RIP Dame Maggie Smith. I will always remember how she decided to keep filming the movies because she loved her fans despite how painful and exhausting it was. Another legend gone 😢 ❤
Yeah she filmed when she was having cancer treatment, and we see how gaunt she looks in the sixth film. Mind you that wouldn't stop her. She once didn't turn up to accept one of her Oscar's, as it clashed with a theatrical performance she was on. Legend.
If anyone’s interested, Harry’s family money comes from his grandfather Fleamont who invented Sleekeazy's Hair Potion; basically Harry is the heir to a wizarding cosmetics fortune 😅
Also ironic as its always stated in the book, how uncontrollable his hair actually is. Guess it runs in the family, and one of his ancestors decided to do something about it. The Potters are also one of the oldest surviving wizard lines, so would probably have a bit of old money anyway; though thats not always the case as the Weasley's are skint and are also an ancient line. Harry's fortune is also boosted greatly later, but thats for another time.
@@LiteWeightReacting also one of his older ancestors, who started the family fascination with potions, was Linfred of Stinchcombe. He invented the Skele-Gro potion that Harry has to take in Chamber of Secrets because of Lockhart vanishing the bones in his arm. So if it wasn't for him, Harry would have been in a pretty terrible spot 😂
As someone who’s doesn’t read the books, I like how you’re giving us the lore on the books. I’ve tried reading the books a few times, but I always get confused on some parts
42:06 To be fair, Teagan. They'd originally intended to have Emma Watson wearing the prosthetic teeth to make her more like how Hermione looked in the books, but it affected her ability to speak the lines so much, they'd forgone having Emma wearing a set of prosthetic teeth Also, they'd intended to have Daniel Radcliffe wearing contact lenses to turn his eyes green, but they'd irritated his eyes so much they'd went without him wearing the contact lenses
This definitely hits very differently, even moreso nowadays, since Dame Maggie Smith passed R.I.P.: Maggie Smith Robbie Coltrane Richard Harris John Hurt Richard Griffiths Allen Rickman
I know people who never watch a movie\show more than once. However, it's as you pointed out... You can catch things when watching then again or things have such different meaning at different points in your life that it's more impactful. Thanks for your re-watch reaction! 🙂 And as everyone has said, RIP Maggie Smith.
The way the kids handled the situation seems largely believable. I was always put off by how Hagrid handled things as a marginally responsible adult. Like letting pieces of secrets slip sure, but when the three of them show up and straight up admit they are investigating Nicholas Flamel and the philosopher's stone he should have gone straight to Dumbledore. Though the scarier conclusion is Hagrid did the responsible thing went to Dumbledore and Dumbledore then proceeded to prod these 11 year old children into finding the mole in his staff and fighting the spectral remnants of the darkest wizard in hundreds of years. Plot armor is a great excuse, but a more believable explanation is that a sociopathic ancient wizard was pulling the strings and using the kids and stone as bait to try and lure out and dispose of his last great foe. From this perspective the Harry Potter books make a lot more sense and take on a much more sinister tone. All of them basically read like the half blood Prince and deathly hollows from this angle. Be well
Really enjoyed it. Can definitely tell you were a teacher, you express yourself so well. You are certainly someone who is going to enjoy, and benefit from, the tv adaptation that is coming, as it's intended to be more faithful to the books. And just think, you get to read the books and watch the movies with your daughter in years to come. How special that's going to be.
@@LiteWeightReacting There is a hilarious bit in the extended cut where Harry's Hogwarts letters are in a box of eggs, and Aunt Petunia goes ballistic when she's cracking them! I can't remember if that is in the book tbh though.
The real reason why Dumbledore left Harry to the Dursleys is because Lily’s sacrificial protection would on as long as he lives with his Aunt Petunia who shares her sister’s blood. There he must stay with his aunt until he has come of age in the Wizarding World which is 17.
@@LiteWeightReacting Yeah "as long as he can still call home the place where his mother's blood lies" or something to that degree. It's been year but I used to run a Harry Potter podcast so all of this stuff is seared into my brain. xD

Yeah, and since she watched this after having read the corresponding book, I also appreciated her not being one of those jackasses we’ve all seen in comments just shitting on the movies and generally being insufferable. I pretty much knew she’d be cool about it, but it’s still nice to see. (I’ve been subscribed to her gaming channel for a couple years or so and have thoroughly enjoyed several of her let’s plays, so I know the kind of person I’m dealing with on this channel as well. Incidentally, Teagan/Lite here is one of precious few people I would actually trust to do playthroughs of some of my most cherished games and do them the justice I think they deserve. This is saying something, considering the absolutely ridiculous amount of people I’m subscribed to and have watched over the years. Safe to say I trust her to be civil.) So many people are way too uptight. I get that these movies tend to be a bit weaker than the books overall-which is typical, as books have a hell of a lot more room to work-but these are still extremely solid movies regardless. (Granted, I’m also coming from a perspective of having seen all the movies before reading the books-the latter of which I still need to do sometime-but I’m also typically pretty good about appreciating things for what they are. (Unless something is so outstandingly bad that even I can’t ignore it, and/or it’s trying to force an agenda down my throat.)
@@slothkng Heh heh. Dude, you have no idea how accurate that statement was for me. Your commentary on the differences from the book, especially the character portrayals, was really interesting. It's been 20 years since I read it and, apparently, I've forgotten things as my memories have been overwritten by the movie and sequels. My favorite Maggie Smith moment of the movie is her delivery of the line "sheer dumb luck" because she sounds exactly like Lady Kluck from Disney's Robin Hood.
Here is how I view the Sacrifice Charm of Lily Potter -- it wasn't just that she loved Harry and died for him, as that would have applied to his father, Sirius, etc as well. It was the fact that Voldemort gave her a chance to walk away and she choice to stand between them.
@@craignellist7277 They dumbed it down for American's because they didn't think most of them would know what a philosopher was - which is a pretty sad reflection of the US education system.
There's a blue ray edition, I believe, with the cut out scenes left in. Wonderful! About Ron bringing a pet rat, I believe Fred's and George's best friend Lee Jordan brought a huge hairy spider. (A tarantel? Can't remember..) Let's just acknowledge, I would never share bedroom with a huge hairy spider! 🕷️
To the people who read the books first, when they finally get to that scene where Hagrid opens up the portal into diagon Alley is the moment where we all knew that these movies were actually going to be magic!❤(Speaking for myself, they got almost all the characters spot on and I prefer the Dumbledore in the first 2 movies)
Ya can't go wrong with the Potter Movies or Books. And you DEFINITELY showed that. I have seen you like/LOVE other movies before. But you haven't looked so, so GIDDY before. EVER. And that made this Post even better. Thank you for sharing that with us. Hoping to see that again. 👍👍
I only ever read the Chamber of secrets book but I think the movies are a close 2nd to being so good I love these films would love to see you do the rest ^^
42:21 It's because the producers, writers and directors were obsessed with Emma Watson and the character of Hermione so made other characters look worse to make her look better and even giving her lines other characters had in the books. Hence film Ron becoming comic relief who just exists to be hungry, fear spiders and say "bloody hell."
The part where Ron of all people hits himself in the face with a broom at his first flying lesson in the movie. As if he hasn't been using his brother's brooms before he got to school. Like these kids are flying before they are old enough to walk. I think the fight where Neville tries to take on Crabbe and Goyle single handed is such an important aspect of his character development and leads into him standing up to Harry, Ron and Hermione. It also shows us a glimpse of the fact his parents fighting spirit is present. There are some weird character assassination elements in these films compared to the characters in the books and it isn't just because it is a movie adaptation. It's also interesting that the spell Ron tries on Scabbers doesn't work and that shakes his confidence but it's possible it would have worked on a real rat and not an animagus pretending to be a rat. As you said, these movies hold for posterity the performances of those who are gone but not forgotten.
Just finished your reaction. John Williams' score is wonderful and peaks with the third film, which is my favorite of his scores in the franchise. As to Harry Potter, we were lucky as parents to have our girls growing up with the books. Our four daughters all love the books and the films. As they got older, we went to a midnight book sale for Order of the Phoenix and a midnight showing of The Half-Blood Prince. We all have Harry Potter movie marathons at least once a year where we start with the first film and go all the way through the final installment over the course of a few days. While the films have to strip down the books to their essence, they hold up and it's phenomenal to see them hold the bulk of the cast together for all the movies. We are now super excited to see what happens on MAX with their ability to spend more time on seasonal episodes and include more content from each book. I look forward to you completing the whole series and hope you do!
Reading the books doesn't always do that. "The Lord of the Rings", for example, I find that as long as you watch the Extended version, it is the perfect movie. I don't wish that they did anything different. Some would. I don't, though I do come at it from a different perspective. Though not quite a cinephile, I do take the perspective that a reader of books has a different temperament than that of a movie watcher. You have to play to each of the desires to make an effective piece of entertainment. This is why, even when someone who isn't a book reader, watches the Extended versions, while they complain about the first movie being 3 hours and 48 minutes, but EVERY single time they reach the end it's always something to the effect of "That's it?! How can it be over?!" Jackson made a perfect film for movie goers. When you know your audience, you can do that. Which is why the Hobbit didn't do as well. MGM didn't know their audience. They didn't understand why Jackson only wanted to do 2 movies and forced him to do 3.
I remember watching the first movie and falling asleep to it. Never understood what was the hype. Friend of mine told me to read the books, which I did. I loved it so much! Then started watching the movies and realized how great they were!
That version of the movie occasionally streams on the app Peacock but I don’t think it is on the app at this moment. The app Max largely only carries the theatrical versions of the movies.
I have only watched the movies. I wax an adult when the books were written and the movies subsequently made. So I’ve never been as into the lore and in depth as other fans are. ( like I was with Star Wars growing up). But when I stepped onto Diagon Alley at Universal in Florida I was blown away. I walked into that story. I now have the book box set and will start to read them …. If I have time.
I basically _never_ watch re-watch reactions but i'm glad I made an exception, this was a delight :). (and having never seen the US version it hadn't occurred to me that they'd ADR the lines where they say "Philosopher's Stone" but _of course_ they did, it'd make no sense otherwise. Still weird though :)
I'm so glad you read the books before re-watching. You are spot on re: the diminishing of Ron's character in favor of Hermione. I will subscribe to keep following your reactions for this reason alone. IBTW: There is an extended version of this movie as well as others.
I enjoyed your reaction. Just imagine if they were able to have Peeves in the movies lol. I remember when this movie first came out. I diddn't know anything about Harry Potter. I had heard some people Talking about the Harry Potter book and how they were looking forward to seeing the movie when it came out. What got me really curious about Harry Potter is the movie trailers for the first movie which showed me that the story is a fantasy dealing with magic, magical creatures, and a lot of the things I really like in stories. I didn't get into the books until after I saw the second movie. Then it was driving me crazy waiting for the next movies and for the next books to come out. I like the movies a lot and I love the books. I totally understand that they can only fit so much into the movies but book 5 (the Order of the Phoenix) is the longest book yet it's the shortest movie.
You're actually right that there is technically an extended edition, but it's just all the deleted scenes weaved into the film, so I understand why it's not shoved into our faces like other extended editions. They did the same with Chamber of Secrets, but personally they're not necessary to watch as they don't add much to the main story. I also find it interesting that for this film, they reshot scenes where the characters say "Sorcerer's Stone" and instead say "Philosopher's Stone" outside US releases. Little off-putting, but still interesting to learn.
Rest in peace Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman, Richard Harris, Richard Griffiths, John Hurt SO MANY phenomenal actor/actresses in this series, too many who aren’t with us anymore :(
I think you did a fantastic job. These HP movies are also a favorite part of my household, and even though I'm over 60, these are still a great watch and a wonderful trip down magical memory lane. It's sometimes sad seeing how many of the characters are no longer with us. Rest In Peace to all of them who filled our hearts and made our imaginations soar.
You're not going mad LW, there is indeed an extended version, it's on the ultimate edition Blu-ray. Such a fun reaction, looking forward to the rest of the series. Happy Halloween 🎃👻🕸🕷 RIP Dame Maggie Smith, John Hurt, Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris and Alan Rickman.
20:23 same with my gf at the time. she was obsessed with OIiver Wood, and then Chamber came out, and she was all about Cedric. What can you do? Wild how many people have died from these movies...Shame we never got to see Richard Harris as Dumbledore all the way through. He was EXACTLY how I imagined him when I read the books as a kid.
Thanks, I enjoyed your take on seeing Harry Potter 1 again after reading the book. For me it is similar with Lord of the Rings, because I had been reading the books for decades since I was a kid when the movies came out, starting in 2001. Thank goodness for the Extended Edition of those movies in terms of story continuity and character development... RIP Maggie Smith - thanks for honouring her, and also Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, John Hurt, etc. So many great British mature actors and actresses in this series, and sadly we have lost a number of them since! For another fine Maggie Smith movie, that also stars Helena Bonham Carter (and Judi Dench), please check out the movie adaptation of A Room With A View (1985).
Your love for the story, both book and movie, comes through and makes this one of my favorite reactions of all. Your enthusiasmis infectious. I've long thought that Rowling missed the opportunity wth Ron to be the FOIL to Hermione. Ron could have been the character who ACTS immediately without thinking while Hermione could have been the opposite character who THINKS without acting. As a rule, this could have permeated the entire series to the point where, as we fall into the storyline, we start to know the characters so well we can PREDICT there temperament. ANd, the could have pushed the limits of this to have some scenes where Hermione becomes a liability by being paralyzed with indecision and others where Ron becomes a liability for acting without thinking. They could have then established Harry as a distinct, and not even midline character: the heart. Ron would be the primal id (anger, rage, love, heartache, impulse) , Hermione would be the brains, and Harry would be the heart of the team. A good example of this would be The GOdfather, where you can so CLEARLY predict a character's reaction to any given scene as it unfolds.
Fellow Ravenclaw here, that's always been my favortite house and I was so happy when I got sorted into that house 😏. RIP to Dame Maggie Smith, such a talent. She was awesome as professor Mcgonagall. Her and Snape were my favorite professors throughout the whole franchise, both legends! P.S. Love your reactions 🎃
in the Philosopher stone version of the movie they have more of the mail scene, however in order to save time and money they had to cut a lot of the book scenes again in the Philosopher stone they have harry and Hagrid in the London underground.
This was very fun. Yes I think you did this reaction "correctly" don't change a thing. I was a grown man when these movies started coming out but still there is a certain nostalgia even for me. watching you quote the movie was very fun. I can not express how much fun it was for me to find out that Ollivander's first name is Garrick, same as mine. 🧙♂ See you next movie.
You're correct. By my count, at least 20 of the cast have passed on, including both Dumbledores, Hagrid, Prof Snape, Tom the bartender, Vernon Dursley, etc.
Being that we're in the month of October, I thought I'd give you a film to react to that most have not, much to their detriment. The film is called "Flatliners" and was released in 1990 with an all-star cast. Another film that fits well into October is "Jacob's Ladder", also released in 1990. This way you'll have content that other reactors haven't done. I'm glad you rewatched this film after reading the book. I hope the rest of them live up to your expectations. Take care and keep smiling.
They did such a great film but I'd still loved to have Peeves in it. I can understand why he was cut but that explains why they changed Ron's character to make him more comedic. And Rik Mayall was perfect casting for Peeves. Maybe they were worried that the design could come out too similar to Gollum.
Wanna feel even older? Daniel Radcliffe(Harry), Bonnie Wright(Ginny), and Rupert Grint(Ron) have all had their first kid in the last few years. Also RIP to Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, and all of the other actors involved with this iconic franchise who have passed on in the years since.
i have to confess that I have never seen any Harry Potter movie or read any of the books. This reaction is the first time ive actually seen this movie even though not in its entirety.
11:53 One of my old bosses was like that. Instead of filing cabinets, all the paperwork was stacked in piles around his massive office. On tables, desks, on the floor, just anywhere you could stack papers. Total chaos. Ask him where a job for X company was on Oct. 12th, 1998 and he'll walk over to a stack, think for a minute, finger through few pages an lift up the stack and pull out the exact order. I tried so hard to find a pattern. Never could.
If i can recommend a movie for you to react to, i would like to recommend "Airplane!" (1980), which in my humble opinion is the funniest movie ever made. And i don't know if you've seen them already but I'd be interested to see your reaction to The godfather trilogy. Part 3 is not as bad as everybody says it is :)
Imagine you are at Gringotts for secret important business, tell them "Vault you know which" and the goblin in front of you just says "my name is not Vault and I know several witches, who do you want to speak to?"
When watching the first Harry Potter film, it's important to remember that they didn't know if it was going to be successful. The books were very popular, but they didn't yet know if it would work on film for a wider audience. So they had to change the characters to fit for an audience who never read the books.
These movies are iconic. It's active fitting you're watching these now. We just lost Maggie Smith, who played McGonagall. As well as unfortunately many others of the cast

You’ll find as you keep reading that a lot of Ron’s lines or even other characters lines are given to Hermione. Movie two is a great example of this.
I kept falling asleep watching Chamber of Secrets. Such a dull movie.
As someone who’s doesn’t read the books, I like how you’re giving us the lore on the books. I’ve tried reading the books a few times, but I always get confused on some parts
So glad you are reading the books! They are wonderful. 🤓
42:06
To be fair, Teagan. They'd originally intended to have Emma Watson wearing the prosthetic teeth to make her more like how Hermione looked in the books, but it affected her ability to speak the lines so much, they'd forgone having Emma wearing a set of prosthetic teeth
Also, they'd intended to have Daniel Radcliffe wearing contact lenses to turn his eyes green, but they'd irritated his eyes so much they'd went without him wearing the contact lenses
Oh that’s really cool! Thanks for sharing that!
This definitely hits very differently, even moreso nowadays, since Dame Maggie Smith passed
R.I.P.:
Maggie Smith
Robbie Coltrane
Richard Harris
John Hurt

RIP to all the legends!!
I know people who never watch a movie\show more than once. However, it's as you pointed out... You can catch things when watching then again or things have such different meaning at different points in your life that it's more impactful. Thanks for your re-watch reaction! 🙂 And as everyone has said, RIP Maggie Smith.
Thank you Eric! And RIp Maggie!!
Be well
Rest In Peace Maggie Smith
RIP! She will be missed. She was perfect for this role!

" I Love His Little Clap-Back, I Wished They'd Kept That In The Movie"
They did keep it in the Extended Cut, Teagan
Dang it haha
@@LiteWeightReacting Make sure you find the extended version of Chamber of Secrets
@@LiteWeightReacting There is a hilarious bit in the extended cut where Harry's Hogwarts letters are in a box of eggs, and Aunt Petunia goes ballistic when she's cracking them! I can't remember if that is in the book tbh though.
Thank you, Karl.

Well thank you so much!!
These movies are the treasure of modern cinematography. All actors that passed away will live forever..
ooh a fellow ravenclaw!! 😁🫶🏼
The real reason why Dumbledore left Harry to the Dursleys is because Lily’s sacrificial protection would on as long as he lives with his Aunt Petunia who shares her sister’s blood. There he must stay with his aunt until he has come of age in the Wizarding World which is 17.
Amazing catch!
Looking forward for you continuing the franchise!😊

Not to mention that memory you shared about you and your dad was so wholesome ❤️
Sorry for the ramble. I do that a lot.

My favorite Maggie Smith moment of the movie is her delivery of the line "sheer dumb luck" because she sounds exactly like Lady Kluck from Disney's Robin Hood.
Agree 100% with your view on Movie Ron and Movie Hermione. 👌
Hey great reaction, this was a top movie.
Greetings from Sydney Australia.
Here is how I view the Sacrifice Charm of Lily Potter -- it wasn't just that she loved Harry and died for him, as that would have applied to his father, Sirius, etc as well. It was the fact that Voldemort gave her a chance to walk away and she choice to stand between them.
I like to drink a toast to all the actors that have passed as I watch all the older movies some of these now you can get pretty ripped .
Awesome! Well said!!

Perfect time of year for it!
Fun fact! John hurt, the wandmaker, was Kane in Alien (1979).
RIP Professor McGonagall, RIP Rubis Hagrid, RIP Professor Snape, RIP both Albus Dumbledore RIP Narcissa Malfoy.
I would recommend watching the movies BEFORE reading the books! Also, RIP Professor McGonagall!
There is an "Extended Cut" that last 2h38m instead of 2h32m.
I missed out! Dang it!
That version of the movie occasionally streams on the app Peacock but I don’t think it is on the app at this moment. The app Max largely only carries the theatrical versions of the movies.
Ayyyee, a fellow Ravenclaw! Great video, as always. ^_^
As a Brit... can we just all agree to call it the Philosophers Stone and live happily ever after 😉
🤣🤣🤣
As not-a-Brit... I concur that it is the better name.
Call what the Philiospher's Stone, the Sorceror's Stone? lol
as a very patriotic Murican, i agree, its stupid that they changed in the first place.
Why would we call the Sorcerer's Stone the Philosopher's Stone???
IBTW: There is an extended version of this movie as well as others.
enjoyed watching your reaction 👍☺
R.I.P. Dame Maggie Smith! She was my absolute favorite on Downton Abbey…. Goodnight, Lady Grantham. 😞
RIP!
Rest in peace Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman, Richard Harris, Richard Griffiths, John Hurt

I love how the Mirror of Erised is really just desire spelled backwards.
lets goooo finally you onto harry potter !!!
Ryan George does a great pitch meeting for this movie. 🤣🤣

She a legend in every way she'll be missed
If i can recommend a movie for you to react to, i would like to recommend "Airplane!" (1980), which in my humble opinion is the funniest movie ever made.
And i don't know if you've seen them already but I'd be interested to see your reaction to The godfather trilogy. Part 3 is not as bad as everybody says it is :)
I haven’t seen the Godfather or Airplane! Thanks for suggesting them!
Congratulations on 100k sub on your gaming chanel 🎉
These movies are iconic. It's active fitting you're watching these now. We just lost Maggie Smith, who played McGonagall. As well as unfortunately many others of the cast
