- Brands are spending tens of millions of dollars investing in the metaverse.
Gucci, Nike, Burberry and Walmart are just some of the companies buying up digital land as a way to promote their products.
Nearly $2bn has been spent in the past year on metaverse real estate, according to analysts.
But it’s not just big corporations turning to virtual reality: some artists and smaller businesses believe this new technology is the future of retail, and are making products which can only be sold within the metaverse.

sl is fine, its in decline like every mmo-like ever in existence. this is mostly because it is still only 2-threads and pre-2011-shaders, making it a very outdated engine that has grown too big to be upgraded to anything that utilizes modern gpus with tensor-cores for AI for noise-filtering for raytracing.

I just looked it up and apparently, it only has about 200,000 avg daily players. That's pretty tiny and it was from someone who was trying to claim how great SL still was.
CS:GO has 800,000 players right now, whereas SL has 33,500. The 25 most played games on Steam right now have more players on them than SL. Most of those games see much larger numbers over the course of a day.

Many years ago the exact same idea emerged. It was named second life and had a currency called Linden dollar. It was hyped in the media but failed anyway after some time. It was simply to boring. Metaverse may have better graphics but f.ex. Pacman is still Pacman even in 3D and will never take off. Probably this goes the same way.

as an active sl player, i dont know what are you talking about. SL is alive and thrives, and i wont even go into comparing graphics lol. SL is out of meta`s league. Its painful to watch this video actually. I wouldnt even install this crap or buy any clothing in it while everyone i know who plays sl absolutely love shopping and buying lindens

I'm not sure about the metaverse idea, I can think of some applications for maybe, storing information and exploring perhaps other planets, or some virtual worlds.
Not much more.

Also this isn't a young Vs old thing, this is an everyone thing. my grandparents use home delivery, Amazon, Netflix and social media.
My generation has just grown up with it so can use it better, than the generation that had to learn it.

The problem these designers and investors can't see is no one will come to their gallery or space, or buy their clothing if it's on an obscure piece of software that no one uses. There has to be a reason to go there. People spend money on in-game items in games they enjoy playing. People spent money on Second Life because it was unique, new and interesting to a generation that had never experienced something like that before. Until it wasn't interesting anymore. Now there are loads of knock-off Second Life clones and there are computer games that do the same kind of things a lot better.

A digital version of "the Emperor's new clothes".
Starting to sound very familiar, like when Second Life was a big thing. Advertising execs see tech demos and say "We have to invest" but having no idea which one will finally be adopted, invests in them all. The next Ad exec will see all the spending, call virtual advertising a waste of time and remove their ads. Then, a few years later, the next Ad exec will tout the benefits of virtual ad space again. And so the cycle continues of people trying to find the next "big thing".
Second Life's boom was between 2007~2009, Linden Labs partnered with companies from all over the world to make the Linden Dolar (L$) and other resources more accessible to a greater audience, problem is these "Partners" were advertising Second Life as a "Game" with no rules or age restrictions, consequently the program got filled with people stealing/cloning intellectual property, underages wondering into inappropriate places, other forms of theft and illegalities. After that the company took measures to greatly restrict and reduce these issues. It still is the best Metaverse out there.
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, knows digital from real. This is just as bad as everyone calling Millenials "Gen Z" all the time. Clearly you don't know, but we do.
Times have changed and now stock market is all about pump and dump leaving retailers as bag holders. Bag holders turned to long term investors will still bag hold and stock might go to zero. There is too much news, too many analysts, too many factors, too many firms, insiders influencing the stock price. Retailer money is being sucked. I made $172k combined net last year and paid no Federal taxes.
There are a lot of strategies to make tongue-wetting profit especially in this down market, but such sophisticated trades can only be carried out by proper market experts...
Agreed. I like this mentality. You can never time the bottom but if you're getting good value, take it and in the long term you'll be rewarded :) . Personally I’m always invested because the financial-market for me seem the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued ROI of over $200k since 2020 )but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!

If we lived deep underground after nuclear or climate devastation, I could see why people might want to do this. Or possibly someone totally paralysed could get something from it.
Why any fit person would not want to enjoy their short time in the real world, with all its beauty, is beyond me and quite sad.

I mean, you can work your ass off a whole day, take a beer with coworker right after, going out or following your hobbies in the weekend and still chat/play with friends a few times a week in VR chat. Most people are not leaving reality behind just because AR and VR exists.
But don't worry, if companies keep on betting on crypto over creating quality experiences it won't succeed anyway. Not until we reach yet another technological breakthrough at least.
What happens when VR becomes better than the real world? Now you understand why people will use VR everyday, just like a mobile phone. Using your logic, people would be in the real world instead of spending all their time on there phone, which most people do today with the average screen time being 6+ hours/day.
This is mainly for people who don’t actually have an excellent real-life lifestyle. People who can’t afford holidays, travel and others luxuries are limited to their 9 to 5 jobs etc., which is the majority of the population. People want a good life, even if it means being trapped in a VR headset on their heads. People who lead a remarkable life have no time for this S. apart from investing in it. To get them richer to carry on living the real good life. Sad but true.
Brands may be investing millions but my Oculus sit on the floor, in the corner here collecting dust. It was cool for about a month then, it got tiresome because unlike playing other video-games, where I can do multiple things at once, this thing forces You to be fully dedicated to it and that's not practical, or enjoyable for longer than like fifteen, twenty minutes at a time. So, they can invest millions but I as a customer fully divested from it.
I guarantee the metaverse is never going to get a visit from me. I'm enjoying the real world too much.

'millions' isn't acutally that much of an investment these days. This is like renting a stall at Disneyland. tbh, Disneyland would probably be a better investment because Disney has its own IP, and even if the metaverse is good, somebody else will build a better one in a decade or so

The issue will be the same as 3D TV and current VR games, nausea and headaches. You wouldn’t be able safely immerse unless you’re sat at home which cuts the user time down drastically compared to scrolling on a phone.

Just read Snow Crash to help understand ‘the metaverse’ but there’s not really much of the story set in the virtual world. It was a bit of a slog. Ready Player One is far better to get your head around this concept

I admit I haven't looked into metaverse that seriously, but it just seems like a new version of Second Life to me and I can't really see the big difference between them. (Other than the AR stuff and new technology used in it.)
Why would you buy land... It's all just a Unity scene you can make and publish yourself on leading platforms like ChilloutVR or VRChat... You drop your Blender scene onto Unity and make or take some assets and that's it. This is all rubbish. Brands would just get onto Blender and drop their own scenes on which ever app it is their targeting. Oh by the way, Metaverse is a multitude of applications, VRChat has been at it for years, it doesn't have to do with Facebook or what ever is that they are implying here. People don't "buy" land in the metaverse, you just compile your scene on Unity, in fact, people don't buy worlds, they buy asset packs from the Unity store, you can buy that, but not worlds, it doesn't make sense.
