    Slytherin isn't necessarily evil by nature. Each house represents different traits. The Sorting Hat is placed atop of the student's head and the Hat reads the student's thoughts and emotions and determines their nature and selects them in the most appropriate house. On very rare occasions, there are individuals who are known as Hatstalls, which are students who possess traits of more than one house. For example, Professor McGonagall was a Hatstall when she was a student. She had the traits of both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, but the Hat ultimately placed her in Gryffindor. This are the traits of each house:
    Gryffindor - Courage, Bravery, Determination, Daring, Nerve, and Chivalry
    Hufflepuff - Hard work, Patience, Fairness, Just, Loyalty, and Modesty
    Ravenclaw - Wit, Learning, Wisdom, Acceptance, Intelligence, and Creativity
    Slytherin - Resourcefulness, Determination, Cunning, Ambition, Pride, and Self-preservation
    There have been many Slytherin students who were/are good people. Likewise, there have been a few Gryffindors who were bad people.

      My flatmate was sorted into Slytherin by Pottermore. She admits to having a violent dark side and won't necessarily be reassuring if you bring up flaws you really have, but she's actually really nice and easy to talk to.

    • @strawberrysoulforever8336
      @strawberrysoulforever8336 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @Umer Shaikh Not necessarily although this has been questioned in universe. The Hat considered putting Hermione in Ravenclaw, but she had stated before that she'd wanted to be in Gryffindor and she does have the right traits, so I guess that tipped the balance in Gryffindor's favour. Also, Ravenclaw has a reputation for having the weird kids who are original and creative, something that is not Hermione in the least. The most prominent Ravenclaw student is Luna, and that kind of Ravenclaw is nothing like Hermione.

      @hygor What would be the attributes of the six pairs of houses for wizard and witches in between? Are there two opposite houses or are all four equally distanced? The opposite pairs could be Slytherin vs. Hufflepuff: egoistic vs. loyal, cunning vs. hard work. Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw: Daring vs. wit, the popular ones vs. the odd ones

    You will fall in love with this series. It gets darker and more mature as they go along. Basically, the movies grew up with the fan base. It sounds almost cliche when Dumbledore says Harry was saved by his mother's love. But it goes deeper than that. His mother's love was the catalyst for the protective magic that saved Harry.

  • @STGAoe

    Its unfortunate that the script writer for the films liked Hermione a little too much since in the films she’s portrayed a little too “perfect” and we never really get to see her flaws which make her more relatable
    It also doesn’t help that also the script writer decided to take alot of moments and lines that were from Ron and gave them to Hermione to make her seem more perfect.
    An example for this movie would be how when they were trapped in the Devils Snare. In the books its Hermione who is freaking out about how to stop it and asking how to start a fire which Ron has to yell at her “ARE YOU A WITCH OR NOT?” basically telling her “just CREATE the fire to stop it”
    This really highlighted the fact that Hermione is just BOOK smart and she has a habit of cracking under pressure which was something she eventually learns to get past. Its Ron who usually provides the information about the magic world which makes sense as both Harry and Hermione aren’t FROM there and only lived in the normal world. Hermione is the most intelligent thats for sure but when it came to knowledge that only born and raised wizards would have known, Ron was the one to inform them.
    The first two movies is where you don’t really notice how prominent they make Hermione but by the third film, its starts to get pretty obvious Ron is being pushed more and more to the side
    Its so weird considering he loved the character of Hermione BECAUSE she wasn’t perfect and had her flaws but yet in the films he would remove these flaws and steal other characters moments to give to her making her seem perfect…..which was the exact opposite reason he liked her lmaoo

    You know, the reason why McGonagall eagerly recruited Harry to be a seeker for Gryffindor's Quidditch team is because she herself used to play for her house when she was a student. However, she had a nasty fall caused by a fool during a game against Slytherin to determine the winner of the Quidditch cup, at her last year at Hogwarts. This caused her to develop a desire to see Slythering being crushed by Gryffindor on Quidditch. When she saw Harry's skills at the broom, she saw in him the chance to beat Slytherin, that has been the Quidditch champion for six years (at that year).

    Not sure if it was the script writer or someone else but someone with the movies was a big Hermione fan so they took some of Ron's natural knowledge of magic being raised in the magical world and gave it to Hermione. The result of this in the movies made Hermione the one that knows it all about magic when much of it at least in the early movies should be Ron. It also then made Ron mostly comedy relief.

      It was 100% the screenwriter. In an interview with JK Rowling, he said (almost exactly), "Hermione is my favorite character. She's great for explaining exposition, because the audience will just assume she read it in a book somewhere."
      I still fume about this. The reason Harry/Hermione/Ron are the "Golden Trio" is because they are so well-balanced. Harry represents the audience's introduction to the Wizarding World, so we can discover everything through his experience. Ron is Harry's cultural guide. He knows all about the prejudices, politics, etc. Things you can't learn from books, not in a real sense. Hermione is Harry's educational guide. She reads ahead in spell books, learns techniques and things like that well in advance because she's ambitious. She is constantly trying to learn about this new world they're in, but she has several moments in the books where she simply cannot understand the circumstances because she wasn't raised in this world like Ron was.

In my experience, being allowed to engage with more difficult reading material at my own pace always felt so rewarding... Like being finally set free of an invisible limiter that I didn't even know that was inside my head. I can't phantom why anyone would want to take that sensation, the wonder of discovery and understanding, away from their children. Edit: He didn't read the books before filming,and so didn't know his character before he shot it. Lucius Malfoy's actor read his part and saw that his outfit in the script was a pinstriped suit (lol, can you imagine Malfoy wearing that?) and told the director that his character wouldn't ever wear muggle clothes, and got a change of outfit. I cant even imagine this experience. I was 11 years old when this movie came out, and had already read the first 4 books, so I had imagined what all these characters and locations looked like in my head. They did an amazing job with the casting for the movies. Richard Harris was the exact Dumbledore I had imagined while reading the books. Shame we never got to see his performance for the other 6 movies, he was perfect imo. RIP.
    If you haven't already, and if you have time, I would highly recommend reading the books. They did a good job with the movies, but they left out a LOT of cool and important stuff from the books.

    In America it's called The Sorcerer's Stone.
    But originally called the Philosopher's Stone in UK (& apparently elsewhere) for the books.
    I wasn't aware they did it with the movie too.
    Did they call it the Philosopher's Stone in the film as well?
    If so it must mean they purposely did multiple takes to get the different lines to accommodate Philosopher's Stone vs Sorcerer's Stone

    One thing I really love about the book is its introduction.
    We are introduced to the world through an unfortunately not-so-average day in the life of Vernon Dursley. We follow him from dawn to dusk on the day that Baby Harry defeated Voldemort. You see strange happenings, like owls all over the place, people running around wearing strange robes, news reports of spontaneous shooting stars.
    All from the perspective of a muggle. You receive no context for what all that is about until later.
    The owls are obviously spreading the news of Voldemorts disappearance among the magical community, and celebrations are breaking out everywhere. Witches and wizards are forgetting to dress like muggles and even joyously shooting off magic.
    It's after this, that Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Hagrid retrieve Harry and escort him to the Dursleys in the night.
    Edit: also, ill have to double check to be more precise, but about the first 4th or 3rd of the book is set-up before you even reach the school.
    It takes its time exploring the muggle world (specifically life with the Dursleys), Diagon Alley, and the Hogwarts Express. All from the perspective of a child being told he gets to transfer from mundane hell to magic heaven. It's very wholesome.

    More great reactions. Thanks for sharing. In return can I give you a gift. J.K. put a sweet easter egg into the script that was missed by so many and when you know it is heartwarming to think about. The first thing Snape asks Harry is “Potter! What would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?” According to Victorian Flower Language, asphodel is a type of lily meaning ‘My regrets follow you to the grave’ and wormwood means ‘absence’ and also typically symbolized bitter sorrow. If you combined that, it meant ‘I bitterly regret Lily’s death’.

    While we know little about other magic schools around the world, we do know that one other has four houses too. Ilvermorny, located in North America. But that’s because it’s founder was obsessed with Hogwarts because she never got to attend, so she based her own school on an idealized image of it. Instead of a sorting hat, Ilvermorny has each new student step onto the school’s large crest at the entrance. The magical creature that corresponds to each house will react to the students they want.
    There are also schools in France, Northern Europe, Russia, Japan, Uganda, and Brazil

    Most people interpret Hermione lying about the troll is just due to being too embarrassed to tell the teachers that she didn't hear the announcement to go back to the dorm because she was in the bathroom crying. She's getting excellent grades but it's the end of October already & she's still having trouble making friends, partly because some have prejudice against muggle-borns but also because her intense desire to learn it all is making her kind of a goody-two-shoes in the eyes of many of the kids. They think she's trying to be a teacher's pet, not just genuinely excited to challenge herself & learn. But taking into account of what you put together about her personality & her family when you read the books, I think it is equally that she doesn't want the teachers to know about her struggle with fitting in socially because they might write to her parents about it. It is mentioned in the books that the parents have final say if their child attends a magic school instead of learning at home. Even muggle parents can say no if they feel it's not good for their kid. I'm sure Hermione fears her parents would make her go home & not return to Hogwarts because they love her & put her emotional wellbeing over her book learning, despite knowing how eager she is to learn.

    • @Bonnesig
      @Bonnesig 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      That was never how I interpreted it. As in ever :) I always just saw it as in Hermione knew that the boys would get into trouble because they went looking for the troll instead of calling for a teacher and since they had just saved her life, she took the rap for them :) It was her first authority-defying act and she did it to protect someone who had just become her friends. It was character growth in my oppinion :)

    • @timimaksai8081
      @timimaksai8081 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I dont necessarily agree with this interpretation - I also think that this moment was a repayment for the boys and also to make friends. As the comment mentioned before me: we see her first rebellious moment for the sake of others - which shows a complexity of her character (that is not only "being a good and book-smart student" /a rawenclaw trait/ but being brave and loyal /placing her into griffyndor/).
      And please be careful with these kind of comments. The muggle-born aspect only comes up in the next movie so you have just spoiled it a little - fortunately not a huge detail but if us the viewers don't pay attention we could spoil so much more info accidently...

    • @tamarasmith9060
      @tamarasmith9060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Bonnesig But they didn't go looking for the troll, they went looking for her because she wasn't where she should be. She admits they saved her because she was in the wrong place. It's why she was in the wrong place that she won't admit to the teachers. Either way she still gets Harry & Ron out of trouble as repayment for saving her. She didn't have to lie to do that. But she doesn't want to admit why she was in the bathroom. Maybe it's because I was an adult when the 1st book came out so I don't view things as simply as kids do, but her not needing to lie to get them out of trouble jumped out at me right away & made me wonder why she felt an immediate need to cover up that she was crying. She's a very logical person & there's no logic to getting herself in trouble on purpose when it wasn't necessary in order to get the boys out of trouble. If she just told the teachers she didn't know about the troll because she was in the bathroom & that's why the boys went to get her then none of them would be blamed.

    • @tamarasmith9060
      @tamarasmith9060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@timimaksai8081 OK I forgot they didn't say directly that she's muggleborn in the 1st movie, I must be merging the book & movie in my head. But she is obviously shocked that wizard's chess has moving pieces & such, so that's a clue that 1 or both of her parents are muggles. It's definitely in the book though, & the 1st movie definitely covers how Harry's mom was muggleborn since they have to explain why he lived with muggles after being orphaned. And Hermione being muggleborn isn't supposed to be a surprise when it's discussed in movie 2, just that Draco had the nerve to call her a bad name to insult her.

    Actually morphing was first done in the movie "Willow" from 1987 or 88. The problem was it got overused in the 90s in so many tv shows, commercials, music videos and movies. So then it was used far more sparingly, it was mostly abandoned for a few years. I saw Willow when it came out and noticed the morphing scene right away. Quite impressive at the time.

    As someone who was 11 when Harry Potter in the books/movies was 11 and got every book when it came out, I actually felt the same way about not wanting to watch the movies until I saw the first movie. That first movie was pure magic compared to the rest of the sequels despite not being very action packed toward the climax. It was the mystery and wonders that made the first book/movie so good.
    13:38 its not been explained very well but basically there are 'warding' and stealth charms that helps people or objects from being detected by other wizards or muggles, which means blocking muggles from seeing you.

    I really liked your reaction it was really chill and laid back. You are right, there are more great details in the book that are filling the gap of the movie. However I still think this movie is setting the world well and has enough information to go on with the next ones.
    About the fact that Harry defeated Quirell/Voldemort with "love" is a bit simplistic in the movie. In fact Harry's mother's sacrifice for him unlocked a really ancient magic that would provide him with protection. So in a way yes that's her love that protected him but ultimately her sacrifice.
    He has to come back to the dursleys also because being with them offers him protection from voldemort (because Petunia is family, once again it's magic), it's something they don't say in the movies. He has to stay there until he is of age (17) and then the protection will lift. That's why Dumbledore sends him back even if they are horrible to him.
    I think you will enjoy the next ones and I'm happy to start this journey with you, you have a very nice personality 😊 happy new year and stay blessed

      personally its a bit of a bad mechanic and logic because it just means magic can be extended through muggles who are 'non-magic' folk, which potentially suggests a muggle 'can' achieve magic even if indirectly or unwillingly. The fact that Hermione can do magic from a line of muggles is proof of this. Magic just 'happens'.

    My daughter is 6 now. Last year I started her on the Harry Potter movies. She was a little scared at first, but Chamber of Secrets became her favorite. I did it because we were going to Universal and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter either last year or this. We finished all the movies in a few months, and this past June.... after many rewatches and me revealing that my wife, her mother, bought the first run of the books (she passed away in 2020 from cancer when our daughter was 3) just made her whole face light up! I took her to Universal as a Kindergarten graduation present. She waited over 2 hours on Hagrid's Motorcycle ride like a champ, and from then on if a ride had a 45-60 minute wait.... she'd say that was nothing. It was exhausting and expensive.... but the smile on that face is worth it tenfold. And, @HoldDownA, you have to watch the Making Of The Sorcerer's Stone here: th-cam.com/video/cD5S1ZvBd-0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=uOf1t9S9IFvaUXVM.

Sadly, the first movie is by far the most accurate to the books (it is also the longest film while being based on the shortest book, which I find WILD), so the movies are kinda all downhill from here by comparison. Movies #3 & #7 are my favorites, some of the best book-to-film adaptations out there. Harry is actually my favorite character in the books, he isn't such a clean-cut, "innocent" do-good'er as he is in the movies. He's a sassy little punk, and a very flawed person. They probably toned it down for the movies so that Harry would be more respected as a sort of role model for kids. Like yeah he breaks the rules in the movies, he lies, etc, but at the end of the day he's generally respectful to everyone who deserves it. But in the books he has a sassy attitude and loves to talk back and it makes for some really amusing inner- and outer-dialogue. Occasionally it leaks through in a line or two, but so much of his personality is lost otherwise.

The Potions Master, Snape, is over Slytherin, and the Gryffindors answer to Mcgonagall

    So excited another reactor is watching the Harry Potter series!
    The first couple of movies are very much kid’s movies since the main characters are 11-13 yrs old. The books were designed to grow with the characters so as Harry, Ron & Hermione grow up the story becomes more mature & darker.
    One piece of advice. Watch with the subtitles turned on. Harry Potter is very dialogue driven & it’s easy to miss what’s being said as you are speaking for your reactions. Plus something that’s said in passing in one movie becomes very important in a later movie. It’s easier to keep up & follow the story if the subtitles are on. Also there are lots of Latin phrases, new & unusual names & creatures & it’s easier to understand what the characters are saying if you see the words.
    Looking forward to watching!

      Thanks Lea! I totally forgot to put them on! And regretted it as soon as I started editing! Will do next time! I heard they get darker and I am excited to watch them grow! I was kinda cheekily saying “childrens movie” I’m so hooked!

    Welcome to the magical journey. I look forward to taking it with you.... For starters...... Hermione Lied because she didn't want them to get in trouble because the rules are somewhat strict and she knew that even if she lost points; Professor McDonald would give back the point and extra because she is very fair. She's also a die hard quiditch fan.

    These reactions are actual gems! I'm having so much fun with you (that sounds weird 🤣)
    Seeing your intro, one fun fact comes to mind...
    Fun fact: When it comes to the movies, J.K. Rowling set 1 unbreakable rule! If you want to be a part of the movies (the main ones, not talking about spin offs like The Fantastic Beasts) you MUST be British! No exceptions! One person, who was DESPERATE to be a part of the movies, was the wonderful and great Robin Williams! He wanted to play Hagrid! He even said that he will play the part pro bono, but unfortunately he wasn't British!
    Ok, I'm gonna start watching now! 😁

      WOW! Thanks for taking the time and watching my video! Thanks for this awesome comment! I loved robin williams first celebrity I cried over when he died! Cool she kept it British for the movies LOL

    Your foresight into what was about to happen was wonderful and much more keen then I was and was very impressive. I will let you know something you missed which I had missed till someone told me. The Mirror of Erised, is "desire" spelled backwards.

    You are correct; the books add much more detail. As has been said, the books get longer as the series progresses. This means more needed to be cut out from the screenplay to keep the size manageable.
    They did a good job; the movies are quite enjoyable without reading any of the books, but sometimes the audience is left wondering what they missed.
    Each of the four houses have signal virtues they're known for. Hufflepuff is reliable and steady. Ravenclaw features very smart wizards and witches. Slytherin has the reputation of having all the bad wizards, but that's not quite the case. They're more "look out for number one" than anything else. Gryffindor is known for bravery.

    So fun fact now that you’re watching Band of Brothers, the kid saying “You’re doing it, you’re doing it Peter!” in that little clip from Hook that you put in is James Madio, the actor who plays Frank Perconte in Band of Brothers.

    Petunia envied & resented her sister, she didn’t hate Lily. She loved her deep down. Their relationship was just complicated. They were very close as children and throughout her years at hogwarts. Sending letters to Hogwarts often but she was declined to come every single time. She badly wanted to be with her sister and she also loves Harry too but it doesn’t show right now for many reasons you’ll find out in the final movies. Something effects her that forced her to relive so many things. Please watch the extended editions of these films from now on. You’ll love how much they add to the world

    Fun, not so fun, fact. The forget-me-not turned red, because Neville was the only one in the scene who had forgotten to put on his robes. Had he not remembered to put them on afterwards, his fall during the broom riding lesson would most likely have gone much worse. Assuming its the same day of course.

      @holddowna aww bless you, anything you react too , I'll watch, you have a really warm and inviting ,friendly aurora. It's also how sincere and connected you become with the characters, and your very quick to pick up on things. Also the rare thing I've seen, only by you, is you can see the positive in people even though the film tries to persuade different. The hunch with Snape from the very get go was spot on. I'll watch the prequels next.

    Part 1-2 two set so to speak the info for the next films. One is first easily introduced to the world a little more for children and the 3-7 are then also a little darker but also more exciting.
