds, but it breaks my heart that he suffered for so many years!
This was the whole reason I started Todd on the buttons, I wanted him to be able to tell me if something was wrong. Paulie was just diagnosed with kitty IBD.
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks
Wow so sorry about the IBD! Unfortunately, Ernesto lost interest in the wet prescription food (he used to LOVE it!). Now he's sick and tired of the dry version. I find it entices him when i sprinkle some flavored probiotics on his dry. Purina makes packets of 30/box, but they recently changed the ingredients, and it's not as substantial. If you see the white box, that's the better box. The black banner box is still good, in terms of probiotics and flavor... just none of the other stuff. PS. Chewy is advertising the old box, but delivering the new black box.
Anyway, i hope it all goes well with your kitties!
Aww I’m glad he could tell you. It’s usually so hard with pets because they can’t tell you what’s wrong
Yes, this was my goal from the beginning of starting to use the buttons. I want he to be able to tell me when he is not feeling well.
Oh he’s gorgeous and brilliant!!!!! Truly incredible how well he comunicates through those buttons! 👍❤😻😻😻
Thank you so much 😊
Poor Todd ,I hope it's nothing .Maybe he had a bit of a headache or was remembering that his mouth used to ouch while eating .
Since the Happy came a couple of minutes after the ouch head, I'm hoping he was saying he remembers it hurting, and it doesn't now, and he's happy. I want to get him checked out just to make sure there is no discomfort there still.
Todd is just the cutest little boy ever.😸🐾👏
Aww thank you!
What a sweet Dad❤
Thank you
Awwe, daddy gives long cuddles. So cute how he reaches up for hugs ❤
Yes, he will stand up and reach for cuddles, which is a huge sign of trust, he has balance issues and can't stand on his back legs for more than a second or two before he falls over. He wants a hug and is sure I will get him before he falls. I have a 98% success rate, lol.
Those buttons are amazing. 😮
They are and he loves being able to tell me his wans and needs.
I'm wondering if he might have some matted fur around the ears. Sometimes it can show up there and in the leg pits and can cause pain.
Yes, that can happen, but in this case, no. He had had oral surgery, and it should have all been good by the time of this video, but at the vet, he found some irritation at his suture site.
Todd is smart and trusts Dad will respond to what he communicates with his buttons and do what he needs to to get him help.
Billie from “Billie Speaks” uses her buttons to tell her Mom, a Veterinarian, that she has an ouch and where it is.
That was my goal from the start to have him be able to tell me when he is not feeling well.
People like to say that cats just randomly walk across the buttons, or only use them to ask for snacks. Todd begs to differ. He's so deliberate and thoughtful, you can see him thinking about his choices.
Yes, he is very thoughtful with his choices. You can tell when he hits the wrong button that he will put his ears back and then stomp the button he meant to push. Lol.
Welll that earned a sub
Aww, thank you, I appreciate it. I'm glad you are here!
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Daisy happy now
you named a cat Todd, this is what happens
Lol
How old is Toddy? Maybe it's arthritis?
I have had three dogs. All of them began symptoms around 11-12 years old, and the first two lived to be around 16 years old. The first symptoms in dogs include not being able to jump onto furniture as well, not being willing to run as much (I take mine on bikerides), and wanting "butt-rubs" or back massages more often. (The way Toddy here wanted a brush, and seemed to enjoy the back more than the belly brush.)
I know with human spinal issues, the neck and head can have pain if the spine is feeling stressed and painful.
I am no cat owner, but Toddy seems a bit on the larger side for a cat. In dog breeds, being larger than the breed is supposed to be can also cause spinal issues earlier.
For dogs, nutritional supplements DO help a lot to fend off arthritis in the early stages. I hope poor Toddy is feeling better soon.
(P.S. Can you bring the buttons to the vet, and maybe Toddy can give feedback on the spot there? The change in location might affect his willingness to reapond, but it might help.)
Todd is 6 years old. He had just had oral surgery a few weeks prior, and one of the incisions was a little inflamed, most likely from biting down on a piece of kibble the wrong way.

Thank you for replying. I saw one of the follow-up videos after commenting here. I'm so glad to hear he's doing better, and that the vet found the problem right away.
Your story here is a great argument for teaching animals to "talk" via buttons, if they can. (I know not every animal takes to it.) How much better our care of our pets could be if they could only tell us when they are in pain or feeling sick!
Hugs and scritches to Toddy!
Look now, don't try and manipulate Dad.
It's bad enough we get manipulated by our fur babies without these buttons. 😆

Todd’s daddy…was this a taught thing after buying Todd this communication board? Did you have to go thru pressing the “food” button then give him small amount of food? Then the same with “brush”, continually pressing each Galatea button and performing the task over n over for hi, to learn? Hi Zeke's mum and welcome! I'm glad you are here. Todd did not get a food button until he was 30+ words in. I didn't want him just using the board for food, I wanted him to learn the concepts. I train Todd just by modeling for the beginning. I pressed his bird toy button and then played it with him. I did that twice and walked 6 he knew that got him his toy. I have repeated this process with all his buttons. There is a link to the buttons in the video description that should get you 12% off anything totaling over 50.00 at checkout. All of us!
@@iciclecold2991 Yes, my point LOL
Yeah, one time our cat woke up and was just screaming at us but to go outside but he was also limping. I asked my brother(who is technically the owner since he found the cat when he was a month old. The cat was a month old when my brother found him otherwise I wouldn't be alive cause I'm the youngest, 20 and the oldest brother is like 20 uh 28 I think? Lol close enough) and he found out that the cat DID have something stuck in his paw😅. Today when the cat came back home from his daily frolicking, he came back with a bunch of scratches and he was bleeding too. It's time we stop letting him go outside alone and I would gladly volunteer if it wasn't for this disease and the weather. It's getting colder now that Fall is here and when the weather changes it hurts me and the cold hurts even more. It's just one of the extremely dangerously cons sickle cell has🙄 So that's a problem. I can feel negative energy from every living thing and I can't even go outside and stay out there for too long otherwise I would end up back in the hospital and it's been two years since I've been in AND I'm about to transfer to adult care!??! No thank you. I'm gonna do whatever it takes to stay put of the hospital and if that means giving this cat to someone else and making sure that they protect him at all costs, then so be it! I love animals but I HAVE to take care of myself to. THIS DISEASE KILLS PPL AND I'M NOT TALKING ABOUT IT MENTALLY, I'M TALKING ABOUT IT PHYSICALLY! Y'all can look up what sickle cell does and you'll see what I mean. Also, I've hurt myself of the 11th last week and now my finger doesnt look or feel better so imma go back to urgent care tomorrow and get ut looked at not to mention it looks like I'm starting to get a fever which isn't good because if I do get a fever, I HAVE to the hospital :( and I hate the hospital. The after affects of morphine makes me feel ill and their food sucks. For some reason Iiterally cannot eat what doesn't taste nor feel good meaning I CANNOT choke it down(stupid humans! Like bro, how would you feel if you had to choke down something that you hate and just throw it back up afterwards?!?!). I mean, who doesn't?
kitties are notorious for not indicating pain to their guardians! it comes from them showing strength in the wild because vulnerability will make them a target! my kitty is a big communicator too and i'm going to buy a soundboard soon too!

I have a 26 year old son with severe autism (not "technically" autism its a chromosome issue but it manifests almost exactly like autism. He is partially verbal (mostly through stimming, repeating movie lines, lines from book or TV shows). I do sometimes wonder if some sort of communication board might be helpful, as I don't know if/when he is in pain as he never complains. I tried to ask him about headaches a few times but I don't think he really knows what that is. There was one child in his special ed class who did have an electronic talking board as he was completely non verbal.

My furballs definitely know certain words, like “hungry”, “eat”, “dinner” and” treat”…😂
When I make dinner for myself, and they look at me, I say “mama eat,”and they understand it’s not for them.
They understand that I am mama, and know “scratch” (as in rubs), “play”, “toy”, “window”, and “outside” (screened porch.)
Maybe I should get some buttons for them. But how do you teach “ouch”? I can tell if they don’t feel good when they loaf (sit shaped like a loaf of bread) and/or don’t want to eat or play. But I’d love to be able to hear it from them.
Ouch takes time to teach and model because you have to wait for something to happen. I use when Todd would dig his claws in to hard when making biscuits on him. I would tell him Todd ouch Daddy. When cooking in the kitchen he was underfoot and got his tail stepped on. I picked him up and apologized and told him Dad sorry for ouching Todd's tail. Etc..

I would like to get those so my cat can tell me stuff 2 but i don't know if she will she tells me things now without it where do you buy them buttons?
The is a link in he video description. The link will also get you 12% off 50.00 or more.
He's a beauty!!
Thank you!
Can you update us?
Was there a problem?
Thank you for your concern about Todd. Here is the update video on what the Vet found. th-cam.com/video/6-Dwl8bAL-s/w-d-xo.html
Definitely get him checked out.
Another option, since he has balance issues from the Herpes or whatever it was that he got from his mother as a kitten, is maybe Todd gets headaches.
That is a possibility.
I love how most cats look like tweaks or total stoners.
😆
Aahhhhh … I just stumbled upon you & have SO MANY QUESTIONS !!! Just amazing ~
🩵🫨😻🩵
First off, welcome, and I'm glad you are here. Ask your questions, and I will answer them if I can.
Concerning, great that he can now express this, and also nice to see him tell you that he's happy to be able to let you know what's going on/that he was feeling better again (whichever may have been the case).
Yes, and thank you.
What is amazing about these talk buttons is it proves CATS know exactly what you're saying and are deliberately arrogant rude Bastards 😂😂
😂
I'm subscribing!! I gotta keep up with Todd. And I think you are awesome too!! ☺
Aww, thank you, and I'm glad you are here!
2 days later, could you give us some news? We love you Todd and Todd’s Dad! ❤
Yes. He is good. I will be doing an update tonight
@@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks Looking forward to see you two, love frome France 🙏
If my cat had talking buttons, she would just use one, maybe two -- "whatever" and "later"
Lol, Glamour would be like that too.
This is different
from learning how to understand cats
from my long-term observations .
Longer-term observing has given me a perspective
I live with Cats
They love company,
Especially if they have been isolated from stimulus.
The want attention
they need attention
Touch , grooming , sunlight warmth love trust and respect 😊
My cats talk to me in their actions and I understand what they want.
ATTENTION FULLY FOR AT LEAST 3 MINUTES 😊😅😂
Ooops I missed feed me 😂
It is different and Todd still talks to us with body language and meows just like always. This just gives us the ability to narrow down what he wants or needs. Before, I always knew when he wanted to play but not with what toy before trial and error, I knew when he wanted affection but not if it was pets, cuddles, belly rubs, or being brushed.
I was wondering. What is the process of teaching a cat how to use these buttons? We have three in our family. Our oldest is 3 1/2 years old, the next is 2 1/2 and the baby is 1Y/3M.
My best advice is to go to the FluentPet website. They have a beginners guide you can download for free. There is more info there than I can type here. After reading that, if you have a specific question, please ask, and I will help if I can.
I think “happy” meant “thank you.” I think he was happy for the validation and concern.
Possibly
Maybe like most people, he was thinking about what he had been through & just wanted to talk about the past "ouch head". I imagine most of his days are rather uneventful when Dad isn't home 🤷🏻♀️
That is certainly a possibility but in this case he was right. Here is a link to the update video and what the vet found. th-cam.com/video/6-Dwl8bAL-s/w-d-xo.html
Maybe Todd was remembering when his head was ouchy. Now, happy.
He went to the vet the next day. Here is a link to the update video on what the vet found. th-cam.com/video/6-Dwl8bAL-s/w-d-xo.html
Although after the vet visit he was telling me head happy, head happy 😊
Oh, _no-please_ don't leave us hanging! Is Todd OK? Is his head still OUCH? What did the vet say?
Here is the update video on what the vet said and found. th-cam.com/video/6-Dwl8bAL-s/w-d-xo.html
If these button-trained talking dogs, cats, or birds saw a murder take place, they could solve the crime by identifying pictures in a court of law. Done.
He did finger Glamour for slapping him upside the head while he was sleeping and glared at here while saying No. Lol. 😄
I'm curious, when you took him to the vet did you tell them that Todd was complaining himself, as in talking to you with his buttons? Just so curious about how the vet would react to telling them that your cat talks to you.
Please don't misunderstand though, both OP and anyone reading, I'm not saying a vet's response or reaction should encourage or discourage using these buttons. I'm fascintated with them and wish I'd had them before my Ozzy passed. But I can imagine certain vets being like, "Yeah right."
Yes, I did tell them. The vet tech looked a little skeptical, but the vet believed me and made sure he he looked at his ears, eyes, sinuses, etc, since he said head ouch.
May i ask what artist painted the profile pic of Todd? I love it! And i love you and Todd ❤ his beautiful coat reminds me of my Gus. Hope he is feeling better!
It was sent to me by one of Todd's fans. I believe he is in Germany
Maybe you accidently hurt his head when you were brushing Todd.
He had an irritation on his mouth from his oral surgery. It looked like he bit on a piece of kibble wrong and rubbed an incision.
