    Just got back into the hobby after a lay-off of some 30 Years! Your video's have been a priceless asset to me. A 'Go To' guide to get me started again. Nice build of 'John Spencers' Lightning F.Mk.6 - I must concur with someones comment that this variant did not have guns in the nose like the F.Mk.2A. Two 30mm Aden Canons sat in front of the ventral tank pack. Excellent work though... Keep the vids coming :-)

    Damn fine work! I like how random panels are a different color, avoiding a boring looking gray bird! The weathering looks quite realistic and I'm guessing this was a jet from a quick reaction squadron.

    as has been said no upper guns on a mk6 and LTF quite often flew with a fuel pack rather than guns. Just to add they only had one mk6, the rest were T5 and Mk 3.

    That is seriously neat and tidy work. Great paint finish, pre shading and decalling very well done.
    In terms of the Meteor I think the 111 Squadron looks has more interesting scheme. I like the contrast of the yellow tail with the camo pattern.

    One question did you have to put any weight
    in the nose to prevent tail sitting?

    I have got the decals for 56 Squadron and 111 Squadron, that's what I'm going build my Lightning's as. Oh and 111 Squadron did fly two F.6's if I remember right. We use to see them flying around Stowmarket all the time as Wattisham was just up the road.

    Tip to make your masking tape last longer: tear or cut it in half lengthwise.
    You then have two straight edges from same length of tape.

    Absolutely fantastic. Some great masking and painting. I have been looking for a tutorial like this for months. I have this model to build so you have given me some great tips as its about thirty two years since I last built a model, especially a Lightning (the best aircraft that ever flew). How much weight did you use in the front to prevent it from tail sitting?
    Thanks again for sharing and keep up the good work.

      I use a sealey AB9321 airbrush, nothing special cost me around £30. I run at 22psi for normal spraying, drop it down to 15psi for pre-shading for finer lines

    • @TheInnerNerd

      Thank you. Its a panel line wash I added to the whole airframe which dis-colours the paint slightly and emphasises the panel lines

      The MK6 had no upper guns,the guns were in a pack at the front of the ventral tank, LTF only had one MK6 the rest were MK T5 and a few MK 3.

  • @pesghino
    @pesghino 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    hi man, I'd like to ask you a couple of questions: I wasn't able to understand which color you're been using as postshading (letters covered by the wings colour background) and the one you used for the final touch (dark stripes along the rear and near the nose). Thanks Giuseppe from italy

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure when your are referring to in the video but for post shading I mix the lighter shades of the base colour with white and the darker shades black just to tone the original colour up or down slightly to get the variance. Thing these hevaily to get a smooth and faint line

  • @greg0uk
    @greg0uk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to ask but why do you spray the lines in the first bit? They just seem to get painted over. I'm not a model maker but enjoy these videos and was just wondering.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's called pre-shading to darken the area between the panels. I don't use this technique any more because it doesn't look very realistic compared to the real aircraft but many modellers prefer this method. Thanks for watching :)

    AWESOME ! Hey....got a quick story. and a question or 2.
    I'm 57 and when I was 25 I was the manager of a hobbyshop here in Lower Bucks Co,,PA. for 2.5 years.Back then I dabbled in plastic models but dropped that for RC Airplanes and haven't built another kit since.Back then I didn't have ANY bills / overhead so every paycheck I'd buy 1-5 models per week for 2.5 years. Needless to say I now have a shit load of unbuilt models in the original boxes..
    Most of the models are cars but I still have a lot of military jet aircraft. The cars don't do anything for me now but the aircraft models I'm getting the itch to start up all over again.
    I have to start from scratch cuz I have no air compressor airbrush, paints, tools or anything. All I have are the models.So I have a goal to start investing in the equipmentet and pick up where I left off over 30 years ago.. Ok that's that.
    The 1 question I have is this.
    Why do you pre- paint the body panel seams with black when your going to paint over it ? I'm assuming its for depth and shadowing effect .Depending on the color, I'm not sure you can even tell that you painted the seams after you put the regular coat over. I'm only going by what I see on my screen I never saw a model up close in personl that's been painted like that. #2 What are the "go to" paints no a days ?
    Testers, Tamiya, Humbrol ? One more question are there companies that sell aftermarket diecast landing gear for 172nd scale aircraft cuz I have a problem with my older models with the landing gear snap off cuz they're weak or the glue is dried out.
    Thanks, Howard H.

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Nice story and I wish you the best of luck in taking up scale modelling once more.
      The answers to your questions:
      The pre-shading technique is used to highlight/shadow the panel lines underneath the colour coat. The pre-shading is then covered with several layers of a thin mix of the colour coat. By making the colour coat thinner than regular the pre-shaded panel lines will show through slightly. The amount of layers or thinners can tune the depth that the pre-shading then had on the colour coat. Obviously the less layers or thinner pain will result in a heavier pre-shade presence and vice-versa.
      If you look at some of my later videos (particularly the MIG-31 Foxhound th-cam.com/video/7u7_eV6uoeY/w-d-xo.html) you will see that I now use a black basing technique which I prefer to pre-shading. The video will show this technique in full if you want to take a look.
      Go to paints for me are Mr Hobby Aqueous and Tamiya Acrylics. Both have great ranges especially Mr Hobby. Both have good pigmentation and easy to thin and clean etc. I would stay clear of Humbrol as I have had many problems with consistent airbrushing with those. Metal colours I would suggest Alclad II lacquers and for oils Abteilung 502 or Winsor & Newton. A full equipment list ca be seen at the bottom of my videos if you're unsure.
      Hope this helps! and good luck once again!

    What skill level is required for the spay gun? It looks pretty high

    • @TheInnerNerd
      @TheInnerNerd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The airbrush isn't too bad once you get the hang of the dual action. The key is to thin your paint enough to make it feed through the brush correctly, but not so much it starts to pool and become watery. I use a Sealy AB9321 which cost me £35 so it is very low-level compared to Iwata and others.
      I intend to do a tutorial video on how to set up and spray paint through an airbrush to help you guys out, but I always have a model on the go so I find it difficult to fit these small side videos in!
