I don't hate Gundam, which I hope is clear in the video, I just don't love it. To me, when all is said and done, it's a fine Manga. Not great, but fine
@@Daidarius thank you for the response. With all due respect, I have never met anyone who didn't enjoy the origin manga. For a lot of people they need to understand how manga flowed in that era and the intention was to give us the uncut version of Gundam we always wanted. The anime is very good but like this manga is a product of it's era and budget cuts. As a fan of Gundam for 30 years. This manga adaptation blew me away. The oil colors, music lyrics, and I had no issues with the suits or flow it is classic Gundam. 10/10 for me
Well regarding your argument of the flow of the manga reflecting the time it came out doesn't excuse the issues I have with it. Soul eater, One Piece, Jojo's and more came out in the same period, and they flow a lot better. Regarding the water colors, as I stated in the video, is downright masterfully done. I completely agree with you there. However, to me the most rewarding outcome of your comment is, that you as an old fan have brought to light, what this manga did for a franchise you apparently love, and ended up accomplishing for the future/legacy of the story as a whole. And that makes it all more worth it. So thank you for your comment, insight, and different view on this manga.
You can say what you want on Yasuhiko, but manga is all of his life... His first published manga is from 1979 (Arion), and he has published since more that 100 volumes, stacking all of his works. He is one of the OGs, using brush to draw his pages, without any storyboard, no assistant, basically freehand. He is praised by everyone in the medium, including Miura, Urasawa, Samura (you seem to think they are all hyping him up for nothing) ... The way he can convey the movement in few lines... His aquacolor mastery... Also, his narration, how he incorporates this "History" touch on the gundam story, building it as a myth (with all of the caveats). He is unmatched on that part. And he is still producing a manga call Inui to Tatsumi as of today, currently published in the same magazine as Vinland Saga... But I guess your sensibilities are not the same.
As a person who has only seen the OVA adaptation, I find his changes to the story to be inferior to Tomino’s vision. Char being another dude who was killed and identity stolen was silly, etc. But yeah it does seem weird how manga fans in the west seem to not get the old stuff.
The actual books don't hold up too well either. I bought a couple of these in 2016, but had them sit idle at my shelf up untill last year, but after giving these older books a first read, they ended up a bit saggy and the first couple of pages were prone to cracking near the spine... I stopped reading at volume 3 (just to take a break, not because I disliked them), but that ended up being a year. Went over them quickly last night up untill 1am, and now I'm finally continuing the story. Glad I'm not the only one having a hard time keeping up with the action scenes, thought it was just me, given I've always struggled with the few shonen books I've red...
man i'll say, the color pages look amazing. the black/grey pages are literally impossible to follow. either these things shouldve been completely colorized or completely re-drawn so you can tell whats going on.
I’ve heard people both speak very highly of the action sequences are say they are atrocious. It’s weird I’ve e ever seen someone with an opinion that’s between the two
I don't get the hate for Amuro Ray he was only 15 years old at the time and it felt like he had a dysfunctional upbringing also the Feds treated him like crap.
The only thing harder to follow than these panels is the enunciation of the presenter. I understand English is not your first language but that is even more of a reason to slow down and not end up mashing the words of your sentences together.
I'm sorry if you find me hard to understand. I haven’t gotten this feedback ever, so I'm curious to what regarding my pronunciation or accent makes it difficult to understand? It might be something I should work on
Great review man, I have only read the first omnibus and watched the first compilation movie and the omnibus is better than the movie. The thing that one writer said about One Piece really sucks, but I still want to keep reading the series since I like the robots xD and there really isn't much military scifi or space opera manga out there that I can get my hands on
Thanks. As a space opera, it does have its moments, and after the flashback, there are two distinct battles that should scratch that itch. And the focus on military and war tactics are interesting and for the most part we'll done, so if you like that, then you should definitely keep reading!
If you see what the Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino and what he said on One Piece, he does really love this manga, praising it everytime he talks about it, however he is much more critical on AoT.
@@VaviVove well to be fair Attack on Titan does feel like a Universal Century Gundam show, so I can see Tomino feeling weird that He’s watching his own show but more violent
anime is very outdated (and the movie compilations jumps so much between the events that it doesn't feel like a real movie), but my god, the origin is probably the worst depiction of that story. Yeah, anime was a repetitive slog, but at least it was true to it's themes (like trying to stay realistic in both character behaviour, mechanical things, military workings, etc). Origin throws that out of the window and turns everything up to eleven, like throwing mechs after mechs, or stupid fanservice and overall doesn't have much sense. I could rant about it all day
Well happy that I didn't miss the mark that much then. But even if the anime is outdated, is still good for its time/in is own right, or is it only holed in high regards, because it started Gundam?
@@Daidarius well, it's complicated. When it was released, it didn't have spectacular reviews and instead of planned 60 episodes they had to compress it into 45 (there was also parent company meddling to include more and more battles, new mechs, etc. to promote merch - all of that in the middle of production). It took few years after initial run to become cult classic, especially amongst adults who appreciated adult themes (like PTSD of the main protagonist). That's why it took almost a decade to produce a sequel and only after it the show really spread it's wings. Gundam isn't that watchable today, but tbh it wasnt bettor or worse than your typical mecha action from that time. That being said, it was unique for it's time, started entire new genre of "real robot" anime and because of that it deserves it's place in history. From today's perspective, it's one of the worst gundam series (IMO), but the really good ones from the late 80s and 90s more or less depend on it's story so it's worth to know it for better context of the events. That why I despise the Origin so much, because I feel like it takes the worst parts of the original story and makes them even worse (retcon character backstories into wrose, less belivable versions like in Char's case, throws even more battles with more and more absurd redesigned versions of the mechs, turns everything into fanservice'y "what if this and that meet at this point", etc). If you want to see some of the best gundam stories, watch 0080 war in the pocket. Is very different from your typical mecha anime, more personal and shows conflict from the perspective of the civilians. I didn't like it at first, because I hate bratty 7-year-old protagonists, but I was really moved by the ending. It also has just six episodes
I would say the original anime isn’t as outdated as One Piece or Black Clover which still Have not adapted to the modern anime landscape to produce better pacing. Like a bunch of anime is outdated, bur Gundam is not as outdated as anime being released today. Not to mention that the characters actually feel like actual people which is not common in anime
I don't understand your stance there. It does have a far mpre cynical take on Zeon Zum Daikun and Newtypes brought on by Yas's guilt that their newage paychobabble fed cults luke Aumshinrykyo.
"the origin" version of characters are very unlikable.... Amuro in TV and the trilogy are someone that you might be annoyed with him being a brat but can still empathy, but mannnn Amuro in "the origin" is a genuinely unlikable duchebag
ironically its his annoying resilience that actually makes me like him more, I was actually strongly turned off from mecha from all the stupid annoying mary sue characters, like evangelion or break blade, that just refuse to fight or are reluctant to fight etc. code geass seems to be an exception but i barely consider it a mecha since its like an after though. i found camile and amuro to be pretty interesting since very rarely do I ever see a protagonist that has anger management issues or outbursts, its very relatable to me.
