Todd Is Giving Me Daily Updates On His Mouth Now.

  • A month ago Todd had some oral surgery done. A week ago he irritated an incision by biting on a piece of kibble wrong and told me "Head Ouch". I took him to the vet to get checked out and make sure he was okay. Since then he has told me daily that his head is happy (pain-free).
    Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 45 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. If you would like to see more of Todd and his day-to-day life please visit his Facebook page.

    So enjoy these updates. It is clear Todd is not just using his buttons for single rewards like toy or food. He is continuing a dialogue over several days about his state of health, very iimportant as he likes to eat dry food and now that seems comfortable and something that bothered him for some time, but not known until he had his buttons. Can’t wait for Todd to have more buttons and we learn more about his thoughts. Amazing!

      @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks true facts. My babies lived until almost 20, too. All short-haired tuxes but one. One of my tuxes had a "broken mask" like Todd's, but he was gray and white. The last kitties to leave me did so last year, so it's still a fairly recent loss, but it's true. Two decades is a lot of time for a cat, yet I'd still wish they'd have kept me company for another two... I wish they would've had access to those buttons, too, but by the time they became a thing, they were already pretty old. Thank you for taking good care of sweet Tood and sharing our language with him! ❤

    It's not just that Todd is telling you how he feels in the present, but that he's comparing the present feeling to the past. I find this fascinating! When he first started telling you he was in pain, the buttons were a major benefit to help you help him. That's when I really started wishing I could get buttons for the two cats that took over my home this year. Being strays, one severely starved and suffering systemic infection, and the other FIV+, I know they'll have health problems in the future, and I want to be able to keep track of their health before it's an issue. Having helped care for my son's feral street rescue who was older, and having felt helpless when he had symptoms that turned out to be very serious, life-threatening conditions, I just wish he could have told us he was in pain. My son only had him 3 years before he had to say goodbye at an emergency veterinary hospital after a crisis of non-stop seizures. I can't help but think he must have had headaches prior to the seizures. It was probably a brain tumor, plus he had advanced kidney disease. I just think it's so nice that Todd can tell you what hurts, so you can help him get treatment. And then to get confirmation from him that he knows he's not in pain any more is just the cherry on top. ❤

    • @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks
      @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      First off thank you for giving the two kitties a good home. I am also very sorry about your son's cat. Todd being able to tell me what is going on with his health was the whole reason we started the buttons as he has some chronic issues I must keep a close eye on. The added benefit is he can tell me his other wants and needs.

    Hmm, I’ve read all the comments and think what Todd’s doing is even smarter than those suggestions. I think timing is relevant here. He loves his Dad so much that I reckon the slight reprimand of Please don’t claw the board made him want to change the conversation quickly to something dad would respond to positively. Therefore… Happy head. Dads voice gets all warm and super friendly and all is very well in Todd’s world. He has manipulated the conversation… for everyone’s benefit (but mostly his!)

      @@TheChroniclesofToddToddTalksWell I don’t know Todd like you do, but he definitely felt your comment, his ears went back further than the button error. If I’m right talking about Glamour was just the first thing he thought of to get everyone’s mind off his faux pas, his hesitation was partly because Glamour wasn’t his main concern then, but then he hit on a better conversational gambit!

    This is so amazing to watch. I'm not sure how in the world you get him to do that......but you do!!!!! I would love to try it with my Kip He is 5 years old.......is that a good age to try this gadget? Are they really expensive? How long does it take for you to get a response.....week.....month.....more than a month?

      It is all patience and modeling. Some cats will do it and someone. Todd is the only one of three in my house who chose to do this. I don't think that age is a limiting factor. Billi was 12 when she started and made it to 70 words. There is no set time for your learner to acknowledge the buttons and start using them. It depends on the willingness of the learner and how much you are willing to do. Todd is a special case. He is a very smart boy and understood what the buttons were and what they could do for him right away. Hr started using his buttons 10 minutes after he got them. This is not typical.

      The buttons were originally designed to help non-verbal people before being adapted for animals.

    Well, what I want to know, is, does Glamour talk as well? Also, I'm interested in the setup, and are you mapping by color as well as by say "type" or "relational concept" or is it just random. Also, you seem to permit loads of undulations in the perimeter of the board to permit Todd maximum reach and also, easy reach for words that might be likely to be used together?
    I have 3 cats varying in age AND size AND agility. I'd be fascinated to try this myself... one of my cats, by far the largest and also the youngest, was pretty successful feral when she was rescued. She'd like way more interaction than she's currently getting.... But, she's also just as inclined to lay her full 20 something pounds on it. How sturdy be those buttons!

    • @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks
      @TheChroniclesofToddToddTalks  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Glamour and Paulie do not use the buttons. I have offered and continue to offer it to them but they are not interested. I use the colors for myself, I don't know if Todd uses them that way. They are groups. Here is a link to a picture I used to set up Todd's board. how.theycantalk.org/c/discussion/order-of-introduction
      The undulations are to allow him to reach all the buttons but it is not for certain groups of buttons. This is just the best layout for Todd. The buttons are designed to be used by large dogs, they are sturdy.

      I didn’t get my cat buttons but I repeat words to reinforce and he understands what I’m saying or referring to. It didn’t take long. Maybe 4 -5 separate times I’d say “Outisde?” And open the door to backyard catio for my cat. Or when he wanted to go into the garage and wait by the door facing it, I’d say “garage?” And open the door for him. Or as I’m pouring water into his bowl and fountain I’d say “water.” Each time. He got what the words meant fast. If I get buttons, he’d be able to communicate back, which I plan to get later.

      He will get one eventually. Since mouth is a sub group of head I want him to learn all the other major parts first. He can tell me his mouth hurts by saying head but I would hate for him to not be able to tell me his leg hurts because we learned mouth before leg.

      We live where there is a large grove of trees backed up to our yard.
      One day we came home to our tuxedo injured with a huge gouge out of the base of his tail and the back of his head.
      We figured a hawk must have attempted to grab him and he managed to escape.
      Weve tried to keep him inside, but he was born feral so he got too colostraphobic.
      As a compromise, we only let him outside when we are out there with him.
      Never at night. Too many predators.
