  • A slightly longer, but combined, video showing both assembly & painting of Airfix's 1/72 scale RAF Red Arrows Hawk Starter Kit in 2016 display scheme.
    Overall a great little kit offering the same level of exterior detail as many much more expensive kits from Airfix.
    As always, enjoy the video and please like, comment & subscribe as many more videos are on the way
    Thank you,

    Bring on the General!!! Best weapon ever, I was Sf platoon or the Machine gun Platoon, for best part of my career, a brilliant and reliable weapon in its own right and when coupled with the tri pod and c2 sight a real enemy stopper, should never have changed to 5.56, pea shooter springs to mind , SLR and GPMG should have remained the staple, for infantry at least, proper man stoppers, , long live the general, keep up the great channel sir love the content,

    I have this kit on its way to me, more or less to kill some time until I have a Cylon Raider delivered (build for a buddy). But I wasn't that confident in working on something at this scale. I'm a baby when it comes to the hobby (have only been at it for 9 months give or take)--this gives me some nice ideas with regards to tackling it. Thank you for the video.

  • @johnjones-ch5sh
    @johnjones-ch5sh 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    i note that your cokpit was slightly wider than the fuselage - as i found too. also, i had to fill the join between the canopy front and the nose.
    i 'finished' [still needs a touch here and there] mine using the humbrol 'red arrow' red and was very pleased with the colour which seemed to me a better finish than the humbrol gloss red.
    generally a nice kit i think. be aware that in the uk the red arrows versions [several markings finishes available] is in series 2 whilst the 'gloss black' trainer is in series 3.

  • @TheBornDrunk
    @TheBornDrunk 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    As for cockpit gauges and control panel. This is how you can make it look way much better:
    You need piece of plastic plate around 0.5mm thick, those are sold by tamiya or could be obtained from some plastic package. Then you cut to copy form of original cockpit plate to make it 1:1. Now you mark gauges and buttons as they placed on decal. Now you drill your plastic plate on the places where decal has gauges, buttons, etc. Now you apply decal on original plate as supposed by manufacturer. After that u can glue your drilled plate over decaled original one. This will give you some cool volume, give it a try,
    Regards

    The humbrol tutorial videos says not to use maskol with humbrol clear, but they don't say which way round, do you think that's why a little of the paint came off around the gear door when you peeled off the maskol?

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrIfixplanes I've never seemed go have a problem with the maskol. The only time I have is when the maskol has been completely covered by the paint and dried on hard. If you use it on dried clear, things should be okay and vise versa as long as the base coat os dry before hand

  • @vasili1207
    @vasili1207 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Throw that maskol in the bin copydex is much better cheaper and won't rip up paint , shame you didn't just make masks for the White decals 1 hour of prep would have saved you so much hassle with the fins decal alignment etc also red sprays lovely on white. I don't talk from experience painting models but painting and building cars full scale, only been doing the scale model stuff a year. Looks awsome none the less p.s the Orange peel is caused bye pressure to high for your clear coat

    on the underside the straight parts of

    I'm just getting into model building and I definitely like this kind of solid one colour gloss like paint. like on airliners or the reds. do you recommend biting the bullet and getting an airbrush?

    • @theinnernerd2603
      @theinnernerd2603 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes definitely! It is very difficult to create a nice smooth & even surface with a hand brush. I use a Sealey AB9321 which cost £30, not the greatest airbrush by far, but good enough to get results you see on my videos. Just remember to thin paints suitably to get the best outcome

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It may be because if water vapour yes, either in the air or in your airbrush's airline if you sprayed it with one. To get rid of it on your model you will have to wait for the paint to cure (around 1 day) and then sand it down smooth again

    I bought one of these a few months ago and didn't really care to much about it, but after i built it and finished it i really got attached to this kit, even if the left side decal was a bit torn after an incident with my cat. I think this kit deserves more attention, it really is very good and i recommend it to any modellers who are new the the hobby.

    • @JustAnotherThisDJ
      @JustAnotherThisDJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tim-Tam I've just started my first one but immediately realised it looks shot after painting the cockpit parts with the standard paints. I also damaged the chair stickers trying to get them to fit. What equipment would I need to be able to paint like in this video. I'm not continuing it until I get all the right kit;

    • @tim-tamsmith8802
      @tim-tamsmith8802 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      craigyb check23 Well, this kit is rather simple to paint, as it is basically just one colour for about 90% of the model. The key to modelling isn't the right equipment, you could make a beautiful, realistic model with a paintbrush and the right paints. The key is patience and truly raking your time, i used to rush my kits and they turned out terrible, but recently i've been taking hours and hours, delicately painting and gluing and sanding. If you are looking for a list of things and tips to help you with your models though, here you go:
      Masking Tape, get masking tape.
      If painting freehand, hold your painting hand with your other hand to help steady it.
      When painting cockpit canopies, use acrylic paint as it can be easily scratched off with a sharpened sprue or the edge of some tweezers.
      Get tweezers, they're more useful than you'd think.
      Try to paint absolutely everything when it's on the sprue, it makes life so much easier.
      If you're looking for paints and your hobby store doesn't sell humbrol ones (like mine) buy starter kits with different assortments of paints (there is a starter kit version of this kit)
      Have fun! Honestly you should enjoy making kits, and you don't have to do them exactly right, experiment, for example, i bought two 1:72 Hawker Hurricanes, painted one correctly and the other one i painted black and red, because, well, why not.
      You will figure things out as you gain more experience in the hobby, i would consider my current abilities as mid-tier. I'm not new, and bad, but i'm not very experienced and great. I can make a model that i am proud of, and that's probably the most important thing.

    • @JustAnotherThisDJ
      @JustAnotherThisDJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tim-Tam awesome mate. That's a great bit of advice. Much appreciated. I just ordered a set of modelling tweezers off eBay.

    • @JustAnotherThisDJ
      @JustAnotherThisDJ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What about paints? What do you use for a nice clear cover? I already figured out about keeping it on the spruce while painting haha. My cockpit looks crap though. Do you know what the starter set is called or who makes it? Oh and do you use anything to apply to the Paint before attaching the stickers? (Edit-sorry I just seen the bit about paints in your previous post).

    • @tim-tamsmith8802
      @tim-tamsmith8802 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      craigyb check23 The starter kit is by AirFix, it's on their website if you want to check it out. You can use decal solution (highly recommended) however it is not legal everywhere, so my method is just to get a tub of luke-warm water (about the same temperature you would have a bath in) and to hold them in the water for 10-15 seconds. Then, apply carefully and accurately, and use a brush to get rid of any air pockets. You can also apply water with the brush to the decal to flatten it out a bit. Then, once it has been left in place for a little while, get a tissue or paper towel and just dab it carefully to remove excess water. I usually press very hard so it conforms to the model, but this has a chance of damaging the decal so i don't recommend it.
      You should definitely watch Quick Kits videos, he makes very clear and great videos teaching you the basics of scale modelling, without the fancy gear haha.

      Hello. So my advice would be to pre-cut the decal before you add it to the water and then the model. Take a measurement so that you can split the decal in the correct place according to the airbrake position and you should be able to apply both pieces in the correct position and not spoil the decal. Hope this helps and good luck with the rest of your build! :)
