8:55 "Someone explain what that was." It's a tiny compass. If you look close you can see the needle spinning in there. A lot of their gear was as small as possible to cut down on the weight they had on them when they hit the ground.

12:20. Yes, Speirs shot the prisoners. There was no other choice. American forces had not yet secured their position in Normandy with both the airborne and seaborne landings meeting heavy resistance. They had not had any base camps set up, they had not secured a town to work out of, so there was nowhere to put them. So in order to ensure that the invasion was a success, American troops were ordered NOT to take prisoners on D-Day. That was definitely one time where German forces did not want to cross paths with an American. Once the invasion was a success, and Allied forces had established their position and began to gain ground in Europe, they did take prisoners.

From what the other comments have said, yours is that best reaction to this series ever. After only two episodes, I can't help but agree fully. You don't just react; you engage and discuss in a way few other reaction channels do. In the words of a different channel who did a reaction of this show. Episode two is nonstop stress, Episode three is just stress... depression... stress... depression... As for little tidbits throughout the show... The bit with Spiers shooting the prisoners did happen pretty much as shown. Interviews with other D Company men, confirm that he gave orders to take no prisoners on the night of or throughout the day of June 6th. He and 3 or 4 others killed a different dozen prisoners in a story not shown in the episode. Volksdeutsche recruits were a thing, however most of them were ethnic Germans from other countries in Europe. A good portion of the ones who came from the USA and Canada, were recruited as spies. Hall was killed by a tripwire grenade set up by the Germans to protect their intel after they began to fear the position would be completely overrun. The food Malarkey was cooking in the ammo box was likely horse meat. Not quite cat food... but not much better... Looking forward to the rest of the series... :)

I wholeheartedly believe if sobel had made it, one of the NCOs would have zapped his ass and gave control to Winters or Compton. Nobody would have said a damn thing. Remember, the only person Sobel had on his side was 1sg Evans and he was on the same plane as Meehan.

Your theories & claims are spot on! Worth mentioning, it’s so critical to create a healthy bond within your squad bc no matter who’s wrong-if you’re a leader, you really have to bite your lip & sometimes let your ego sit one out as it can really inspire a young joe to be a mature leader in the future. I’ve had to bite my lip so many times in my 13 yr career in the Army, but I always embraced the outcome bc it made me a more confident NCO, especially in real combat situations, the bond with my peers & subordinates are priceless to me. Ty for your beautiful opinions & respect for this masterpiece show!

Malarkey and the German. I've voiced my opinion before, an it will not change. "All true Aryan's." I have a serious problem with that. The newspapers were filled with reports of what the Nazis were doing to the Jewish people. I'm not talking about the Holocaust. That came later. The Nazis took everything from these people. There homes, businesses, food, medical etc. And put them all in slums. So an American born returns to the fatherland to fight for Hitler's Germany? He's a traitor, an it's act of treason. Good reaction. Keep up the good work.

There was one person with Spiers from F Company who was KIA, and another from D Company I could not find information on. You asked "did that really happen" There's a lot of things about his service that were withheld actually. In real life, Doss had another wounded man take his place on the stretcher. After treating the soldier, a sniper shot fractured Doss's arm, and he crawled 300 yards to safety after being left alone for five hours. Gibson omitted that from the film because he felt that the audience would not find the scene believable. The film omits his prior combat service in the Battle of Guam and Battle of Leyte. Doss was awarded the Bronze star for extraordinary bravery in both battles and of course Medal of Honor for all else.

I have watched a lot of reaction to BOB and yours is the best. What I mean is that you are giving it the respect it is due, paying attention and thinking. For example you spoke about Popi Win apologizing for getting shot, you understood he was disappointed, you immediately recognized when Winters said follow me, and you recognized the importance of him discovering the map. Also you saw that Hall volunteered on the assault, and laughed when he said to Guarnere "shut your Guinea trap" because you knew that it was just the way men bond and diffuse tension. All very impressive. Finally, the long discussion following your viewing is again respectful, insightful and appreciated. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Thank you.

From a Vietnam Vet, thank you for a wonderful reaction. FYI on the awards. The Bronze Star is awarded for unrequited bravery in combat; the Silver Star is awarded for bravery in combat as well but conduct above and beyond what is expected; the Distinguished Service Cross (along with the Navy and Air Force Cross) is the second highest honor awarded for conduct above and beyond what duty requires the Highest is of course the Medal of Honor). Winters is a Bonafide hero but not to his own eyes. Hopefully, no more blocks, as your reactions are priceless. TC.

the compass was a "secret" thing officers were given so they had a backup compass in case they lost their real ones or got captured. thats also why the men look a bit baffled because they didnt know about it probably.

As to the American returning with family to Germany, realize that WW2 began for the Germans in Sept 1939. War was not declared by Germany against the USA until late Dec 1941 - over 2 years later. So for him, it might not have been too difficult a decision when his family initially made it.
