  • Time to embark on the Harry Potter journey!
    Badd Medicine here and its Harry Potter reaction time! This was voted on by our Patreons! Just beat out the Hobbit movies as we just completed the Lord of the Rings. Now we get to see what Harry Potter is all about. And gotta say, this first one was very kid friendly more so than adult. Which is good to see. We have heard it does get darker as they go on which we are looking forward to. Harry Potter the character is an interesting one. Fun to see he had no clue of what his potential was and then boom! He took off like you would expect him to with his quick learnings. Crazy to see how young everyone is here in the first Harry Potter. A lot of people have mentioned to check out the Harry Potter Books. So we may have to after these movie reactions are completed.

    Fun fact: common misconception is that if you catch the snitch you WIN. But catching the snitch just ENDS the game and is worth 150 points. But if you catch the snitch and the other team still has more points than you with the +150 then THEY win.

    • @theshadowfax239
      @theshadowfax239 2 ปีที่แล้ว +920

      I blame that stupid line they gave Oliver Wood for all the confusion. I can't for the life of me figure out why they would have him say 'if you catch this we win'. While normally catching the snitch and getting that many points means you will probably win, it is definitely not an absolute.

      I mean, it’s still basically an “I win” button in most situations. Given how scoring works in quidditch, you’d have to be playing abysmally (like Germany 7, Brazil 1 abysmally, or even worse) to lose the game despite having caught the snitch. I know that this happened to Krum and the Bulgarian team in GoF, but that just makes me wonder how his team ever got into the finals, or whether the Irish are just leagues better than any quidditch team in the world. If the snitch instead was worth somewhere in the ballpark of 50-100 points, that I could understand.

    • @resathe6760
      @resathe6760 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@jordinagel1184 I get what you mean but you also brought on the best real life example why it wasn't that farfetched that Krum caught the snitch and ended the game. Yes, Quidditch has no time limit (which is probably the most stupid rule of the game) but like with the Germany-Brazil game sometimes one team is just that much better or the other team has just an abysmally bad day. And that was the semi-final of a world cup as well. All in all Rowling didn't totally think the rules through for Quidditch

    About Ron Weasley and what he saw in the mirror, since that won't get 'explained' until further in the series... he's the second-youngest child of 7, and the youngest boy. His oldest brother is basically Indiana Jones/Lara Croft. Another brother works handling dragons. The third one is the smartest, think straight A student. I think all of them were really good at school. And the twins are smart in their own way and know how to get attention and being well-liked despite (or because) of their pranking nature. His little sister is also the only girl (and youngest kid) in the family. So it's less about superficial wishes as him wanting to stand out, too, and being acknowledged. It's a big part of his character in the series. He's basically very insecure about him being the least important child.

      @@ruud9761 Yes, it was revealed to him very young (probably teasing from 1 of the older brothers) that he literally wouldn't have been born if the parents weren't trying for a girl, since the parents were more than happy with 5 kids, it's just none had been girls. If his mom hadn't dreamed of having a daughter to do girly things with so strongly they would've stopped at 5. And then when you see that the sister is only 1 year younger, it's obvious they immediately got pregnant again, trying for a girl again. Poor Ron felt that he was literally the unwanted child! Because he was just average at everything when the older boys were standouts & his sister was the baby plus only girl & got all that attention, he was never made to feel special & instead was always just part of the crowd. He was only just "one of the Weasleys".

    In the books, the Sorting Hat sings a new song every year - this is one of them that pretty much explains hogwarts and the sorting:
    “A thousand years or more ago
    When I was newly sewn,
    There lived four wizards of renown,
    Whose names are still well known:
    Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
    Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
    Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
    Shrewd Slytherin, from fen.
    They shared a wish, a hope, a dream,
    They hatched a daring plan
    To educate young sorcerers
    Thus Hogwarts School began.
    Now each of these four founders
    Formed their own house, for each
    Did value different virtues
    In the ones they had to teach.
    By Gryffindor, the bravest were
    Prized far beyond the rest;
    For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
    Would always be the best;
    For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
    Most worthy of admission;
    And power-hungry Slytherin
    Loved those of great ambition.
    While still alive they did divide
    Their favourites from the throng,
    Yet how to pick the worthy ones
    When they were dead and gone?
    Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
    He whipped me off his head
    The founders put some brains in me
    So I could choose instead!
    Now slip me snug about your ears,
    I've never yet been wrong,
    I'll have a look inside your mind
    And tell where you belong!”

    The first thing Snape asks Harry is “Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?” According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning ‘My regrets follow you to the grave’ and wormwood means ‘absence’ and also typically symbolised bitter sorrow. If you combined that, it meant ‘I bitterly regret Lily’s death’.

I think the fact that they opened 3 hours earlier made the lines shorter. Still, I remember how crowded it got inside the bookstore and people making a mad dash for the shelves. Fortunately, I just went to the reservation counter to pick up my book. There was a line there, too but not as long since people could pick them up anytime. How nostalgic!

    One thing that has bothered me about how they did quidditch in the movie is they say they win if the seeker catches the snitch. My dad was the same way when the books came out. He's a huge fantasy guy but wasn't going to read them because they were kids books. This was before any of the movies came out so only a few of the books were out. He made fun of his friend reading them. Then my cousin was having trouble reading, has dyslexia, and so my dad was like okay we'll read them together. We'll read up to a certain point by a certain day and talk about it. Then he got to the part where the letters flooded the house and he was hooked. He took off and left my cousin in the dust. Then when he was getting to the end of the first book and the characters were pointing out 'clues' from earlier, my dad was like no way. I would've caught that. And then looked back and was like it's really all there for you to try to figure out. He now reads them every year. He was at the midnight release of the 7th book. He had to get two copies for him and my mom because they couldn't wait for the other to finish it first. Apparently they stayed up into the early hours of the morning to read it. My cousin never finished the first book.
    The snitch is worth 150 points if you catch it. Catching it ends the game. In most cases it means your team wins but if the other team is ahead enough you might not win even if you do catch it. Like I said though, most times you do win.
    I think you'll guys like it more as the series goes on. There are many people who watch this for the first time and don't really like the first movie because it is a kids movie and then after they watch all of them have a new outlook on the first. I think you'll guys like the second movie but I think once you hit the third one you'll all just love the movies as you continue.

    Great reaction, guys! I'm looking forward to watching you go through the rest of this series. ^_^
    One thing to keep in mind about the movies versus the books is that, because of the nature of what can be allowed in film compared with writing, especially in something geared toward children and involving children, is that the books tend to be more brutal, graphic, hardcore, etc. than what you end up seeing in the movies. As an example, in this movie, when Ron sacrifices himself in the chess game, the queen explodes the horse he's on and he just kind of falls off and gets hit with a little debris. In the book, he is just walking on his own (no horse), so when the queen attacks him, she bashes him across the head, severely injuring him and knocking him unconscious. I'm guessing, for a kids' movie, the makers didn't want (or just plain couldn't) show that level of brutality against a child.

    About the moving stairs....I think what first time watchers always forget/miss is that these are not normal children. They are young witches and wizards and are there to learn to expand and control their powers. Things that would be crazy in a school with normal children are nothing more than challenges for the children at Hogwarts to learn how to master the unusual. In learning to think and deal with the unexpected, they grow into their powers. I'm enjoyed your reactions and yes, the books get darker and darker. One of the brilliant ideas that J K Rowling came up with is that the books increase in vocabulary and complexity with each book. So, you can give a child the first book to read and it hooks them into the world so as they progress from book to book, they also increase their own reading and comprehension skills. Also, JK Rowling was not finished writing the books when this movie was filmed but she had already revealed how many books would be in the series. Four of the seven books were already out. JK Rowling did know the entire arch of the series and it's been said that she talked to Alan Rickman and told him a bit about his character's development when he expressed doubts about playing Snape. Btw....I love that you call him Hans. Love Die Hard, too so it makes sense to me.

    For a little clarification during the wizard chess scene, in the books Ron is not on a horse.The actual piece move off and the trio take their place. So when he gets hit, he actually takes the blow. But the director thought the horse looked cool, it just still doesn't work because Ron looks like he decided not to get out of the way.. So it's a question that almost every you are asked

    • @MGower4465
      @MGower4465 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think there's reason behind Ron being on the horse - he could see the board from there. Given the size of the pieces, an 11 year old at floor level would have trouble seeing the positions of all the pieces, and this wasn't a time to rely on memory. This is one of the changes from the book that make sense from a standpoint other than cost cutting. In my opinion.
      Once his piece was on the board and moving, Ron would not be able to simply leap off, because he would be adding a piece, himself, to the board, and likely forfeit the game for a rules breach.

I think that's a huge reason family members tend to end up in the same house, but not always. Take the Weaslys for example. Due to their ambitious nature, Percy, Fred, and George would have definitly ended up in Slytherin. But being raised in a family that prioritises bravery and courage, all the kids ended up in Griffindor.

There is a lot left out that any novel reader will fill in automatically when watching these movies with even more left out in later ones. There is an item in the last two movies which is not explained at all, just Harry suddenly has it, that is well explained in earlier books. A friend in his 80s read the series while in rehab, knowing that I was a big fan of the series, and his response after finishing them was "why didn't you get me to read these sooner".

Usually, even if they didn't know anything about it or this type of movie isn't usually their thing, they get sucked into the magical feeling of it all. The reason Harry has to stay with the Dursleys is because the magical protection spell from Lily is only in effect when Harry is living with people he is related to, usually parents but with him it is his aunt, his mother’s sister. As much as Petunia hated her sister, she was not going put her sister’s son in danger after she died by sending him away. It was explained in the letter Dumbledore left with Harry on their doorstep. Hayride was also so upset that Petunia had told Harry they died in a car crash because they are basically considered war heroes who died in the line of duty and whose sacrifice had an impact on Voldemort’s original destruction.

    as a fan of the books and movies alike, they don't do any of the Dursleys well in the movies, there is some deleted scenes from the last movie that showed some growth to their characters, but Petunia tells him she hated her sister, but in reality she begged to also be a witch when her sister was found to be one, and she resented not being one, but the reason Harry was sent to their house was due to part of the magic that saved him from Voldemort the night his parents died, something to do with the magic staying around to protect him only so long as he could call a place where his mother's blood (Petunia) existed, and petunia knew about this too. also one of the deleted scenes from the final movie shows that Dudley doesn't hate Harry.

But they made him selfish and often cowardly and sometimes even like a bully.
      Of course he was a jerk sometimes but which teenager isn't? Harry and Hermione had a lot of those moments themselves. So many people say that Harry couldn't have survived without Hermione and that he couldn't have finished Voldemort without her and they are right.
