You Wouldn't Believe Todd Could Do This If It Wasn't On Camera!

- I am home for the evening and made it upstairs. Todd joins me and says “Hello” to greet me. He asks for and receives his mousey (off camera). A little time has passed and he comes back to and finishes the last bites in his food mousey. He does an amazing double backfoot button press saying Want Todd(‘s) Mousey. I start to tell him no and he realizes he is not going to get it then says Jingle Ball with another backfoot button press. We finish the session with a good game of Jingle Ball.
Todd is a 6-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 51 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. I never get tired of watching Todd walk back with his jingle ball, he couldn't be prouder if he caught a mouse. You can't fool him with a fake one dad, so thankful he has a box full ready to be transformed into real jingle balls.

Yes. The True Jingle Ball must be the right colors, the right size, the right lattice pattern, and have a metal 4 tine Jingle in it, or it is an Orb of Sadness.

The funniest thing was when you picked up the orb of sadness. Todd just looked at you like, wait, what?! No no no. Then just sat there when you threw it. 😆

Besides that impressive double backfoot press, he also showed off some quick socker kicks with his jingle ball. Todd's kinesthetic intelligence is awesome!🐾
He has been doing a lot of good footwork with the Jingle Ball lately.
Just before Todd asked for his food mousey, he was repeatedly trying to get the last kibbles out of it--the clinking was audible--but each time nothing fell out. Maybe he was asking for help.

Todd is so smart as it's not just that he can use the buttons to communicate but before he does that he must be thinking that he needs to tell Dad things, then looks for the buttons to say it in Dad's language. If only Todd could design meow buttons for Dad! What would that sound like? I suspect it would be a beautiful symphony of sounds, and worthy of being recorded so us other kitty parents can learn it too.❤❤

Aww Todd is so clever and so cute! I love that he has very particular specifications for his jingle ball hehe. Maybe he is dropping it a bit further away from you so you can play with him when you have to "fetch" it.

We couldn’t see the slow blinks, but we could watch Todd taking his break when you say “Dad loves you” and the tip of his tail gives that little twitch of contentment!

Just like a kid, wanting MORE treats. LOL And Todd obviously knows a TRUE jingle ball both by sight AND sound. And I think Todd is dropping the jingle ball so far away because he wants you to work for it. hehe 😺 But he's such a sweetheart giving you kisses. And I try the slow blink with cats I know. 😊😸

Yes, you can also see his concern anytime I work on or around his board. He watches everything I do closely. I think he is afraid I will move buttons around, and he won't know where his words are anymore.

My cat slow blinks me back all the time 2 back foot button wow he's getting good with those buttons very impressive my affectionate cat Chatouille died a year ago she was affectionate like Todd liked to be cuddled be held I miss her so much and independent cat Camille is like your Glamour doesn't like to be picked up you need permission to pet her love to watch Todd do his stuff and surprises us with his new moves every time love it

I think Todd is messin' with you, as other cats seem to have top of mind with, cattitude! ( he is just so personality-perfect, you don't suspect him of those thoughts; but he is still feline!) If he can pull off double back foot presses, no mistakes; there is NO reason he can't perfect his soccer pass with the jingle ball so you don't have to crawl to get it! LOL Todd's tough to be critical of, but there you have it!

I still contend that it would be fun to try some experiments to see if we can reinforce additional connections between words. For example, Todd has shown some interest in kicking the jingle ball. Why not say "dad leg jingleball" and then kick it toward Todd. I bet he would love that, and maybe he might ask for it! Plus, if you see Todd doing this, you could try reinforcing the association with "Todd leg jingle ball."

I have seen plenty of video examples of cat's dexterity when walking - believe me, they step precisely where they want to, and do not like to step on things in their path - Todd did not accidentally step on those buttons with his back foot due to clumsiness, he stepped on them because he wanted to - He is such a smart boy! - ❤

Todd is a progressive thinker. Maybe he wants YOU to fetch the JB sometimes. Like he’s considering changing the game to make it more interesting or equitable. He seems to be able to handle complexity (especially if he’s in charge)! He may also realize that it’s good for human mobility to move and reach from a floor position. So he’s like, “C’mon Dad! We’re playing a game here!” 😺

Maybe he’s dropping it further away because he thinks maybe you would enjoy chasing it too 😅 I love when my kitty blinks back at me when I slow blink at him. I first learned about the slow blink from Cat Daddy that I then used on a feral cat who was hiding under my bed and it worked like a miracle, it shows them that you mean them no harm!

Todd is getting fancier and fancier with his button presses. His Jingle Ball snobbish behavior is so funny. Has he stopped kicking it to you ?
HE has not kicked it to me again in a while now so that may have been something he just tried out or an accident.

It intrigues me how sometimes he presses the buttons in quick succession (especially with the backfoot presses) and others leaves quite a gap. Then how sometimes he paws at the buttons until he applies just enough pressure and other times he presses them harder. I don’t for one moment think any of the presses are accidental…maybe it’s a reflection of his mood or how much he wants something
It is a mystery, and it may be like us at our speech and tone change with our mood.
It’s funny how he’s so particular about the jingle balls and isn’t at all ever fooled by the orbs of sadness! I really wonder what’s up with that particular preference about those balls and why that matters to him.
I would love to know, too. It has to be exact. The right colors, size, lattice pattern, and jingle or he won't touch it.

Also - after pressing Todd with his left foot, his next step is with that same foot to a space away from the buttons.
Yes, that is why I used that camera angle, you couldn't see that on any of the others. That shows he knows exactly what he is doing.
He's just trying a new move by dropping it before he gets to you 😹 A cat never doesn't mean to do what he does!
This is a game he invented so these are his rules. Lol

If you haven’t seperated them then find a diffrent colourd box or sutch and seperate them that way you know how meny jingleballs you have and that it is tru jingleball while also knowing how meny orbs of sadness you have to operate on
Dad just didn't look at it when I grabbed it. The true jingle balls have a glue patch on them when I preformed the bell-ectomy to insert an acceptable jingle bell. Lol
Todd is very much like an engineer.
He likes precision. His jingle ball must have the proper colors, the proper and the proper sound. It must be exact.
He knows his board in the same way, but has is physical body attuned to the placement of the buttons. You don't say that he is experimenting with his back feet button pushes, but he gets them right every time. Again he is being very precise.
It is fascinating to see what he is doing and try to figure out his motives and abilities. I suspect that if he pushed the wrong button more than once, he might be a bit upset with himself.
Todd is not happy go lucky. He plans.in his head before hand so that he gets it right the first time. This shows up in the toys he's invented. They work the first time!
Todd is an engineer!
I have never given him an oops button because you can tell right away. If he pushes a wrong button, he gets mad at himself, his ears go back and then he goes and mashes the correct button. He rarely makes a mistake, though.
